A COLLECTION OF NINE DESIGNER BOOKBINDINGS BY THIS GERMAN BINDER]

n.p., N.P. 1982 - A unique collection of nine designer bindings, many of which were part of a 1982 exhibit at the Salzburg Werkstatte für Buchkunst. The display of these works was documented in an exhibition catalogue, printed in an edition of 500 numbered and signed copies, a copy of which is also included with the collection. The catalogue has two photographs of the binder, eleven black-and-white and twelve color illustrations of his work. The bindings in the collection demonstrate a wide range of technical prowess and decorative ingenuity. Three of the bindings are traditional contemporary designer bindings composed of full leather with colored leather inlays, which take the form of Miro like abstractions in two examples. Two other bindings demonstrate Stock's ability to create painted leather and parchment bindings. One binding demonstrates his use of contemporary marbled paper and vellum covered boards. Three other bindings demonstrate his ability to provide books with less traditional but more elemental book coverings. One has a simple loose leather covering with a simple gold rule bound by simple leather ties. Another covering loosely gathered in suede is fixed with a tie and a metal dagger. The other, a bit more artistic, is a similar loose vellum covering with ties, but is painted with an original abstract design. Two of the bindings are for blank books. A third covering is a prayer book, in a suitably ecclesiastical-looking binding with flaps and ties. One full leather binding with inlays is a German translation of a work by Walter Crane. The painted leather is the autobiography of Albert Schweitzer. The rest are works having something to do with binding or other aspects of book making. Unlike some art-bindings, Stock's are clearly meant as functional books, with texts intended to be used as texts. The collection of nine bindings together with the exhibition catalogue describing his work gives a remarkable sense of this man's range of binding ability and personal sense of style.         New York (Includes Signed Silver Gelatin Print of the Cover Photo)

Tokyo: Biyakuya-shobo, 1982. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Fine. This is a first edition, first printing of the award winning photobook \"New York\" published by Biyakuya-shobo, Tokyo, in 1982. Although many Japanese photographers came to New York to take photograph in the seventies, Kitajima produced the best book to come out of the period. He totally captured gritty images of New York streets and nightclubs and presented a vision of the city that overshadows the individual. He was awarded the prestigious Kimura Ihei Award in 1982 for his efforts. Photoeye summed it up best, \"Equally fascinated with the Manhattan\'s prosaic street life as well as its seamier underbelly, Keizo Kitajima\'s landmark 1982 book harkens back to both Weegee and Klein. His images highlight the stark juxtapositions and quiet desperation of city life and, in the tradition of the flaneur, his eye zooms in on the passing celebrity, occasional decadence, and random displays of outrageous behavior.\" Containing 140 full page black and white photographs, the book measures approximately 12\" x 8.5\" and is cloth bound in a photographically illustrated dust jacket. The rare post card issued with book is laid-in. The book is in FINE condition with a FINE- dust jacket that has a very small corner crease in the front upper right. The book is accompanied by a silver gelatin print of the Mick Jagger cover image entitled, \"Mick Jagger, East Village, 1981\". The print was done in 2007 with a limitation of 7 this being number 2. The print measures 12 x 8.5 inches and is signed and numbered by Keizo Kitajima on the verso. The print is in FINE condition and is professionally matted with corner mounts and foam back using museum quality materials.

Human Body (First Edition with Original Shipping Case)

Tokyo: Nippon Geijutsu Shuppansha, 1982. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. This is a first edition, first printing of Human Body published by Nippon Geijutsu Shuppansha, Tokyo in 1982. Featuring 94 full page duotone photogravures, Human Body is a gorgeously designed retrospective of Hosoes inimitable nudes and includes work from his critically acclaimed Man & Woman and Embrace series as well as many previously unpublished images. Commenting on the images, Galleria Carla Sozzani wrote, this is a continuation of Hosoe\'s ongoing explorations of the male and female bodies. It focuses on the dialogue between men and women and extracts the essence of life by cleverly abstracting the flesh. The images are erotic, but not affectionate and show physical angst, the struggle of the genders. Hosoe\'s camera never captures the bodies from a dominant angle, therefore, the series of works in this exhibition are not merely expressing the bodies of the opposite sex, but are depicting the discovery of the equal and diverse relationships, such as the dialogue. Measuring approximately 12 x 12 inches, the book is bound in black cloth-covered boards with a white dust jacket that is housed in a black printed slipcase and comes with the original shipping carton. The book and dust jacket are in FINE condition. The original shipping carton is in Near Fine condition and has minor wear. Overall, this is an exceptional copy of one of the scarcer titles by Eikoh Hosoe.

An Odd Bestiary. Text compiled and annotated by Laurie Block

[Easthampton, MA]: Cheloniidae Press. 1982. First Edition, one of 200 copies all on Rives lightweight paper, from a total issue of 300 copies, signed by the artist, Alan James Robinson, and hand-numbered by him on the colophon page. Page size: 13-1/2 inches x 9- 3/4 inches; 158pp including 6pp. Introduction by Laurie Block and 13pp. bibliography by Ms. Block. Bound by Grey Parrot: red quarter leather and light tan cloth over boards, tan cloth over boards folder for extra suite of engravings, clamshell box of tan linen over boards with red morocco spine stamped in gold gilt with title, fine. Each letter of the alphabet is exemplified by an animal whose name represents that letter. Each letter has its own page with a small woodengraving of the animal above printed text describing the animal. This is followed by an original full-page woodengraving of the animal with a caption and source printed in red by a page of text. The first letter of each of the 26 text sections is in red, original calligraphy by Betse Curtis in the style of Old English Gothic letters. The colophon features a red alphabet in Old English Gothic letters surrounding the debossed turtle (cheloniidae) with the colophon text printed in Arrighi. The text of the book is in Centaur as well as Arrighi, set in monotype by Mackenzie-Harris, with some hand-setting by Arthur Larson. The text, compiled by Laurie Block from five centuries of travelers' accounts, is "the story of how men came to view the animate world as a reality with its own unique history, integrity, and order." The earliest bestiaries - full of fantasy and little fact - from the medieval period seem elementary in comparison to those produced by the scholarship of the Renaissance. Humans had renewed their efforts to portray and accurately describe those other living creatures that share their planet. And, their ever-expanding audience was delighted. This desire to see and know the living world continues unabated. Here is a textual survey from publications as early as the 1577 THE HISTORY OF TRAVAILE IN THE WEST AND EAST INDIES... by Richard Eden (for the Elephant's entry) to the 1839 NARRATIVE OF THE SURVEYING VOYAGES OF HIS MAJESTY'S SHIPS ADVENTURE AND BEAGLE... by Charles Darwin (for the Tortoise's entry). There are 26 wood engravings by Alan James Robinson for each animal / letter of the alphabet. There are also 26 smaller linecuts which appear above the page of text with the first letter of the animal's name printed over / with the image. The woodengraving is a full-page image with a sentence, printed in red, below the engraving referring to the animal. This is an altogether welcome addition to the much sought after bestiary. Elegantly and beautifully executed, it is one of Mr. Robinson's most charming endeavors. See an Image.

        Zonen

Stockholm: Bokomotiv, 1982. Stockholm: Bokomotiv, 1982. First Edition. Hardcover.. VG+. Oblong 4to, 144pp. Printed boards as issued. First and only edition. Numerous Black & White plates. Introduction and afterword in Swedish. Boards a little rubbed to corners. A lovely copy. More images available on request. Scarce. From Bokomotiv: "In the nineteen seventies, photographer Esaias Baitel lived in France, in the Parisian suburb of Aubervilliers, for five years, which, among other things, resulted in a book and an exhibition that has toured the world... ...The Zone describes a neighborhood where motor bikes, rock and roll, and swastikas go hand in hand. In order to get close to these ÓRockersÓ, Esaias had to tell them that he was a Swede of Walloon origin. To introduce himself as a Jew in this environment would not have been cool. The photos do not show lost or mislead youths, but take us very close to a integrated subculture, with entire families and small children. / There are a lot of films and documentaries about the problems that immigrants encounter in France. Here we get to see the pictures of the other side. Confrontations are not hard to imagine. Esaias BaitelÕs photos pointed towards the future. In the nineteen seventies, he documented something that later was to erupt throughout Europe: the different forms and shapes of neo nazism. The photos are accompanied by Esaias BaitelÕs texts, describing his experiences living among the Rockers." An important and chilling work.
