The Whittington Press: a Bibliography 1971-1982

Whittington Press, Andoversford, Gloucestershire 1982 - 39x28cm, 83pp. With wood and Perspex engravings printed from the blocks, line-block reproductions, photographs and a tipped-in broadside type specimen, plus a set of forty-eight tipped-in specimen leaves and two posters bound in. Copy II of 20 (320) bound in full brown Nigerian goatskin, gold-blocked with a design by Richard Kennedy, gilt title to backstrip, t.e.g., Whittington marbled endpapers, with a further 45 original examples of Whittington printing contained loose in a brown cloth-covered drop-back box with printed label ¿Ephemera¿ to the front, all in a larger brown-cloth covered drop-back box with printed title-label to spine. Edition B of the first of David Butcher¿s Whittington Press bibliographies, which on initial impressions of its vast scale and opulence could easily be mistaken for a typical Whittington Edition A (Edition A does exist, but its limitation of just five copies makes it unobtainable for all practical purposes). The first bibliography is always in shorter supply than the second of 1996 (see items 14-16 below) and in Edition B as here, with a limitation of just 20 copies, is a very scarce book. In all editions, the paper format is larger than the subsequent 1996 bibliography, and in the luxury variants this adds even greater presence to the book. Only the special editions contain the bound-in mounted specimen leaves (and a list of subscribers, after the colophon), and of these only Editions A and B (as here) have another separate portfolio (Whittington¿s only instance of a box within a box?) of loose printing specimens. The selection of mounted leaves differs in each copy and there are some real rarities including a leaf from Whittington¿s legendary Harlequinade (although not one featuring a mezzotint). Butcher 63 notes that Edition A¿s portfolio contains 47 items (which are said to ¿vary slightly¿), but does not specify a number for Edition B ¿ we have counted 45 distinct pieces, including several posters, most bearing a pencilled date or bibliographic reference number. Together with the two volumes of collected posters published in 1996 and 2013 (the first of which we are also currently offering in Edition A), this is probably the most monumental of Whittington Press books, and of course an essential reference work (made even more valuable in this respect by the copious specimens) thanks to David Butcher¿s usual thoroughness and the accompanying comments by John Randle. Fine, with Fine portfolio in a Fine drop-back box. Butcher 63. Please note that this is an exceptionally large and heavy (6.5kg) book and additional shipping charges beyond our standard rate are likely to apply. Enquiries welcome, including the possibility of personal delivery within the UK. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

1982 Autograph Letter about Money, Touring, and Tom Baker

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. An interesting and rare autograph letter from the later years of the jazz legend's life to his friend Jim Butler. In the original envelope postmarked September 20, 1982, the letter details Baker's money woes while on tour in Canada and California, and apologizes for not being able to pay back Butler the money he had lent Baker. Baker mentions his girlfriend Ruth [Young], and an upcoming gig in Calgary organized by "some young guys who were very interested in my playing," and his upcoming tour in Germany, Austria, and Czechoslovakia. In a subtle mention of his ongoing drug problems, Baker writes, "I've been getting by since I last saw you on Tussion X cough syrup and feel as though I've made a lot of progress," and goes on to mention the death of actor Tom Baker from an overdose. (Complete text below.) A fascinating glimpse into Chet's later years, after his return to jazz, and his ongoing struggles with drugs and debt.<br style="">4 pp. in pencil, on two sheets of notepaper with a piano key design. With the original envelope. Envelope slightly ripped from opening; overall in fine condition. 5 x 7 inches (12.6 x 17.7 cm).<br style="">From the collection of Jim Butler, a long-time avid Chet Baker collector who became good friends with Baker and his family over the years.<br style="">Text, in full: "Dear Jim, I have not come by or called since my return to N. Y., because as you can probably guess, the money situation did not work out as I had hoped it would. Linda Goldstein is the only agent that I have ever been associated with who accepted work where I had to pay my own travel expenses, which on this trip came to just over $700. Her percentage came to $750, all this added to $750, I paid back to George Arakion[?] came to $2,200, which does not include a seven day stay at the 4 Seasons hotel in Edmonton which came to nearly $500 Canadian including room service. After Seattle I had 3 days off before doing a one nighter in San Jose and another one nighter in Frisco. This came to $250 at the Hotel Sutter, which is not exactly a luxurious place to stay. I sent Ruth $1,250 to cover rent and sent her to the Virgin Islands for a week with a girlfriend for her birthday which was Sept. 3rd. So, as you can figure, it didn't leave me with a whole hell of a lot. Fortunately while working in Edmonton, I met some young guys who were very interested in my playing in Calgary and have since arranged for me to do a week there beginning Oct 4th through the 10th. I have to fly up on the 2nd because I'll need to rehearse a day or two with the young guys I have to work with, then on the 13th Oct. I'll have to leave for 2 weeks work in Germany, Austria and Chekoslovakia. This work is much better paid and I also have another 2 weeks in Dec. in Europe; so you will get the money back that I borrowed from you. I hope that having lent me that money has not caused you problems; you were so kind to let me have it. I've been getting by since I last saw you on Tussion X cough syrup and feel as though I've made a lot of progress. Give me a call sometime soon; if your not too upset about the money. I guess you heard about Tom Baker. I just heard yesterday that he died during my absence from an overdose. I known many people found Tom a little obnoxious and hard to take but I always got along well with him and found him to be a very kind and generous person. Enough for now Jim; I hope you are well and happy, and that we have a chance to visit before I must leave again. Love, Chet."<br style="">''He was one of the first generation of masters who created the powerful American urban music that came to be called bebop. He was the last of them to remain faithful to heroin, long after the others had cleaned up or died young. It was a love affair more than a habit.'' (Chet Baker Obituary by Mike Zwerin, International Herald Tribune)<br style=""><br style="">A remarkable letter illustrating the hard life of the celebrated American jazz trumpeter, flugelhornist and vocalist. Baker was known for the clarity and ease of his tone as a trumpeter, and the preternatural calm, quiet, and reflectiveness of his singing, the way in which he could, "somehow," as the Italian pianist Enrico Pieranunzi puts it, "express the question mark of life in so few notes." Baker earned much attention and critical praise through the 1950s, particularly for albums featuring his vocals (Chet Baker Sings, It Could Happen to You) and Jazz historian David Gelly has described the promise of Baker's early career as "James Dean, Sinatra, and Bix, rolled into one." But Baker began using heroin in the 1950s, resulting in an addiction that lasted the remainder of his life, landing him in and out of jail and partly driving his notoriety and fame. His career enjoyed a resurgence in the late 1970s and '80s, during which time he lived in Europe, recording and touring, for most of the ten years prior to his death. On May 13, 1988 Baker was found dead on the street below his second-story room of Hotel Prins Hendrik in Amsterdam, in what was almost certainly a suicide, but ruled an accidental if drug-induced fall. <br style="">

[Photo Archive]: Asian/Pacific Lesbians and Gays

[Hollywood: , circa 1982]. [Hollywood. circa 1982]. Archive of snapshot photographs documenting social events and activities organized by the Asian/Pacific Lesbians and Gays organization in the Los Angeles area, circa 1982. 51 glossy color photographs (31/2" x 5?"). Some very slight fading on a few images, else fine. Most appear to have been shot at an amateur variety show that featured live music, risque skits, performances in drag, dancing, etc. Another sequence shows traditional family picnic games like tug-of-war, volleyball, and egg rolling in a park setting. Most bear the ink stamp of Baron Studio of Hollywood, California on the verso."Asian/Pacific Lesbians and Gays (A/PLG) was created in 1980 to meet the needs of gay men and women of Asian and Pacific heritage and to provide a support system in their relations with their families and communities so as to understand and accept each other with caring and pride. The idea of forming an organization for gay Asians had been discussed before 1980, but an important impetus came from gay liberation pioneer Morris Kight, who then had an Asian partner. A/PLG strives to enhance identity, pride, personal growth, competence, empowerment, and leadership skills as well as inform its members of political and social issues. Other goals include building solidarity between Asian gay men and lesbians and between native Asian-Americans and those who had emigrated from other countries. The organization provides support groups, seminars, and social events for its members. In 1997, the name changed to its current form, Asian/Pacific Gays and Friends." Presumably these were taken for the group but these seem to be relatively amateurish candid snapshot images, and as such are very uncommon, and perhaps unique images. .

Stephen King's Creepshow: A George A. Romero Film

New York: New American Library, 1982. First edition. Paperback. Very good. Berni Wrightson. Quarto [27.5 cm] in wraps. Crease to front wrap upper corner, small smear of glitter glue on rear wrap, else very light wear. Signed by both King and Romero on title page. Romero has written his trademark "Stay scared!" and King has gotten in on the fun by writing the same. Unusual to see this signed by both. Comic with art by Berni Wrightson and cover by Jack Kamen, released concurrently with the cult horror film of the same name. 'Creepshow' is King and Romero's rollicking tribute to 1950s horror comics like "Tales from the Crypt" and "The Haunt of Fear". All five stories from the movie are included in the comic, drawn in an expertly retro style with an 80s twist.

The Art of Edmund Caldwell II

Frank Read Press, Mazoe Rhodesia 1982 - 218 pp. Elephant folio. A completely handmade book. Copy #9 of only 250. All presubscribed prior to publication. Following the enthusiastic reception and mountains of compliments garnered by the first tribute to Caldwell, Frank Read Press did a second book, this on the artist's work in general. There are fabulous illustrations of African game (his watercolors are world renowned), references, notes, information on his studio, a bibliography of notes and references and a zoologist's appraisal of Caldwell's work. There are 44 full page colored plates of Caldwell's work each with a matching page of text. The quality of workmanship and materials has rarely been matched in bookmaking. Clearly this was a long labor of love for the Reeds and they made sure it would be a book that will long be remembered. Another fitting tribute to Caldwell's work. This copy has obviously neither been read nor changed hands often because it is in near fine condition in original red cloth over linin. Substantial additional postage.
