Critical Exponents in 3.99 Dimensions" in Physical Review Letters 28, No. 4, January 24, 1972, pp. 240-243 (Wilson and Fisher) AND "Feynman-Graph Expansion for Critical Exponents" in Physical Review Letters 28, No. 9, February 28, 1972, pp. 548-551 (Wilson) AND "Feynman-Graph Expansion for the Equation of State near the Critical Point (Ising-like Case)" in Physical Review Letters 29, No. 9, August 28, 1972, pp. 591-594 (Brézin, Wallace, Wilson)

FIRST EDITIONS IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS OF THE THREE IMPORTANT PAPERS which led to Kenneth G. Wilson's 1982 Nobel Prize "for his theory of critical phenomena in connection with phase transitions" (Nobel Prize Portal). Referring to Wilson's Nobel Prize winning work, the physicist Steven Weinberg wrote: "Ken Wilson was one of a very small number of physicists who changed the way we all think, not just about specific phenomena, but about a vast range of different phenomena" (New York Times Obituary). "A phase transition is the transformation of a thermodynamic system from one phase or state of matter (i.e., solid, liquid, gas, plasma) to another" (Wenner Collection). While there are also other phases (for example dealing with magnetism), an "accumulation of matter with uniform physical and chemical properties is said to be in a certain phase, such as solid, liquid or gas" (Nobel Prize Portal). A broad spectrum of scaling is required for a theoretical understanding of critical points for phase transitions. Specifically, all phase transitions necessitate that "their effects be measured on distance scales covering a range of a billion to one. "Analyzing critical phenomena across such multiple scales was an intractable problem until American physicist Leo P. Kadanoff demonstrated that they could be understood in terms of two factors: "scaling" and "universality" (key notions behind the renormalization group), and applied this technique to create the "block spin renormalization group" (Wenner). "Dr. Wilson realized that such "scaling" was intrinsic to the problems in phase transitions. In a series of papers in the early 1970s [these three papers], [Wilson built on Kadanoff's work and] he applied the renormalization idea to show how the critical phenomena could be solved by dividing the problem up into simpler pieces, so that what was happening at the melting point, for example, could be considered on one scale at a time. "[His] results showed that many seemingly unrelated systems - from magnets to liquids - could exhibit the same characteristic behavior as they approached the critical point" (NYT). The concept proved to be of wide relevance in physics and Wilson was awarded the 1982 Nobel Prize. CONDITION & DETAILS: Three complete issues in original wraps. New York: American Physical Society. Quarto (10.25 x 7.50 inches; 256 x 188mm). Barely visible library stamps on the front wrappers (see photos), address labels on the rear wrappers of two of the issues. Archivally rebacked at the spine and without any other library markings. All three and very clean. Very good + condition (all three).

        Fahrenheit 451

New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1982. Limited Numbered Edition. Aluminum. Near Fine+/No Jacket, As Issued. Mugnaini, Joseph. This Limited Numbered Edition of one of Bradbury's best-known works is one of the most spectacular of all editions of this important book, originally published in 1953. Signed by the author Ray Bradbury and the artist, Joseph Mugnaini, on the limitation page. Numbered 827 of 2000 Limited Edition copies. This Fahrenheit 451, the temperature at which book paper catches fire and burns, is bound in "fire-proof" aluminum. Each book had to be wrapped by hand in aluminum foil, and the covers and endleaves were affixed by hand. Then the cover design was silkscreened on the aluminum foil in red, white and black. These efforts produced a spectacular result and the scanned pictures do not do the book justice because of the shiny aluminum. The book is in near fine condition with a light scratch on the front cover but, overall, one of the nicest we have seen. An attractive silver gilt covers the page edges on all sides. The book also includes an original full-page lithograph and and three other brilliant illustrations, one of which is a 2-page foldout. The paper-covered board slipcase is also in silver with black velvet lining. It shows two very small rubs on the panels but is solid and complete, and protects the book well. Includes the Limited Editions Club Monthly Letter dated August, 1982 that discusses the book. A scarce and wonderful edition.

MYTHS OF THE NEAR FUTURE (Pristine Signed Copy)

Jonathan Cape, UK 1982 - Cape, UK. 1982. Collection of classy short stories including the title story and "News from the Sun" and "The dead time". Back when Ballard's EMPIRE OF THE SUN was nominated for the Booker Prize - was the favourite, in fact - most pundits saw the book's victory as a foregone conclusion. To this day people refer to "Empire" as the Booker winner. Sadly, it didn't win, though Stephen Spielberg made a memorable movie of the novel. This is a pristine, unread copy boasting immaculate blue boards, a spine as tight and perfect as as a lush during a glorious weekend of drunken stupor alone in a locked brewery, clean, crisp and untouched pages so white that village idiots around the world run shrieking from their celestial purity and a dustjacket whose perfection assaults those who view it boldy with taunts like "I'm fit, I'm fit, Josef Stalin was a git".
