        Les Cerfs-Volants [Inscribed & Signed]

Gallimard, Paris 1980 - Octavo (20cm); publisher's cream card wrappers printed in red and black; 369pp. Some minor foxing and tiny soil spot to rear cover, else Very Good to Near Fine. Inscribed with an autograph quote signed by Gary on half title addressed to Edmond and another (illegible)--does not appear to be in the author's mother tongue, Lithuanian but rather Polish. A novel of a love affair thwarted by the start of World War II, the last to be published during the author's lifetime--Gary would die in December that same year, of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Gary was awarded the Prix Goncourt twice, the first as Gary in 1956 for his novel Les Racines du Ciel, and again in 1975, as Emile Ajar, for La Vie Devant Soi, making him the only author to be awarded the prize under two different pseudonyms.         Slash [Complete]

Los Angeles: Slash, 1980. Tabloid format, offset printed on newsprint with color covers. Includes all consecutive numbered issues from Vol. 1, No. 1 - Vol. 3, No. 5, as well as the rare unnumbered first year anniversary issue, and the posthumous final issue included as an insert in the September 1981 issue of New York Rocker. A complete run of one of the longest running and most influential first wave punk fanzines. Over the course of thirty issues Slash distinguished itself for excellent coverage, not just of the nascent LA punk scene but also with plenty of news and interviews from elsewhere in the U. S. and abroad, beginning with the iconic Dave Vanian portrait on the debut issue from May 1977. The stark cover portrait, usually based on a photograph by Melanie Nissen, who did superb work as photo-editor, became a trademark look for the zine's covers. The zine also gave page space to early work by Gary Panter, including his infamous Jimbo comics. Slash maintained a rigorous and consistent ap- proach that remains a remarkable accomplishment in the turbulent age in which it was published, and the zine arguably had more of a visual impact on the look of US punk than any other zine. The longevity of the zine was likely helped by the vigor with which the magazine rejected the past and looked forward, exemplified by the manifesto editorial by Claude "Kickboy" Bessy, entitled "So This is War, Eh?", which launches the first issue. "This publication was born out of curiousity and out of hope. Curiosity regarding what looks like a possible rebirth of true rebel music, hope in its eventual victory over the bland products professional pop stars have been feeding us. May the punks set this rat-infested industry on fire. It sure could use a little brightness!" A clean, unusually well preserved near fine set, with a number of the issues having never been folded. There is light overall expected toning to the newsprint, some occasional faint, almost imper- ceptible tidemarking to a few issues and a 1 1/2" closed tear to several leaves of Vol. 2, No.2, but considering the fragile, uncoated newsprint which the zine was printed on, a remarkable set.

        John Hejduk: 7 Houses

Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies, 1980. In 9 (cm 21 x 25), pp. 122 con illustrazioni nel testo. Lievissimi danni riparati al dorso. Brossura editoriale. Newark, Vermont: The Janus Press. Near Fine with no dust jacket. 1980. First Edition. Hardcover. Color Illustrations; Title: The Dream of the Dirty Woman: A Play in One Act Based on a Dream of Elka Schumann with a Record of the PerformanceAuthor: Bread and Puppet Theater - "The Bread and Puppet Theater" (often known simply as "Bread & Puppet") is a politically radical puppet theater, active since the 1960s, currently based in Glover, Vermont. Its founder and director is Peter Schumann. The name "Bread & Puppet" is derived from the theater's practice of sharing its own fresh bread, served for free with aioli, with the audience of each performance as a means of creating community, and from its central principle that art should be as basic to life as bread. Some have heard echoes of the Roman phrase "bread and circuses" or the labor slogan "Bread and Roses" in the theater's name as well, though these are not often mentioned in Bread & Puppet's own explanations of its name. The Bread and Puppet Theater participates in parades including Fourth of July celebrations, notably in Cabot, Vermont, with many effigies including a satirical Uncle Sam on stilts. , Elka Schumann.         Figures, with three background figures. Original painting, acrylic on canvas, measuring 20 x 24 inches, signed lower right with the artist's initials, as was his custom, and on verso in full

, 1980 An exceptionally fine painting of a young man engulfed in light, another young man watching him from behind, while a man and a woman meet in the background. This evocative painting reflects the rather complicated personal relationships which seemed of great interest to Williams and the palette speaks to his nights and days in Key West, a place, like Provincetown and Venice, famed for its particular light.

        Music for Chameleons

Random House 1980 - The xerox sheets ( 8.5 by 11, printed to the front only ) of the pre-publication manuscript for this collection of stories, biographical essays and a ' non-fiction novel ' . This was a Random House in-house copy with a pencilled notation ( in an unknown hand ) to the envelope containing the pages, noting that there are fewer than ten copies of this version. A significant degree of editorial effort is reflected in the text of the book, primarily typographical in nature, although there are numerous additons and deletions. The published book reflects the incorporation of those changes made to this manuscript copy. The preface of the published version, however, is markedly different in the two versions - and suggests the exercise of significant editorial influence over Capote's ego. The published book strikes his claim that " I had to invent a new method of writing - and then learn how to use it. " Also gone is the statement that " Suddenly I was able to set fire in a few paragraphs material that heretofore would have taken endless pages to ignite. For instance, I did a portrait of Marilyn Monroe, it's only 12 pages long, but I couldn't have told more about Marilyn if I had written 1200. " Gone is a reference to ' finding a method ', and the conclusion to a sentence reading ' I eventually developed a style. ' omitted from the book; " .of reporting that I called Conversational Portraits. " A very scarce version of a book; an internal working draft that would have been read by a very small cohort of Random House personnel, as well as the author. This set additionally offers fascinating insights into a book as a work-in-progress; and begs questions about how the ensuing conversations about the suggested changes might have progressed.
