Starart Productions Limited, Canada, 1979. This edition of STAR ART (edited by Debby Chesher), an art coffee-table book that was published in 1979, is infamously hard to find. THERE WERE ONLY 300 OF THE LEATHER BOUND AND HAND-SIGNED AUTOGRAPHED EDITION PUBLISHED!! (This particular book is #227 of 300). If you do happen to see this book for sale, it is usually the black and white edition with the dust jacket. Even if it has the stock picture as the Burgundy leather bound edition, it is still the black and white one--(believe me, I have checked with every seller on Amazon and AbeBooks who are offering them for sale)! TO MY KNOWLEDGE AND AS OF TODAY, THIS IS CURRENTLY THE ONLY ONE ONLINE THAT IS HAND SIGNED BY JONI MITCHELL et. al.,THAT IS UP FOR SALE! If you are a Joni fan (whether of her amazing art or timeless music), this is an absolute must-have! This is undoubtedly a true collector's piece, and it is over 40 years old to boot! The book itself is in perfect/pristine condition (no bent/marked/highlighted pages--well taken care of throughout the years); and the bookcase has two slight scratches on the front. Joni is the first artist featured in the book, and 40 pages are devoted to her art--too many to feature here! Signatures include Ron Wood (of the Rolling Stones); John Mayall; Klaus Voormann; Commander Cody and Cat Stevens (who converted to the Muslim faith while the book was being published, and is the only one who did not sign--though there is an original card insert that states this) are also featured with their artwork. THIS BOOK (NOW SOLD OUT EVERYWHERE) HAS BEEN F … [Click Below for Full Description]

WILSON, Tony, Ian Curtis [SAVILLE, Peter]
Factory Records, Manchester, 1979. Original photocopied newsletter with promotional sheet. [2]pp + [2]pp. Two sets of loose sheets printed versos only attached with one staple. Near fine with some light wear at a staple and some corners, particularly the final sheet. A rare example of two seminal documents from Factory Records. The first, a "polemical newsletter written by Tony Wilson in September 1979, detailing Factory's activities to date, and future plans" (*Peter Saville Estate 1-127* #10), is in essence a press release/bibliography describing in an often-sarcastic tone everything Factory Records had released up until that point, including items of dubious legitimacy ("Factory egg timer; menstrual art."). Together with the newsletter is the first Joy Division promotional sheet, written by Ian Curtis, typed and signed Steve Morris which was sent out with the "Ideal For Living" EP in 1978. Rare.

Michael Ende
Michael Ende (1979) 'Die Unendlich Geschichte' or 'The Neverending Story', German first edition, first printing [erste Ausgabe, erste Auflage], published by Thienemann Verlag. True first edition, obviously preceding the English translation which came out in 1983. Condition: an unread and fine copy in like dust jacket. No previous owner's inscriptions, no bookplates, no stamps. The boards are not bumped, clean and not damaged. Light toning to paper commensurate with age. The dust jacket has no tears. A beautiful example. Michael Ende was already an established writer of children classics such as 'Momo' and the two 'Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver' books when the author embarked on this masterpiece. He worked for three years on the novel and the book was published in September 1979. The first print run consisted of 20,000 copies. Most of them have not survived the passage of time in decent condition. The book has been quickly accoladed with multiple awards for children and YA literature across Europe in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It has been adapted many times for the stage, radio and TV, but perhaps the most known adaptation is the 1984 Wolfgang Petersen film version which deals with the first part of the book. Ende himself was not happy with the cinematic adaptation and pursued all legal avenues to be not mentioned in the credits. Although certainly charming the film adaptation completely misses the essence of the book which is a love letter to books and the power of 'neverending' human creativity and imagination. In the film the fantasy creatures from Phantasia … [Click Below for Full Description]

Thompson, Ralph
Collins in Association with The Tryon Gallery, London, 1979. Small folio (11 x 7 11/16 inches; 279 x 195 mm.). Collating [160]. One of twenty copies signed in pencil on the title-page by Ralph Thompson and specially bound by Zaehnsdorf in quarter brown morocco, ruled in gilt, over tan cloth boards. Vellum tips. Spine ruled and lettered in gilt with two raised bands and with the Zaehnsdorf monogram in gilt at the foot of the spine. Top edge gilt. Profusely illustrated throughout, including eleven full-page color illustrations, some of which are double-page. Housed in the original tan cloth slipcase. A fine copy. "Of this edition 20 copies have been reserved by arrangement with the Publishers for fine binding by Zaehnsdorf. This is copy number 9 which has been specially bound for David Brass" (calligraphed on an inserted limitation leaf at front). "This book was first published in 1970. I was fortunate to make this safari in East Africa before the Federation broke up and the different countries went their separate ways. It is, of course, still possible to see the parks mentioned in the book. This new edition is published in a format which, it is hoped, will be much more convenient to handle. It should therefore be easier to examine the pen drawings, and it is these which I regard as the kernel of the book. Although some of the colour plates are now shown as single-page 'details' only, it is to be hoped that this more manageable format will make the new Artist's Safari a welcome successor to the first edition" (verso of half-title).
