         [Manuscript]: Selected Translations 1948-1968

New York: Atheneum, 1979. Fine. Typescript copy. Loose quarto sheets. 134pp. Near fine with a light wear and oxidation marks on the first sheet. Accompanied by a TNS from Atheneum poetry editor Harry Ford to Daniel Hoffman: "Here's the typescript copy of Bill Merwin's book of translations which we'll be publishing in September. I hope you will find it interesting and useful." Hoffman served as the Consultant in Poetry of the Library of Congress (the equivalent of the United States Poet Laureate) in 1973-1974 and published several additional books of poetry and literary scholarship. Hoffman appears to have typed a three-page table of contents on the rectos of Swarthmore College Library list from 1968. An interesting artifact connecting two noted American poets.

A TESTAMENT OF FAITH. A LEAF FROM A COPY OF THE FIRST AMERICAN BIBLE, TRANSLATED INTO THE LANGUAGE OF THE ALGONQUIN INDIANS BY JOHN ELIOT AND PRINTED AT CAMBRIDGE IN NEW ENGLAND IN THE YEAR 1663

Charles E. Goodspeed & Co, Boston 1979 - 210 x 180 mm. (8 1/8 x 6 1/4"). 2 p.l., 10 pp., [1] leaf. ONE OF 87 COPIES printed and bound by the Stinehour Press. Publisher's blue cloth, flat spine with silver lettering. In the original sheer blue dust jacket and blue cloth slipcase. WITH A LEAF FROM ELIOT'S INDIAN BIBLE mounted on a stub following the title page. The book in as-new condition, the leaf with a little smudging to margin on verso, otherwise clean and fresh. This very attractive little leaf book contains a desirable leaf from Eliot's Indian Bible, the first Bible printed in America, along with a brief essay on its significance. In the words of Darlow & Moule, the Eliot Indian Bible "constitutes the earliest example in history of the translation and printing of the entire Bible in a new language as a means of evangelization." Darlow & Moule adds that this Bible "was the first scripture printed in North America, and also the first version prepared for a pagan people in their own language. John Eliot performed the Herculean task of learning the difficult Algonquin tongue, of translating, unaided, the entire Bible in this unknown and unwritten language, of overcoming many technical difficulties, and of then teaching the Indians to read their own tongue. Samuel Green, the printer, was aided greatly by James Printer, an Indian compositor and corrector of the press. . . . The language is now extinct." Eliot (ca. 1604-90) was a Puritan minister in Roxbury, Massachusetts, who, beginning at age 42, studied for 15 years the Narragansett, or Massachusett, dialect of Algonquin used by the Indian tribes in his vicinity. He worked for an additional eight years on his translation. Printing was begun in 1660 with equipment and supplies shipped from England by the Corporation for the Promoting and Propagation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in New England. The New Testament appeared in 1661, and the entire Bible in 1663. A descendant of the Plymouth colonist for whom he was named, the author of the essay here, John Eliot Alden (1914-91) had a distinguished career as a librarian and bibliographer, culminating in the production of "European Americana: a chronological guide to works printed in Europe relating to the Americas, 1493-1776," designed to be the successor to Sabin.          Handwritten Manuscript Lyrics of Dreamin'

1979. Near fine. Debbie Harry's handwritten manuscript (fair copy), titled at the top, and signed twice, of Dreaming Is Free, her brawny and lusty, gold selling single. The complete lyrics, all in her own handwriting, 27 lines (169 words), in blue ink, all of them on the recto side of an 8 1/2" X 13" sheet of yellow paper. Celestial Debbie has sealed her signature at the end with a kiss in pink lipstick. Ably framed (UV) with a color photograph of D. H. (white skirt and top, hands in pockets, head tilted, big smile). Lightening of the ink in a few places, otherwise fine condition, and this MS is so fair to behold, that if I had a tail, I'd wag it. Dreamin' was the lead single from Blondie's 4th album, Eat to the Beat, a red hot, new wave, punk rock hit, a sorceress' mix of beauty and power, from the "Buddy Holly/Rave On" school of songwriting, released in the gentler days of punk, just before the '70s gave way to the body piercing generation of living wind chimes, whose only fear was a junkyard magnet. The manuscript was gifted to a poorly promoted and lightly attended charity auction in 1992 and she came away from the encounter soured by the experience. So if you plan to get your own Debbie Harry manuscript, you better start stalking her right now, and be sure to come equipped with a donut for bait, a 3 layer blindfold, a rag soaked in chloroform, and a trunk lid that won't open from the inside.

OP: Independent Music, Complete Run A-Z, 1979-1984

Olympia: Lost Music Network, 1979-1984. First Edition. Paperback. Very Good. Complete run in 26 issues covering the letters of the alphabet, with six issues of follow-up OPtion included. Stapled wraps, some in newspaper format. Very Good condition overall. Subscription card cut out of back cover of first issue. Toning, slight chipping, and brittleness to first 14 issues. A few small stains to covers. Stamps, postmarks and name/address on back covers. A few stray pen marks (very infrequent). Red Tone Poets 7" laid into issue V. Light wrinkling to T issue. OP created "indie" as a musical label. It spanned the entirety of music not on major labels during a time of mainstream conformity and a largely unsung proliferation of sub rosa styles and genres. People associated with the fanzine went on to found K Records, Sub Pop, and a bunch of other labels; create grunge; and generally redefine the idea of American youth culture. These issues are still a great resource for finding overlooked music from the early '80s.

         Historische Bilder-Bibel

Autograph Letter Signed, in English, 2 separate folio pp with a 3 separate page folio addendum, all on printed "Erte" stationery, Paris, France, May, 7 1979 with signed transmittal envelope

      - Erte discusses the illustrations to be included in "Erte's Theatrical Costumes in Full Color," published in 1979 by Dover (reprinted in 2016). He gives detailed notes on the costume selection and placement to Stanley Applebaum, Editor-in-Chief at Dover. "Erte's Theatrical Costumes in Full Color," is a collection of 49 of Erte's exotic and historical costume designs for theater productions (and for well-known theater personalities), ballets, Folies-Bergere, and the like from 1911-1975. Included in the book are designs for a fan bearing slave girl, worshipper of Horus, wife of Russian Boyar, Ceres, a mermaid, and a gypsy dancer. The published book includes changes Erte listed in our letter. For example, the cover shows a costume for Ganna Walska in "Manon," 1920. In the letter, Erte lists this work as being on p. 10, suggesting that after receiving this letter, Applebaum changed the placement of the costume design. The Gift-bearer for the show "Aladdin" at the Folies-Bergere, 1927 is in the book and in the letter is listed as being on p. 19. Erte mentions the design for the Monster from Scheherazade which is also in the book. Erte refers to Salome Estorick who wrote the book's preface. Erte writes, "I am sending you the information you asked for. To tell the truth I am not very happy about the selection of the illustrations - I think they could be much more typical of my work. First of all the design which I suppose is intended for p.1 is not a theatrical costume but an evening dress (so it has to be replaced). Then I think that there are too many costumes for Sheherazade [sic]; - I believe that four of them would be sufficient; the ones I like best are: "Monster" (p. 43), "Lady-in-waiting" (p. 44), "Shahriar" (p. 46) and "Jester (side 3). I should be very happy if you could replace the two costumes for a children ballet (p. 24 and p. 25) and the Chinese costume (p. 37) by something more effective. Would you kindly get in touch immediately with M. and Mr. Estorick at the Grovesnor Gallery in London (48 South Molton Street. Tel - 1-6290891) - they could supply you with some other designs. [Salome Estorick wrote the preface for Theatrical Costumes].I am terribly sorry to give you so much trouble - but I really should love the new book would be as beautiful as the preceding ones you did. With my kindest regards, Cordially yoursErte3 page addendum, separate folio Erte stationery sheets, Erte lists page numbers and titles of illustrations or comments on the illustration, starting with "Side 2? Front Cover?p. 46 Side 3.".

         Andy Warhol's Exposures

New York, NY: Andy Warhol Books / Grosset & Dunlap, 1979. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine. FIRST EDITION, VERY RARE SIGNED LIMITED DELUXE ISSUE, OF WARHOL'S FIRST BOOK OF PHOTOGRAPHS. Exposures, Warhol's first photography book, began quite simply with the purchase of a new camera. As Warhol began taking pictures, he remarked to the writer Bob Colacello: "We should do a photography book together, Bob. We've got to take photographs wherever we go from now on. It's work now, Bob." Warhol's collection of 360 images captures countless major celebrities in candid and revealing moments. With illuminating text by Warhol and Bob Colacello. Signed in pencil on the limitation page and numbered 64/1000. Note: Although Warhol indicated there are 1000 copies in this signed limited edition, this seems to have been fabricated by him. It is estimated that fewer than 200 were produced. This copy was signed and numbered in front of the original owner - it is possible Warhol randomly made up the limitation numbers as he signed them. New York: Andy Warhol Books / Grosset & Dunlap, 1979. Quarto, original full leather with gilt "Andy Warhol" on front cover, silk endpapers, all edges gilt. With attached silk bookmark. Without (as usual) publisher's box. A beautiful production. RARE.

[POSTER] Tiny Tim : World non-stop singing record, Luna Park. Jan. 12. $10 concert only ... Century of song in one smash hit! (Inscribed by Martin Sharp)

[Sydney, 1979]. Screenprint, from one stencil, 1015 x 750 mm; extensively annotated in black texta by the artist Martin Sharp, with comments such as 'He did, in c. 2hrs. 20 mins.', 'Goody, Goody', 'Hooray and alleluia', 'Rise and shine today', and 'Michael had to have this'; signed and dated by the artist '10.9.86'; small sections of 'white-out' (confined to the edges), creasing and general wear; unbacked. A unique example, inscribed by the artist, of this very rare original poster designed by the important Australian pop artist Martin Sharp. Sharp was a friend, champion and collaborator of the American musician, Tiny Tim (born Herbert Buckingham Khaury, 1932-1996), whom he had met in London in the late 60s. Martin Sharp's twin long-term obsessions were Tiny Tim and Sydney's Luna Park. At Luna Park on 12 January 1979, in a marathon performance organised by Sharp, Tiny Tim set a new world record for non-stop singing (two hours, 15 minutes and seven seconds). This event became the core material for Sharp's film about Tiny Tim, Street of Dreams, a labour of love which took him a decade to complete and nearly sent him broke in the process. We cannot locate another example of this poster in Australian collections.

The Bloody Chamber and other stories.

London Gollancz Fantasy 1979 - First edition, 8vo, original boards, dust-jacket with design by Malcolm Ashman to upper panel and portrait photograph by Fay Godwin to lower panel, a little minor toning to a jacket notorious for discolouring, with slight rubbing to top edge, but overall a very good example. Angela Carter's excellent collection of dark takes on fairy tales and gothic stories, most famous perhaps for the first book appearance of The Company of Wolves, memorably transferred to the silver screen by Neil Jordan in 1984.          White House Years --- Years of Upheaval

Boston: Little, Brown and Company 1979 - "White House Years": Thick 8vo., blue cloth lettered in gilt; dust jacket, slightly soiled. First edition of Kissinger's National Book Award winner. A presentation copy, inscribed: "To Phil Habib, invaluable colleague and trusted friend. With affection and admiration, Henry A. Kissinger," on the half-title page. [Along with] "Years of Upheaval" (1982): 8vo., red cloth lettered in gilt; dust jacket. First edition. A presentation copy, inscribed: "To Phil Habib, who made many Secretaries of State look good. with the admiration and affection of his friend Henry A. Kissinger," on the half-title page; laid-in are Kissinger's business card and 3 pages of notes, probably written by Margaret Adams, the senior editor of Wadsworth Publishing, detailing relations between Habib and Kissinger, probably for a future interview with the latter. ----- The "New York Times" once judged U. S. Ambassador Philip Habib, "the outstanding professional diplomat of his generation." Like Secretary of State Kissinger, Habib was heavily involved in Middle East diplomacy, and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1982. Upon his death, Kissinger said Habib was "every Secretary of State's idea of a great foreign service officer." Kissinger eulogized Habib with the statement, "He was one of my heroes. The great thing about him was that he was a terrific soldier." As evidenced by the numerous references to Habib in his memoirs, Kissinger relied a great deal on Habib's acumen and irreverence while serving as secretary of state. "I might not do what he said," asserted Kissinger, "But I wouldn't make a move without finding out what he thought." A handsome set with an exceptional provenance.
