Glubb, Sir John Bagot
Mayfield Sussex: 23rd Sept. 1979. Typescript published in: Into Battle. A Soldier's Diary of the Great War (Cassell, 1978). Ink on letterhead, 3 pp. Typescript carbon, 12 pp., with a small ink sketch map and occasional annotations. Photograph: copy of portrait, with studio stamp of Paul Laib. 1 vols. 4to. Nice late letter in a bold hand from Glubb Pasha, Sir John Bagot Glubb (1897-1986), who served with distinction in France in the first world war, and was thrice wounded. Glubb's long career in the Middle East began with a posting to Mesopotamia in 1920, and in 1930 he joined the Arab Legion in Transjordan (now Jordan), where he organized a remarkable fighting force from Bedouin tribesmen. Glubb was appointed commander of the Arab Legion in 1939. "His contribution to the capture of Baghdad in 1941 and the subsequent capture of the desert fortress of Palmyra in Syria was decisive, for it denied the eastern flank of the Middle East to Hitler" (ODNB). In 1948 Glubb led the troops of the Arab Legion across the Jordan to occupy the West Bank, under the terms of the United Nations resolution for the partition of Palestine and in the face of military resistance. Glubb was dismissed by King Hussein in 1956 and "was not awarded a general's pension by either Britain or Jordan. He was appointed KCB (1956) on his arrival and thereafter the British government washed its hands of him" In his retirment, he wrote and lectured, chiefly on Middle Eastern subjects. This letter conveys a portrait and typescript chapter from Into Battle (1978) to a Yugolsav correspondent; and writes (in part) " … [Click Below for Full Description]

Stephen King
New York: Viking Press, 1979. First Edition, First Printing. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine in archival protective cover. SIGNED and inscribed on the front free endpaper by Stephen King and dated 6/27/00. Also, loosely laid in is a letter from Stephen King's office laying out the rules for having his books signed through the mail (a practice that was discontinued several years ago). The Dead Zone is a tight, well-crafted book. When asked in 1983 which of his novels so far was "the best," Stephen King answered, "The one that I think works the best is Dead Zone. It's the one that [has] the most story." --Fiona Webster Stephen King "The Dead Zone" First Signet Printing, August, 1980. About The Dead Zone In the St. James Guide to Horror, Ghost & Gothic Writers, Gary Westfahl predicts that "King has already earned himself a place in the history of literature. At the very least, he will enjoy the status of a latter-day Anthony Trollope, an author respected for his popularity and social commentary. More likely, he will be enshrined as the Charles Dickens of the late 20th century, the writer who perfectly reflected, encapsulated, and expressed the characteristic concerns of his era." If any of King's novels exemplifies his skill at portraying the concerns of his generation, it's The Dead Zone (1979). Although it contains a horrific subplot about a serial killer, it isn't strictly a horror novel. It's the story of an unassuming high school teacher, an Everyman, who suffers a gap in time--like a Rip Van Winkle who blacks out during the years 1970-75--and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Wolfe, Tom. [John Glenn and Chuck Yeager]
Farrar, Straus, Giroux, New York, 1979. First edition of Wolfe's classic work. Octavo, original cloth with titles to the spine in silver. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page in the year of publication, "For George With thanks for a splendid lunch at Perino's where I could wear a suit without being asked if a table were available. Tom Wolfe October 17, 1979." Additionally signed on the half-title page by pilot Chuck Yeager and by John Glenn; one of the Mercury Seven. Fine in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket. Jacket design by Kiyoshi Kanai. A very sharp example, rare signed by Wolfe, Yeager and Glenn. Tom Wolfe began The Right Stuff at a time when it was unfashionable to contemplate American heroism. Nixon had left the White House in disgrace, the nation was reeling from the catastrophe of Vietnam, and in 1979--the year the book appeared--Americans were being held hostage by Iranian militants. Yet it was exactly the anachronistic courage of his subjects that captivated Wolfe. In his foreword, he notes that as late as 1970, almost one in four career Navy pilots died in accidents. "The Right Stuff," he explains, "became a story of why men were willing--willing?--delighted!--to take on such odds in this, an era literary people had long since characterized as the age of the anti-hero." "One of the most romantic and thrilling books ever written about men who put themselves in peril." (The Boston Globe). Basis for the acclaimed 1983 film written and directed by Philip Kaufman, starring Sam Shepard and Ed Harris. Listed by Modern Library as one of … [Click Below for Full Description]

1979. Condition: Like New. Excellent condition. Front and back covers are in great shape. No marks, writing or underling inside the report itself. Check this out. This listing is for a super rare 1979 Berkshire Hathaway Annual Report. As has often been said, these Berkshire Hathaway annual reports, including the Chairman's Letter written by Warren Buffett, are pure solid gold loaded with investing wisdom. This one is different however. It's so old the address on the back cover isn't Kiewit Plaza in Omaha, but 97 Cove Street in New Bedford, Massachusetts. This copy is used but in excellent condition. The front and back covers are in great shape. The top right corner is slightly increased. Inside the report is totally clean with no underlinings, marks or writing on it. No bends and staples are solid! Your best chance to find a copy in better condition than this is probably sitting in a vault in Kiewit Plaza! 44 total pages. Makes an incredible addition to your Berkshire annual report collection. PLUS... as a bonus, you also receive the Berkshire Hathaway March 29, 1980 quarterly Interim Report. It probably goes without saying, but I only have this one '79 Berkshire annual report and quarterly report, so when they're gone, that's it. They're gone forever. Shipping is by USPS Priority Mail with delivery confirmation (in a box to protect it from the elements)... so you'll be holding your copy of the 1979 Berkshire Hathaway Annual Report in your hands in just 2-3 business days. P.S. One last thought. It's important. As a serious collector I know once said, "When you come across a … [Click Below for Full Description]
