Publication party for David Bailey's book 'Trouble & Strife' at the Ritz Hotel. David Bailely and Marie Helvin. 1980.

      - 745 x 520mm. Giclà e Print using Archival pigment inks on Hahnemüle Fine Art Pearl 285gsm paper. Limited edition of 10 numbered copies signed by the photographer. Alan Davidson is a press photographer based in London for more than 30 years, Alan has photographed the rich, the famous, the before-they-were-famous to those that have fallen from grace. Going through his vast archive, with new treasures found within the old brown manilla envelopes, reads like a who's who of the great and good (and the very bad) of London society. Cinema stars rub shoulders with pop stars, royalty with politicians. Working from the late 1960s to the present day Alan remembers the days before celebrities became surrounded by 30 young publicists and before there were 50 photographers at every event you went to, allowing him to take intimate and relaxed portraits, unlike the anodyne syndicated press shots of today.         Cosmos.

Barcelona: Editorial Planeta, 1980. First Spanish edition of one of the best-selling science books ever published. Octavo, original illustrated wrappers as issued. Inscribed by the author on the title page, "Por Cara Shirley Con amore y admiracion Carl." The recipient was Shirley Arden, who was the executive secretary to Sagan and close friends of Sagan. Cosmos is the best-selling science book ever published in the English language. Brilliant and provocative, it traces today's knowledge and scientific methods to their historical roots, blending science and philosophy in a wholly energetic and irresistible way. "Enticing, imaginative, readable, iridescent" (The New York Times). It received the Hugo Award for Best Non-Fiction Book. It was also a thirteen-part television series written by Carl Sagan, Ann Druyan, and Steven Soter, with Sagan as presenter. It was executive-produced by Adrian Malone, produced by David Kennard, Geoffrey Haines-Stiles, and Gregory Andorfer, and directed by the producers, David Oyster, Richard Wells, Tom Weidlinger, and others. It covers a wide range of scientific subjects, including the origin of life and a perspective of our place in the universe. The series was first broadcast by the Public Broadcasting Service in 1980, and was the most widely watched series in the history of American public television until The Civil War. As of 2009, it was still the most widely watched PBS series in the world. It went on to win two Emmys and a Peabody Award, and has since been broadcast in more than 60 countries and seen by over 500 million people. It was followed-up by the 2014 documentary television series bearing the same name presented by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, who, as a young high school student, was inspired by Sagan.

[No place: no publisher, 1980. Near Fine. Samizdat edition. Quarto. 59, [1]pp. Illustrated publisher's illustrated wrappers. Pages toned, a few faint stains on the wrappers, overall near fine. Uncredited samizdat edition of Milosz's first writing after his defection to the West. First written in 1951, soon after he received political asylum in Paris, and it was first published in Paris in 1953, it immediately became a classic of anti-Stalinism. The nine essays deal with the different roles that the intellectuals take in the totalitarian dictatorship in post-war Central and Eastern Europe, their allure of Stalinism and the temptation of collaboration with the regime. The book was banned in Poland, and first published first in Eastern Europe in 1978 as an underground, samizdat edition. This edition is a photomechanically reproduced copy of the text of the 1953 Paris edition, four reduced pages of that edition printed on each page here. Rare.

Church Poems. With illustrations by John Piper. (FIRST STATE, DELUXE ISSUE)

John Murray, London 1980 - The deluxe issue of the withdrawn first edition, of which one hundred copies were produced and bound, and virtually all destroyed prior to publication. This copy signed on the colophon by John Betjeman, but not numbered, and without Piper's signature, who presumably was due to sign them later. Due to a production error, the last seven lines of the poem 'Bristol and Clifton', the two full pages of the poem 'Sunday Afternoon Service in St Enodoc Church, Cornwall' were omitted, resulting in both the trade issue and this deluxe issue being destroyed and corrected editions issued the following year. John Murray claimed that all but half a dozen copies of the trade edition were destroyed, although the actual number of survivors is almost certainly higher. This deluxe edition is certainly a great deal scarcer, Peterson identified a surviving typescript (the printer's copy) of the colophon sheet, so signed by Betjeman and with a note by Murray stating that "The signed copy also had to be destroyed of Church Poems!" This present copy however, formally belonging to Dorothy Couzens [née Liptrap], a production assistant and some-time illustrator at John Murray Ltd. between 1960-1985, is the entire text, cut from the watered silk binding (presumably re-cycled for the corrected edition) and with the original marbled endpapers now serving as makeshift wrappers. 8vo. 63pp. Top edge gilt. A very good copy - scarce as proverbial hen's teeth, this being quite probably the only surviving example of the deluxe issue of the withdrawn text.

Seven San Francisco Punk Flyer Paste-ups

[San Francisco] 1980 - Collage paste-ups for seven flyers created and obtained from artist Eddie Troia for shows at The Temple (aka The Temple Beautiful and The Geary Temple) in San Francisco in 1979 and early 1980. Cut and paste elements on letter and legal sized sheets, some with holograph text written with white out on overlays. Some elements with typical rippling from paste, near fine. A collection of paste-ups documenting punk shows at The Temple, an old Synagogue near the Fillmore and the Jim Jones Temple, which became a punk venue in 1979 but ceased having punk shows the following year. The building was damaged by the 1989 earthquake and was subsequently torn down. The mock-ups are for shows by quite a cross section of the punk, avant, and industrial bands in SF at the time, with shows by Impatient Youth, Flamin' Groovies, Alley Cats, Suburban Lawns, No Alternative, Minimal Man, The Offs, Mutants, X, Subhumans, Mondellos, Roy Loney & The Phantom Movers, Soul Rebels, Dead Kennedys, Phone Bill, Zeroes, Sleepers, and B People.Eddie Troia was a playwright, artist, and manager for Jane Dornbacker. His art is characterized by a sure use of confident holograph titles with well-chosen images from pop culture, contrasted with a cleanness resulting from the skillful use of glassine overlay. Striking and beautiful artwork documenting a very important but short-lived venue of the era, as well as a valuable look at the graphic techniques of flyer creation before the computer. It is getting more and more difficult to find original mock-ups from meaningful performances, especially in a grouping.
