The Canterbury Tales - Folio Society Limited Edition

London: The Folio Society Book. As New. Hardcover. As New, Hardcover Bound in Nigerian goatskin leather in Solander Box, Limited Edition 1980 Copies, 768pp + Illustrations Limited to 1,980 numbered copies Printed on felt-marked, laid paper, in a special shade matched to the original, made at the Favini mill near Venice Endpapers of Merida Graphite from the Varona mill, Riva del Garda Bound in Nigerian goatskin leather Blocked in 24-carat gold with a design featuring Eric Gill's engravings around a blind-blocked frame Gilding on all three book edges Black satin ribbon marker Presented in a buckram-bound solander box with gold blocking on the spine Commentary essay by Peter Holliday quarter-bound in buckram and Merida Graphite 768 pages Book size: 12 ½" x 7 ¾" A landmark of English poetry, The Canterbury Tales has appeared in many illustrated editions. This one, illustrated by Eric Gill, is among the most remarkable. The Canterbury Tales is a glorious expression of Eric Gill's genius. In this varied, vibrant work, Gill displayed his artistic versatility, and succeeded in marrying the illuminated manuscript tradition with a Modernist aesthetic. For this facsimile edition, The Folio Society has created an exquisite binding based on Gill's own designs for the Physician's and the Summoner's tales. The work itself is represented in a meticulously exact facsimile, created directly from an original copy. Copies of the original print run of 500 very rarely reach the open market, and one of the few examples in recent years sold for $9,000. This beautifully produced facsimile represents an outstanding opportunity to own this work. In their collaboration for the Golden Cockerel Press, Eric Gill and Robert Gibbings created a sublime marriage of type and illustration that became a golden standard for designers. Their great editions, from Troilus and Criseyde and The Canterbury Tales to The Four Gospels, were created through a meticulous process. The type was set with space left for Gill's borders or initial letters and illustrations; proofs were then sent to Gill, who drew his design on the proof sheet itself before transferring the illustration to the engraving block. Gill frequently revised his designs during the engraving process, which for critic Glenn Storhaug, 'contributes to the sense of immediacy and spirited invention'. Lively figures face one another across the pages, while for the beginning or end of each tale, half-page illustrations merge with the text. As Gill himself wrote, 'the engraving is part of the typography', and The Canterbury Tales is a glorious realisation of that ideal. Gill's powers of imagination can be seen in many individual touches. Into the title illustration he has incorporated a cockerel, symbol of the press. The General Prologue is illustrated with the martyrdom of Thomas à Becket, whose shrine at Canterbury was the pilgrims' goal. The opening illustration to 'The Man of Law's Tale' depicts Constance, the Christian daughter of a Roman emperor, cast adrift by her father. Gill shows her carrying her child, who appears only later in the Tale - thus creating a visual reference to the Madonna and Child. The curved timbers of the boat fuse with the swirling waves, creating a harmonious design full of tender beauty. The commentary volume by Peter Holliday An art historian specialising in typography and printing history, Peter Holliday was an assistant to the curator at Ditchling Museum, Eric Gill's home and workshop for many years. In this extended essay, first published by Oak Knoll Press and The British Library, Holliday describes Eric Gill and Robert Gibbings's work in the context of the artistic currents of the time, tracing its aesthetic evolution from William Morris's Arts and Crafts movement. It is a fascinating introduction, not only to Eric Gill's work on The Canterbury Tales, but also to the artistic theory that underpinned his designs. .

        Tehilim. [Psalms.]

Spain 12th-13th century - Hebrew manuscript; 34 folios on parchment, medieval foliation in pen in Coptic numerals, includes 34 of approximately 100 folios (collation impractical due to fragmentary state), ruled in blind, written in neat Sephardic square script in dark brown ink in a single-column of sixteen lines throughout, full vocalisation and accentuation of text by primary scribe, marginal corrections in hands of primary and secondary (perhaps also tertiary) scribes periodically throughout, marginal chapter numbers added in hand of secondary scribe in black ink, prickings visible in virtually all outer margins, justification of lines using verbal space holders and stretching of final letters, traditional stichographic arrangement of text, curlicue decorative flourishes on some letters, damp staining and browning throughout (especially on ff. 15r, 16v, 20v-23r, 27v), some foxing, small holes as well as tears in edges throughout periodically affecting text, damage especially significant on ff. 3and 22, text occasionally faded and chipped (e.g., ff. 18, 19v, 25, 28v, 33, 34v), ink transferred from another manuscript to the margin of f. 6, several pages loose at head. Modern quarter binding with brown cloth spine, gilt title on spine, blue paper flyleaves and pastedowns. Dimensions: (page size) 22-22.5 x 17-17.5 cm; binding: 23.8 x 19 cm. A very rare copy of the Book of Psalms. A very early copy of Psalms originating in the Sephardic geo-cultural orbit, almost certainly Spain, this seems to have eventually found its way eastward before being deposited in the famous Cairo Geniza, making it one of the most complete copies of Psalms from the Cairo Geniza; it is certainly a rare survival. There are no more than thirty extant Sephardic books of Psalms (usually occurring as part of complete Hebrew Bibles) before 1300, almost all of which are in public collections in Europe (one each recorded in Israel and the United States), they are very rare on the market (none have been available since 1980). Provenance 1. While the manuscript is fragmentary and has no colophon, it is possible to date and localise it approximately to the twelfth-thirteenth centuries in Spain based on the distinctive shapes of the letters pe and shin characteristic of Sephardic scribal practice in this period. 2. Considering the fragmentary nature of the text and the use of Coptic letters as its mode of foliation, it seems likely that this book was eventually brought to Egypt and ultimately discarded in the Cairo Geniza. Text ff. 1-2v, the text of Ps. 6:9b-9:21a; f. 3rv, the text of Ps. 18:4b-28a; f. 4rv,the text of Ps. 23:2b-25:8a; ff. 5-6v, the text of Ps. 49:14b-51:21; ff. 7-11v, the text of Ps. 59:12b-68:14a; ff. 12-15v, the text of Ps. 69:22b-74:12a; f. 16rv, the text of Ps. 80:4-81:9a; f. 17rv, the text of Ps. 94:14b-96:5a; ff. 18-19v, the text of Ps. 98:1b-102:14a; f. 20rv, the text of Ps. 103:10b-104:12a; ff. 21-22, the text of Ps. 106:40b-108:5a; ff. 23-24v, the text of Ps. 116:1b-119:8; ff. 25-26v, the text of Ps. 119:65-119:120; ff. 27-32v, the text of Ps. 120:1-137:2a; ff. 33-34, the text of Ps. 144:9b-147:10a. Our manuscript consists of approximately a third of the contents of the book of Psalms; in its original form, the text likely took up about one hundred folios. While we cannot know for sure, given its fragmentary state, whether it was originally composed as an independent volume (i.e., a Psalter) or as one section of a larger collection of Scripture (either the Hagiographa alone, or perhaps as part of Sifrei emet, the "poetic" books of Psalms, Proverbs, and Job), it seems likely, given its size, that it was not originally included in a full set of the Hebrew Bible. Moreover, because independent codices of the Hagiographa and of Sifrei emet from Spain are rare in this period, those two options seem unlikely as well. Instead, our manuscript was most probably (though by no means definitely) originally copied as a Psalter to be used for religious devotion or study, or both

[Photographs]: 1980s Punk Scene

1980. Near Fine/Near Fine. A collection of 38 mostly black and white, with a few color, loose photographs measuring between 3.5" x 5" to 8" x 10" with captions. Slightly curled edges else near fine or better. A cache of early photographs from the 1980s punk scene including candids, publicity photos, and live photos. The photos include bands such as Flipper, Bad Religion, Social Distortion, The Meatmen, L7, Husker Du, Black Flag, T.S.O.L., The Undead, Flipper, Die Kreuzen, and 45 Grave, among others. The live shows are from dive bar shows to outdoor festivals showing on stage antics like Jack Grisham, singer of T.S.O.L., holding a microphone to his crotch, as well as Husker Du playing at Sam's bar with bassist Greg Norton sporting the band's own t-shirt, and an early L7 show. There is also a photo of the Dead Kennedys playing a show in Finland in 1981 which includes a random hand in the crowd giving the finger. Some of these appear to have been used for reviews and articles about the bands with notes on the verso like "please return after use," a photo of a young G.O.H. reads "notice our nice tans." The publicity photos from labels such as SST, Touch and Go, and Reflex were taken by some of the biggest names in the scene including Glen E. Friedman, Joe Cultice, Bobby Castro, and Michael Jang, and depict staged full band shots of the Meat Puppets, Black Flag, and Flipper, among others. An extensive assortment of unique images depicting the 1980s punk scene.

Publication party for David Bailey's book 'Trouble & Strife' at the Ritz Hotel. David Bailely and Marie Helvin. 1980.

      - 745 x 520mm. Giclà e Print using Archival pigment inks on Hahnemüle Fine Art Pearl 285gsm paper. Limited edition of 10 numbered copies signed by the photographer. Alan Davidson is a press photographer based in London for more than 30 years, Alan has photographed the rich, the famous, the before-they-were-famous to those that have fallen from grace. Going through his vast archive, with new treasures found within the old brown manilla envelopes, reads like a who's who of the great and good (and the very bad) of London society. Cinema stars rub shoulders with pop stars, royalty with politicians. Working from the late 1960s to the present day Alan remembers the days before celebrities became surrounded by 30 young publicists and before there were 50 photographers at every event you went to, allowing him to take intimate and relaxed portraits, unlike the anodyne syndicated press shots of today.
