        Dancing in Emilia

Ivrea: Priuli & Verlucca, 1980. Prima edizione (First edition). ril, custodia (hard cover, slip-case). Perfetto (Mint). 8vo.

1980-2005. A collection of 1155 cards advertising various artist shows and gallery openings in the Los Angeles area from the early 1980s until the mid 2000s. All cards are near fine or better with some slight edgewear from mailing. The assemblage includes invitations to some of the most intriguing West Coast art shows of the last few decades including, "The Sissy Art of Eric White," an exhibit of art by Owen Smith (renowned for the art from the Aimee Mann album The Forgotten Arm), and the Bettie Page pin up artist, Olivia. From the Eric White show Peter Frank, reviewing for LA Weekly, wrote that "His dream-state scenes, full of puzzled faces, double-images, anachronisms and attenuated unlikelihoods are painted with a vertiginous exactitude, its wooziness enhanced with bilious colors, weird superimpositions, and a tendency to render everything a little wobbly and elongated---El Greco goes suburban." Over the years Los Angeles has proved to be an important center for new artists. The work plays on an extraordinary variety of themes including most obviously, Hollywood, celebrity, and Disney culture as well as with the Chicano culture of the city's Spanish roots. The images show everything from sultry women to trash on the side of the highway. Every trend of the last few decades is displayed amongst the plethora of cards. A unique gathering of over 1100 exhibition cards for artists collected over the years documenting the increasingly changing tides of art in Los Angeles. .

        Pleasure & Function

[New York / LA : The Offices of Fend Fitzgibbon, Holzer, Nadin, Prince and Winters, 1980]. Near fine in stapled wrappers.. First Edition. Top-stapled zine, 24 pages, with the business card of The Offices of Fend, Fitzgibbon, Holzer, Nadin, Prince and Winters stapled to the front cover. A catalogue issued either in conjunction with or concurrent to an exhibition in downtown Los Angeles, February 1980, in the studio of David Amico, entitled Pleasure/Function, featuring the artists Peter Fend, Colen Fitzgibbon, Jenny Holzer, Peter Nadin, Richard Prince, and Robin Winters, whose group business card promised "practical esthetic services adaptable to client situation" and "our consultation includes a review of your needs and suggestions for realistic action." This short-lived collaborative, whether it was really an art advisory service, an advice corporation, or something else entirely, did produce at least this zine, which is rare to the point of almost nonexistence. A "stopper" for Richard Prince collectors; one of the greatest pieces of art ephemera of the era; scarcer than even Prince's Spiritual America invitation.

3). -- ISBN 3-7276-7009-6 (Bd. 1), 3-7276-7010-X (Bd. 2), 3-7276-7059-2 (Bd. 3) -- NETTOGEWICHT 3.6 kg

Three Large Photographs taken at a Gay Pride Parade

[San Francisco?. circa 1980]. Three black and white photographs, measuring 11" x 14", laid into mat frames, with tissue guards, mounted inside three large portfolios, measuring 14.75" x 19". Each photograph has been very lightly hand-colored with tonal highlights (light pink, lavender, and blue), very sparingly and neatly applied mostly on dresses and other clothing. A fine set of compelling images of lesbian, gay, and transgender parade participants, most likely taken at a San Francisco Gay Freedom Day (Gay Pride) Parade duing the late 1970s/early 1980s. The large, close-up images include a topless woman in a studded leather harness flanked by teenage boys; two transgender women marching in drag; and a group of Native American men sitting together on a blanket (one of whom is wearing a T-shirt: "Gay American Indians") alongside children playing in a crowded park. The two women in drag are carrying handmade signs that read: "We Queen's are the first in the Kingdom we come with a message of Love & Peace understanding" and "I am Universal." Although we have been unable to positively identify where the photographs were taken, they all closely resemble Ted Sahl's famous series of photographs of the San Francisco Pride Parades taken from 1977-1984. .

A People's History of the United States

New York: Harper & Row, 1980. First edition, first printing of the historian's magnum opus. Thick Octavo. Signed by Howard Zinn on the title page. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a few small closed tears. The nicest example we have seen of this title, as most copies were read and re-read. The New York Times wrote that author "[p]rofessor Zinn writes with an enthusiasm rarely encountered in the leaden prose of academic history, and his text is studded with telling quotations from labor leaders, war resisters and fugitive slaves. There are vivid descriptions of events that are usually ignored, such as the great railroad strike of 1877 and the brutal suppression of the Philippine independence movement at the turn of this century. Professor Zinn's chapter on Vietnam - bringing to life once again the free-fire zones, secret bombings, massacres and cover-ups - should be required reading for a new generation of students now facing conscription." Howard Fast declared A People's History to be "[o]ne of the most important books I have ever read in a long life of reading...It's a wonderful, splendid book - a book that should be read by every American, student or otherwise, who wants to understand his country, its true history, and its hope for the future.
