[Photo Album]: Woman traveling in China 1980

China, 1980. Very Good. Quarto measuring 9" x 11" A photo album with a thin basket weave design over the stiff paper boards. Contains 125 color photographs measuring 3.5" x 4.5" with very few captions. Slight waviness on the boards and edgewear thus very good with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by a woman while traveling in China for roughly nine months in 1980, between January and September. While there are almost no captions the verso of most of the photos have a month and day written on them. The photos are of usual tourist sights around Beijing including the Great Wall of China, Tiananmen Square, and the Temple of Heaven. These photos show the woman, who is a middle-aged blonde woman, posing by the landmarks with other members of a tour group as well as Chinese people. Also included in the album are two newspaper clippings about New York Mayor Koch's trip to China in 1980, whether there is any connection to that trip is unclear. She also photographed the local Chinese people. One of these photos shows a woman with a megaphone in Tiananmen Square who later poses with the compiler of the album. Other photos show children playing, people in a market, Chinese officials in uniform, and numerous people on bicycles (the bicycles in Beijing so impressed Mayor Koch that he implemented bike lanes in New York upon returning from his trip). The group also visited the waterways of the area and photographed numerous ships which included those with beautiful decorative sails. Additionally there are also photos of the group trying local cuisine as well as photos of the chef at a restaurant they frequented. Many of the billboards and advertisements photographed are in Chinese with one translated which reads, "the just struggles of the people of all countries support each other." By the end of her travels she was even sporting an Asian style blouse and had seemed to take to the culture she had immersed herself in for almost a year.An interesting collection of travel photography from a woman's nine month trip to China.

[POSTER] Departure Lounge 84 Oxford St. Open 11a.m. - 2a.m.

[Sydney, N.S.W. : Departure Lounge, circa 1980]. Colour screenprint, from two stencils, 755 x 510 mm; in good condition; unbacked. In the early 1980s, Departure Lounge was a cafe and live music venue located at the lower end of Oxford Street, Darlinghurst, immediately next door to another infamous venue, French's Tavern. At the time, the edgy Departure Lounge was certainly one of the coolest locales in Sydney, although it could be genuinely dangerous, unlike the sanitised venues of modern-day hipsterdom. Nick Cave played there, Kraftwerk ate there, and it was the scene of countless gigs by groups that were part of Sydney's vibrant "little band scene". A far cry, indeed, from the sterility and inertia created by Sydney's current lock-out laws. From around 1985 the venue became known as The Globe. "I had the Departure Lounge next door to French's & I had to drill the teaspoons so the junkies wouldn't hit up. There was the night .... that I dragged out a junkie & just tipped him down Crown Street (which is quite steep!)" (From an article published on Frenchstavern.com) A significant relic of the bohemian culture of inner Sydney in the early 1980s, this poster for Departure Lounge appears unrecorded in Australian collections.

From the publisher: "Two of the world's leading scholars of the Aztec language and culture have translated Sahagún's monumental and encyclopedic study of native life in Mexico at the time of the Spanish Conquest. This immense undertaking is the first complete translation into any language of Sahagún's Nahuatl text, and represents one of the most distinguished contributions in the fields of anthropology, ethnography, and linguistics. Written between 1540 and 1585, the Florentine Codex (so named because the manuscript has been part of the Laurentian Library's collections since at least 1791) is the most authoritative statement we have of the Aztecs' lifeways and traditions-a rich and intimate yet panoramic view of a doomed people. The Florentine Codex is divided by subject area into twelve volumes and includes over 2,000 illustrations drawn by Nahua artists in the sixteenth century. Arthur J. O. Anderson (1907-1996) was an anthropologist specializing in Aztec culture and language. He received his MA from Claremont College and his PhD in anthropology from the University of Southern California. He was a curator of history and director of publications at the Museum of New Mexico in Santa Fe and taught at a number of institutions, including San Diego State University, from which he retired. Charles E. Dibble (1909-2002) was an anthropologist, linguist, and scholar specializing in Mesoamerican cultures. He received his master's and doctorate degrees from the Universidad Nacional Autónomo de México and taught at the University of Utah from 1939-1978, where he became a Distinguished Professor of Anthropology. For their work on the Florentine Codex, both Dibble and Anderson received the Mexican Order of the Aztec Eagle, the highest honor of the Mexican government; from the King of Spain the received the Order of Isabella the Catholic (Orden de Isabel la Católica) and the title of Commander (Comendador)."The set includes: -Introduction and Indices.         Flowers.

New York: Harmony Books, 1980. First edition of this iconic collection of photographs of flowers taken between 1967-1973. Quarto, original beige cloth. Signed by the author in the year of publication, "Irving Penn New York 1980" on the half-title page. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with light toning. Irving Penn was an internationally known American photographer who became popular for his work in fashion photography. He worked at Vogue magazine, and he photographed for Issey Miayke and Clinique. His work serves as an example of excellent photography even today. Irving Penn said befittingly of his work, "[s]ensitive people faced with the prospect of a camera portrait put on a face they think is one they would like to show the world. ...Very often what lies behind the facade is rare and more wonderful than the subject knows or dares to believe" (1975). His photography is reverently held at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, both of which also hold collections of personal materials that relate to Penn's career.
