Behind Policeman's Shoulders - original artist photograph document

Wroclaw 1980 - 297 x 210 mm. Two b/w photographic self-portraits by the Polish artist Walcalw Ropiecki, mounted on card. Size of silver gelatin print photographs: 176 x 116 mm each. The artist used the camera to take photographs of himself, in a manner reminiscent of present day selfies, with the subject matter and text often reflective of his place as an artist within Poland's authoritarian state. Ropiecki took part in the Fabrynka exhibitionOther original photographs for the publication were exhibited in June 2017 at the Texto+Contexto exhibition in Espacio El Dorardo in Bogota, curated by William Allen. Other examples of Ropiecki's self-portraits are available on request. Condition: Near Fine. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Photo Album]: Woman traveling in China 1980

China, 1980. Very Good. Quarto measuring 9" x 11" A photo album with a thin basket weave design over the stiff paper boards. Contains 125 color photographs measuring 3.5" x 4.5" with very few captions. Slight waviness on the boards and edgewear thus very good with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by a woman while traveling in China for roughly nine months in 1980, between January and September. While there are almost no captions the verso of most of the photos have a month and day written on them. The photos are of usual tourist sights around Beijing including the Great Wall of China, Tiananmen Square, and the Temple of Heaven. These photos show the woman, who is a middle-aged blonde woman, posing by the landmarks with other members of a tour group as well as Chinese people. Also included in the album are two newspaper clippings about New York Mayor Koch's trip to China in 1980, whether there is any connection to that trip is unclear. She also photographed the local Chinese people. One of these photos shows a woman with a megaphone in Tiananmen Square who later poses with the compiler of the album. Other photos show children playing, people in a market, Chinese officials in uniform, and numerous people on bicycles (the bicycles in Beijing so impressed Mayor Koch that he implemented bike lanes in New York upon returning from his trip). The group also visited the waterways of the area and photographed numerous ships which included those with beautiful decorative sails. Additionally there are also photos of the group trying local cuisine as well as photos of the chef at a restaurant they frequented. Many of the billboards and advertisements photographed are in Chinese with one translated which reads, "the just struggles of the people of all countries support each other." By the end of her travels she was even sporting an Asian style blouse and had seemed to take to the culture she had immersed herself in for almost a year.An interesting collection of travel photography from a woman's nine month trip to China.

Ilam Sarvi ke Eistaad / Ilam, The Cypress Which Stood

Tehran: Jahad Daneshgahi c. 1980s - First Edition. Square quarto. Compelling wartime photobook with stark, journalistic black and white photographs of the Iran-Iraq War. The cover design, with an image of fleeing refugees montaged over a photograph of empty bullet casings and blood-red title text exemplifies the Iranian photobook style of unflinching realism tinged with propaganda colorings of sacrifice and martyrdom. Although documentation seems to be Aghaei's primary motivation, he several times returns to images of himself taken in distorted mirrors, half his face obscured by the camera. A dark and poetic book. Farsi text. Some light edge wear, overall close to near fine in photo-illustrated wrappers. Scarce, no copies located in OCLC.
