Nearly Complete Run of The Wine Advocate, Issues 1-162; 1978-2005

Maryland: Robert M. Parker Jr.. 1978-2005. First printing. Paperback. Very Good. Almost complete run of this revolutionary wine journal! From 1978 until 2006, this print journal single-handedly shifted the focus of serious American wine consumers from French to American vintners. Born The Baltimore-Washington Wine Advocate, and later simply The Wine Advocate, creator Robert M. Parker's 100 point scoring system became the standard measure quality, influencing not only consumers and sellers but the producers of the wines as well. This set contains every issue of the journal except for volumes 67 and 68 (as well as missing the introductory first page of issue 1), and they are contained in 12 three-ring binders. Volumes 1-6 are mimeographed/Xeroxed copies, with the more professional cardstock staple bound issues beginning with the seventh volume. An additional 30 or so duplicates are included with the collection. All issues are in Very Good condition, with only a couple issues showing soil or signatures. Additional shipping fees will be required. Handsome set of this scarce journal!

[New York: Chartoff / Winkler Productions], November 1978 and February - April 1979.. Two volumes. [2],103 leaves and [1],101,[1] leaves plus lettered inserts. Quarto. Mimeographed typescript, printed on rectos only, the latter on white, green and blue stocks. Brad and boltbound in plain wrappers. Wrappers somewhat worn and marked, ink name in each (see below), slight marginal discoloration to fore-edge of a few late leaves in the first, some marginal fraying to a few leaves in the latter, some inevitable thumbing and corner creasing from use, but good copies, internally very good. Two different preproduction drafts of Scorsese and De Niro's revision of Paul Schrader's screenplay, which was itself a major revision of Mardik Martin's preliminary script, adapted in large part from Lamotta's 1970 memoir. The evolution of the script and the revisions evidenced here are treated in part in Kelly's MARTIN SCORSESE A JOURNEY, in the chapter "Blood on the Ropes." The February draft incorporates additional revisions via dated revises spanning February to April. RAGING BULL was a critical film in director Scorsese's career, and the December 1980 release, starring De Niro, Cathy Moriarty, Joe Pesci, et al, garnered a number of award nominations, both domestic and international, along with several wins. In 1990 it was inducted into the National Film Registry. These examples of the two drafts (copies #37 and #69 respectively) each bear the ownership signature of Les Lazarowitz, one of the sound mixers for the production. It is accompanied by Lazarowitz's original 6 x 12" screenprinted production parking permit. Legitimate examples, with provenance, of the screenplay for this landmark American film are very uncommon.

Jun Morinaga - River, its shadows of shadows

Yugensha, Tokyo, 1978. hardcover with slipcase. fine. An amazing book of photographs of river waters, taken by the photographer who was assistant to W. Eugene Smith in Japan in 1961 & 1962. These images were taken by Morinaga from 1960 to 1963. He established his own studio in 1969., In his introduction, Smith writes in part: "The photographs in this book contain no actual human beings. Yet, to me, these photographs hauntingly seethe with undercurrents of the damnation factors of our times... To appreciate them the viewer must break any narrowness of traditional recognitions...It is an experience worth the effort...There are few photographs that profoundly move me, that change my life. Jun Morinaga's photographs did both.... Many months after Jun was working with me, he sat on the floor and we tried to converse. He spoke that "You are the master, what can I do to improve my photographs?" And I replied with all the sincerity of my being -- "In what you do you are the master -- I only wish I could photograph as well.", , Quoted in "Japanese Photobooks of the 1960s and 70s", p. 218-219.

The Basketball Diaries [First Edition, Signed by Carroll]

Bolinas: Tombouctou, 1978. Paperback. Very good. Couple of light creases to the spine, otherwise a spectacular, possibly unread fine copy with virtually none of the edgewear or rubbing usually seen on what are even called "nicer" copies. Signed in red by Carroll on the title page. The best copy we've seen and no doubt as good as it gets for this title. wbc
