Jay, Ricky
New York: Darien House, 1977. First edition. Near fine in a very good jacket.. Original full yellow cloth with black titles. In original unclipped ($9.95) jacket. Illustrated throughout with numerous black-and-white photos. 94, [2] pages. Small stain to verso of jacket at bottom edge, not visible from front and not effecting book - unobtrusive. Small closed tear to top of spine. Else bright and sharp. Uncommon hardcover first printing of actor, writer, and legendary sleight-of-hand artist Ricky Jay's first book. It is difficult to explain this book to the uninitiated. Will you learn to throw cards long distances? Perhaps with sufficient speed and strength to puncture the the thick, pachydermatic rind of a watermelon? Yes. Yes you will. But by naked women demonstrating proper form (of the Alexander Hermann method, to be precise). Will you learn to defend yourself with a deck of playing cards? Yes, but none of the techniques will actually work (check out MYTHBUSTERS S2 E12 for a thorough debunking, with an assist from Jay himself). CARDS AS WEAPONS is by turns earnest (Jay held several world records in card throwing at the time), parodic, hilarious, brilliant, and utterly original - like the author himself. A well above average example of a book typically found with significant condition issues.

Tzara, Tristan
Paris: Jacques Damaze, 1977 (originally published in 1923). Livre d'Artiste. 54/125 copies signed by the artist (total edition: 150). 12 brilliant lithographs, 8 of them reproducing vivid geometric designs by Sonia Delaunay of costumes designed for Tristan Tzara for the production in 1923 of his Dada play "Le coeur á gaz" ("Gas-operated heart"). 50 + [6] pp. The design of the book is based on a layout by the publisher and typographie by Guy Levis Mano (glm) who published the text in 1946. 16 separate gatherings of three leaves folded from single sheets of Arches and printed one side only; the last one is blank. Folded size: about 45 x 20 cm. Some of the inks used in the illustrations have caused pale, unavoidable oxidation of the paper on facing pages. The scans crop the blank lower margins of the larger pages by about 1.7 cm (the limit of the scanner). The double spread at p. 38 omits the nearly blank right quarter of p. 39; the black-and-white image of the formally dressed couple on pp. 46-7 crops the wide side margins. Random faint shadows at the edges are artifacts of the scanning. A glossy black pasteboard folder contains the book and fits within a matching sleeve. A couple of little nicks to the top edge or the cover; some wear to the external parts. Otherwise, fine.

CLARKE, Arthur C.
Random House, New York, 1977. First edition. Fine in fine dustwrapper with slight toning to the edges of the flaps. Inscribed by Arthur C. Clarke to his protégé, one-time secretary, and longtime friend Ian Macauley; "To Ian, this souvenir of a quarter century! All the best, Arthur. NYC 11 Oct. 77." Macauley, an award-winning *New York Times* journalist, was the dedicatee of Clarke's first published hardcover novel, *Islands in the Sky* (1952). He also edited Clarke's book of collected essays, *Greetings, Carbon-Based Bipeds!* (2000). Clarke wrote the last chapter of *Childhood End*, while visiting Macauley in Atlanta, where he was reportedly greatly influenced by their discussions. A nice association copy of this miscellany, including speculations on space, science and the sea, a short science-fiction story, and "an equatorial autobiography." Macauley has made several pencil and pen alterations in the text, apparently while preparing the essays for the collected volume. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Used with wear and tear. Heinemann 1977. Signing events were rare in those days, not like today. These early signed copies were usually to friends and family, before they were even released into book stores. You can tell by the style of signature and handwriting what are early signed copies. This was however a much later signed book and unique for being line-signed Aside from its fine dust jacket which is the finest we've ever seen on this title, that it is signed with a line for the book makes it unique. Rarely are the spine title colors this true. Note that the Heinemann titles are the most scarce, especially in good condition as they print runs were smaller. The dust jackets were made of cheaper paper and coating. Wilbur wasn't yet a household name. In fact the later titles even signed, have no value unless in mint condition. We had only two of these signed like this. I borrowed line-signing from other authors events as a means to add more writing, ensuring it wasn't a forgery signature. Sadly forgers will arise whenever money can be made from a famous person's signature. It very much personalizes the book without making unique to one person only. I discussed with Wilbur choices of lines and he personally selected this one. However, Niso objected to line-signing and wouldn't allow him to sign anymore after my selections. These were a personal favor to me. I'm not aware he's ever done this for any other fan since making these line-signed books one of a kind. We are selling a special Wilbur collection on behalf of a client. Wilbur will be releasing his memoirs this Spring … [Click Below for Full Description]

Berlin, 1977-1978. Various formats, mostly A4. Overall very good. Hosted by the Technische Universität in Berlin and attracting over fifteen thousand attendees from around the world, the TUNIX meeting laid the groundwork for non-violent, grassroots German alternative politics. One of its main goals was to discuss new strategies of resistance in the light of the recent RAF terrorist attacks, which marked the so-called "German Autumn" of 1977. As one historian notes, TUNIX was "a watershed moment for the new left. In the aftermath, the left split into different directions. A plethora of new 'projects' developed, ranging from cafés to bookshops..." (Joachim C. Häberlein, The Emotional Politics of the Alternative Left, p. 228). Among the projects presented was what would eventually become the Tageszeitung (taz); the congress also indirectly prepared the rise of the Green Party and stimulated a whole range of self-started projects ranging from gay rights to environmental activism. The present group contains an illustrated folded broadside titled "Treffen in TUNIX. Westberlin 27.-29. 1. 1978," which lists participating organizations and major themes. It also includes the official program for the event, which lists various lectures, discussions, film screenings, performances, and demonstrations, as well as affiliated bars and restaurants, and a map showing feminist-related happenings and sites. Further included is an invitation for the event ("Aufruf zur Reise nach TUNIX"); two rare TUNIX stickers; and seven other broadsides to accompany specific events during the gathering.

Baltimore, David; Renato Dulbecco; James D. Watson
New York: Elsevier, 1977. First edition of this collection of lectures related to molecular biology delivered by Nobel Laureates between 1933 and 1975. Octavo, original wrappers. Signed on the half-title page by David Baltimore, Renato Dulbecco and James D. Watson and by each at the first page of their contribution, for a total of six signatures. In near fine condition. Molecular biology arose as an attempt to answer the questions regarding the mechanisms of genetic inheritance and the structure of a gene. In 1953, James Watson and Francis Crick published the double helical structure of DNA courtesy of the X-ray crystallography work done by Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins. Watson and Crick described the structure of DNA and the interactions within the molecule. This publication jump-started research into molecular biology and increased interest in the subject. In 1962, all three were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine "for their discoveries concerning the molecular structure of nucleic acids and its significance for information transfer in living material". [Click Below for Full Description]

Ray Kroc
1977. Rare Signed RAY KROC Book "Grinding It Out" JSA Authentication. "The two most important requirements for major success are: first, being in the right place at the right time, and second, doing something about it." -Ray Kroc McDonald's visionary founder Ray Kroc signed leather bound edition of his book, ''Grinding It Out'', published in 1977. Is the story of a founder's journey building the worlds largest fast food chain empire in history. Few entrepreneurs can claim to have actually changed the way we live, but Ray Kroc is one of them. His revolutions in food service automation, franchising, shared national training and advertising have earned him a place beside the men who founded not merely businesses but entire new industries. But even more interesting than Ray Kroc the business legend is Ray Kroc the man. Not your typical self-made tycoon, Kroc was 52 when he met the McDonald brothers and opened his first franchise. An incredible story that teaches us dreams don't have deadlines. Bound in terra cotta leather boards with all edges gilt, gilt lettering to spine and gilt golden arches to front board. This book has been beautifully signed on the first page of the book, in Ray Kroc's own hand "Ray A. Kroc", in blue ballpoint pen, and has been authenticated by third party experts from the top authenticators in the country. Notarized certificates of authenticity are included in a black leather portfolio with this item. Charles M. Schulz
New York: Holt, Rinehart & Winston, 1977. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine in archival protective cover. First Edition, First Printing is indicated by the full number line on the copyright page. SIGNED on the front free endpaper by Charles Schulz. Signed copies of this title are extraordinarily RARE. "Abner Doubleday may or may not have invented the game of baseball, but it can safely be said that Peanuts has reinvented it. No other sport, indeed no other facet of life, has proved a more delightful mainstay of Peanuts humor, or a firmer bedrock of Peanuts wisdom. (Does Charlie Brown on his pitcher's mound represent Job on his ash heap, as one critic has pondered?) With never a win to their credit, Charlie Brown and his hapless teammates hang in there, surviving one hilarious disaster after another, their views of life undimmed by either continual blunder or occasional brilliance. Here, collected for the first time in one volume, is the cream of Peanuts and baseball -- 640 daily and Sunday strips, with 80 pages in full color. No special knowledge of the game is required to enjoy what happens when Charlie Brown takes the field -- full of strategy and optimism -- with his singular teammates arrayed in questionable support: among them, a catcher who worships Beethoven, a four-legged shortstop, a second baseman attached to a security blanket, and a chronic fussbudget in the outfield. All the great episodes of Peanuts-on-the-diamond are here: Snoopy's pursuit of Babe Ruth's home-run record; Charlie Brown's encounter with his hero of heroes, J … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lynch, David (director, screenwriter); Jack Nance, Charlotte Stewart, Allen Joseph, Jeanne Bates (starring)
Los Angeles: American Film Institute [AFI], 1977. Collection of six vintage oversize borderless double weight photographs from the 1977 film. With agency stamps on the verso of five of the photographs and a label with the film's title in French and English affixed to the recto of four photographs at the lower left corner. David Lynch's first feature film. The AFI provided the director with use of their lot (where he also lived during much of filming) at no charge, but he had difficulty getting financial assistance from them on the basis of his 20-page script and decidedly unorthodox methods. Terence Malick screened the film at one point for a financial backer, who walked out, calling the movie "bullshit". A bad call, as the film's wild success on the midnight movie circuit--and subsequent success as a legitimate art film--gained the vocal admiration of everyone from Charles Bukowski to Stanley Kubrick. 12 x 9.5 inches. Near Fine. National Film Registry. Criterion Collection 725. Rosenbaum 1000.

Stephen King
near fine in near fine dj. Stephen King (1977) 'The Shining', US first edition, first printing, published by Doubleday. Signed and inscribed by King on the ffep: "For Paul - with all good wishes - Stephen King, October 14, 1978". All first issue points present: 'First Edition' on the copyright page; the 'R49' gutter code on page 447 as called for. Dust jacket correctly priced at USD 8.95. One of only 25,000 copies printed which was less that King's debut 'Carrie'. Condition: near fine in near fine dust jacket. No previous owners' scribbles, no bookplates, no stamps. Clean throughout. Visibly unread copy, still taut and unopened pages. Boards clean, not bumped, no foxing, no remainder spray. Spine lettering vibrant and not rubbed out. Tiny amount of rubbing to tips of the thin and fragile black cloth. The dust jacket is NOT faded on the spine. There is a very small scratch on the spine and a vertical smudge on the rear flap. Otherwise a nice dj specimen, not price clipped. 'The Shining' was adapted by Stanly Kubrick for cinema and is regarded as the best horror film of all time even though King himslef does not approve of the visul translation, so he produced his own TV rendition more recently. If one had to choose one book for which Stephen King will be remembered it would probably be 'The Shining'. It is well written, and also because young King worked some of his personal experiences into the book: writer's block, struggle with alcohol, and stay at the 'Overlook Hotel' (The Stanley Hotel) in the Rockies with his family. First and Fine. [Attributes: First Edition]
