Sultan, Larry and Mike Mandel
Greenbrae, California: Clatworthy Colorvues, 1977. First edition of this groundbreaking collection of 59 evidentiary photographs selected from diverse archives, documenting crime scenes, scientific experiments, industrial tests, and natural disasters. Slim oblong quarto, original dark blue cloth gilt. Signed by both authors on the title page, "Mike Mandel 6-21-77" and by Larry Sultan. Afterword by Robert F. Forth. In fine condition. With the advent of "art photography" in the 1960s and 70s came a somewhat pretentious insistence by the artistic community that only "artists" could create valuable photographs. When Evidence appeared, it shifted our appreciation of the photograph toward something more than a purely artistic expression, and forever designated "found images" and "candid shots" as acceptable in the photographic arts. In the afterword to this collection, art professor Robert Forth warns (tongue in cheek) that to interpret evidence correctly, we must "underpin and surround the evident with more circumstantial materials," that archeology, for example, "is nothing more than sociology without live people around to fill in the gaps between the remains." Roth 101, Parr & Badger; Photobook.

1977. This rare treasure is a personal note & signature/autograph from Leonid Brezhnev, former Soviet premier, & a rare photograph of Brezhnev & Fidel Castro on one of the first few blank pages of the 1977 Soviet book, Star City. The note reads, "I consider the hours and minutes spent among you, my dear friends, together with Fidel, to be happy." The photograph is pasted onto the blank page. It was not part of the printing of the book. While there are many photographs of Brezhnev & Castro together, I could not find this specific photograph online. Their meeting might have been related to the Interkosmos Program that resulted in a Cuban cosmonaut (& those of other nations) in space. The photograph also has a rocket sculpture or plaque, and the book is related to the Soviet space program. Звездный городок ("STAR CITY"), Moscow, 1977, written by V. A. Shatalova & G. T. Beregorovogo This illustrated book is from Moscow from the year 1977. Hardback book. Tight binding. No dust jacket. I have gone through this book. It is not new, but I could find no tears on the pages. There are a few light stains on a handful of the pages & on the cover, but everything is still legible. One of the stains is on the page with the signature & photograph. The Brezhnev/Castro photograph & the Brezhnev note/signature are in excellent condition & are not affected by the stain. This book is in Cyrillic Russian. There is no English in this book. Please see my other Russian space book listings. Please see pictures as they are part of the item description. Stephen King
near fine in near fine dj. Stephen King (1977) 'The Shining', US first edition, first printing, published by Doubleday. Signed and inscribed by King on the ffep: "For Paul - with all good wishes - Stephen King, October 14, 1978". All first issue points present: 'First Edition' on the copyright page; the 'R49' gutter code on page 447 as called for. Dust jacket correctly priced at USD 8.95. One of only 25,000 copies printed which was less that King's debut 'Carrie'. Condition: near fine in near fine dust jacket. No previous owners' scribbles, no bookplates, no stamps. Clean throughout. Visibly unread copy, still taut and unopened pages. Boards clean, not bumped, no foxing, no remainder spray. Spine lettering vibrant and not rubbed out. Tiny amount of rubbing to tips of the thin and fragile black cloth. The dust jacket is NOT faded on the spine. There is a very small scratch on the spine and a vertical smudge on the rear flap. Otherwise a nice dj specimen, not price clipped. 'The Shining' was adapted by Stanly Kubrick for cinema and is regarded as the best horror film of all time even though King himslef does not approve of the visul translation, so he produced his own TV rendition more recently. If one had to choose one book for which Stephen King will be remembered it would probably be 'The Shining'. It is well written, and also because young King worked some of his personal experiences into the book: writer's block, struggle with alcohol, and stay at the 'Overlook Hotel' (The Stanley Hotel) in the Rockies with his family. First and Fine. [Attributes: First Edition]

Austin, Mary; Adams, Ansel (Photographer); Angelo, Valenti (Decorations)
Boston: New York Graphic Society, Facsimile Edition [printed by Lawton and Alfred Kennedy], 1977. Adams, Ansel; Angelo, Valenti. Limited Edition. No. 777 of 950 copies, elephant folio size, [79] pp., signed by Ansel Adams. "Taos Pueblo", a collaboration between renowned photographer Ansel Adams (1902-1984) and nature writer Mary Austin (1868-1934) has been called "the greatest pictorial representation of the American West" and marked a transition in Adams' career to his "signature sharp-focused images of Western landscape" (n.b., info and quotes from Wiki). Originally printed in 1930 by the Grabhorn Press, "Taos Pueblo" was issued in a small edition of 108 copies and contained original photographs of the pueblos and Southwest United States by Adams. This publication by brothers Lawton and Alfred Kennedy is the facsimile edition of that seminal work, done forty years later; collectible in and of itself, it is a lovely reproduction of a significant work illuminating this part of the Southwest. Ansel Adams has signed this facsimile edition (the original was signed by both Adams and Austin). The facsimile includes the woodcut decorations by Valenti Angelo (1897-1982), a highly regarded designer, illuminator, and decorator of books over a career that spanned decades, doing much of his early work for the Grabhorn Press and the Book Club of California; the decorations are reproduced from the original and perfectly complement the photography and essay. ___DESCRIPTION: Quarter tan leather with orange cloth boards, blind lettering on the leather of the front board, the spine with fiv … [Click Below for Full Description]

New York: Holt, Rinehart & Winston, 1977. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine in archival protective cover. First Edition, First Printing is indicated by the full number line on the copyright page. SIGNED on the front free endpaper by Charles Schulz. Signed copies of this title are extraordinarily RARE. "Abner Doubleday may or may not have invented the game of baseball, but it can safely be said that Peanuts has reinvented it. No other sport, indeed no other facet of life, has proved a more delightful mainstay of Peanuts humor, or a firmer bedrock of Peanuts wisdom. (Does Charlie Brown on his pitcher's mound represent Job on his ash heap, as one critic has pondered?) With never a win to their credit, Charlie Brown and his hapless teammates hang in there, surviving one hilarious disaster after another, their views of life undimmed by either continual blunder or occasional brilliance. Here, collected for the first time in one volume, is the cream of Peanuts and baseball -- 640 daily and Sunday strips, with 80 pages in full color. No special knowledge of the game is required to enjoy what happens when Charlie Brown takes the field -- full of strategy and optimism -- with his singular teammates arrayed in questionable support: among them, a catcher who worships Beethoven, a four-legged shortstop, a second baseman attached to a security blanket, and a chronic fussbudget in the outfield. All the great episodes of Peanuts-on-the-diamond are here: Snoopy's pursuit of Babe Ruth's home-run record; Charlie Brown's encounter with his hero of heroes, J … [Click Below for Full Description]

Honourius ] Translated and Edited by Daniel J. Driscoll .
Heptangle Books, Gillette, NJ, 1977. Hardcover. Large 8vo. xxvi+ 112 pp. Quarter green cloth w/ patterned papered boards, printed paper title label on spine. The scarce first Heptangle edition, limited to 450 numbered copies. This copy is also signed on the limitation page by the editor. The true Heptangle First edition - with red names and titles and blue initials printed throughout. The text is Driscoll's version of "The Sworn Book of Honorius" (Liber Iuratus Honorii) one of the oldest and most important works of mediaeval magic, supposedly compiled by a group of magicians so that their work would survive them in the event of persecution. While Driscoll's version of the text has not been without its critics, the work was pioneering both in terms of making the text available in English translation, and for the production of a grimoire as a handsomely printed object of virtu. Cloth spine is sunned, old NYC Weiser label on front pastedown, a little light foxing to page fore-edge, endpapers unevenly browned. Still, overall- a tight bright near Fine copy (no dust jacket). BUKOWSKI, Charles (1920-1994
[Los Angeles]: 1977. Two pages, 4to (280 x 215 mm; 11 x 81/2 in.), on cream typing paper, stapled. 51 lines, with 11 corrections to punctuation. Item #401191 Bukowski constructs a poem out of the pit of insomnia, and life-pressures, "dead cat on the boulevards. / de Sade grinning in the dark. / more trouble in the government. [...] getting an erection / from looking at the girl cashier. / 'how you doing?' she asks / 'I need my teeth drilled,' tell / her [...]" Published in Dangling in the Tournefortia (Black Sparrow, 1981, p. 182). Aubrey Malone, in The Hunchback of East Hollywood: A Biography of Charles Bukowski, references this poem as an example of Bukowski's "incredibly jumpy mind" (p. 126). Malone notes that in this poem, and in two others in the same collection, Bukowski "leaves us in little doubt that he likes to be left alone to get on with the business of wordmaking without the intrusions and handshaking brain pickers - but of course we knew that anyway" (ibid.).
