Beck, Lothar and Max Dans
1977. Unpaginated photobook dedicated "allen noch lebenden Widerstandskämpfern des Dritten Reiches", comprised of approximately 29 black-and-white images from the funeral of three members of the RAF, each accompanied by a short explanatory text on the opposite page, with some pages of just text taken from contemporary newspaper reports, the images depicting the open graves and graveside before and during the funeral, as it becomes a public spectacle and the cemetery fills with spectators and media. Oblong 8vo. Original photo-illustrated wrpps., some slight soiling to cover, very minor wear to edges and spine, overall very good. Hannover (Internationalismus) 1977. On October 27th, 1977, photographer Max Dans attended the funeral of Andreas Baader, Gudrun Ensslin, and Jan-Carl Raspe, three founders and leaders of the RAF (Roten Armee Fraktion) who allegedly committed collective suicide while in prison. They were jailed for allegedly orchestrating several bombings, which caused the deaths of four people. Most media coverage of the funeral ignored the presence of a large police force, and Dans wanted to provide a different perspective. While examining the photographs later with his friend Lothar Beck, a priest, they came up with the idea to produce this photobook. As of May 2020, WorldCat only locates two holdings of this work in North American libraries.

Ursula K Le Guin
London: Victor Gollancz, 1977. First collected edition of the first three Earthsea books by Le Guin. These are some of the finest fantasy of the 20th century. This is an odd edition: the three novels each have their own pagination. This volume has become very scarce. This volume shows slight bumping at the spine ends, some browning of the pages (the paper on British volumes of this period is notorious for this problem), and is otherwise clean and crisp throughout. The jacket shows no tears or marks, and is not price-clipped. If you wish more pictures, please ask.

King, Stephen
Doubleday. Stephen King (1977) ‘The Shining’, US first edition, first printing, published by Doubleday. Signed and inscribed by King on the ffep: “For Paul – with all good wishes – Stephen King, October 14, 1978”. All first issue points present: ‘First Edition’ on the copyright page; the ‘R49’ gutter code on page 447 as called for. Dust jacket correctly priced at USD 8.95. One of only 25,000 copies printed which represents a lower print run of King’s debut novel ‘Carrie’. Condition: near fine in near a fine dust jacket. No previous owners’ scribbles, no bookplates, no stamps. Clean throughout. Visibly unread copy, still taut and unopened pages. Boards clean, not bumped, no foxing, no remainder spray. Spine lettering vibrant and not rubbed out. Tiny amount of rubbing to tips of the thin and fragile black cloth. The dust jacket is NOT faded on the spine. There is a very small scratch on the spine and a vertical smudge on the rear flap. Otherwise a nice specimen, not price clipped. ‘The Shining’ was adapted by Stanly Kubrick for cinema and is regarded as the best horror film of all time even though King himslef does not approve of the visul translation, so he produced his own TV rendition more recently. If one had to choose one book for which Stephen King will be remembered it would probably be ‘The Shining’, not least because of Kubrick’s seminal adaptation, but also because young King worked some of his personal experiences into the book: writer’s block (or fear of), recovery from alcoholism, and stay at the ‘Overlook Hotel’ (The Stanley Hotel) in the Rockies with his family … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

[Vietnam War]: [Thailand]
[Various places in Thailand, perhaps centering on Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base, 1977. Seventy-seven Kodak color photographs, almost all approximately 3 1/2 x 5 inches, a handful slightly smaller, and one postcard. Slim quarto. Contemporary glossy purple floral-patterned cloth photograph album, gilt- stamped label on front cover. Some images slightly faded. Overall very good. A highly-entertaining collection of vernacular photographs capturing the lives of young African-American G.I.s and their romantic interests in a village in Thailand during the latter years of the Vietnam War. The photographs show African-American men in both uniforms and street clothes, often posed alone or with Thai locals, almost exclusively women. The men are seen at work and play, including an image of the gun shop with a sign labeled "Phase Section" on the front and a large military van with a similar sign reading "2 Orange." There is also a great deal of coverage of the locals living in the village, including women and children. One photograph of particular interest shows part of a commercial building emblazoned with both a Coca-Cola and a Pepsi sign. The date range of 1972 to 1977 stems from the fact that some of the photographs are date-stamped in the margin "Oct 72" and one later image is stamped July 1977; most images seem to emanate from the earlier date. The single postcard is an image of Wang Not Ten Waterfall in Phitsanulok, in north-central Thailand. The album could possibly have been retained by a local Thai person documenting their interactions with the visiting Americans. The … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: Chrysalis Records, 1977. Cardboard covers. Near Fine. Very scarce promotional stand-up cardboard cut-out and notepad ("Blondienotes"), featuring Debbie Harry and created for the release of Blondie's second studio album, "Plastic Letters" (December 1977, UK label Chrysalis Records). The cut-out, measuring 12 1/8" high, presents Debbie Harry sporting a strappy fuscia dress, and the notepad's Barbie-pink pages feature her coquettish gaze. A life-size version of this cut-out was featured in the 1982 film "Fast Times at Ridgemont High", where character Mike Damone uses "Debbie" as a prop while describing his five-point plan for getting girls. The dress Harry wears was designed by Taiwanese-American designer and dominatrix Anya Phillips, who died of cancer in 1981 at age 26. About Phillips, Debbie Harry said, "She was a powerful energy source that's now missing from the scene, an example of how intense willpower is charisma" ("Making Tracks"). Both pieces of promo ephemera are in Fine condition. [Attributes: First Edition]
