THE LOVE POEMS OF IRVING LAYTON With Five Original Lithographs by Graham Coughtry

Toronto: Canadian Fine Editions. 1978. Large 4to, p. 101. . Printed in 1978 in three editions: an unremarkable trade edition, a limited edition of two hundred copies, signed by author and artist, and bound in quarter suede and brown cloth, and this extraordinary - very special - edition, limited to thirty copies of which this is copy number 23, signed by both Layton and Coughtry at the colophon. Bound in full brown suede, with the title stamped in gilt to the front board, over and under a smaller reproduction of one of the artist's lithographs, which has been tabbed to the board. All edges gilt. Each page of the text printed on an uncut quarto sheet. Each of the five tipped-in lithographs are hand-numbered and signed by the artist. Spine shows a bit of sunning. Small (one inch) "ghost" of tape (?) to lower left of rear board, causing darkening to the suede. Pastedown to front board shows a touch of soiling. Binding otherwise tight and in very good condition. Contents pristine. A magnificent copy. .

        Ali's Smile. Naked Scientology

Bonn: Expanded Media Editions,, 1978. Small octavo. Original illustrated wrappers. Two-page black and white portrait frontispiece. Rubbing to extremities, but otherwise a very good copy indeed. First collected edition, with the text in German and English, reprinting Burroughs's letters, reviews and articles (and a short story) on Scientology. This a fantastic association copy, with Allen Ginsberg's ownership inscription to the first blank, "Allen Ginbserg Aug 30 1979, City Lights", and Burrough's inscription on the title page to Allen Ginsberg, "For Allen, love William S. Burroughs". Ginsberg has additionally noted in his own hand on the first blank, "June 12, 1980. signed". Burroughs was introduced to Scientology by his friend Brion Gysin in the late 1950s, and joined the movement for about a decade. He was interested in its promise to free the mind by cleansing it of traumatic experiences, and his "cut-up" technique in his early books was influenced by Hubbard's theories in Dianetics about the epistemological liberation of fracturing consciousness. He soon became disenchanted with the organisation's secretive and authoritarian nature, and was expelled in 1970. The bulk of the pieces reprinted here date from the months and years immediately following his expulsion, and show him giving full rein to his spirited, sardonic resistance to all forms of authority: "No body of knowledge needs an organizational policy. Organisation policy can only impede the advancement of knowledge. There is a basic incompatibility between any organization and freedom of thought. Suppose Newton had founded a Church of Newtonian Physics and refused to show his formula to anyone who doubted the tenets of Newtonian Physics?" As Burroughs's biographer Ted Morgan has noted, he "had hoped to find a method of personal emancipation and had found instead another control system." This inscription to Ginsberg, to whom Burroughs had written as early as 1959 urging him to join the cult, is highly appropriate insofar as both Ginsberg and Burroughs both stood strongly for any form of open enquiry that might lead toward personal liberation, yet against any form of authority that might restrict that tendency. A superb association.

Jacket art by M.S. Chiang. Octavo, 338 pp. Sky blue cloth boards with gilt imprint. Pictorial wraparound [illustration continues around and on to back cover] dust jacket. Fine book in a very, very near fine unclipped jacket with just trace micro-touching at edges. Please see scans. O'Brien's acclaimed third novel, considered one of the finest examples of Vietnam War fiction. Ostensibly the story of a soldier going AWOL and deciding to just walk from Vietnam to the lights of Paris, it is, of course, much more. So highly thought of that two of its chapters won individual awards. An American classic already. Scarce signature. L-44n

        The World According to Garp

New York: E.P. Dutton, 1978. First edition of the author's fourth breakthrough novel. Octavo, original half cloth. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with just a touch of rubbing to the top right panel. Signed by the author, who has added the final words of this novel, "In [The World According to Garp], we are all terminal cases John Irving." A very sharp copy, with a nice inscription. The World According To Garp is a comic and compassionate coming-of-age novel that established John Irving as one of the most imaginative writers of his generation. A worldwide bestseller since its publication in 1978, Irving's classic is filled with stories inside stories about the life of T.S. Garp, novelist and son of Jenny Fields. "There is something of Byron about John Irving. Not only is it that he woke after the publication of The World According To Garp to find himself famous, but the extremity of his opinions and the nervous violence of his language recall that intemperate noleman, and like Byron, he would certainly say that love is no sinecure" (Robertson Davies).

Both drawings, rendered by medical illustrator Ida G. Dox of Bethesda Maryland (who signs the lefthand drawing "Dox"), are housed in a 25" x 15.5" mat bearing her credit on the verso. Both illustrations are covered by a sheet of heavy art paper bearing a stamped note: "DO NOT TOUCH SURFACE OF DRAWING". Offered with a 10" x 8" photograph of Washington D.C. police test firing Oswald's rifle on a shooting range.
