Scully, Marlan O., Yoon-Ho Kim, R. Yu, S. P. Kulik, and Y. H. Shih "A Delayed Choice Quantum Eraser" in Physical Review Letters 84 No. 1, January 3, 2000, pp. 1-5 WITH Jacques, Vincent E., Wu, Alain Aspect, Philippe Grangier, et al. "Experimental Realization of Wheeler';s Delayed-Choice Gedanken Experiment" in Science 315. No. 5814, February 6, 2007, pp. 966-968 WITH Peruzzo, Alberto, Peter J. Shadbolt, Nicolas Brunner, Sandu Popescu, and Jeremy L. O'Brien "A Quantum Delayed Choice Experiment" AND by Florian Kaiser, Thomas Coudreau, Pérola Milman, Daniel B. Ostrowsky, and Sébastien Tanzilli "Entanglement-Enabled Delayed-Choice Experiment" in Science 338 No. 6107, November 2, 2012, pp. 634-637 and 637-640

      - THREE INDIVIDUAL ISSUES IN ORIGINAL WRAPS HOUSING THE FIRST EDITIONS OF FOUR FAMOUS QUANTUM EXPERIMENTS RELATED TO WHEELER'S DELAYED CHOICE EXPERIMENT.In 1978, Einstein's last collaborator John Wheeler conducted a milestone thought experiment that has come to be known as Wheeler's delayed choice experiment. Wheeler's paper has generated many subsequent quantum experiments, among them the four famous papers collected here.In Wheeler's 1978 experiment, "a single photon has two paths it could take in an interferometer. In its wave character, the photon will take both paths simultaneously. In its particle character, the photon needs to decide which of the two paths it will take. Wheeler proved, in accordance with quantum mechanics, that the decision whether the photon will behave as a wave or as a particle can be [made] even after it has already entered the interferometer" (Science News, January 9, 2013). The first of the four papers offered here, . "A Delayed Choice Quantum Eraser," published in 2000, by Marlan O. Scully, Yoon-Ho Kim, R. Yu, S. P. Kulik, and Y. H. Shih, describes the first successful "quantum eraser" experiment and incorporates concepts considered in Wheeler's delayed choice experiment. The quantum eraser experiment "achieves the same effect as "delayed choice" by encoding path information on individual particles at the slits but then sometimes "erasing" this encoding later at the experimenter's choice. According to theory, erasure of particle encoding should result in the appearance of wave characteristics despite the fact that the particles had passed through the slit before the encoding was removed" (Wenner Collection). Scully and Kim's, et al. experiment was a complicated construction. "It is set up to measure correlated pairs of photons, which are in an entangled state, so that one of the two photons is detected 8 nanoseconds before its partner. The results of the experiment are quite amazing. They seem to indicate that the behavior of the photons detected these 8 nanoseconds before their partners is determined by how the partners will be detected. Indeed it might be tempting to interpret these results as an example of the future causing the past. The result is, however, in accordance with the predictions of quantum mechanics" (Wikipedia). The second of the papers, "Experimental Realization of Wheeler's Delayed-Choice Gedanken Experiment" by Vincent Jacques, E. Wu, Alain Aspect, Philippe Grangier, et al.,was published in 2007. It was the first to carry out Wheeler's original predictions and is known as the first successful execution of Wheeler's delayed choice experiment. Closely following Wheeler's original line of thought, "wave-particle duality is strikingly illustrated by Wheeler's delayed-choice experiment, where the configuration of a two-path interferometer is chosen after a single-photon pulse has entered it: Either the interferometer is closed (that is, the two paths are recombined) and the interference is observed, or the interferometer remains open and the path followed by the photon is measured. We report an almost ideal realization of [Wheeler's] experiment with single photons allowing unambiguous which-way measurements. The choice between open and closed configurations, made by a quantum random number generator, is relativistically separated from the entry of the photon into the interferometer" (Jacques et al., 2007). The third and fourth papers appear in the same November 2, 2012 issue of Science and both describe "sophisticated demonstrations of the wave-particle duality of single quanta" (Wikipedia). Both also describe Wheeler delayed choice experiments in which the choice about which path the photon takes is made AFTER the measurement is made. The third, by Peruzzo et al., "uses Bell inequalities to replace the delayed choice devices, but it achieves the same experimental purpose in an elegant and convincing way" (Wikipedia). The fourth, by Kaiser et al., specifically notes that "wave and p

        Traces Suspectes en Surface

Universal Limited Art Editions, West Islip, NY 1978 - Portfolio with 36 lithographs by Rauschenberg and text by Robbe-Grillet. Printed on specially made Twinrocker paper, with the watermark of the artist's and author's signatures, it comprises 31 pages plus the title page and 4 colophon pages, printed from 37 stones and 27 aluminum plates, numbered [1],1-31, I-IV. 20-1/2 x 26 3/16 inches (52 x 69 cm.) folded. Copy 34 of a total edition of 36, plus 6 A.P. copies (the colophon calls for six, but they are numbered through 7). Signed and dated by Rauschenberg and signed and numbered by Robbe-Grillet on each of the 31 pages, each carries the embossed folio number and publisher's seal. Fine condition in original red cloth clamshell box, designed by the artist, as issued. With two of the original aluminum offset plates on which Robbe-Grillet wrote the text, a set of ten proof pages for the text before illustrations, and a sheet which Robbe-Grillet used for practice, before writing out the manuscript. "Long enamored of French literature and language, Tatyana Grosman attended a lecture by Alain Robbe-Grillet in April 1972. When the writer mentioned Robert Rauschenberg's work, Mrs. Grosman, already aware of stylistic similarities between the two, felt that a collaboration was fated. Two days later, it was underway. During the next four years, Mrs. Grosman sent offset plates to Paris and proofed and translated Robbe-Grillet's text in West Islip; Rauschenberg added images one chapter at a time. The completed pages were sent back to Robbe-Grillet with plates for the next chapter. It soon became clear that Robbe-Grillet was not working in the spirit of sympathetic collaboration but providing a massive text that presented great problems in page design. Rauschenberg responded with images that are much more aloof than in previous books yet responsive to the elegance of the text," Esther Sparks, Universal Limited Art Editions, pp. 447-459.         Portfolio I

1978. Signed. JACOBI, Lotte.Portfolio I.New Hampshire: Self-published, 1978.Limited artist?'s proof portfolio, number four of only five copies, a rare self-published edition containing ten original silver gelatin hors commerce proofs, each signed and numbered in pencil by Jacobi on the lower corner of the image, featuring some of her finest portraiture from before 1940, including her trademark Self-Portrait, her famous image of Einstein in a leather jacket and portraits of leading Weimar figures such as Lotte Lenya, Peter Lorre and Kurt Weill.?"Few photographers captured the heady spirit of the Weimar Republic known for its cultural glitter if not its political success, with the panache of Lotte Jacobi?" (New York Times). Her memorable images of the famous came to define modern photographic portraiture. Of this portfolio?'s ten vintage gelatin silver prints, each an artist?'s proof signed and numbered by Jacobi, eight were taken in Germany before she fled the Nazis in 1935, and two were taken shortly after her arrival in America. Jacobi?'s talent for capturing the essence of her subjects is particularly evident in her image of Peter Lorre. Infamous for his portrayal of ?"poisonous screen characters like the child-murderer in Fritz Lang?'s M before he moved to Hollywood,?" the actor had answered Jacobi?'s request for a portrait with a ?"terse ?'Yes, but only one… He arrived for the sitting in a proper white shirt and tie. Jacobi shot him as close up as possible, managing to capture his villainous look but softening it by shooting from above. It was the only shot she was allowed, it has turned out to be a classic.?" Another singular portrait, ?"perhaps Jacobi?'s most memorable photograph from the Weimar era and said to be her own favorite picture, is a sultry close-up of Lotte Lenya in 1928, here eyes and mouth heavily punctuated by stage makeup. In rehearsal for her role as Jenny the prostitute in The Threepenny Opera, she stares challengingly at the camera, her chin resting on her right arm, a cigarette in her hand?" (New York Times). Of particular importance is Jacobi?'s 1938 portrait of Albert Einstein ?"in a rumpled leather jacket, hair askew and looking dreamily into space as he passed from writing formulations in his notebook… One of Jacobi?'s most famous images,?" it had been commissioned by Life but was rejected for its informality. Other classic photographs included are: a 1928 portrait of the Czech-born actor Franz Lederer in a bowler hat with downcast eyes; a distinctive 1930 portrait of composer Kurt Weill, Jacobi?'s powerfully direct 1931 image of artist Käthe Kollwitz, a 1930 photograph of Grock the Clown (Adrian Wettach) and, from the same year, Jacobi?'s portrait of comedic actors Karl Valentin and Liesl Karlstadt. Further, Jacobi?'s 1939 tribute to the influential Alfred Stieglitz, taken in New York, is one of the few that captures him in a genial smile, and her trademark 1930 Self-Portrait provides a rare glimpse of this artist who rarely allowed herself to be seen on film.A fine copy.

        Traces Suspectes en Surface

West Islip, NY: Universal Limited Art Editions, 1978. First edition. Rauschenberg, Robert. Portfolio with 36 lithographs by Rauschenberg and text by Robbe-Grillet. 447-459.

        Staffrider

Braamfontein: Ravan Press. 1978. Advance or trial copy of Volume 1, No. 1 of Staffrider, a South African literary journal dedicated to being a popular outlet for writing by and for South Africans of all races and classes, and not just the elite and educated. The title of the journal is taken from "the slang for people hanging outside or on the roof of overcrowded, racially segregated trains," Prints Coetzee's poem "Hero and Bad Mother in Epic." Possibly Coetzee's only published poem. The text block for the magazine is unopened and uncut, currently longer than the covers to which it is laid in, indicating this is an unfinished, unpublished example. This example, which has a date of March 1978 for Volume 1, No. 1, would seem to correct information currently online that the magazine started publishing in 1977. Some foxing to pictorial covers; in all a very good copy, now housed in a folding chemise and slipcase. A special copy of the first issue of an influential South African journal, dating from the apartheid era and part of the movement that eventually ended with the dismantling of apartheid. First Edition. Hardcover.

Iran Bastan Museum. Oriental Ceramics, The World's Greatest Collections Vol. 4. Introduction Firouz Bagherzadeh.

Tokyo: Kodansha, 1978 - 317 S. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Dr. Wolfram Kleiss, langjährigem Leiter der Außenstelle Teheran des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts. Nr 145/300 Exemplaren. Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - Text auch englisch. - The Museum of Ancient Iran or Iran-e Bastan was designed by French architect Andre Godard in the early 20th century. It has a built area of approximately 11000 square meters. Began in 1935 and completed within two years by Abbas Ali Memar and Morad Tabrizi, the museum building was officially inaugurated in 1937. The second building, Museum of the Islamic Era, built on the grassy grounds of the old one, went through quite a few and hasty changes of the interior, and was still being remodeled when the Revolution of 1979 swept the country. While the old building always had a clear mandate to show archaeological relics (to also include some rare medieval textiles and rug pieces), the new building began its life by featuring the exquisite Amlash pottery from the prehistoric Caspian Sea regions of Iran. This was followed by some modern arts, and the repeated gutting and remodeling of the interior. ja Gewicht in Gramm: 3550 Mit zahlr. auch farb. Abb. Originalleinen in Leinenfaltschachtel.
