The Silmarillion -by J R R Tolkien ---with Fold Out Map at Rear ( METHUEN CANADA PRESENTATION Issue )( The Lord of the Rings / The Hobbit / Middle Earth related)

London, England: London, UK: George Allen & Unwin ( Methuen Canada ), 1977, 1st Edition, First Printing ( Toronto, ON - METHUEN PRESENTATION Issue ) , 1977. ----------hardcover, a Near Fine copy, in a dark blue leather (or leather type material), JRRT design in gilt on spine and front board, a wee bit of fading to blue on the upper edge of the text block as usually seen, this is the METHUEN Canada Presentation issue with the special leather (or leather type ) binding which was issued without a dustjacket nor a slipcase, small Methuen presentation slip tipped-in on the title page, one of an undetermined number of Canadian presentation copies (but likely not more than a couple of dozen and certainly fewer than 50 copies ) ---as per Hammond and Anderson a "small number of copies of the Clowes impression were specially bound in dark blue leather, upper cover and spine stamped in gilt, for presentation by the publishe --- the printer's info on the copyright page is correct mentioning 11 on 12 point type and Clowes, black and red fold out map at rear is intact, black and red map facing page 121, ---published after JRRT's death this was edited by Tolkien's son Christopher with the uncredited assistance of Guy Gavriel Kay, ---contents include: Foreword; Ainulindale; Valaquenta; Quenta Silmarillion (The History of the Silmarils ); Akallabeth; Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age; Tables - genealogies ( House of Finwe / Descendants of Olwe and Elwe / House of Beor / House of Hador and The People of Haleth ) The Sundering of the Elves; Notes on Pronunciation; Index of Names; Appendix - Elements in Quenya and Sindarin names,---" The Silmarillion is the core of J.R.R. Tolkien's imaginative writing, a work whose origins stretch back to a time long before The Hobbit. -Tolkien considered The Silmarillion his most important work, and, though it was published last and posthumously, this great collection of tales and legends clearly sets the stage for all his other writing. The story of the creation of the world and of the First Age, this is the ancient drama to which the characters in The Lord of the Rings look back and in whose events some of them, such as Elrond and Galadriel, took part. The three Silmarils were jewels created by Feanor, most gifted of the Elves. Within them was imprisoned the Light of the Two Trees of Valinor before the Trees themselves were destroyed by Morgoth, the first Dark Lord. Thereafter, the unsullied Light of Valinor lived on only in the Silmarils, but they were seized by Morgoth and set in his crown, which was guarded in the impenetrable fortress of Angband in the north of Middle-earth. The Silmarillion is the history of the rebellion of Feanor and his kindred against the gods, their exile from Valinor and return to Middle-earth, and their war, hopeless despite all their heroism, against the great Enemy. --This is the story of the First Age, the ancient drama to which characters in "The Lord of the Rings" look back. "---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine (see description)/No Jacket as issued. Illus. by J R R Tolkien cover Design.

"Cicero's astonishing energy can be seen in everything that he wrote, a body of work unparalleled among those that have come down to us from classical antiquity. The forensic speeches which made him the foremost lawyer of his time show him principally as an able advocate for the defence. His prosecution speeches, notably that against Verres, the corrupt governor of Sicily, are equally effective, and they rise to an unequalled height in the famous 'Philippics' - those onslaughts on Mark Antony, modelled on the speeches of Demosthenes against Philipp of Macedon, which Antony never forgave and which brought Cicero to his death. His political and philosophic works have been accused of lack of originality, to which Cicero would have been the first to confess: there were few philosophic work in Latin, except for the Epicurean work of Lucretius which Cicero, a Stoic, opposed. His moral treatises and dialogues are thus largely works of translation and adaption, but non the less influential for that." PMM 64.         A Scanner Darkly (publisher's long galleys)

New York: Ballantine Books / Del Rey, 1977. First Paperback edition. Unbound galleys. Very good +. Publisher's long galleys, unbound, measuring 8" x 22". 90pp (rectos only). Publisher's label affixed (upside down) to the first leaf. Overall in very good or better condition, with a large closed tear on the title leaf (not affecting any text), a stray ink mark on the same leaf, and some very minor chips and tears at the extremities of the rest of the pages. A nice, clean example. A Scanner Darkly first appeared in hardcover the same year, published by Doubleday. Dick had been frustrated with Doubleday, however, mostly over financial issues, and took a strong liking to his editor at Ballantine Books, Judy-Lynn Del Rey. Del Rey spent some real time with Dick between 1973 and 1977, going over the manuscript page by page. Contractual obligations stipulated that Doubleday would publish the hardcover, but the real work on polishing the novel (which had originally been set in the 1960s) was done by Dick and Del Rey in the intervening years between 1973 and 1977. Del Rey convinced Dick to change the setting to the 1990s (thus changing the setting from the past to the future), and by the time the book was done, Dick had this to say about Del Rey: "Judy-Lynn Del Rey is probably the greatest editor since Maxwell Perkins: she showed me how to create a character. I've been selling novels for twenty-two years, and she showed me how to develop a character." (LORD, Rc. Pink Beam: A Philip K. Dick Companion. Lulu. com (2007)). So, while these galleys are not specifically for the true first edition of the novel, they represent the importance of the close relationship that Dick shared with the legendary science fiction editor, Judy-Lynn Del Rey, and the long and arduous process that the two of them endured endured to complete this - perhaps Dick's most personal - novel.

In Patagonia.

1977 - London, Jonathan Cape, 1977. 8vo. Publisher's blue cloth, with illustrated dust wrapper, titled in gilt to spine, and endpapers illustrated in blue; pp. [iv], 204; black and white photographic illustrations; discolouration to spine of dust jacket, price clipped, otherwise a very good copy with minimal signs of wear or prior readership. First Edition. Chatwin's first book set the tone for much of his subsequent travel-writing. As the dust-wrapper affirms: "Writing with sympathy, humour and clarity of observation, the author charts not only the exotic contrasts of Patagonia's landscape, but also the strange life-histories of the eccentrics and exiles who live there. At once adventure story, historical investigation and romance, In Patagonia defies classification and captures the essence of an extraordinary and remote corner of the world".         A collection of flyers, broadsides, handbills, booklets and other ephemera printed at the gay anarchist collective print-shop, Come!Unity Press

New York, 1977. Folio and smaller. Fine with occasional minor paper flaws. Folio and smaller. Come!Unity Press was a gay anarchist collective print shop on East 17th Street in New York City in the 1970s. Founded with an initial measure of support from the Quaker Project on Community Conflict, from January 1972 the press operated as a 24-hour shared working/living space, and among the stated goals was "Survival by Sharing", to "unplug from profit", and to provide "equal access to the poor, printing movement alternatives to imperialism, war and rape." Powered by an A.B. Dick sheet-fed offset press, Come!Unity Press offered free access to the printing press as well as free materials for political and social activism, especially among the black, Puerto Rican, and gay and lesbian communities, as well as feminist organizations, theater groups, free schools, antiwar and international solidarity movements, the American Indian Movement, and individual artists and poets. There was a close connection between the press and WBAI-FM, the New York City free radio station, as well. The present collection represents a broad range of material printed on the press, much of it visually striking and all of it with the uncompromising spirit of radicalism which breathed through the activist groups which made use of the Come!Unity resources. Comprising: "A Gay Science Fiction Magazine," color printed poster, 14 x 8 1/2 inches, printed by the Gay Science Fiction Collective, no date, soliciting contributions of content and money to help begin the magazine, and announcing the first work discussion meeting. "When Freedom is Outlawed Only Outlaws Will Be Free" / "Where Were You in '72," two-sided color-printed illustrated poster printed, 17 x 11 inches, recto advertising a concert at Central Park, a March to Abolish the Police State, and a rally during the Democratic Convention, with sub-headline "Stop 1984 in 1976! Stop Cointelpro! Stop S-1!" and illustration of smiling man with American flags stuck in his cap holding a noose; verso with two columns of text about the 1972 Miami convention, printed in rainbow colors. "Impeach Nixon," color printed poster, 11 x 17 inches, by guerilla graphics, no date [ca. 1972], on green paper, verso with "break de chains" poster by the National Committee for the Defense of Joanne Chesimard [Assata Shakur] & Clark Squire. "Impeach Nixon," color printed poster, 11 x 17 inches, by guerilla graphics, no date [ca. 1972], printed over proof sheet of a booklet on an Environmental Bond Issue. Discarded proof sheets from one printing project would often be used for test printings of other projects, as is the case with this specimen. "Impeach the Presidency and the System - Not Just the Chief / Nobody for President - We Don't Need a King!" Printed broadside, 17 x 10.5 inches, on peach-colored paper, with illustration at top of a frieze of skulls wearing various rulers hats, by the Anarchs of New York, n.d. [ca. 1973], in part "Removing a single criminal from the White House is some slight relief, but it won't get at the causes of the crimes ... ABOLISH THE PRESIDENCY, THE EXECUTIVE BRANCH - AND THE STATE." "10th Anniversary Easter Be-In (On Behalf of Letting People Be)," broadside poster, 17 x 11 inches, promoting the event in Central Park on April 10, [1977], and adding "Don't forget the May 14th Smoke-In in Washington Square Park, the the 4th of July Smoke-In in Washington, D.C." "Reallocating $ as a resource," color printed group statement/manifesto, 17 x 11 inches, on blue paper, ca. 1972, reproducing on the verso a hand-written explanation of the mission of the Come!Unity Press, the costs of running the press, etc, over an illustration of machine drums, verso with an illustration of the Manhattan skyline with a Che Guevara quote inset and surrounded by the names of dozens of local collectives and the motto "If we don't do it / it won't get done," multiple copies. Another example of "Reallocating...," on pink paper, multiple copies. "Pacifica WBAI 99.5fm Free Radio Under Fire, The Making of a Silent Minority" color-printed broadside, 17 x 11 inches, [1971], printing an editorial by Lowell Ponte calling attention to attempts by the FCC to strip Pacifica radio of its licenses, multiple copies "The American Indian Revelation," printed broadside, 11 x 17 inches, by the American Indian Movement, with dollar bill/American flag illustration incorporating Native American portrait at center with "Support Wounded Knee" at bottom, verso with Pacifica Free Radio Under Fire broadside Phillipines Information Bulletin. Vol 1 Number 2 March-April 1973. Published by the American Friends of the Filipino People (AFFP). 8 ½ x 11 inches. Illustrated. 34 pp. Staple bound illustrated wrappers.
