Schleimann
LIKE NEW. ONE-OF-A-KIND LEATHERBOUND SET by Heinrich Schleimann, privately rebound 1976 editions. Extremely rare. Look absolutely great on a shelf next to your Easton Press titles. Towards the end of last century, a shabbily dressed old scholar was to be seen wandering over an obscure mound in Asia Minor. In his coat pocket he always carried copies of the Iliad or the Odyssey. He had discovered ancient Troy. Most unscientific of archaeologist, Heinrich Schliemann nevertheless founded the modern science of archeology. Schliemann had made four fortunes. He had traveled half the world, sired three children by a Russian wife, and learned a dozen languages. Perseverance had turned this penniless grocer clerk into the successful businessman personified. Yet for many years his wealth had tasted like ashes. He still did not know what he wanted. Then, while studying philology at the Sorbonne in his 46th year, he remembered the stories of the ancient Greek heroes--and set out to uncover buried Troy. his search was quickened by a fierce hunger for gold. Instinctively he chose his spots and ordered the workmen to dig. twice he discovered great treasures of gold. Then he secured a divorce and asked a Greek bishop to find him a new wife who was good, beautiful and an enthusiast for Homer. With the lovely seventeen-year old Sophia, whom he chose from a photograph, he began his most successful archaeological excavations. Against hope, against all the evidence, this strange man discovered the walls of Troy, King Priam's palace and enough antiquities to furnish a whole museum. These leather … [Click Below for Full Description]

1976. A complete run in 24 issues of the feminist French arts and literature journal, founded by Xavière Gauthier (pseudonym of Mireille Boulaire) with the goal of giving women a place to express themselves freely through writing and imagery, including prose and poetry, each issue corresponding to a specific theme or topic and with an individual subtitle, themes include food, prostitution, prisoners, death, blood, desires, and many others. Profusely illustrated throughout. Lg. 8vo. Orig. wrpps. Some minor wear to wrpps. Paris 1976-1982. The first issue begins with an essay by Gauthier titled "Pourquoi Sorcières?", in which the founder describes why she chose "Witches" as the name of the journal, citing the fact that witches dance, they sing, they live, and they enjoy, and have only historically appeared ugly and wicked because they posed a threat to a male-dominated society. Over the course of its publication, many well-known artist and writers made contributions to Sorcières, including Hélène Cixous, Annie Leclerc, Marguerite Duras, Chantal Chawaf, Nancy Huston, Viviane Forrester, and Julia Kristeva, et. al. The subtitles of each issue are as follows: 1. La Nourriture 2. La Voix 3. Se Prostituer 4. Enceintes. Porter, Accoucher 5. Odeurs 6. Prisonnieres 7. Ecritures 8. Fidelites 9. Le Sang 10. J R R Tolkien
Folio Society. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien. These are the 1976 Folio Edition, 1st Impressions. This set of two books, are the first Folio Society publication of The Hobbit. They are examples of the two Folio Society variants, both in Near Fine condition with slipcases. These are the true 1st printings of the 1st Folio Edition. Brown cloth and leather. (Maroon coloured edition being the 2nd printing of the Folio edition as per Hammond). Here you have both states with one having the Folio Society Title page, and the second Title page does not state "Folio Society" as it should, instead the pages are identical to the 1976 A&U Deluxe edition!Per Hammond, the Folio Society was to take the Deluxe edition pages and remove certain pages from the beginning (title page, copyright page, etc) and replace them with the Folio pages. However, a very few of the books were bound by the Folio Society with all of the original Deluxe pages included and not replaced with Folio pages, but with the binding being the Folio format.Very Scarce indeed!Very unusual and extremely hard to find both variants. Frank Herbert
USA: Putnam, 1976. Very Good/Very Good Signed. First Edition with no mention of subsequent printings (First printing); FLAT SIGNED by the author on the front free end paper. A very good plus book in a very good plus dust jacket. A handsome copy of this novel which is the 3rd in the Dune saga, extremely scarce in the first impression in collectible condition, particularly signed. This very good book is clean and bright with white pages and bright spine lettering but does show some minor shelf wear to the spine ends and a slight looseness to the binding (it's been read a couple times, no loss of integrity to the binding). Housed in a VG dust jacket that shows some mild rubbing and chipping to the spine ends, edges, and corners, and a small closed tear to the top edge of the front panel. Overall, a nice copy that would grade near fine in some circles, this is a lovely collectible copy. Not remaindered, not price clipped, not ex-library; in archival protection. Baskin, Leonard
[Northampton, Mass.]: The Gehenna Press, 1976. Baskin, Leonard. Limited Edition. No. 107 of 450 copies, quarto size, 42 pp., inscribed by Leonard Baskin. Leonard Baskin (1922-2000) was an artistic genius whose works almost defy categorization. Eminent in sculpting, illustration, printmaking and also as a typographer and printer, he pursued multiple art forms all of which have, as an underlying thread, social consciousness and a high regard for humanity (N.B., above information from the website of the Galerie St. Etienne). Mr. Baskin founded The Gehenna Press in 1942 while at Yale University, taking his inspiration from William Blake's example as both a poet and an artist/bookmaker. This book, published by the Gehenna Press in 1976, contains 19 drawings by Baskin of various mythological and frightening humans and beasts, and features an ORIGINAL PENCIL SKETCH of the head and upper body of a skeleton, signed by him and dated 1992; on the facing page he inscribed the work: "for ----- from Leonard Baskin". ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in marbled paper boards, black leather spine label with gilt lettering, plain endpapers, blue paper title page printed in red and black, the original pencil sketch on the recto of the flyleaf prior to the title page with the inscription facing, the sole text in the book following the title page comprised of a quote from St. Bernard of Clairvaux, the book was printed by Harold McGrath in the autumn of 1976 "on various interesting papers" (per the book's colophon). Gabriel García Marquez
Harper & Row, Publishers, 1976. First Edition, First Printing. This is a copy of the first U.S. edition, first printing (with number row ending in "5" and "First U.S. Edition" slug present. Subsequent printings removed the "First U.S. Edition" slug). Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine in archival protective cover. SIGNED with a lengthy inscription in Spanish by author and Nobel Prize winner Gabriel García Marquez on the second blank page. There is no conventional plot, only chronologically scrambled episodes that take the protagonist General from a deformed, charismatic stud into a mindless blood beast, imprisoned on the throne of illusions his very power creates, coming to think of himself as a God and even naming his son Emanuel. The book is a supreme polemic, a spiritual expose of an attack against any society that encourages or even permits the growth of such a monstrosity. SIGNED copies of this title are quite RARE.
