ISBN: 978311007499

         Original Photographs of Mike Oldfield

1976. Fine. Five photographs of progressive rock and avant-garde composer Mike Oldfield taken by London Sunday Times photography Sally Soames, along with manuscript copies of several articles written by her Sunday Times colleague, music critic Derek Jewell. Fine. The photographs, which measure 8" x 10", capture a young Oldfield with guitar in hand sitting in his studio, outside in his yard, and with his dog. Each is stamped on the back by Soames and additionally signed in ink by Jewell. The photographs were likely taken for a story in the Sunday Times and later included in the hard-to-find 1983 songbook, Mike Oldfield: 10: 1973-1983, for which Jewell provided the biography. In a letter sent to a representative at Virgin Music in 1983 (included here as a holograph draft and typed carbon), Jewell references the photographs: "I found some treasured photographs of Mike taken in 1976 by Sally Soames. I offer them to you for use in the book should you need anything more - but you must return them, since they're an important part of my collection." Accompanying them is Jewell's manuscript copy of the songbook biography, two pieces about Oldfield and progressive music published in the book The History of Rock, and assorted correspondence and press releases. From the person files of Jewell.

The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights

first edition. This is a group of three carbon typescripts, all with holographic corrections by Steinbeck, and one carbon manuscript that comprise three chapters of what Farrar, Straus & Giroux published as The Acts of King Arthur and His Nobel Knights in 1976, eight years after the death of Steinbeck and 17 years after the 1959 date these chapters were written, the chapters are The Knight With The Two Swords,Gawain, Ewain, and Marhalt, and The Noble Tale of Sir Lancelot of the Lake, this typescript and manuscript material totals 348 leafs, on typing paper and sheets of lined legal-sized yellow notepaper, housed within a green marbled custom folding box with leather spine with author's name and title in gilt are the carbon manuscript of The Noble Tale of Sir Lancelot of the Lake, 81 leafs numbered 19-100, followed by 168 leafs of carbon typescript for this chapter, with notes in Steinbeck's hand, together with a blue marbled custom folding box with leather spine with author and title in gilt that houses the carbon typescript for The Knight With The Two Swords, dated May 16, 1959, being 22 leafs, with many penciled corrections, deletions, and revisions by Steinbeck, followed by Gawain, Ewain and Marhalt, noted in pencil as Section 5 and dated July 1959, being 72 leafs, also with many ink corrections, deletions, and revisions in Steinbeck's hand, Steinbeck's fascination with King Arthur began when his Aunt Mollie gave him a copy of The Boy's King Arthur when he was eight years old, that book began a life-long affair with the written word and to his continued study of King Arthur, he eventually tried to "translate" Arthur into modern English which Farrar, Straus & Giroux eventually published after his death, in his own introduction for that book Steinbeck wrote, "I remember that words -- written or printed -- were devils, and books, because they gave me pain, were my enemies....And then, one day, an aunt gave me a book and fatuously ignored my resentment. I stared at the black print with hatred, and then, gradually, the pages opened and let me in. The magic happened....I think my sense of right and wrong, my feelings of noblesse oblige, and any thought I may have against the oppressor and for the oppressed came from this secret book".       (Cherry Valley): Cherry Valley Editions. (1976). The publisher's "silver print" or "blue proof" of this book dedicated to Burroughs' parents. Inscribed by Burroughs in 1984. Together with an undated autograph letter signed from the publisher, Pam [Plymell] offering the recipient manuscript material for the book (not here present) in exchange for money to alleviate financial difficulties. Also together with the softcover edition of the published book, which is fine in wrappers. The proof has some sunning to the rear cover and a 5-digit number written in ink on the front cover; near fine.          A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT. Signed and inscribed, and with a handwritten letter signed by Norman Maclean.

University of Chicago Press, Chicago 1976 - xiv, 217 pages of text. Hardcover binding in excellent condition except for numerous tiny spots of staining to the bottom of the closed page edges. The unclipped dustjacket is sunned and creased on the spine with a small stain on the spine, and a few small tears and creases, and rubbed with loss to the top of the spine; protected in archival mylar. The ISBN in the book and printed on the dustjacket differ. Signed and inscribed on the front endpaper "March 12, 1976 To Dorothy [Sutherland], Who is busy selling every Scot in the country a copy. I've bought 20 myself - and paid for them. With love, [signed] Norman." First printing with error on page 27 "adways" for "always." Pages 185 to 190 with a few tiny spots of staining to the top margin. The text is otherwise clean and unmarked. Includes a 4 page letter handwritten and signed by Norman Maclean, on his stationery. It is again addressed to Dorothy [Sutherland] who worked as the publicity manager of the University of Chicago Press and dated in the year of publication of the book. He writes about doing research on a "tragic forest fire of 1949" and created a work which was posthumously released in 1992 as "Young Men and Fire." He also writes that "Paramount has written 2 interesting letters.to put the title story into film." He gives his opinion about the Newsweek review of his book, and inquires about the possibility "we could whip up any interest this autumn in the book as a Christmas gift?" Signed "Norman." Letters by Maclean are infrequently offered on the market. Size: Octavo (8vo) [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT AND OTHER STORIES

The University of Chicago Press (1976), Chicago - 8vo. Blue cloth in original pictorial dust jacket. Near fine in like DJ. Very light toning to spine and touches of edgewear to jacket. Ownership signature to FFEP. On the third page of the acknowledgements, a single name underlined in pen ("Dr. Jarl Dyrud") and rewritten at the top of the page. A few small spots of mild discoloration to front panel, appear to be production error, but unobtrusive. DJ unclipped. Clean and sharp overall. 271pp. "Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs. I am haunted by waters." True first edition of this modern classic ("adways" for "always," mismatched ISBNs). A surprise hit for this university press, McLean's quiet novel was published in no small part as a favor to retiring professor, but went on to become a sensation through steady word-of-mouth. Basis for the Robert Redford film starring Brad Pitt, Tom Skerritt, Craig Sheffer, and Emily Lloyd. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
