THE AMERICANS . INTRODUCTION BY JACK KEROUAC.

[Millerton, NY]: An Aperture Monograph, [1978]. - Oblong quarto. Cloth. Photographs. A few smudges to free endsheet, otherwise a very good copy, in good, somewhat smudged and handsoiled dust jacket. Third US edition. An excellent association copy, inscribed by poet/photographer Allen Ginsberg: "A late Birthday Present - July 8, 1985 on 57th St. for Lucien Carr from Allen Ginsberg." Ginsberg met Carr at Columbia University in 1943, and through Carr met Jack Kerouac, Neal Cassady and William Burroughs. In the NYT Obituary for Carr (30 January 2005), Ginsberg's earlier comment about Carr's role in the circle of friendships that gave birth to the literary arm of the Beat generation was quoted: "Lou was the glue." Carr went to work for United Press International in 1946 and was promoted to night news editor in 1956, coincident with the preparations for press of the first public edition of HOWL. Carr was included, with Kerouac, Burroughs and Cassady, in the printed dedication, and when he received his copy, wrote Ginsberg expressing "one small gripe" about his inclusion there, and requesting, out of deference to his privacy, that Ginsberg avoid such mention in future books. At Ginsberg's expense, Carr's name was deleted from the dedication page of the second impression (then already printed), and from subsequent printings. Nonetheless, in 1982, Ginsberg dedicated PLUTONIAN ODE to Carr, ". for friendship all these years."

         DEVIL'S TAIL

      - McPHAIL,DAVID. THE DEVIL'S TAIL by Nanine Valen. Offered here are two of the illustrator's dummies for this book published in 1978 by Scribner. The story itself is a strange tale based upon an old French legend about three children who bring a frozen man into their home to thaw out. Each dummy measures 7 x 8 1/2", some margin soil and stains, really VG+. Both have the text typewritten and pasted in with many corrections and changes in one of the dummies. Each also has a profusion of full and partial page pen and ink drawings by McPhail and the illustrations for both dummies are decidedly different. One is clearly earlier with less detail but more pages (61). On the cover of the other McPhail has inscribed "Best Wishes from David McPhail" with an illustration and title of The Devil's Tale under which he wrote (Bastard title). This mock-up has 55 pages. You don't often get to see more than one dummy for the same book. These allow you to really appreciate the process. McPhail was born in Newburyport, Mass. He has illustrated the work of others, notably Nancy Willard's Sailing To Cythera which was one of AIGA's 50 Books of the Year in 1974, and he has authored and illustrated a profusion of books on his own. His Captain Toad and the Motorbike was likewise included in AIGA's 1979 show of 50 Best Books. McPhail belongs to the new breed of children's book illustrators, along with James Marshall, Trina Schart Hyman and others - who bring a fresh originality to children's literature. McPhail's style ranges broadly from intricate detail reminiscent of Sendak's and E.H. Shepard's line illustrations to the broad strokes of William Steig. See Hornbook Illustrators of Children's Books vol. 4 p. 4-5, 143.

Rowse with profound respect and best wishes from Richard Nixon 1-25-79'. Tipped in a 9 page undated note in a very shaky hand from Donald Cameron Watt, former Emeritus Professor at the London School of Economics, explaining howa signed copy of Nixon's memoirs came to be in the Library at LSE, reminiscing about a former student from the USA, Frank Gannon(who became one of Nixon's aides), and mentioning that John F.
