Winston S. Churchill, The Official Biography, Companion Volume IV, Complete in 3 Volumes, January 1917 - November 1922

Heinemann 1977 - A lovely, fresh, unused set in as-new, unfaded dust jackets of the British 1st edition. The red cloth bindings are clean and unworn with sharp, unbumped edges and corners. Volume 1 shows the faint dark vertical markings which are commonly seen in this edition, but Volumes 2 and 3 are a gorgeous solid red. The red page tops retain strong, unfaded colour. Inside the contents are pristine, with no ownership inscriptions or any other markings of any kind. The dust jackets are immaculate and unclipped (£27.00 the set, rising to £36.00 after Jan 31st 1978) and show no edgewear or wrinkling. However, what makes this set very special is that it has completely avoided the spine fading which seems endemic to this edition. The spine lettering on these volumes, both red and green, is absolutely vibrant. True collector and true gift quality. In twenty years of seeking and acquiring Churchill books this is far and away the best set I have ever seen. This is a heavy set and may incur additional shipping costs. Unpaginated, with 59 duotone plates, beautifully printed from separations made by George Waters Photolithography, San Francisco. Also included with the book is a copy of the planned introduction by Robert Heinecken (used with permission), which was subsequently not included in the book (as printed in the May-June 1977 issue of Afterimage). 9-1/4 x 10 inches.[Cited in Andrew Roth, ed., The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century. (New York: PPP Editions in association with Roth Horowitz LLC, 2001), in Andrew Roth, ed., The Open Book. (Göteborg, Sweden: Hasselblad Center in association with Steidl Verlag, Göttingen, Germany, 2004), and in Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, The Photobook: A History, Volume II. (London and New York: Phaidon, 2006).] Out of print. An extremely scarce Mint signed copy of one of the most important books in the history of photography. As New (from Mike Mandel's archive). Before 1977, artists using photography usually made 'fine art photographs.' Museums and galleries, curators and collectors, increasingly embraced photography as an important medium. The contemporary art world was widening and refining its notions of 'art photography.' While practices and movements within the photographic arts were rapidly expanding and crossing into other media during the 60s and 70s, the constant at this time was that the 'art photograph' (or work of art that incorporated photography) was made by an artist. Many important artists at the time, such as Robert Heinecken, used images from the mass media and other sources as key elements in their cutting-edge works. And, artists such as Ed Ruscha were using photographs in a way that minimized the importance of the individual images (i.e., the photographic images were in service to the larger conceptual work). Then, Mike Mandel and Larry Sultan collaborated to publish 'Evidence,' and changed everything! With a brilliant sensibility for the absurd and a keen awareness of the complexity that the single image possesses when viewed outside its original context, Mandel and Sultan selected photographs from thousands of images that previously existed solely within the boundaries of the industrial, scientific, governmental and other institutional sources from which they were mined. Some of the photographs are hilarious, others are perplexing, but it's in their isolation from their original context that these images take on meanings that address the confluence of industry and corporate mischief, ingenuity and pseudo-science. The resulting book, 'Evidence,' strongly influenced our shifting awareness of 'the photograph' and introduced the importance of the 'found image' in art. The finished and provocative collection forever altered how we view images.Of course, we are now much more aware of multiple meanings images can evoke when viewed outside of a proscribed context. Before 'Evidence,' however, this was not. well, as evident. This book, unlike collections of "snapshot" photographs, forced the viewer to imagine that the larger world was using the camera to document dubious practices and alarming, amusing, and confusing experiments in the name of government. The 'photograph as art' question took on an entirely new perspective, and the world could never [seriously] look back. If borrowed from corporate-speak, a caption for 'Evidence' might be 'a paradigm shift' for photography.         The View from Serendip

New York: Random House. 1977. First. First edition. Fine in fine dustwrapper with slight toning to the edges of the flaps. Inscribed by Arthur C. Clarke to his protege, one-time secretary, and longtime friend Ian Macauley; "To Ian, this souvenir of a quarter century! All the best, Arthur. NYC 11 Oct. 77." Macauley, an award-winning New York Times journalist, was the dedicatee of Clarke's first published hardcover novel, Islands in the Sky (1952). He also edited Clarke's book of collected essays, Greetings, Carbon-Based Bipeds! (2000). Clarke wrote the last chapter of Childhood End, while visiting Macauley in Atlanta, where he was reportedly greatly influenced by their discussions. A nice association copy of this miscellany, including speculations on space, science and the sea, a short science-fiction story, and "an equatorial autobiography." Macauley has made several pencil and pen alterations in the text, apparently while preparing the essays for the collected volume. .

The Chester Play of the Deluge

London: Clover Hill Editions, 1977. Quarto. 20pp. One of only seven copies printed on vellum by Will Carter at the Rampant Lions Press, and with a separate portfolio containing three sets of the wood-engravings on vellum, hand-made paper, and japon. Illustrated with ten wood engravings by David Jones, this is considered by many to be the artist's most important work. At the early stages of his career Jones was much influenced by the work of Eric Gill, with whom he shared a close association. According to Hodnett in Five Centuries of Book Illustration, it was with The Chester Play of the Deluge, first published by the Golden Cockerel Press in 1927, that Jones reached his full artistic maturity. Its ten wood engravings "are as original a series of illustrations as any in an English book," Hodnett observes. "Jones's innovation was to integrate the elements of each design in a complex overall pattern by means of interlocking bands of solid black or white." In respect to the Golden Cockerel edition, however, Jones felt that the some of the delicacy of his wood engravings had been lost, as the paper was not properly dampened by the Press as they hurried to meet a deadline. According to the Publisher's Note by Douglas Cleverdon, Jones acquired the ten blocks in order to ensure that they would not be reprinted without his approval. In 1977, Jones gave Clover Hill Editions his blessing to reprint the book using his original blocks, in the manner that he originally intended. In this present, ultra-deluxe edition, printed on vellum, the illustrations have a beautiful clarity and heightened, minute detail. Bound in crimson morocco by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, with the portfolio in morocco-backed marbled paper. The book and portfolio are housed together in a slipcase. Extremely fine. With the original prospectus, which includes a bifolium printed vellum sheet and the illustration of Noah's Ark.
