        Couples: A Short Story

Cambridge: Halty Ferguson. 1976. Of a total edition of 276 copies, this is copy number 16 of 250 numbered copies signed by the author. Fine in wrappers. This copy is also inscribed by Updike -- he has personalized the signature on the colophon in a different color ink -- and it includes a brief signed note by Updike on the prospectus, with a hand-addressed mailing envelope. By all appearances, Updike informed the collector of the existence of this edition by sending him a prospectus with a note saying "I thought you should be aware of this" and then the collector ordered the book and Updike personalized the signature for him. A mini-footnote to the relatively early years of Updike's being a highly collected author with numerous signed limited editions to his credit, with a glimpse of Updike's active involvement in helping a collector build his collection. First Edition. Softcover. Fine.

Signed Photograph of the Original Poster of Martin Scorcese's "Taxi Driver"

Single sheet. Near Fine. A wonderful collection of autographs relating to Martin Scorcese's seminal 1976 film "Taxi Driver". On a crisp photograph of the film's original poster are the clean, unsmudged signatures of Martin Scorcese, Harvey Keitel, Jodie Foster, Albert Brooks, Peter Boyle, Cybill Shepherd, Vincent Argo and the screenwriter Paul Schrader. A galaxy of signatures, all gotten over the years by one very persistent autograph collector. The photograph itself measures 8"x10 1/2" and, like the signatures, is clean and very presentable.

        Lizard Music

New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1976. First printing. 157 pp., 8vo. Cloth in illustrated dust-jacket. Very faint foxing to endsheets and light shelfwear, otherwise very good in a bright, unclipped jacket with light edgewear and a couple of small closed tears. An early book by the prolific and irrepressible Pinkwater, considered by some to be his best. Copies of the first printing in anything like decent condition are extremely scarce; this copy is close to fine, and humorously inscribed on the halftitle by the author.

        James Wild

London: W.R. Royle and Son Ltd, 1976. unbound. Botanical. Color lithograph. Page measures 23" x 20" The James Wild is a tall and strong tulip with deep peach petals. Depicting the flower as slightly opened and leaning towards the viewer, this color lithograph showcases the lavish colors of the flower as well as McEwen's luminous attention to the intricacies of each petal. Rory McEwen (1932 - 1982) was an artist and musician born in Scotland. He studied at Eton and Trinity College in Cambridge and later settled in London. He began painting flowers when he was eight. He went on to become a musician and performer and a regular on the BBC's 'Tonight' eventually hosting 'Hallabaloo', a folk, blues and alternative music show. From 1964, McEwen shifted focus on his visual art career, developing his distinctive style. His work has been exhibited internationally and is in several museum collections, including the Tate in London. These wonderful Old English Tulip lithographs are rendered with scientific detail combined with a contemporary lightness and flair.

Krivatsy 9564; G. Sonnedecker, Kremers and Urdang's History of Pharmacy (1976) p. 424. First edition of a comprehensive and influential medical work, written by the Parisian physician Jean de Renou (1568-1620). "Of particular influence on the practice of French pharmacy were the writings of Jean de Renou (1608), providing a formulary, a textbook, and a guide to the preservation of drugs, the use of pharmaceutical equipment and to the rules of professional ethics" (Sonnedecker). The work is divided into two parts, each with an individual engraved title-page. The first part starts with some general chapters on the principles of pharmacy and what a proper apothecary is like. Following are several chapters on different types of medicines, their characteristics, how to compound them and when to prescribe them. Three large chapters cover the different ingredients and their medicinal powers, distinguishing between plants, minerals, and parts of animals. Whereas the first part is more introductory and informative, the second part is more like a pharmacopoeia. Given are many recipes for medicines, with comments on the diseases or ailments they're supposed to cure. With an owner's inscription on the back of the title-page. Somewhat browned throughout, with some marginal water stains, minor thumbing, a few small spots, and a few marginal annotations in ink. Binding restored and rebacked, as noted above, hinges slightly cracked.

[Attributes: First Edition]
