Correspondance manuscrite complète d'Henry Miller avec Béatrice Commengé EDITION ORIGINALE ENVOI AUTOGRAPHE

Pacific Palisades |(CA): S.n, 1976. Fine. S.n, Pacific Palisades (CA) 1976-1978, 23 pages A4. - Autograph manuscript signed, written with black markers, red, green, purple and blue printed on recovered paper, with many additions, corrections and deletions. 241 pages, including 238 foliated and 3 unnumbered, variable formats, mainly 4to and 8vo, single-sided sometimes with annotations or collages on the back, under cover salmon with title and autograph to the editor Alex Grall and black shirt with autograph title tag signed a second time contreplat. Perforated sheets with eyelets. Complete manuscript of the first version of Baroque Love, written between December 18, 1969 and June 16, 1970, and published in April 1971 at René Julliard. The book, first in a sentimental trilogy that will continue Are there a doctor in the house? and L'Angevine, is as a diary. Its main theme, love, is one of the author's favorite subjects. The narrator, who tells her passionate affair with a woman mourns the death of his daughter, plays with the codes of the novel, in a truculent and sharp tongue. Need I remind you that the works of René Fallet, marked by Rabelais, Molière or Marcel Ayme, inspired by their ornate style, the movie Michel Audiard, René Clair and Jean Girault? This manuscript, offered by René Fallet to the editor Alex Grall, can not be considered as a simple script. This is much more of a plastic creation that mixes visual games, word games, collages and sketches (flowers, naked women, grotesque heads), composed in color on a multitude of recovered paper. Indeed, Fallet has collected many sheets of letterhead (ORTF or Belgian Radio and Television, French Communist Party, Editions Denoël or Gallimard, Depeche TV, Cycling Mirror, The Team, First National City Bank, French Corporation Mythology Intercontinental Hotel Düsseldorf national railway Company of Belgium, and other Ministry of social Affairs) that it uses as support for his manuscript, creating a graphic and dynamic effect. He also wrote on the back of advertising leaflets (liquid dish Paic, Kleenex tissues), original press photographs (Paris-Roubaix the peloton in amateur cycling, table Wesselmann amateur nude women!), Operating photographs films (Fahrenheit 451 by François Truffaut with Julie Christie and Oskar Werner), from book covers (the Milanese killed on Saturday from Giorgio Scerbanenco, SAS Gérard de Villiers, They only think that Georges Wolinski), covers discs (Let it be Beatles), of images from erotic magazines or news drawing boards (Jean-Jacques Sempé). It enriches all of collages - "The French student reads a lot Camus" - without forgetting to install several portraits of himself, including an original photograph with Georges Brassens and a notable portrait naked! The whole forms purposely joyful picture, juicy and caustic popular culture at the turn of 1960 and 1970. For Fallet, colorful character saying "anarchist wiper trend, from left to right", takes pleasure in diverting with humor archetypes of modernity (the pin-up, the housewife, the ideal couple, sports, etc.), in a move that is reminiscent of some contemporary artistic movements ( Pop Art, New Realism). The manuscript presents important variants with the completed text. From a structural point of view, firstly, Fallet having changed the cutting of his hundred six chapters, which are then organized into three parts in the published version. From a narrative point of view, on the other hand, since the author plays with the first names of his characters, each of which is named in several ways: for example, the husband of the heroine sometimes named Jean-Louis, Jean-Claude manuscript become thereafter. Moreover, Fallet reserved its margins in order to register his corrections but also to number the lines and especially to indicate the date of writing of each passage: so we can follow every day from 18 December 1969 to 16 June 1970 advanced masterly of his writing. The last leaf, not folioté, consists of a list of excerpts reviewed. Finally, the manuscript reveals that the inspiration for this story of passionate love is none other than Mette Ivers, illustrator and work with which Fallet also Sempé wife, whose name comes up very often in the back of the pages or in the margins . Superb manuscript remarkably composed by René Fallet to create a real plastic object. One of the very few ''fanas'' to understand me. Merci ! Merci mille fois ! », écrit-il dès la seconde lettre. Une véritable amitié épistolaire se noue alors entre le vieil écrivain et la jeune muse : « I think of you as some sort of terrestrial angel » ; «  what a delight to get a letter from you » ; « Keep writing me, please ! Refusant une correspondance purement universitaire, « To be honest with you, I don't think either A.N. or I, who are naturally very truthful persons, really succeeded with truth as it is conventionally thought of. We are both confirmed «fabulators». » Miller recommande à la jeune femme ses nouvelles lectures et ses vieux amis, « [Lawrence] Durrel is the friend to talk to about me, [...] he knows me inside out » ; [he] is wonderful when you get to know him. éblouissant même » ; « that great master of the french language - Joseph Delteil » ; « Delteil is almost a saint. But a lively one. » ; « Alf[red Perlès] is the clown, the buffoon, who made me laugh every day ». Puis il la félicite d'abandonner son projet didactique au profit d'un « imaginary book about me » et engage une correspondance bien plus intime. Il lui confie ainsi ses étonnements : « Did you read about the french prostitutes protesting and demonstrating in Paris against my receving [the legion of honor] ? They say I did not treat them well in my books. And I thougth I had ! ! ». Il partage ses gouts littéraires : « I prefer the Welsh. They are the last of the poets ». Il met également en garde la future traductrice d'Anais Nin, contre la dualité de son ancienne maîtresse: « She is or was a complete enigma, absolutely dual. [...] Actually, I suppose there is always this dichotomy between the person and the writer », lui confiant ses secrets : « she is slowly dyin (of cancer) she refuses to admit it.  (This is entre nous !) » et révélant ses nouveaux amours :  « I am in love with a very beautiful chinese actress [...]. I seem to go from one to another, never totally defeated, never wholly satisfied. But this is near ''eternal'' love as I've never been. », puis dans la lettre suivante : « if you have another photo do please send it to me ». Dans les dernières lettres pourtant, le ton s'assombrit avec la santé déclinante de l'écrivain et celle du 25 janvier 1978 est un superbe mais terrible témoignage d'un artiste devenu trop faible pour son art, portant un regard acerbe sur sa condition comme sur celle de l'humanité : « Some days, I bang out a few memorable lines or have great ideas (never realized) for future books » ; « c'est la grand foutaise, if that's the right word » ; « we are about to relive the last day's of Rome. There is no hope - only to rejoice in the end. It needs another order of mankind or replace Homo Sapiens. [] I prefer the life and culture of the Pygmies...

The Aleppo Codex: provided with massoretic notes and pointed by Aaron ben Asher. The codex considered authoritative by Maimonides. Part One, Plates

Jerusalem: At The Magnes Press, The Hebrew University, 1976. Limited First edition. Hardcover. vg. 1/500. Folio (17 1/4 x 13"). [8]pp (Booklet), [4]pp (Title page in English), 596pp (Plates), [4]pp (Title page in Hebrew). Contemporary 3/4 red calf over morocco, with gilt-lettered leather title label laid on spine. Raised bands. Original publisher's booklet (in English and Hebrew) tipped in. "The Aleppo Codex is the most important surviving manuscript of the Bible that includes vocalization (nikud), accents (te'amim), and the Masorah (the traditional annotation to the biblical text). As its name signifies, it is a bound volume of vellum leaves with writing on both sides. The importance of this manuscript, probably written in Tiberias more than a thousand years ago, lies first and foremost in the fact that it is the oldest existing manuscript Bible and also the most exact. It was written by the scribe Shlomo Ben Buya'a, while the vocalization and accents were added by the greatest of masoretes, Aharon Ben Asher. The Codex was apparently brought from Jerusalem to Cairo, where it was consulted by Maimonides when he compiled the halakhic rules governing the writing of a Bible, and he also referred to it when he was manually copying a Torah scroll. In the late fourteenth century the Codex was transferred from Jerusalem to Aleppo, which local Jewish tradition claims to be the Aram Soba mentioned in the Bible. For centuries it was kept in an iron strongbox opened by two keys, held by two trustees. The box was kept in the ancient synagogue, in the "Cave of Elijah" on a large stone pedestal, under a veil of sanctity and mystery. For instance, anyone obliged by the community's court to take an oath had to swear on the Codex. Aleppo's Jews believed that their community was blessed in consequence of the presence of the Codex, and that once it would be removed, disaster would befall their community. For this reason (with a very few exceptions), the rabbis of Aleppo prevented scholars from examining the Codex. Following the UN resolution of November 29, 1947 calling for the establishment of a Jewish state in part of Palestine, rioting broke out in Aleppo during which Arab rioters caused damage to the Jewish quarter, especially to its synagogues. The Codex suffered damage, and part of it disappeared. Of the original 487 leaves, only 294 remained. Members of the community concealed the surviving sections in various places for about ten years. In 1957 they were smuggled out of Aleppo to Turkey. Thanks to the efforts of Izhak Ben-Zvi, second President of the State of Israel, the Codex was brought to Jerusalem and deposited in the Ben-Zvi Institute on January 23, 1958. Since then it has been the subject of much research and great efforts have been made to bring it to public attention. Several critical editions of the Bible have been published on the basis of the Aleppo Codex.       Boston: Gregg Press, 1976.. Octavo, cloth. First U.S. hardcover edition, first printing. 362 copies printed. Presentation copy with signed inscription by Disch to a coeditor of "The Gregg Press Science Fiction" series on front free endpaper. Text offset from that of the 1974 Avon edition. New introduction by M. John Harrison. "Six interweaving tales set in twenty-first century New York, a scene of high unemployment and heartless 'welfareism.' The book deals convincingly (and unusually) with the marginalized members of a future society. The result is moving and at times harrowing: a masterpiece." - Pringle, The Ultimate Guide to Science Fiction, second edition, p. 372, "A brilliant work, utterly convincing in its portraits of people trying to get by in a world they are powerless to influence or control. The most eloquent display of the pessimism that became newly acceptable in New Wave SF." - Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-346. 1974 Nebula nominee. Pringle, Science Fiction: The 100 Best Novels 66. Sargent, British and American Utopian Literature, 1516-1985, p. 338. Survey of Science Fiction Literature V, pp. 2774-77. A fine copy without dust jacket as issued. A wonderful association copy. [China Pictorial 1976 No.11 and Original Mock-up].

[China Pictorial].. 1976.. Rare mock-up of China Pictorial, No. 11, 1976 issued to commemorate the death of Chairman Mao Zedong on September 9th. 33 folded sheets of light card, measuring 36 x 52cm open and 36 x 26cm closed, comprise a complete draft of the 61 pages of the final magazine with some interesting, and on occasion, telling differences. The reverse of the sheets are largely blank with handwritten page numbers on upper corner. Colour mock-up of upper cover on light card, plain backstrip torn with a little loss, lower cover not present. As this mock-up was compiled in the days prior to the use of computers it includes 149 black and white photographs, rather than photographic reproductions, of varying sizes showing Mao, many high ranking officials and, naturally, scenes of Mao with the Chinese people both en masse and in more intimate settings. These photographs have been very carefully placed amongst blocks of Chinese text. The text blocks have each been painstakingly hand cut by knife to make sure the sharp right angles required for printing were achieved and then laid down along pencilled guidelines. The mock-up of this special issue of China Pictorial is accompanied by a very good copy of the published magazine. A related item loosely inserted with this collection is a contemporary photograph of instructions passed between three people, two of whom are identifiable as high ranking Chinese officials of the day, regarding an issue of China Pictorial issued the following year (No.7 1977). This mock-up offers an extraordinary behind-the-scenes insight into the political manoeuvrings, subtle and not so subtle, that were taking place at the highest level of Chinese government in the period immediately following Chairman Mao's death. The least subtle change is that of the exclusion of Mao's wife in the final publication. One photograph (page 34 in the mock-up) shows Mao leading the way to the Northern Shaanxi battlefield in 1947. A handwritten comment alongside this photo reads "remove the image of Jiang Qing." Jiang Qing, Mao's wife and the leader of the Gang of Four does not appear in the revised photo in the final published edition and she is not seen in any of the other images in the magazine either. Many of the changes were more subtle, for example, several critical comments relating to Deng Xiaoping, present in the mock-up, were removed before publication, while the criticisms of Lin Biao are kept. An example perhaps of someone reading the political winds and sensing that Deng's fortunes were again beginning to change? It is also telling to look at the significance of the order in which the names of party members are mentioned. An interesting example of this can be found on page 8 of the mock-up. On this page Soong Ching-ling, or Madame Sun Yat-sen, is listed with a number of other senior officials' names. However her name has been circled with an indication that her name be moved from third place further down to the middle of the group of names. This change of order is reflected in the final publication but on page 10 she appears still in third place which surely must be human error! On pages 12 - 13 the editors have had prepared three different drafts for approval and have written "Plan No.1, Plan No.2 and Plan No.3" respectively on the rear side of the leaves in pencil. The text is not altered between the mock-up and the published magazine, however the photographs, with the exception of one differ. On the first plan individual photographs of the leaders are laid down side by side with the names captioned underneath each image. These 16 photographs look strikingly similar to "mug shots" taken by police of criminals and it is therefore not surprising that these photographs do not appear in the final publication. Another photograph shows Hua Guofeng delivering a eulogy for Mao. In one copy of this photograph Ye Jianying is behind him and in another the physical evidence of his removal is visible. Ye Jianying appears in the image in the final publication. Comparing the mock-up of 人民畫報1976年11期及珍貴手稿 [China Pictorial Number 11, 1976] and the final publication as a whole it is interesting to note that the propaganda slogans in the background of some photos in the mock-up are not as clear as they later appear in the published version. It is this, together with the not inconsiderable number of changes between the mock-up and the final published magazine, that draw attention to just how important it was to get this landmark issue "right", to reflect the prevailing winds and to make sure the party message was brought firmly home to the reader. .
