        The Winchester Malory: A Facsimile,

Early English Tract Society, London 1976 - Large, thick 4to. First edition. Gilt-lettered cloth boards. Facsimile of the 473-leaf manuscript. Cloth lightly rubbed, else this is a fine copy. Except for the introduction by Ker, the book is comprised entirely of photographs of the celebrated manuscript. The introduction discusses not only the paper and writing, but also the history of the manuscript, 'discovered' in 1934. It was known for at least 100 years prior to that date as a copy of the Morte d'Arthur, but dismissed as a defective copy of the text used by Caxton. In 1934 it was shown that the Winchester manuscript is a separate text from Caxton's, differing in many details. This full photographic reproduction is in black and white, but two plates are printed in red as well, to show the unusual scribal technique of using red ink for certain names and phrases. Uncommon in the first edition. Gaines A25 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        William Eggleston's Guide

Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1976, Hardcover (Full Leather), Book Condition: Very Good Condition, Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket, First EditionEGGLESTON, WILLIAM. William Eggleston's Guide, New York: Museum of Modern Art, 1976. Square octavo, first edition, pp. 112, brown pebble-grain leatherette boards with gilt lettering on top and spine, mounted color photo on top. Essay by John Szarkowski. This was the catalog for Eggleston's controversial show at the Museum of Modern Art, which was panned by many critics for its use of color. Considered a breakthrough in photographic art, see Roth pp. 234-5, Parr & Badger v.1 p. 265. They wrote that this show and book 'heralded the birth of colour photography, or more accurately, it marked the moment when it was perceived as artistically respectable.' They add that Szarkowski's essay here is one of his most adroit. Condition of this book: Minor spine slant, age toning at edges. Boards near fine with a few faint areas of rubbing at extremities. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 112. Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact.         Typed Letters Signed

1976. HELLMAN, Lillian. Typed Letters Signed. Two one-page typed letters signed from Hellman, dated respectively May 7 and May 27, 1976. Hellman expresses her displeasure over a recent review of her book Scoundrel Time by Mary Geisheker in the "Baltimore Sun" on April 25, in which Hellman feels Geisheker implies she is a lesbian. In the first letter to publisher William F. Schmick Jr., Hellman expresses her displeasure: "I have never commented on the literary opinions of a reviewer, nor do I do so now. But your reviewer has gone in for a new field of literary criticism. A good deal of the piece is taken up with my photograph and what I look like. Thus I am in dress and in attitude `butch,' have an `air of sassy androgeny cultivated by Forties movies heroines,' (in itself a remarkable misstatement since they didn't cultivate any such thing), and because of these qualities I would have been in danger from `tough dikes' in jail. (In this last statement, Miss Geisheker deliberately perverts a quotation from Dashiell Hammett). It does not matter that the clear intimation that I am a Lesbian happens to be a lie. It is low down stuff. I guess maybe the lowest I ever read in a newspaper." Hellman discusses the matter further and states the reviewers' desire to prove her a Lesbian has lead to contradictions in the review. In the second letter, Hellman responds to a reply, which includes responses by Geisheker, from Book Review Editor Harold A. Williams, dated May 13 (original reply letter enclosed as is an original copy of the book review by Geisheker): "If I write again it is in the hope that you will, for the sake of others, ask Miss Geisheker to show less confidence in her opinions, which is a pleasant way of saying less than I mean." Hellman responds point-by-point to some of Geishker's responses and use of the word "butch." "It is used by female and male homosexuals to mean exactly what it has always meant; i.e. tough homosexuals. Miss Geisheker has no right to use that personal language." She also writes further about the Hammett quote being taken out of context. In all four items. Upper left corner of the second Hellman letter torn away but with no lose of text. $850.00.

        Spring/Summer 1976 Plate 73

Paris: Christian Dior, 1976. Ink, watercolor and gouache on xerograph. Fabric swatches attached with staples. Sheet measures 12 1/2" x 8 7/8". This original croquis from the designer Christian Dior features a dress from the Spring/Summer 1976 collection, when the house was under designer Marc Bohan. This croquis was made from a xerograph of an original drawing, which was then hand-colored with ink, watercolor, and gouache. The design shows a long, elegant, pale green dress with a finely pleated skirt. Swatches of the appropriate fabric, one flat and one pleated, are stapled to the sheet. These sketches were produced in a limited quantity and presented to potential clients in attendance at the Paris Couture shows held by Dior in the spring and fall of each year. This example is in good condition and makes a wonderful document for any lover of fashion.

Ehemaliges Bibliotheksexemplar. Vortitelblatt gestempelt.
