The Exhaustive Treatise of Shadows (TWO VOLUMES).

University of Aleppo, Aleppo 1976 - Volume I: Translation: [1]. xv, 281 pp. 64 figures in text / Volume II: Commentary: [1]. xvii, 222 pp. +[3], numerous figures in text, biblio. index, translated & introduced by E. S. Kennedy, cover slightly soiled, otherwise set in good condition. These two companion volumes present, respectively, a translation of the arabic text and commentary upon a work of the celebrated scientist of eleventh century Central Asia. The original, as its name indicates, is an extensive discussion of shadows, their nature, properties, and utilities, the author ranging about through the fields of optics, etymology, literature, religion, mathematics, and astronomy, as the main topic leads him. It is as a primary source for the history of the ancient and medieval exact sciences that Biruni's Shadows is significant. The precursors of the tangent function he describes, particulary the primitive shadow tables for telling time, cintribute to our knowledge of the prehistory of trigonometry. The Father Christmas Letters & BONUS ITEM: JRR Tolkiens Last Will & Testament

George, Allen & Unwin, London 1976 - The Father Christmas Letters is a collection of letters written and illustrated by J. R. R. Tolkien between 1920 and 1942 for his children, from "Father Christmas". They tell of the adventures and misadventures of Father Christmas and his helpers, including the North Polar Bear and his two sidekick cubs, Paksu and Valkotukka. - J.R.R. Tolkien was best known for his epic fantasy "Lord of the Rings" and his studies in myth and language. But Tolkien was also the proud dad of four kids - and he didn't just read "Hobbit" to them at bedtime. Over the course of many years, he wrote and illustrated detailed, whimsical letters from Father Christmas, populated with a clumsy polar bear, elves and goblins. In these letters, Father Christmas kept the Tolkien children updated with stories about the hijinks at the North Pole - the slapsticky North Polar Bear and all the things he broke, firework explosions, the discovery of ancient caves full of old cave drawings, and battles with the goblins. (When Father Christmas couldn't write, his Elvish secretary filled in) - Tolkien's old-school style of writing is a bit formal and very correct, but he tosses in comments of exasperation, amusement, and in the last letter, a sort of sad resignation that children will grow up. Maybe it is because they were given to real children, not intended for publication, that the letters are only a little cutesy, and never cloying. And of course, Tolkien's detailed, colorful, fantastical, intricate pictures are what make the letters come alive; you can imagine the Tolkien kids eagerly examining the pictures as well as the written words. They aren't terribly realistic - Father Christmas never looks quite real - but their detailed fantastical charm makes up for it, such as the murals on Father Christmas's walls, with suns, moons, stars and trees. Tolkien also sprinkles the stories with things that his kids were probably intrigued by, like prehistoric cave paintings, fireworks, and a comic bear who causes all kinds of mayhem. And fans of Tolkien's fantasy works will probably enjoy checking out things like the invented Elf language (as written by the secretary Ilbereth) and goblin language. Tolkien includes a letter from the North Polar Bear in the latter language. "Letters From Father Christmas" won't exactly make you believe in Santa Claus again, but it is one of the prettiest and most charming Christmas picture books out there. Definitely recommended - and not just for Tolkien fans too. Light foxing throughout, otherwise a very good overall condition. - PLUS A BONUS ITEM: Photocopy of J.R.R. Tolkiens Last Will & Testament [he was worth a small fortune!], which consists of 6 pages and it bears the signature of Tolkien several times. - POSTAGE OPTIONS: Our orders are shipped within 1 or 2 business days. - Thanks for your interest and I hope you like the book enough to buy it. - Regards from Arabella.         Bolan's Original Design Notes for the 1976 T-Rex Album, "Futuristic Dragon"

1976 - A small archive of handwritten notations and drawings by Marc Bolan regarding his design wishes for the 1976 T. Rex album, *Futuristic Dragon*. Three 5" x 8" sheets (one lined) with drawing and notations. Creases and some wear, very good or better, along with a near fine copy of the album with one corner bumped. The archive includes a primitive sketch of the cover design mirroring very closely the polished finished artwork by designer George Underwood, and ideas regarding "graffiks" (accompanied by a drawing): "Marc astride a silver dragon, like in arbian [sic] knights + oval like a Marvel comic logo" and "get a Jones in your bones / a Skellinton with an afro." Lastly, Boland has written out the band credits, production credits, and thank yous. At the end of the final leaf, Bolan has added a gift Inscription with a small drawing of a face: "to george with love." *Futuristic Dragon* was something of a comeback for Bolan, who was at the time briefly on the mend from cocaine addiction and weight gain. The album was driven by the success of two singles that preceded it, "New York City" and "Dreamy Lady." The record is notable for its dense Phil Spector-esque production style, and is today considered one the band's most underrate effort. From the personal archives of album designer George Underwood. A unique T-Rex artifact created by Bolan's own hand.

        1976 Star Trek Convention Photographs

1976. A collection of more than 150 amateur photographs from the 1976 Oakland, California Star Trek Convention featuring the cast of the original show and various attendees. Overall fine with only a bit of fading to some of the color images but most are fresh and new. The photographs feature William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForrest Kelley, Nichelle Nichols, George Takai, Walter Koenig, James Doohan, as well other actors from the series decked out in their 1970s best, speaking on stage or signing autographs. Just over 20 of the photos depict convention-goers hanging out, traveling to the show, dressed in Star Trek costumes, posing with actors, and mugging for the camera. The convention snaps are accompanied by another 400 amateur (and a few professional) photographs of television broadcasts of the show and various Star Trek stars' on-air appearances ($25,000 Pyramid, Hollywood Squares). In the days before VCRs, taking photographs of the TV was one of the only ways to capture images from a show. Most of the images appear fuzzy but still retain a crude charm, particularly images of the little-seen 1975 TV special, The Star Trek Dream.A wonderful group of photographs that capture Star Trek at the height of its cult status in the years after its cancellation but before the first Star Wars and Star Trek movies brought science fiction into the mainstream. .
