        Born Again

Old Tappan, New Jersey: Chosen Books. (1976). First. First edition. Fine in fine dustwrapper with the slightest of edgewear. Colson's autobiographical account of his conversion from Nixon-era dirty trickster to born again Christian. Inscribed by New York Yankee second baseman Bobby Richardson (himself a born-again Christian, and reportedly a deeply religious man) to all-time Yankee great Joe DiMaggio: "Joe, Betsy & I thank you for coming to Sumter -- Our Best Wishes, Bobby Richardson."         The Missing Piece - 1st Edition/1st Printing

New York: Harper & Row, Publishers. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1976. First Edition; First Printing; Signed by Author. Hardcover. 0060256710 . An attractive copy in Near Fine condition in alike, price-clipped dustjacket with small closed tears. This copy is signed by author Shel Silverstein on the half-title page. Minor rubbing to boards; "It was missing a piece. And it was not happy." So begins this fable of quest and fulfillment with its sparse line illustrations to supplement the text. Singing nonsense rhymes it travels far and wide searching for its missing piece. Sadly, when it finds its missing piece and can roll very fast it discovers that life at a fast pace does not have time for pleasurable things like talking with friends, entertaining a butterfly, and singing a happy song. In fact, when it was complete it could not sing at all, so it set the piece down gently and slowly rolled away .

THE SIOUX SPACEMAN ( A Very Fine First Hardcover Edition) )

Robert Hale, London 1976 - A very fine, unread copy in a very fine dust jacket. Originally published as a paperback in the United States, this compact British Robert Hale edition had the usual tiny print-run of a few hundred copies, almost all earmarked for UK libraries and with no retail distribution. If you wanted a Hale hardcover, you had to visit the company's trade counter at their Clerkenwell offices. Robert Hale has published interesting books over the years, many of which are now extremely rare, including titles by Robert Bloch, Samuel R Delany, Gordon Dickson, Jack Vance and others. This is a very fine copy, pretty much AS NEW [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Hab Theory

Boston: Little, Brown. NF/NF. 1976. 1st Edition. Hardcover; 1st Printing. 0316208590 . 1st edition/1st printing. Signed and inscribed on the title page by the author: "To (names)...for our friendship, Allan W. Eckert". Lovely near fine book: straight, clean, tight, no previous owner writing in it, with just a short, very narrow and shallow indentation to the front binding cover to keep it from being fine. The dustjacket is price intact, bright, unfaded, crisp and clean, with just a couple of tiny, extremely faint 'ghosts' of spots . Very uncommon signed! This book had a tiny print run of only 3,000 copies, and is extremely rare in collector's condition and even more so signed and inscribed to a friend. This is my personal favorite "what-if" sci-fi story - it's a real thriller! The HAB theory postulates that the earth "flips" when the ice accumulates too heavily at the poles. Has it happened, and could it happen again? Draws heavily on 'Path Of The Pole' for the science in the story. Author's only sci-fi story (most of his books are about history and animals). ; Signed by Author .

        1976 Star Trek Convention Photographs

1976. A collection of more than 150 amateur photographs from the 1976 Oakland, California Star Trek Convention featuring the cast of the original show and various attendees. Overall fine with only a bit of fading to some of the color images but most are fresh and new. The photographs feature William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForrest Kelley, Nichelle Nichols, George Takai, Walter Koenig, James Doohan, as well other actors from the series decked out in their 1970s best, speaking on stage or signing autographs. Just over 20 of the photos depict convention-goers hanging out, traveling to the show, dressed in Star Trek costumes, posing with actors, and mugging for the camera. The convention snaps are accompanied by another 400 amateur (and a few professional) photographs of television broadcasts of the show and various Star Trek stars' on-air appearances ($25,000 Pyramid, Hollywood Squares). In the days before VCRs, taking photographs of the TV was one of the only ways to capture images from a show. Most of the images appear fuzzy but still retain a crude charm, particularly images of the little-seen 1975 TV special, The Star Trek Dream.A wonderful group of photographs that capture Star Trek at the height of its cult status in the years after its cancellation but before the first Star Wars and Star Trek movies brought science fiction into the mainstream.

The Secret Paris of the 30's

London: Thames and Hudson,, 1976. Translated from the French by Richard Miller. Quarto. Original black cloth, titles to spine in silver. With the dust jacket. Illustrations from photos by Brassaï. Very slight rubbing to corners, but a really excellent copy in the jacket with only the title faded at spine panel. First US edition (originally published in French by Gallimard, Paris, earlier in the same year), first impression, presentation copy inscribed on the title page by Brassai, "For Dick and Pat Shirk, bien amicalement, Brassai, New York, le 2 Oct. 1976". Richard K. Shirk (1924-1985) was photographer from Syracuse, New York, who started his photographic career in 1939 at the Grosse Pointe News, Michigan. He was attached to the Night Photo Reconnaissance Squadron of the U.S. Air Force during WWII and worked with Dr Harold Edgerton on developing the electronic flash for night photography. After the war apprenticed under Charles Kerlee, and started his own studio in Detroit specialising in architectural photography. He exhibited repeatedly in the 1970s, won awards from the Detroit Art Directors Club and the Focus '77 Show, was guest lecturer at Western Michigan University and taught classes at Wayne State University 1978-80. His photographs are collected at the Toledo Art Museum and the Detroit Institute of Art. He married Patricia Ramsay Shirk (1927-2011), and they lived in Monterey, California. After her husband's death, Patricia collected photography ranging from Julia Margaret Cameron to Aaron Siskind, which collection she bequeathed to the University of California, Santa Cruz. A pleasing association inscription to a very enjoyable book.

Circ Cric Cric Trapeze Circus Circus

Joe D'Ambrosio, Portage indiana Chicago Illinois 1976 - Trapeze. THINK CIRCUS, is a tour-de-force by master artist, bookmaker and author, the late great Joe D'Ambrosio." I hoped to bridge the gap between the Fine Arts and the Book Arts". This has been masterfully done by using a wonderful eye for color and shapes with an engineering degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology. The artist shows off his printing ability by " using two extremely different type faces which work well together because they have different design functions on the same page. He shows his ingenious feats of engineering in the manner in which he bound the book. " The threads which hold the pages in place exit through the spine of the book and become the straining ropes for the circus tent serigraphed on the front cover. The treads had to be waxed so their 90-degree angles remained rigid in the travel from spine to front cover. Otherwise the book would sag when the book was opened and the tension is removed. Trapeze has 19 fabulous serigraphs each one a work of art on it's own. Most are printed using several colors, red, blue, green, brown yellow gold leaf and others. There are also several black, white and gray prints. This book is #23 of 50 and 7 artist proofs and has been set in 18pt Centaur and 24pt P.T. Barnum ( an idea of printer Elmore Mundell), and printed on Rives BFK hand made paper by the compulsive printer, Portage Indiana. The boards are covered in tent canvas amd the paste downs are of handmade paper. The slipcase is handmade paper over board and allows the book to slip in either way. There is one unique and wonderful print at the beginning of the book dedicated to two of the authors most ardent supporters on the celebration of their wedding. The book is signed by both D'Ambrosio and printer Elmore Mundell. For the discerning collector of Fine Art and Fine Bookmaking this very special item has it all. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The Winchester Malory: A Facsimile,

Early English Tract Society, London 1976 - Large, thick 4to. First edition. Gilt-lettered cloth boards. Facsimile of the 473-leaf manuscript. Cloth lightly rubbed, else this is a fine copy. Except for the introduction by Ker, the book is comprised entirely of photographs of the celebrated manuscript. The introduction discusses not only the paper and writing, but also the history of the manuscript, 'discovered' in 1934. It was known for at least 100 years prior to that date as a copy of the Morte d'Arthur, but dismissed as a defective copy of the text used by Caxton. In 1934 it was shown that the Winchester manuscript is a separate text from Caxton's, differing in many details. This full photographic reproduction is in black and white, but two plates are printed in red as well, to show the unusual scribal technique of using red ink for certain names and phrases. Uncommon in the first edition. Gaines A25 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        William Eggleston's Guide

Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1976, Hardcover (Full Leather), Book Condition: Very Good Condition, Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket, First EditionEGGLESTON, WILLIAM. William Eggleston's Guide, New York: Museum of Modern Art, 1976. Square octavo, first edition, pp. 112, brown pebble-grain leatherette boards with gilt lettering on top and spine, mounted color photo on top. Essay by John Szarkowski. This was the catalog for Eggleston's controversial show at the Museum of Modern Art, which was panned by many critics for its use of color. Considered a breakthrough in photographic art, see Roth pp. 234-5, Parr & Badger v.1 p. 265. They wrote that this show and book 'heralded the birth of colour photography, or more accurately, it marked the moment when it was perceived as artistically respectable.' They add that Szarkowski's essay here is one of his most adroit. Condition of this book: Minor spine slant, age toning at edges. Boards near fine with a few faint areas of rubbing at extremities. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 112. Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact.
