        DISTORTIONS

In inglese. _ [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The author's own library of translations of the Morse series [191 Vols.]

      - 2015 1976 - FIRST EDITIONS and subsequent editions in some cases, various sizes and formats original cloth, boards, or wrappers, dustjackets where applicable, many with original wraparound bands or still in shrinkwrap, a good number with letters to Dexter from publisher enclosing copies laid in or notes in his hand, some with inscriptions to Dexter, all in very good to fine condition. A large group of translations of Dexter's celebrated crime novels, as comprehensive as could be imagined in terms of its coverage, demonstrating the global popularity of his Inspector Morse. Together these constitute a fascinating document of the way a series of books with a very strong sense of place - in this case, Oxford - is adopted and adapted as it reaches new territories. The collection includes first translated editions of Dexter's full list from China, Japan, and Brazil; Scandinavian countries, Estonia, Germany, France, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, and Italy; Poland, Romania, Russia and the Czech and Slovak Republics. Amongst these, European countries such as Sweden and Norway with a strong recent tradition of crime fiction are notably among the earliest - suggesting that Dexter was a model and influence for the current wave of Nordic Noir - but the very earliest examples are in fact from Japan, where Dexter has an enduring popularity. The occasional alterations to the titles of the works, and the variations in design (in some cases simply aping the design of the UK edition, in others providing a domestically-appropriate and occasionally slightly eccentric alternative interpretation), show the way in which the same raw material has been adapted to appeal to particular markets, representing an interesting cultural cross-section. In many cases, additional copies are available individually - please enquire; a full listing of the volumes contained in this collection is also available on request. Ex-Libris Colin Dexter, with Dexter/Blackwell bookplates provided.

        PADDY PORK'S HOLIDAY

GOODALL, JOHN. GOODALL,JOHN. PADDY PORK'S HOLIDAY: MANUSCRIPT. Offered here is the original book of watercolor drawings for Goodall's picture book Paddy Pork's Holiday, published in 1976 by Macmillan in London and Atheneum in New York. It is bright and in Fine condition with almost the complete story (it does not have the publisher's title and first drawing). The pen and watercolor drawings by Goodall are laid into a folder. There are thirteen two-sided drawings measuring 10 1/2 by 5 inches, each with a flap that changes the scene. There are two two-sided drawings measuring 7 by 5 inches which do not have flaps. Done with vivid colors and set in pre - industrial England, this is the story about a lovely little pig named Paddy Pork who has many misadventures when he ventures out on a holiday. When he goes for a swim, a dog steals his clothing. He sees a scarecrow in a nearby field and "borrows" its tuxedo. Because of his fancy garb when he ventures into town he is mistaken for Herr Grunt a concert pianist. He is taken on stage but just before he is meant to perform, he manages to escape and runs home, happy to be with his family again. There is no text and none is needed because the pictures with the moveable flaps, tell the story. Sold with a first edition of the book.

Designed by Bea Feitler. Amongst the immediately recognizable subjects here are Charlotte Rampling, Veruschka Lehndorff, Elsa Peretti, Loulou de la Falaise, Karl Lagerfeld, Paloma Picasso, David Hockney, Annie Duperey, June Newton, and the photographer himself. A bright, most handsome example (cited on page 93 of "From Fair to Fine 2") of the uncommon withdrawn true first hardbound American first edition entitled "Women" - rather than the more familiar "White Women" - additionally bearing the BOLDLY SIGNED PRESENTATION "For ... / Helmut Newton" in black ink across the title page.         ACTION! COMPLETE RUN! 14/2/1976 TO 12/11/77

IPC 1976 - Here is a scarce and complete run of this highly controversial and collectable comic, devised by the freelance writer Pat Mills in 1975. It was intended to compete with Warlord, reflecting changing times and being more contemporary and realistic. The stories were based on popular films, books, and comic heroes of the period, for example Hook Jaw and Jaws. It became the centre of a campaign by Mary Whitehouse as its content was considered too violent. It was dubbed "The Sevenpenny Nightmare". Distributors like W H Smith threatened to boycott this & other IPC magazines, and so because of this it was withdrawn on 16/10/76, and the 23/10/76 issue was pulped, only a couple of the 30 printed known to be in existence! It reappeared the following month, cover date 4/12/76 with its content toned down and continued until 12/11/77, when it merged with "Battle", which became Battle Action until 1982. It was highly influential, and a direct forerunner of "2000 AD". This is a superb collection of all 85 issues, in splendid condition, all the more unusual with the cheap paper used! More amazingly, issue 2 has a perfect Free Gift!! The Iron-on Transfer of Hook Jaw!! A remarkable opportunity to buy a little piece of comic history! [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Original Tattoo Flash Art. 1976

Original art on thick cardstock poster board. Measuring 18.25" x 14.25". Faint stain in the lower left-hand margin, else near fine. Signed: "Drawn by Spike 1976." Colorful and attractive flash art (if a bit crude in spots) with nine images plus the artist's cartouche. The central image is of a lingerie-clad vixen astride a Confederate Flag-draped skull framed in a garland of cannabis leaves. Other images include fierce and colorful birds, a skull impaled on a barbed cross, a white stallion, the Keep on Truckin' man, etc. Anecdotally from the Virginia Beach, Virginia-area, but no evidence beyond the signature of the most excellent Spike. Flash art from an era when body art wasn't a required rite of passage into adolescence. .

[Punk Flyers]: Archive of Material for the First West Coast Punk Band "Crime"

San Francisco. 1976. A small archive of three printing plates, three maquettes, three posters, and a 7" record sleeve made for the San Francisco punk band, Crime. All items are near fine with some modest chips, tears, and some waviness.Beginning in 1976, Crime, made up of "Johnny Strike" (vocals, guitar), Frankie Fix (vocals, guitar), Ron "The Ripper" Greco (bass; ex-Flamin' Groovies), and Chris Cat (drums), who was rapidly replaced by Ricky Tractor (Ricky Williams)," released the "first single by a U.S. punk act from the West Coast." It was a self-funded 45 with the tracks "Hot Wire My Heart" and "Baby You're So Repulsive," the sleeve for which is present here. Strike said of the record, "we saw it as the first 'something'. What, we weren't quite sure. We knew it was unique, especially when some hippie KSAN DJ said on the air that it was the worst record that he'd ever heard." A notorious group of musicians, in the loosest sense, who were known for their loud, raucous shows and "damn the man" attitude, Crime was said to have made "more enemies than fans" by the end of their short lived career. Fred Beldin, music critic for Resonance 49 Magazine, liken the band to "a stumbling drunk Chuck Berry fronting the Velvet Underground after an all-night binge." After forming they quickly decided to "cultivate their image" so they enlisted the help of photographer, James Stark, who created the band's logo and was responsible for numerous photo shoots used for flyers and album covers. "In 1976 he [Stark] met up with some people who were starting a rock n' roll band and needed some photographs, thus began a relationship with the band Crime" and punk. The "Hot Wire My Heart" 7" record featured a Stark photograph which was also used for a 1977 show at Mabuhay Gardens with Punk, both are in this archive along with the maquette or mock-ups for the flyer. Beldin said of the band's appearance, "four cold, cadaverous men clad in regulation police uniforms wearing dead, drugged sneers on their faces." Another print, a 22" x 24" black and white poster featuring the band dressed as 1920s gangsters surrounded by bags of money, is featured here along with the original printing plate for a Mabuhay show. Another plate declares Crime is "San Francisco's first rock n' roll banned," and shows the band members behind a chain link fence. The third printing plate is from 1978 by Bad Dream Image for a show at the Keystone Berk and shows stencil images of police beating someone.A New York Rocker magazine critic noted after a 1978 live show "Crime play loud. So loud that the plate glass window at the opposite end of the club shakes, tables tremble and people hang onto their drinks." Between 1976 and 1982 Crime managed to book shows at the legendary San Francisco venue of Mabuhay Gardens and even played at San Quentin Penitentiary playing "in full police regalia to the puzzled inmates." Their infamy was short lived and they remained a "local phenomenon, stubbornly staying in the face of a scene that considered them rude and primitive even by punk standards." Their attitudes cost them fans and only managed to anger fellow musicians, after they "shunned the label punk" and they eventually disbanded in 1982. A unique collection of early punk ephemera from a band who helped shape the San Francisco sound and West Coast punk. .

Stability of Polyatomic Molecules in Degenerate Electronic States. I - Orbital Degeneracy" in Proceedings of the Royal Society of London A 161, 1937, pp. 220-235

FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE OF ONE OF THE MOST FASCINATING PHENOMENA IN MODERN PHYSICS AND CHEMISTRY", THE JAHN AND TELLER EFFECT (Bersuker, The Jahn-Teller Effect). In a sophisticated application of group theory to quantum mechanics, Jahn and Teller here prove "that orbital nonlinear spatially degenerate molecules CANNOT be stable" (Wikipedia). This paper puts forth the groundbreaking prediction that "a nonlinear molecule which is in a degenerate state will seek to change its structure in order to remove as much of the degeneracy as possible;" put another way, "if the lowest energy level of a molecule is degenerate… it will distort spontaneously so as to remove the degeneracy and make one energy level more stable (Seip, The Jahn-Teller Effect, 1976, 1; Weinstein's World of Chemistry). "While the basic theorem, first published in 1937, had to await experimental verification for 15 years, the intervening years have seen rapid development, initially in the theoretical arena, followed increasingly by experimental work on molecules and crystals" (Köppel, The Jahn-Teller Effect: Fundamentals and Implications for Physics and Chemistry). Broadly speaking, the Jahn-Teller effect provides "a general approach to understanding the properties of molecules and crystals and their origins" (Bersuker, The Jahn-Teller Effect, Introduction). More specifically, the effect provides an exceptionally useful tool in the study of crystal and molecular configurations. "The Jahn-Teller effect is one of the most fascinating phenomena in modern physics and chemistry. It emerged in 1934 in a discussion between two famous physicists [Jahn and Teller] and grew into a general tool for understanding [as well as] an approach to solving molecular and crystal problems, which is applicable to any polyatomic problem. "The first formulation of the effect as instability of molecular configurations in electronically degenerate states proved to be the beginning of a whole trend which rationalizes the origin of all possible instabilities of high-symmetry configurations, and the peculiar nuclear dynamics resulting from these instabilities as well as the origins of all structural symmetry breakings in molecular systems and condensed matter" (Köppel). The next significant resurgence of interest in the Jahn-Teller effect is related to the late 1980s and is still continuing. It was triggered by one of the most important Nobel Prize discoveries in physics of our times inspired by the Jahn-Teller effect: the high-temperature superconductivity." (Bersuker). "The Jahn-Teller effect continues to be a paradigm for structural instabilities and dynamical processes in molecules and in the condensed phase… Among the many important developments in the field… cooperative phenomena in crystals, the general importance of pseudo-Jahn-Teller couplings for symmetry-lowering phenomena in molecular systems, nonadiabatic processes at conical intersections of potential energy surfaces and extensions of the basic theory in relation to the discovery of fullerenes and other icosahedral systems" (Köppel). The effect remains so relevant that The International Symposium on the Jahn-Teller Effects is held bi-annually at differing locations around the world. ALSO INCLUDED: Douglas Hartree's "A Method for the Numerical Or Mechanical Solution of Certain Types of Partial Differential Equations and Time-Lag in a Control System", parts I and II (pp. 353-366 and pp. 460-476). CONDITION & DETAILS: London: Taylor and Francis. Complete volume. 8vo. 8.5 by 5.5 inches (213 x 138mm). [4], vi, [598], 4. Ex-libris with two stamps on the title page and no exterior markings whatsoever. Sixteen plates and many in-text illustrations throughout. Handsomely rebound in brown cloth over aged marbled paper boards, gilt-lettered at the spine and gilt-ruled on the boards. Tightly and very solidly bound. New endpapers. Bright and clean throughout.
