        Interview with the Vampire

      - New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1976. "FIRST EDITION". 8vo. Very small red ink mark on bottom edge of text affecting only the last few leaves--not a remainder mark, more like a careless pen in someone's hand that made contact with the text block.         Original Tattoo Flash Art. 1976

Original art on thick cardstock poster board. Measuring 18.25" x 14.25". Faint stain in the lower left-hand margin, else near fine. Signed: "Drawn by Spike 1976." Colorful and attractive flash art (if a bit crude in spots) with nine images plus the artist's cartouche. The central image is of a lingerie-clad vixen astride a Confederate Flag-draped skull framed in a garland of cannabis leaves. Other images include fierce and colorful birds, a skull impaled on a barbed cross, a white stallion, the Keep on Truckin' man, etc. Anecdotally from the Virginia Beach, Virginia-area, but no evidence beyond the signature of the most excellent Spike. Flash art from an era when body art wasn't a required rite of passage into adolescence. .

[Punk Flyers]: Archive of Material for the First West Coast Punk Band "Crime"

San Francisco. 1976. A small archive of three printing plates, three maquettes, three posters, and a 7" record sleeve made for the San Francisco punk band, Crime. All items are near fine with some modest chips, tears, and some waviness.Beginning in 1976, Crime, made up of "Johnny Strike" (vocals, guitar), Frankie Fix (vocals, guitar), Ron "The Ripper" Greco (bass; ex-Flamin' Groovies), and Chris Cat (drums), who was rapidly replaced by Ricky Tractor (Ricky Williams)," released the "first single by a U.S. punk act from the West Coast." It was a self-funded 45 with the tracks "Hot Wire My Heart" and "Baby You're So Repulsive," the sleeve for which is present here. Strike said of the record, "we saw it as the first 'something'. What, we weren't quite sure. We knew it was unique, especially when some hippie KSAN DJ said on the air that it was the worst record that he'd ever heard." A notorious group of musicians, in the loosest sense, who were known for their loud, raucous shows and "damn the man" attitude, Crime was said to have made "more enemies than fans" by the end of their short lived career. Fred Beldin, music critic for Resonance 49 Magazine, liken the band to "a stumbling drunk Chuck Berry fronting the Velvet Underground after an all-night binge." After forming they quickly decided to "cultivate their image" so they enlisted the help of photographer, James Stark, who created the band's logo and was responsible for numerous photo shoots used for flyers and album covers. "In 1976 he [Stark] met up with some people who were starting a rock n' roll band and needed some photographs, thus began a relationship with the band Crime" and punk. The "Hot Wire My Heart" 7" record featured a Stark photograph which was also used for a 1977 show at Mabuhay Gardens with Punk, both are in this archive along with the maquette or mock-ups for the flyer. Beldin said of the band's appearance, "four cold, cadaverous men clad in regulation police uniforms wearing dead, drugged sneers on their faces." Another print, a 22" x 24" black and white poster featuring the band dressed as 1920s gangsters surrounded by bags of money, is featured here along with the original printing plate for a Mabuhay show. Another plate declares Crime is "San Francisco's first rock n' roll banned," and shows the band members behind a chain link fence. The third printing plate is from 1978 by Bad Dream Image for a show at the Keystone Berk and shows stencil images of police beating someone.A New York Rocker magazine critic noted after a 1978 live show "Crime play loud. So loud that the plate glass window at the opposite end of the club shakes, tables tremble and people hang onto their drinks." Between 1976 and 1982 Crime managed to book shows at the legendary San Francisco venue of Mabuhay Gardens and even played at San Quentin Penitentiary playing "in full police regalia to the puzzled inmates." Their infamy was short lived and they remained a "local phenomenon, stubbornly staying in the face of a scene that considered them rude and primitive even by punk standards." Their attitudes cost them fans and only managed to anger fellow musicians, after they "shunned the label punk" and they eventually disbanded in 1982. A unique collection of early punk ephemera from a band who helped shape the San Francisco sound and West Coast punk. .

Stability of Polyatomic Molecules in Degenerate Electronic States. I - Orbital Degeneracy" in Proceedings of the Royal Society of London A 161, 1937, pp. 220-235

FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE OF ONE OF THE MOST FASCINATING PHENOMENA IN MODERN PHYSICS AND CHEMISTRY", THE JAHN AND TELLER EFFECT (Bersuker, The Jahn-Teller Effect). In a sophisticated application of group theory to quantum mechanics, Jahn and Teller here prove "that orbital nonlinear spatially degenerate molecules CANNOT be stable" (Wikipedia). This paper puts forth the groundbreaking prediction that "a nonlinear molecule which is in a degenerate state will seek to change its structure in order to remove as much of the degeneracy as possible;" put another way, "if the lowest energy level of a molecule is degenerate… it will distort spontaneously so as to remove the degeneracy and make one energy level more stable (Seip, The Jahn-Teller Effect, 1976, 1; Weinstein's World of Chemistry). "While the basic theorem, first published in 1937, had to await experimental verification for 15 years, the intervening years have seen rapid development, initially in the theoretical arena, followed increasingly by experimental work on molecules and crystals" (Köppel, The Jahn-Teller Effect: Fundamentals and Implications for Physics and Chemistry). Broadly speaking, the Jahn-Teller effect provides "a general approach to understanding the properties of molecules and crystals and their origins" (Bersuker, The Jahn-Teller Effect, Introduction). More specifically, the effect provides an exceptionally useful tool in the study of crystal and molecular configurations. "The Jahn-Teller effect is one of the most fascinating phenomena in modern physics and chemistry. It emerged in 1934 in a discussion between two famous physicists [Jahn and Teller] and grew into a general tool for understanding [as well as] an approach to solving molecular and crystal problems, which is applicable to any polyatomic problem. "The first formulation of the effect as instability of molecular configurations in electronically degenerate states proved to be the beginning of a whole trend which rationalizes the origin of all possible instabilities of high-symmetry configurations, and the peculiar nuclear dynamics resulting from these instabilities as well as the origins of all structural symmetry breakings in molecular systems and condensed matter" (Köppel). The next significant resurgence of interest in the Jahn-Teller effect is related to the late 1980s and is still continuing. It was triggered by one of the most important Nobel Prize discoveries in physics of our times inspired by the Jahn-Teller effect: the high-temperature superconductivity." (Bersuker). "The Jahn-Teller effect continues to be a paradigm for structural instabilities and dynamical processes in molecules and in the condensed phase… Among the many important developments in the field… cooperative phenomena in crystals, the general importance of pseudo-Jahn-Teller couplings for symmetry-lowering phenomena in molecular systems, nonadiabatic processes at conical intersections of potential energy surfaces and extensions of the basic theory in relation to the discovery of fullerenes and other icosahedral systems" (Köppel). The effect remains so relevant that The International Symposium on the Jahn-Teller Effects is held bi-annually at differing locations around the world. ALSO INCLUDED: Douglas Hartree's "A Method for the Numerical Or Mechanical Solution of Certain Types of Partial Differential Equations and Time-Lag in a Control System", parts I and II (pp. 353-366 and pp. 460-476). CONDITION & DETAILS: London: Taylor and Francis. Complete volume. 8vo. 8.5 by 5.5 inches (213 x 138mm). [4], vi, [598], 4.         Archive of thousands of pages in Hebrew, English and French relating to lawsuits filed against Air France after the 1976 hijacking of flight 139 to Entebbe

Israel & United States, 1976 - 1989. Various. "Included in this vast archive are photocopies of 36 airline tickets for Air France flight 139, Tel-Aviv to Paris (including Mrs. Bloch's ticket), copies of lawsuits, newspaper articles, affidavits, and letters (originals and photocopies). Also included are documents relating to the 1972 Lod Airport massacre which involved terrorists who had arrived at the Tel-Aviv airport via Air France. Condition is mostly fine. The collection is worthy of further research. On June 27, 1976, Air France flight 139 left from Tel-Aviv for Paris with a stopover in Athens. Soon after takeoff from Athens, four terrorists commandeered the flight, diverting it to Libya for refueling. They flew to Entebbe Airport in Uganda where, on June 28th, Ugnadan President Idi Amin welcomed them. A list of demands was received on June 29th, calling for the release of 53 convicted terrorists held in Israel and other countries. The hijackers released some of the passengers who did not appear to be Israeli or Jewish and threatened to kill the rest if their demands were not met by July 1st. As a delaying tactic, Israel agreed to negotiate. In the early morning hours of July 4, 1976, an Israeli force of up to 200 soldiers landing at Entebbe, and rescued most of the hostages. The terrorists were killed as were three hostages and one Israeli soldier, the leader of the rescue force, Lt. Col, Yonatan Netanyahu. An elderly British passenger, Mrs. Dora Bloch, had been sent to a hospital before the raid; her body was later found. "

The Collected Essays of Sir Winston Churchill, complete in four volumes

London: Library of Imperial History, 1976. First edition. Hardcover. This four-volume set is a compilation of most of Churchill's major forewords and periodical contributions, some of which can be otherwise found only in the original periodical publications. The essays are sorted by subject and each of the volumes has a theme - Churchill and War, Churchill and Politics, Churchill and People, and Churchill at Large. In addition to being bibliographically important, The Collected Essays are aesthetically appealing. The production quality is impressive. There were two publisher binding options for The Collected Essays - both sumptuous and one positively extravagant. The lesser of the two was bound in quarter blue morocco and is lovely, but does not match the other 34 volumes of The Collected Works. The more elaborate binding option was full natural calfskin vellum with individual green slipcases, matching the 34 volumes of the preceding Centenary Edition of Churchill's book-length works. The bindings feature Churchill's coat of arms stamped in gilt. The text is printed on special 500-year archival paper and decorated with marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, head and foot bands, and silk ribbon markers. Each volume is protected in a dark green leather slipcase with the Churchill coat of arms embossed in gilt on the front cover. Either binding of The Collected Essays is scarce, but this more elaborate binding is rarely seen alone, as it is essential to completing a uniform full set of The Collected Works. This set is fine in very good slipcases. The volumes are clearly unread. The bindings show no wear and have toned with grace and individual character, as the vellum bindings were intended to do. The contents are absolutely crisp and perfect, with pleasingly stiff bindings and satin ribbon markers still in the original position placed by the publisher. There are no previous ownership marks. The only defects we note in the volumes are tiny bumps to the Volume I & II upper front corners corresponding to bumps to the accompanying slipcases. The green leather slipcases show a few corner bumps and short (no more than .75 inch) splits starting at a few upper edges. Despite these small flaws, the slipcases remain bright, clean, and intact.         Stability of Polyatomic Molecules in Degenerate Electronic States. I - Orbital Degeneracy" in Proceedings of the Royal Society of London A 161, 1937, pp. 220-235

      - FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE OF ONE OF THE MOST FASCINATING PHENOMENA IN MODERN PHYSICS AND CHEMISTRY", THE JAHN AND TELLER EFFECT (Bersuker, The Jahn-Teller Effect). In a sophisticated application of group theory to quantum mechanics, Jahn and Teller here prove "that orbital nonlinear spatially degenerate molecules CANNOT be stable" (Wikipedia). This paper puts forth the groundbreaking prediction that "a nonlinear molecule which is in a degenerate state will seek to change its structure in order to remove as much of the degeneracy as possible;" put another way, "if the lowest energy level of a molecule is degenerate? it will distort spontaneously so as to remove the degeneracy and make one energy level more stable (Seip, The Jahn-Teller Effect, 1976, 1; Weinstein's World of Chemistry). "The Jahn-Teller effect continues to be a paradigm for structural instabilities and dynamical processes in molecules and in the condensed phase? Among the many important developments in the field? cooperative phenomena in crystals, the general importance of pseudo-Jahn-Teller couplings for symmetry-lowering phenomena in molecular systems, nonadiabatic processes at conical intersections of potential energy surfaces and extensions of the basic theory in relation to the discovery of fullerenes and other icosahedral systems" (Köppel). Ex-libris with two stamps on the title page and no exterior markings whatsoever. Sixteen plates and many in-text illustrations throughout. Handsomely rebound in brown cloth over aged marbled paper boards, gilt-lettered at the spine and gilt-ruled on the boards. Tightly and very solidly bound. New endpapers. Bright and clean throughout. Near fine condition in every way.

        GEOGRAPHY III

New York: Farrar Straus Giroux (1976). 1st edition, full brown cloth, with illustrated dust jacket. A presentation copy to fellow poet, inscribed: "With all best wishes for William Jay Smith -- / Elizabeth Bishop" in black ink on the title page. Bishop (born 1911) and Smith (born 1918) were contemporaries in age as well as careers, and both highly regarded by their peers. Smith wrote his piece "Elizabeth Bishop / Critical Essay" which focused on GEOGRAPHY III, and one can rightfully assume by the pencil annotations found in the text that the present copy was indeed his reference copy/tool. Other than such annotations, the physical condition of the book is fine, in like (not price clipped) fine jacket. (MacMahon A13.) A desirable and important copy in every respect.
