"The majority of the leaders of the Alignment refuse to establish a government of national unity. However, among the public, regardless of their opinions, there is an increasing demand for the special unification. May this yearning bring forth the long-awaited fruit ..." In 1977, less than three years later, Begin's Likud Party defeated the Alignment and he became Israel's Prime Minister.

[Jerusalem, Israel], December 6,1974. 8.25" x 10.5". "Typed Letter Signed ""M. Begin"" as Member of the Knesset, in Hebrew, 1 page, 8.25"" x 10.5"". [Jerusalem, Israel], The Knesset, December 6, 1974. To David Avni, Jerusalem. In Hebrew with full English translation. Light creasing, two file holes in blank right margin with backing on verso. Very Good condition. In full, ""Herewith I confirm receipt of your letter of 10 Kislev 5735 - November 24, 1974, fir which I thank you. I have read your serious and important words with much interest. We agree with you: at the moment, there is a need for a government of national unity, and therefore we continue to demand its establishment, for the sake of our people's firm standing against pressure and testing times. The faith in the future of our people, as expressed in your letter, is an important factor in this standing. This is indeed the way to overcome all the problems. Surely, you have noticed that, for now, the majority of the leaders of the Alignment refuse to establish a government of national unity. However, among the public, regardless of their opinions, there is an increasing demand for the special unification. May this yearning bring forth the long-awaited fruit.""Gen. Yitzhak Rabin had replaced Golda Meir as Prime Minister in June 1974. There were two major political groupings in Israel, the coalition dominated by the Labor Party (the Labor Mapai Alignment), and the Likud coalition dominated by Menachem Begin's Herut Party. On May 17, 1977, the Likud Party won the national elections and on June 21, 1977, the first time in Israeli history a party other than the Alignment/Mapai was in a position to form a government. Begin became Prime Minister, serving from 1977-1983.Menachem Begin served in the first ten Israeli Knessets, the ninth and tenth as Prime Minister. When he wrote this letter, he was a member of Knesset 8, in the Likud parliamentary group."

        The Power Broker

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1974. First edition of the author's Pulitzer-Prize winning work on Robert Moses. Thick octavo, original black cloth, cartographic endpapers. Signed by Robert A. Caro on the title page. Small name to the endpaper, near fine in a a near fine price-clipped dust jacket. Dust jacket design by Paul Bacon. A very nice example of this bulky book, which tends to show wear. One of the most acclaimed books of our time, winner of both the Pulitzer and the Francis Parkman prizes, the Power Broker tells the hidden story behind the shaping (and mis-shaping) of twentieth-century New York and makes public what few have known: that Robert Moses was, for almost half a century, the single most powerful man of our time in New York, the shaper not only of the city's politics but of its physical structure and the problems of urban decline that plague us today. "Surely the greatest book ever written about a city." (David Halberstam) Theodore H. White called it "A masterpiece of American reporting. It's more than the story of a tragic figure or the exploration of the unknown politics of our time. It's an elegantly written and enthralling work of art."

(Haarlem: Carlinapers, 1974). Tall, narrow octavo. (20)pp. One of forty copies. A reprint of the original 1943 edition, which was also published in a limited edition of forty copies.         Absolute One-Step Photography offprint WITH initial press release examples

London: Headley Brothers Ltd, 1974. First Separate Edition. Wraps. Near Fine. First Separate Edition. 7 pages plus 4 pages center fold with color illustrations of chemistry of SX-70 integral film and sample images. 8 1/4 x 11 inches. Tan printed wrappers. We also include the sample of press release information released by Polaroid at the time (less the issue of Scientific American with their first advertisement). Wraps. Edwin H. Land, the President of Polaroid, was the inventor of the in-camera self-processing photographic system. We know it as the social phenomena called the Polaroid SX-70, first released in 1973. Many of us were the subjects of the famous "click, chunk, whirrrr" followed by the magical appearance of a photograph which developed before our eyes. Gone was the necessity to send film to the lab for developing. Or in earlier innovations from Polaroid, the need to time the film, taking it apart, and fix it all the while trembling in anticipation of the world of hurt from our family if that precious first step of baby Tammy didn't appear right. Land realized quite early that the instant gratification, instant development film camera would revolutionize picture taking for the masses. While the camera was expensive in the beginning, almost $200 plus $7 for each film pack, by 1974 (a year after release) some 700,000 had been sold. The first generation of true instant selfies became reality. In this offprint, The Royal Photographic Society reprints a speech by Edwin H. Land in May 1973 where he detailed not only some of the history, but many of the detailed technical workings of the camera for his fascinated audience. Scarce, and a piece of our cultural history, described in a technical light. "We now reproduce for the first time Dr. Land's description and illustration of the journal of the potassium ions which is such an essentail part of the whole subject. Those who were present at the lecture will remember that during the evening a num,ber of photographs of flowers, etc. were taken with the new camera and some of these are reproduced in the centre pages." Scarce both in the marketplace and institutionally, with no copies traced as of this listing.

Tape offsetting to the front and rear endpapers and to the dust jacket flaps, a good copy in the original dust jacket with some light rubbing. Dusklands is a pair of novellas in the tradition of Conrad's Heart of Darkness. The first novella "Dusklands" probes the links between the powerful and the powerless. The second novella "Vietnam Project" is narrated by a researcher investigating the effectiveness of United States propaganda and psychological warfare in Vietnam. The question of power is also explored in "The Narrative of Jacobus Coetzee," the story of an eighteenth-century Boer frontiersman who vows revenge on the Hottentot natives because they have failed to treat him with the respect that he thinks a white man deserves.

"Enormously influential journey of self-discovery permeated by philosophical discussion, and startlingly original and disturbing imagery, based on an autobiographical account of a journey across the USA on a motorbike undertaken with his son in 1968; the shifts between narrative, analogy, and philosophical meditation have prompted several critics to see this work as a latter-day Moby-Dick" (Stringer, 532).
