        Billion Dollar Baby [*SIGNED*]

Atheneum, New York 1974 - [spine slightly turned, light shelfwear to bottom edge, minor bumping/cracking at corners (top and bottom), a couple of tiny ink spots on fore-edge; jacket bright and clean, with just a handful of faint wrinkles and puckers here and there]. (B&W photographs) INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the 2nd ffep, to (of all people) the iconoclastic American composer Alec Wilder. Greene's riveting chronicle of his several weeks on the road with the Alice Cooper band during late 1973, as they were riding the wave of their greatest commercial success, their "Billion Dollar Babies" album, and provoking middle-class outrage throughout the land with their outrageous faux-violent stage theatrics, which employed eye-popping special effects and props such as decapitated baby dolls. (The climactic highlight of the band's shows during this period was Alice's mock execution by guillotine.) The book was notable for its warts-and-all behind-the-scenes depiction of the rock life, including "the sexuality, the titillation of forbidden pleasures, the triumph of money over taste," in a "world of marathon recording sessions in New York studios, of dope and liquor and lavish hotel suites and thousands of fans screaming your name and nocturnal raps on the door from teen-age girls who adore you; a world of charter flights on luxurious private jets, of conniving and cruelty and planned outrage." Included is a harrowing account of a Toledo, Ohio, concert at which the unruly behavior of the audience (depicted by Greene as pretty much an all-out attack on the band) forced the band to abandon the stage just ten minutes into the concert. It's also worth noting that among the participants in the 1973-1974 tour was magician James Randi (aka The Amazing Randi), who designed and built the aforementioned guillotine and operated it onstage as Cooper's "executioner." Very hard to find these days (even the paperback edition sells for $100+), all the more so signed, and especially with an inscription that provides something of a "bridge" between two musicians (Cooper and Wilder) from quite different worlds.         NOT COMIN' HOME TO YOU

      G. P. Putnam's Sons, [1974]., New York - First edition. Pseudonym of Lawrence Block. This very scarce book by Lawrence Block under this pseudonym, is the third and final book with that byline and the scarcest. A light ghost of the removal of a sticker on the front pastedown sheet, else fine in a fine, fresh dust jacket with none of the usual soiling or other signs of wear. This is a story based upon an actual incident and is a powerful suspense and murder shocker. The inspiration for this novel is the killing spree of Charles Starkweather and Caril-Ann Fugate across the Midwest in the late 1950's. The front and rear endpapers provide a map of Nebraska and a trip along Route 80 from Grand Island, North Platte, Ogallala, etc., the primary route taken by the couple.         Of Spirits and Apparitions, or A True and Faithful Relation of John Dee and Some Spirits

The Antonine Press and Golden Dragon Press 1974 - Falkirk and Portmeirion: The Antonine Press and Golden Dragon Press, 1974. Limited Facsimile Edition of the 1659 edition, SIGNED by both publishers and numbered 382 of 1000 copies on limitation card attached to rear pastedown. Folio (13.25" x 8.75") in slipcase. Printed dustjacket over cloth-covered boards. Slipcase shows a good bit of rubbing/scuffing to face and spine, but no splits or bumps. Unclipped dustjacket toned at edges but crisp and clean with no chips or tears. Small book supplier sticker on front pastedown. Binding is sound and pages are unmarked. Mathematician, astronomer, astrologer, political thinker, librarian, and occult philosopher, John Dee spent much of his time trying to communicate with angels and devils when he wasn't advising Queen Elizabeth or tutoring Sir Philip Sidney. One of the most significant figures in Alchemy and Hermetic Philosophy right at the time when Science and Magic each woke up frantic with the hunch it might be time to start seeing other people but kept trying to stick it out a bit longer, not quite ready for the "It's not you, it's me" conversation. Finished his life as Warden of Christ's College, Manchester and died sometime in 1608-1609. Presumably buried at the Church of St. Mary, Mortlake, because of course his gravestone and all parish records are missing. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Fine Autograph Letter Signed with Initials to Gaby GOLDSCHEIDER (Oskar, 1886-1980, Austrian-born British Artist, Poet & Playwright)

1974 - in London, daughter of his old friend and collaborator Ludwig GOLDSCHEIDER (1896-1973, Austrian-born Art Historian & Poet, who founded the Phaidon Press in Vienna in 1923 and then in England in 1938), in German with transcription and translation, saying he knows "that your dear father is no longer alive. I wrote you a letter a little while ago. I am very sorry that, again, one of my few true friends is gone . By good fortune you always got on well with him and he needed that very much because he too had no one else in a world that was ever more foreign to him . I would dearly like to see you once more", he continues "Your wood engravings are not supposed to go through the post" but have to be hand-carried, "I have to take these to the 'Customs Office', God knows where it is situated in Lausanne . signing for everything takes such a time, doesn't it?", asking ". Do you make a living? Are you going to get married one day?", and ending "it is too late for Happy Easter", so "best wishes for Whitsun and come once more and see your O.K.", with a beautiful reproduction of a scene in colours by the artist, showing park land sloping down to a river, people promenading and couples dancing under the trees, watched by a mounted rider in the bottom left corner, at the head Kokoschka has pasted a strip of paper, with, in pencil in English, "for Gaby at Easter-time from OK", 5½" x 8¼", and with the original autograph envelope, the letter 2 sides 8vo, Villeneuve, Vaud, Switzerland, 24th April (Transcription) O. Kokoschka 24.4.74 1844 Villeneuve (Suisse) Tél. Was machst du denn überhaupt? Hast du zu leben? Wirst du auch einmal unter die Haube kommen? Viele Fragen, Probleme. Verspätet noch herzliche Oster - nun vielmehr Pfingsten wünsche und zeig dich einmal deinem OK (Translation) O. Kokoschka 24th April 1974 1844 Villeneuve (Switzerland) Tel. (021) 60 13 12 My dear Gaby, I know that your dear father is no longer alive. I wrote you a letter a little while ago. I am very sorry that, again, one of my few true friends is gone. One becomes more and more alone. By good fortune you always got on well with him and he needed that very much because he too had no one else in a world that was ever more foreign to him. How are you now? Won't you be coming this way again? I would dearly like to see you once more. Your wood engravings are not supposed to go through the post but either brought yourself or by someone known to you. I have to take these to the 'Customs Office', God knows where it is situated in Lausanne. It would be difficult through the post, they are so pedantic here, signing for something takes such a time, doesn't it? What do you do chiefly? Do you make a living? Are you going to get married one day? So many questions, problems. It is too late for 'Happy Easter', so now instead, best wishes for Whitsun and come once more and see your OK Ludwig Goldscheider also wrote the text for the Phaidon 'Oskar Kokoschka', London, 1963. After her father's death, Gaby opened an antiquarian bookshop in Windsor and wrote a bibliography of Sherlock Holmes. [See the Times, 30th November 1985]. In Austria, Kokoschka had not always got on with his own

Theodore Sturgeon praised The Dispossessed as "a beautifully written, beautifully composed book", saying "it performs one of [science fiction's] prime functions, which is to create another kind of social system to see how it would work.
