Morrison, Toni
Allen Lane, London, 1973. First edition of the Nobel Prize-winning author's second novel. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Toni Morrison on the title page. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Wendell Minor. Nominated for the National Book Award, Sula exemplifies the mysteries of death, friendship, and poverty, and its rare economy in writing is met with critical acclaim and popular success, establishing Morrison as one of the 20th century's most significant novelists. Sara Blackburn wrote that Morrison's extravagantly beautiful, doomed characters are locked in a world where hope for the future is a foreign commodity, yet they are enormously, achingly alive." And Morrison's writing is "[e]xtravagantly beautiful. . . . Enormously, achingly alive. . . . A howl of love and rage, playful and funny as well as hard and bitter" (The New York Times). LE CARRÉ, John; pseudonym of CORNWELL, David John Moore
Typescript: Later published by Hodder and Stoughton. c.1973. Typescript draft. [iv], 455 pages, bound in card covers. Printed by Scripts Limited for the author and his literary agents John Farquharson Ltd. With the author's compliment slip laid in. In very good condition, the covers a little creased, nicked and toned as would be expected of a working document, the contents with a handful of emendations in ink and the occasional finger mark or smudge to the margins. Housed in a collector's bespoke folding case. In house working documents pertaining to any of Le Carre's novels are rare in commerce. The earliest drafts of this novel dating from 1969 were hand-written under the title "The Reluctant Autumn of George Smiley". The text was developed and reworked extensively over the course of several years through to this late draft printed for use by the author his literary agents to work through the final stages before submission. As is evident by the emendations on this typescript the novel was still very much a work in progress. The author has donated his extensive working archive to the Bodleian Library, the papers relating to this Smiley novel alone, the first of the so called Karla trilogy and one of his best known filled 17 boxes. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.

Brooks, John
New York: Weybright and Talley, 1973. First edition of this work regarding Wall Street in the 1960s. Octavo, original cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page, "For Dick Whalen with warm regards John Brooks." The recipient Richard J. Whalen was a fellow writer, among whose books include Trade Warriors and The Founding Father: The Story of Joseph P. Kennedy. Very good in a very good dust jacket. Jacket design by Paul Bacon. The Go-Go Years tells the story of Wall Street in the Swinging Sixties... before the bubble burst! Wall Street in the fabulous era of speculation, synergism, creative accounting, the youth market and Chinese money... when conglomerates sprouted like crowds of daffodils and new investors swooned over mutual funds. Writing with wit and wisdom, John Brooks provides an endlessly absorbing portrayal of the money market swept along by a euphoria reminiscent of 1929.

DALI, Salvador.
Signed limited edition of Dali's only novel.DALI, Salvador. Hidden Faces translated by Haakon Chevalier. London: Peter Owen, 1973.8vo., original vellum-backed marbled paper-covered boards, vellum ruled and lettered in gilt to spine; top edge gilt; white ribbon marker; matching red cloth-covered original slipcase; illustrated with black and white reproductions of paintings by Dali; pp. [ii], 318, [ii]; some light creasing to edges of vellum and the odd very small spot; else fine in fine slipcase.Limited edition, number 20 of 100 numbered copies signed by Dali. With the accompanying pamphlet Postface to Hidden Faces, comprising Objective Chance and Reverie by Dali.Hidden Faces was originally written French in autumn 1943, two years after Dali had published his autobiography to great success. Chevalier, a professor at Berkeley University, spent several weeks with Dalí, translating directly into English as Dalí wrote. The novel was compelted in two weeks on the estate of the Marquis de Cuevas in Franconia, a mansion in the mountains of New Hampshire next to the Canadian border. Despite the switch in media, Dali's surrealist qualities are easily transposed to paper, as he vividly describes the experiences and love-affairs of a group of aristocrats in pre-war Europe from February 1934 during the Paris riots, to the end of the Second World War. It was poorly received on publication, but revived in 1973 with renewed interest in its only partially hidden autobiographical nature. Chevalier himself described the novel as: "an epitaph of pre-war Europe (...) It is primarily a novel of … [Click Below for Full Description]

1973. W. Eugene Smith Minamata Life Sacred and Profane Portfolio 12 Plates Slipcase SIGNED W. Eugene Smith SIGNED Aileen Smith Minamata: Life Sacred and Profane. W. Eugene Smith. Soju-Sha, Tokyo, 1973. Large folio. 16 x 12 inches. 12 loose plates printed on coated paper housed in photo-illustrated portfolio. Includes a two page detailed chronology of W. Eugene Smith's career. Chronology text in English. SIGNED by W. Eugene Smith on the outside of the slipcase on the upper right. Also signed by his wife, Aileen Smith just below. Very good plates in a good plus slipcase. This portfolio pre-dates the American book on Minamata by two years. It was published in conjunction with an exhibition of the photographs presented at the Seiba Department Store that traveled to other Japanese cities. Perhaps Smith's best work, Minamata documents the Japanese struggle against the ravages of pollution. Defining a classic photojournalist trope, it opens with the source of pollution and proceeds to expose its very human effects, the struggle and protests, the joy of victory and the legacy of careless destruction. It was within this essay that Smith's haunting photographs of Tomoko first appeared. The images chosen show the industrial pollution, the disfiguring effects of Minamata Disease on the people of the area, protests against the polluters, and the members of the environmental disputes board debating the situation. "Photography is a small voice at best," writes Smith, "Daily we are deluged with photography at its worst - until its drone of superficiality threatens to numb our sensitivity t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Halász, Károly
[S.n], [S. l.], 1973. Original, vintage poster. Printed in black-and-white. 205 × 289 mm. Signed poster by the Hungarian Neo-Avant-Garde artist, Károly Halász (1946-2016). The poster shows the black-and-white photographic reproduction of the documentation of Halász's 1973 performance, "Museum". His performance took place at a gathering of the Pécs Workshop, a collective of neo-avant-garde artists of the south-west Hungarian city, Pécs, which operated on the blind spot of the Hungarian art scene between the late sixties and the eighties. Halász kept track of Western European and American art and identified with international trends. He worked in several different media. His oeuvre included concept art, installation, performance art, body art, video, and film. In his 1973 work he "recreated" the most important locations of art from cardboard and created miniature reproductions of artworks, which he considered as the most important ones and placed them into jars. Signed in the upper right in pen. In fine condition. Printed in black-and-white. 205 × 289 mm

ALI, MUHAMMAD.)
Lahore, 1973. Presentation copy inscribed by Muhammad Ali to his friend, trainer, cornerman, adviser, and phrase-coiner "To Drew Bundini Brown from Muhammad Ali Your Brother Make your life, for the work of Allah 20/6/75 Peace and Love Forever."The conversion of Olympic and professional boxing champion Cassius Clay to Islam in 1964, the changing of his "slave name," and Ali's subsequent refusal to serve in Vietnam were landmark events in the Civil Rights movement. For decades, Muhammad Ali, perhaps the most recognizable person in the world, was the most prominent Muslim in American popular culture.Drew "Bundini" Brown joined Ali's camp in 1963 and was with the champion for virtually his entire career. He served in Ali's corner in all of the great fights. Brown is credited with helping Ali craft some of his most memorable lines including the famous "float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.""They were boxing's best duet. Before or after a sparring session, or when the television cameras were on, or whenever the occasion called for some noise, Muhammad Ali and Drew (Bundini) Brown would shout, 'Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee. Rumble, young man, rumble.' After a pause, they would roar, 'Aaargh,' and break up in laughter. And upon seeing each other in recent years, they would recreate the act they had developed in 1964 just before the boxer then known as Cassius Clay dethroned Sonny Liston as the world heavyweight champion ... He pronounced his nickname 'Boodini,' with the 'n' silent, which he seldom was. He coined and even copyrighted 'Float like a butterfly, sting li … [Click Below for Full Description]

His beloved Mallorca, the sunlit island where he lived and worked from 1940 on, was the subject of much of his most inventive work. In 1973, as a contribution to the festivities being planned for his birthday celebration, Miro completed this notable edition of El Vol de l'Alosa to honor the works of nineteen Mallorcan poets. Specially commissioned for this project was the Guarro paper with Mir'o's own signatures figured into the watermarks on each sheet of the book. For each poem he executed a unique graphic sign and to hold the unbound sheets, a cloth box - in black on red (symbolizing Spain) and black on blue (symbolizing the sea around Mallorca). CHRISTO & Jeanne-Claude
Multiple, the Book "Christo" wrapped in canvas and with twine, 1973, signed in pen and numbered 10/100, published by Abrams Original Editions, New York, 31 x 28cm. Christo began wrapping and packaging objects in the late 1950s. His early works made use of items from daily life – such as books and boxes – which he draped, folded and bound in fabric. Later he collaborated with his wife Jeanne-Claude to wrap entire buildings and environments. While visually the folds of fabric in their works refer to classical forms from art history, the process of wrapping relates more broadly to cultural practices of preserving, shrouding and concealing.
