Southern, Terry
N.p. N.p., circa 1973. Seven-page manuscript, executed in holograph pencil with numerous corrections. An early rough draft of an essay by Southern regarding his first encounter with actor Rip Torn, which, oddly, is more an encounter with the concept of Rip Torn than Rip Torn himself (though Torn would ultimately become one of Southern's closest friends and confidants). The piece was ultimately published as "One of the Real...ah...Originals" in the April 1973 issue of Saturday Review of the Arts. With reference to his involvement in "The Cincinnati Kid" during Sam Peckinpah's brief tenure with same, Southern describes a meeting with the film's producer, the producer still reeling from Peckinpah's acrimonious departure (Norman Jewison would ultimately take the directorial reigns). The bulk of the essay details how Southern wrote a new scene in the midst of the change, introducing what would become Torn's character, Slade, a "gentleman" card shark. Full provenance available on request. Lined notebook paper, rectos only, 8.5 x 11 inches. Near Fine.

Maas, Peter [Al Pacino]
New York: The Viking Press, 1973. First edition of this classic work, basis for the film starring Al Pacino. Octavo, original cloth, with four pages of illustrations. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page, "Dedicated to all the cops of Ridgeville, Ohio (a corps of 2) Peter Maas." Additionally signed by Al Pacino on the half-title page. Near fine in a good price-clipped dust jacket. Jacket design by Stanley Phillips. Peter Maas once said that his books usually started with "'some anger I have about something, or what someone does about something that gets them hurt'... Time and again he returned to organized crime, organized corruption and people whose revelations shattered myths or created new ones. He spent the 1980s and 90s investigating everyone from Mafia turncoats to rogue CIA agents to clemency-sellers in Tennessee after he became famous in the 1960s and 70s for a pair of true-crime stories. One was about Joseph Valachi, who revealed the secrets of the Mafia. The other was about NY detective Frank Serpico." Based on months of interviews and written with "effortless smoothness," his book chronicles Serpico's struggle to combat corruption and the shooting that nearly killed him (New York Times). The 1973 film adaptation starring Al Pacino and directed by Sidney Lumet won Oscar nominations for Pacino, and screenwriters Waldo Salt and Norman Wexler. Maas, who died in 2001, "gave half of his $400,000 screen rights income to Serpico. 'After all,' he observed, 'it's his life'" (Los Angeles Times).

1973. An archive consisting of 60 loose black & white snapshots and related photographs of an Israeli soldier and the military operations of an Israeli Defense Force (IDF) armored brigade in the field, spanning the years from 1958 through the mid-1970s. The collection includes images taken during the 1967 Six Day War and 1973 Yom Kippur War, and other IDF military operations. Also included are images of various bands of armed men dating back to 1959, most of whom are informally dressed and armed with rifles. The collection contains an Israeli ID card of a young man issued in 1958 (presumably of the photographer) who served in an armored brigade, along with a snapshot of a woman in uniform dating from the same period, and three or four family photographs taken in Eastern Europe; one of which shows a young boy and father at a family grave in Poland. Although we have not be able to clearly identify the photographer, the image of the headstone in Poland records the name of Josef Sadek who died in 1956. The collection is roughly divided into three groups, the first consisting of 21 prints dating from 1959 - 1960; a second lot of 33 prints dating from the 1960s - 1970s (including one color print of IDF soldiers assigned to a bulldozer); and a third lot of six personal prints (including the ID card). A few prints are captioned on the back in Hebrew, all in near fine condition. An intriguing collection featuring many compelling images of Israeli tank crews and individual soldiers during a turbulent time for the newly establish nation.
