        THE DISPOSSESSED: AN AMBIGUOUS UTOPIA

New York, Evanston, San Francisco, London: Harper & Row, Publishers, [1974].. Octavo,cloth-backed boards. First edition. Signed on the title page by Le Guin. "The novel reveals the author's understanding of anarchist theories with the idea that the personal and political growth of the individual are complementary ... [With her] complex literary, philosophical, and political construction, Le Guin challenges the idea of utopia itself and sets the basis for what has been called the 'critical utopia' -- an imperfect utopia in progress that, by questioning the very notion and convention of the genre, revitalizes it." - R. Baccolini, Fortunati and Trousson (eds), Dictionary of Literary Utopias, pp. 174-6. Winner of the 1974 Nebula and 1975 Hugo awards for best novel. Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-640. Pringle, Science Fiction: The 100 Best Novels 74. Survey of Science Fiction Literature II, pp. 548-53. A fine copy in fine dust jacket. (#149039)

        THE FOREVER WAR

New York: St. Martin's Press, [1974, i.e. 1975].. Octavo, boards. First edition. Signed inscription by Haldeman "for Apple" dated 4 September 1976 on title page. "Tough, slick narrative of an interstellar war which lasts [over] 1000 years. To the soldier hero, it seems to last about ten years, thanks to the time-dilation effect of faster-than-light travel. Good, realistic, military SF which actually subverts many of the clichés of that category ... (he was a Vietnam veteran, which helped). Initially rejected by 18 publishers, it has since sold over a million copies." - Pringle, The Ultimate Guide to Science Fiction, second edition (1995), pp. 141-2. Haldeman's first SF novel. Winner of the 1975 Hugo award for best novel. Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-479. Sargent, British and American Utopian Literature, 1516-1985, p. 360. Survey of Science Fiction Literature II, pp. 813-8. Faint spotting to upper edge of text block, else a fine copy in very good or somewhat better dust jacket (priced $7.95) with some of the almost inevitable rubbing to blue background ink, here limited to rear panel, mostly upper spine end and upper rear corner. Sheet measures 13" x 9" This original croquis from the designer Christian Dior features a dress from the Winter 1974/75 collection. This croquis was made from a xerograph of an original drawing, which was then hand-colored with ink, watercolor, and gouache. Swatches of the appropriate fabrics, black and blue muslin with metallic embroidered flowers, are attached. These sketches were produced in a limited quantity and presented to potential clients in attendance at the Paris Couture shows held by Dior in the spring and fall of each year.         [Scrapbook and Photo album]: Balky Burros Hee Haw

Loveland, Colorado. 1974-1975. Folio measuring 15" x 12". Green leatherette photo album with handmade cover with applied elements. A scrapbook for the years 1974 to 1975 for a Colorado camping group, the Balky Burro's, run by the National Campers & Hikers Association, now the Family Campers & RVers. Filled with various newspaper articles, camp newsletters, small souvenirs, and 193 color snap shot photographs ranging in size from 2.75" x 1.5" and 4" x 3". Moderate rubbing and some tiny chips on the front board else near fine. A scrapbook from September of 1974-75 made by Louise Sexauer for various Balky Burro's Camping functions around the Colorado area which were run by the National Campers & Hikers Association. Louise has several pages decorated for the events and photographs of the "Campvention." Some of the photos are of her and the other campers dressed up as clowns for entertainment during the festival. She lists some of the families on the trip with her and when describing her and her husband she employees a moderately amusing pun, "The only NCHA chapter in USA with a Sex-auer! The others have to be satisfied with a 'coffee-break!". She goes into detail about the people, places, and events that were had on the trip. One of these events was a "Hobo Party" filled with food, music, and friends dressed in homeless attire. Included is an article "Colorado-Balky Burros held a 'Happy Hobo Party' with the Pineconers as guests. Happy hour, hobo stew, and burro bingo were the highlights," written about the event for the 'Round the Campfire News. A few pages are dedicated to the group's celebration of Christmas with pictures of various campers sitting on Santa's lap with quotes of what they said, "Of course Santa, you old-wise man, I've been a good girl," featuring a little old lady with a big grin. While most events seem to be parties, there are also a couple of community cleanups that the campers organize. "Organized by the Balky Burros chapter, was to clean up Potters' field, a section of the cemetery where poor people or those without family are buried," written for the AG News Letter. Several pictures show the campers cleaning up the cemetery with little notes written, "It's hard work, but worth the effort!" and "A Labor of Love." They also go to work on a hiking trail, cleaning it up and making it more accessible to the public. A Junior Forest Ranger's badge is pinned onto this page, featuring Smokey the bear. The last pictures and pages are of the trip coming to an end and spending time with the families the Sexauer's had gotten so close with. The National Campers & Hikers Association (NCHA), which sponsored the Balky Burro's, was found in 1949 by Hank Ellsworth Nathan. It started at the Beaverkill Public campsite in New York near the Catskill Mountains. Since 1986 the office has been located in New York and is up and running to this day. The first "Campvention" was held in 1961 in Missouri with 272 families in attendance. Within 11 years the number of families increased to 7,842 but by 1998 due to decreasing interest and membership the Campvention now works on a regional rotation. An interesting look back on the social functions and friendships developed via RV culture during the 1970s, the vintage color snapshots and the DIY nature of the album reflect the time and the spirit of the era. .

Grady was just 24 and out of work when he knocked out his manuscript on an old manual typewriter while living in a garage in Missoula, Montana; (2) "Shadow of the Condor"(1975) picks up the story of CIA treachery where "Six Days" left off; (3) "The Great Pebble Affair" (1976), written under the pen name, "Brit Shelby," tells the story of eight people who conspire together to make millions, using "investment capital" stolen from a bank; (4) in "Catch The Wind" (1980), set during the 1970s energy crisis, members of a Montana cattle ranching community find themselves at each other's throats after a strip mining company offers fistfuls of cash to anyone willing to sell his or her grazing lands, which sit collectively atop a vast vein of coal; (5) in "Runner In The Street" (1984), Grady introduces veteran Washington, D.C., private eye John Rankin, who discovers a dark side of the nation's capital even he didn't know about, while investigating the murder of a Harrvard-educated prostitute whose father is a powerful U.S. Senator; (6) in his first paperback original, "Razor Game" (1985), Grady depicts the hunt for a serial killer who inexplicably targets both children and prostitutes, slashing them to death; (7) in "Hard Bargains" (1985), John Rankin reappears, this time to accept an assignment from a femme fatale with a very unusual request; (8) in his second and last paperback original, "Just A Shot Away" (1987), Grady introduces Baltimore homicide detective Devlin Rourke, who hunts for a mysterious assassin who already has slain four Baltimoreans and is gunning for more; (9) "Steeltown" (1989) portrays an epic struggle for wealth and political power among competing interests in a dying American 'rust belt' city; (10) "River of Darkness" (1991) marked Grady's critically acclaimed return to the deadly and murky world of espionage and intrigue among America's spymasters, recently humiliated by their failure to anticipate the Soviet Union's historic collapse; (11) "Thunder" (1994) is another post-Cold War CIA thriller, in which the Company's liaison to the U.S. Senate searches for the killer of a trusted colleague, while trying to avoid becoming his next victim; (12) "White Flame" (1996) finds FBI agents and local police forces scrambling to prevent the planned assassination of a charismatic, but also controversial, black ex-con turned politician, as he travels the country campaigning for president; (13) in "City of Shadows" (2000), published under the pen name "James Dalton," Grady revisits the Watergate era, inventing a chilling "what if?" scenario about what "really" happenened behind the scenes during Richard Nixon's tainted presidency; and, finally, (14) "Mad Dogs" (September 2006), in which five ex-CIA agents confined to a mental hospital (hence, the title) break out after being framed for the murder of their psychiatrist. The book traces their efforts to track down and expose the CIA 'mole' they suspect of having set them up. Books in this collection are not available for individual purchase, sold only as a complete set. All book jackets are in protective covers. All orders are bubble-wrapped and shipped in boxes. Very Good condition. In full, ""Herewith I confirm receipt of your letter of 10 Kislev 5735 - November 24, 1974, fir which I thank you. I have read your serious and important words with much interest. We agree with you: at the moment, there is a need for a government of national unity, and therefore we continue to demand its establishment, for the sake of our people's firm standing against pressure and testing times. The faith in the future of our people, as expressed in your letter, is an important factor in this standing. This is indeed the way to overcome all the problems. Surely, you have noticed that, for now, the majority of the leaders of the Alignment refuse to establish a government of national unity. However, among the public, regardless of their opinions, there is an increasing demand for the special unification. May this yearning bring forth the long-awaited fruit.""Gen. Yitzhak Rabin had replaced Golda Meir as Prime Minister in June 1974. There were two major political groupings in Israel, the coalition dominated by the Labor Party (the Labor Mapai Alignment), and the Likud coalition dominated by Menachem Begin's Herut Party. On May 17, 1977, the Likud Party won the national elections and on June 21, 1977, the first time in Israeli history a party other than the Alignment/Mapai was in a position to form a government. Begin became Prime Minister, serving from 1977-1983.Menachem Begin served in the first ten Israeli Knessets, the ninth and tenth as Prime Minister. When he wrote this letter, he was a member of Knesset 8, in the Likud parliamentary group."

        The Power Broker

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1974. First edition of the author's Pulitzer-Prize winning work on Robert Moses. Thick octavo, original black cloth, cartographic endpapers. Signed by Robert A. Caro on the title page. Small name to the endpaper, near fine in a a near fine price-clipped dust jacket. Dust jacket design by Paul Bacon. A very nice example of this bulky book, which tends to show wear. One of the most acclaimed books of our time, winner of both the Pulitzer and the Francis Parkman prizes, the Power Broker tells the hidden story behind the shaping (and mis-shaping) of twentieth-century New York and makes public what few have known: that Robert Moses was, for almost half a century, the single most powerful man of our time in New York, the shaper not only of the city's politics but of its physical structure and the problems of urban decline that plague us today. "Surely the greatest book ever written about a city." (David Halberstam) Theodore H. White called it "A masterpiece of American reporting. It's more than the story of a tragic figure or the exploration of the unknown politics of our time. It's an elegantly written and enthralling work of art."

        Zehn Kleine Meckerlein.

(Haarlem: Carlinapers, 1974). Tall, narrow octavo. (20)pp. One of forty copies. A reprint of the original 1943 edition, which was also published in a limited edition of forty copies. In this poignant satirical variation on the "Ten Little Indians" nursery rhyme, originating from a German concentration camp during the Holocaust, the "Meckerlein" or "nuisances" are those who oppose the Nazis. They disappear one by one, only to be reunited in the end inside the Oranienburg concentration camp. The pages are printed with bold typography that is oriented vertically across the page spread. Offsetting from printed text, else fine in stiff green wrappers with a tonal pattern and printed paper label. (Bohlman & Holzapfel, The Folk Songs of Ashkenaz, pp. 34-36).
