        Carrie.

New York: Doubleday, 1974. First edition stated on copyright page and "P6" in the gutter of page 199. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Stephen King on the title page. A few small tape remnants to the cloth, near fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of rubbing. A very nice example. Stephen King has been read by more people than any living author, and more than most dead ones. As Don Heron commented in "The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural," King specializes in "contemporary American scenes, everyday parents and kids and teenagers, vulgarly realistic language - a believable setting awaiting the coming of terror." He has become the most popular horror writer of all time. Several adaptations of Carrie have been released, including a 1976 feature film, a 1988 Broadway musical, a 1999 feature film sequel, a 2002 television movie, and a 2013 feature film remake.

Quarto (11 3/4" x 9 1/4") bound in quarter black cloth with gilt lettering to spine over grey cloth with pictorials at heal corner. Illustrated by Alice Wesche. Amerind Foundation Series number 9. First editions. In Casas Grandes the Amerind Foundation has provided the best written, best illustrated and best produced multi-volume work available on Northern American archaeology. The massive publication resulted from fifteen years field and laboratory study of the Joint Casas Grandes Expedition, a cooperative project of the Foundation and the Mexican Instituto Nacional de Antropologia e Historia under the direction of Dr Di Peso. The archaeology and ethnohistory of the great trading center at Paquime (Casas Grandes) is the core of the monograph, the comparative anthropology following Walter Taylor's conjunctive approach, make up the ample medulla and cortex of the work. Di Peso applies the name Chicimecan (from the Chichimecs of Anahuac) to the Indians of the mesoamerican Northern Frontier, and labels local cultural subdivisions by archaeological or ethnographic prefix, such as Anassazi - or Hopi-Chichimecan. Gran Chichimeca is bounded on the south by the tropic of Cancer, the east by the Gulf of Mexico and the 97th meridian, the north by the 38th parallel and the west by the Pacific Ocean and the 124th meridian. Di Peso recognizes both local linguistic and cultural diversity and the related historical development of some cultural items in the subcontinental area. Mesoamerican contacts in Gran Chichimeca mostly involved soft diffusion by means of an Aztec-like puchteca complex - traders and artisans who traveled widely to the northwest exchanging local for foreign produce, for example northern turquoise for southern macaw feathers, but also introducing political, technological, religious and artistic practices. At no time in the historical continuum (in the Casas Grandes zone, 10,000 BC to AD 1821) of the Gran Chichimeca did any one conquest culture affect all the indigenous peoples; and it is equally apparent that not all of the conquest cultures came from the same Mesoamerican hearth. Skeletal remains from 461 recovered burials support the cultural evidence that the Viejo Period population and the Paquimians belonged to the regional Indian breeding population and that the puchtecha contacts resulted in little gene flow. In the 13th century Paquime covered 88 acres and served as trading center for 85,000 square miles. The buildings included 3-7 story apartments (one with 1780 rooms), ranch style house clusters, ceremonial mounds and ball courts, a merchandise mart, public plazas, wells, cisterns, underground water mains and sewers, signal towers, and hillside fortresses. The city was burned in AD 1340. (Journal of Anthropological Research Volume 32, number 2. J N Spuhler).Volume 1: Preceramic-Viejo Periods. Volume 2: Medio Period. Volume 3: Tardo and Espanoles Periods. Bolume 4-8: Casas Grandes Research and Reference Materials to support the first three volumes.Condition:A very good to fine set issued without dust jackets.

FLOW MY TEARS, THE POLICEMAN SAID

Garden City: Doubleday & Company, Inc., 1974.. Octavo. cloth. First edition. "One day in 1988, the nation's top TV star wakes up to find himself unknown. No one has heard of him, there is no record of birth, he has no identification to show the omnipresent police. In Flow My tears, the Policeman Said. (Doubleday, $6.95), Philip K. Dick has written a proficient tale of an America taken over by data banks and bureaucrats. College students and professors have been ruthlessly separated from society, as a former advocate of law-and-order once proposed. In this dark future, all blacks are sterilized after the birth of their first child. By the time the hero finds himself an unperson, blacks are an endangered species, treated much as the whooping crane is today. But the sociological comment is only background; the real problem is whether JasonTaverner is the victim of a plot or a skid-row bum who dreams that he is a TV star. A recommended slide toward solipsism." - E.H. in Psychology Today, June, 1974. 1974 Nebula and 1975 Hugo nominee. Winner of the 1975 John W. Campbell Award. Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-329. Survey of Science Fiction Literature II, pp. 797-801. A fine copy in fine dust jacket. A sharp copy. (#155298)

        Codex Vindobonensis Mexicanus I

Graz: Akademische Druck - u. Verlagsanstalt, 1974 2 volumes. Text volume. 37 pages with facsimiles, figures, tables, four plates (2 in color and one foldout pictorial) and bibliography. Oblong quarto (10" x 12") text bound in original publisher's wrappers. Codex true-color facsimile edition of the hand painted manuscript in possession of the Austrian National Library, Vienna. 52 folded pages folded continuously in PreColumbian screen-fold format. The facsimile and commentary volumes are together presented in a boxed edition with quarter leather spine in gold lettering to spine and brown lettering to cover. Volume 5 of the series Codices Selecti. First edition in this series.Codex Vindobonensis Mexicanus I, counted as the most beautiful and detailed of the hand painted Mixtec books this treasure of ancient Mexico has been in the Vienna National Library (previously the Imperial Library) since 1677. It is a prehispanic Mesoamerican screen-fold manuscript painted on deer-hide, is one of the few pictorial documents to have survived the pre-Conquest period. Although its exact provenience is unknown, originated in the Mixteca, an area of southern Mexico. Other screen-fold manuscripts from the Mixteca survive that are also painted in the "native style," that is, without any trace of European iconographic or stylistic influence even if they were executed soon after the conquest. Codex Vindobonensis Mexicanus I, is presently located in the Nationalbibliothek in Vienna, but its prior history is somewhat obscure. It seems to have arrived in Europe soon after the conquest of Mexico. A Latin inscription on folio 2 verso states that the codex was at one time in the possession of King Manuel I of Portugal, who died in 1521. The inscription suggests that the manuscript had reached Europe prior to the date of the King's death. Whenever it arrived in Europe, the survival of this fragile masterpiece makes it a unique document, for it is the only assuredly Mixtec "ritual-mythological" manuscript. Its importance lies in the fact that had it not survived, it would be difficult to determine the identities and roles of Mixtec deities and the form and content of some Mixtec rituals. Spread to its full length, the codex is about 1350 centimeters long. The manuscript is folded into fifty-two pages of its obverse are painted, and at some time during the its European history, the pages were erroneously numbered from left to right with Arabic numerals. The obverse is correctly read from right to left, that is, from page 52 to page 1, in an unusual vertical pattern provided by red guide lines. Only thirteen pages of the codex reverse were painted in the more common horizontal reading pattern. The obverse and reverse of the codex were painted by different artists, perhaps at different times. The beautifully drawn obverse is concerned with the deities, place signs, and rituals. In his analysis of the less skillfully rendered reverse, Alfonso Caso demonstrated that the thirteen pages provide a brief account of the lineage of Tilantongo, a prominent ruler, a male usually called 8 Deer "Tiger Claw," or more properly "Jaguar Claw."Condition:Texted corners bumped, edges light rubbed. Slip case stained at back hinge else a very good set.

Bagatelles morales. . ridentem dicere verum. Quid vetat? . Horat.London, for sale at Duchesne, Paris, [printed by Paul Vaillant?], 1754. 12mo. Contemporary tanned sheepskin with the coat of arms of the Dukes of Aremberg in gold on both sides, gold-tooled spine.

      - Barbier I, col. 376; ESTC T128700; L. Adams, Coyer and the Enlightenment (1974). First edition of the collected essays of Gabriel-François, abbé Coyer (1707-1782), which had appeared before "sur des feuilles volantes", or pamphlets, as he mentions in his preface. These essays, often criticizing the society of that time, were extremely popular and deal with a variety of subjects: trade, economy, politics, etc., all introduced in a light-hearted way. Some are inspired by works of the Irish writer Jonathan Swift, for example the Découverte de la pierre philosophale (pp. 39-56) and the Découverte de l'isle frivole (pp. 147-226). All these brief works are here united under the title Bagatelles morales, or "Moral trifles". Only the first essay, Le siècle present (pp. 9-38) is published here for the first time. The other essays included are L'année merveilleuse (pp. 57-78), La magie démontrée (pp. 79-108), Plaisir pour le peuple (pp. 109-126), Lettre à un Grand (pp. 109-146), and Lettre à une dame Angloise (pp. 227-249). With the engraved bookplate of the Dukes of Aremberg on paste-down, with their coat of arms and their motto "Christus protector meus"; and with an armorial bookplate on first flyleaf. Slightly browned along the margins, with only a few occasional small spots. Binding rubbed along the extremities. Overall in very good condition.

Odds and Sods (Original poster for the 1974 album)

Track / MCA, London and New York 1974 - Original promotional poster for the 1974 album. In the autumn of 1973, while members of The Who were preparing for the film version of "Tommy," John Entwistle was put in charge of compiling an album to counter the widespread bootlegging of the band's concerts. "I tried to arrange it like a parallel sort of Who career--what single and album tracks we might have released, " Entwistle explained. Two albums' worth of material was compiled, but in 1974 only a single album was released. The second "album's worth" came out on the 1998 remastered CD release. The original album's popular highlight is "Long Live Rock," a staple at the band's live shows. 30 x 20 inches. Rolled, on archival linen. Fine.

Story of cupid and Psyche [Rampant Lions Press]

Rampant Lions Press For Clover Hill Editions, London 1974 - Two volumes plus portfolio. 13.75" x 9.75". One of 130 copies with a portfolio of prints and proofs (there were also 270 copies without portfolios and 100 portfolios separately issued). Numbered and SIGNED by Douglas Cleverdon on limitation page. Introduction by A.R. Dufty. Fine deep blue morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, spines with ochre morocco label, wide gilt turn-ins, the two volumes in fleece lined slipcase covered with blue patterned paper. The folding hardshell portfolio uniform in design with matching morocco spine and label as well as patterned paper sides. Frontispiece in black and grey in each volume, volume I with three woodcut vignettes in text and 26 pages of plates at end, volume 2 with headpiece, one large and many small woodcut initials, and 42 woodcut vignettes in text, designed by Edward Burne-Jones and mostly engraved by William Morris. Portfolio of 13 1/4" x 9 1/12" sheets including 44 sheets with proofs of the woodcuts from the text as well as two not included in text, 47 sheets (one double-page, folded), with reproductions of drawings, and a four-leaf pamphlet with title in black and grey and minature reproductions of the woodcuts. Considered the most ambitious undertaking of the press done for the Clover Hill Editions using the Troy type freshly cast from the original matrices preserved at the Cambridge University Press. The three parts of this work finish in grand style, the work begun in the 1860's by Morris and Burne-Jones on what was to have been-and is now- al lovely illustrated edition of teh author's Cupid and Psyche. More than a century after the project was begun, Rampant Lions has finished the job by producing both the work itself - in what the Carters believed to be its intended form - and, in a second volume, an illustrated history of the production of the work. A more strictly limited third part, the portfolio of extra wood engravings and reproductions fo the original drawings, is a special celebratory deluxe feature. A Fine copy. Size: Folio [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
