        [ANIMAL FARM]

Ferma zhivotnykh [i.e. Animal Farm]. [N.p., 1970s]. Typescript. 61 leaves. 30x21 cm. Owner's cardboard binding. Fine. The first page contains a short biography of George Orwell, taken from Big Soviet Encyclopedia, printed in 1974. Orwell's satire on the totalitarian regime was too candid for Soviet censors, so the author was labeled as 'trotskist' in 1930s and was never published during Soviet era. However it's not widely known that Orwell corresponded briefly with 'Internatsionalnaya literatura' magazine [i.e. International literature], in 1937. The editor-in-chief of the periodical wrote him asking to send his new novel 'The Road to Wigan Pier' to Moscow because periodical was interested in publishing it. Orwell sent the book replying that he could even write something specially for the magazine but also that they should know he recently fought in Spain on the side of POUM, and that led to the abruption of all the contacts with Orwell from Soviet side. From that time on Orwell's name was under taboo in official press, and his books were published only in late 1980s. Animal Farm was first published in USSR in Latvian periodical 'Rodnik' in 1988. Certainly Animal Farm as well as 1984 was too significant and interesting reading material for an ordinary soviet man, the dweller of the actual 'farm', so it's appearance in Samizdat was inevitable. According to Arlen Blum ('Zvezda', #6, 2003) samizdat versions of Animal Farm started to appear in USSR in late 1960s.

[Vernacular Photo Book]. A Day At Boston Common

Boston: s.n., 1974. 9” x 9”. Accordion style binding. 23 pages with 52 black and white photographs and 3 pages of typescript adhesive mounted. Photos measure from 3” x 4” to 4 7/8” x 7 1/4”. Album very good plus with some smudging to covers, photos very good. Preserved in a fine protective case. With uncommon artistry, this engaging "homemade" photo book presents -- as the title indicates -- "A Day at Boston Common" in 1974. Belying the turmoil of the Vietnam War and resignation of Richard Nixon from the office of the Presidency, this photo book presents an unsettingly serene urban landscape. Its highlight is a sequence of photos showing a homeless man moving from a park bench to forage in a trash can, one shot showing his torso in the can, while in the background a couple hug and kiss. The photographer captured scenes of children playing, people laughing, a street bazaar [datable to Oct. 31 - Nov. 3), Hare Krishnas, musicians, another photographer, and several images of what appear to be the elderly homeless. We have been unable to identify the photographer "Bruce Marks" beyond his signature, but his streetwise photographic abilities are noteworthy.

        The Sonnets of William Shakespeare.

Los Angeles:: Zeitlin & Ver Brugge Booksellers, April 1974., 1974. Sm. 8vo. 154 pp. 2 illustrations by Mary Kuper. Original binding by Max J. Adjarian in quarter Levant morocco, decorative paper (designed by the printer), raised bands, gilt spine. Fine copy. LIMITED EDITION--74 of 120 numbered copies. Printed by Saul & Lillian Marks at the Plantin Press, Los Angeles. With wood engravings by Mary Kuper. This is the rarest and most desired hand-printed work from a Southern California printer. It is notoriously rare as it was sold out on publication (Zeitlin bought out the edition and distributed it to private subscribers). It was elegantly designed by Saul Marks (1904-1974) and as a printed book it pleases with the binding, paper and illustrations. Dickover gives Marks a supreme compliment: "Los Angeles has had its share of distinguished printers; and one of them, Saul Marks of the Plantin Press, ranks as one of the greatest of the twentieth century." Some consider this Marks' masterpiece. The book was printed on the Albion Press. Saul was meticulous in his design and craft. He loved the beauty of italic type, which was used for this edition. "The letters beginning each line in the sonnets are roman; and following the typographic practice of Aldus, they are smaller in height than the lower case italic letters with ascenders." Mary Kuper was the Plantin Press's first woman apprentice. She took up wood engraving at the encouragement of Saul.         Pénaltiés de l'Enfer ou Les Nouvelles Hebrides.

Paris Arte Adrien Maeght 1974 - Oblong folio, (29 x 40 cm). No 51 of 200 copies on arches wove paper signed in red crayon by Miro, from a total edition of 220. Title, text and justification on Arches wove paper, 25 lithographs in total (20 colour, 5 black and white), most double-page. Original paper wrappers with first lithograph printed on front, spine and back; set of six lithographs in black by or after the same hand, one with additions in red ball-point pen, in beige paper folder entitled 'documents 1929,' housed in publisher's orange cloth covered box with artist's and author's names on spine. A fine example signed by Miro in red crayon. Both the Spanish artist Joan Miro and the French poet Robert Desnos were prominent figures in the Surrealist movement in Paris, where they met in 1925. Miro had long planned to illustrate a book by Desnos, but the project was delayed by the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, closely followed by the Second World War. Desnos was an active member of the French Resistance; he was arrested by the Gestapo in 1944 and sent to several concentration camps including Auschwitz and Buchenwald. Desnos survived the war only to die of typhoid a few weeks after the liberation of the camp where he was held. Nearly thirty years later, Desnos' widow approached Miro with the idea of illustrating his works again. In the end they settled on Pénalités de L'Enfer ou Les Nouvelles-Hébrides [The Penalties of Hell or The New Hebrides], Desnos' first work in prose, written in Morocco in 1922. Mourlot 959-90; Cramer 188. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Sertum Orchidaceum. A Wreath of the Most Beautiful Orchidaceous Flowers.

New York: Johnson Reprint Corporation. [1974]. Folio. Original green cloth, gilt lettering to upper board; coloured frontispiece and 49 colour plates, each with leaf of descriptive letterpress; very good, near fine internally. Number 106 of limited edition of 1000. A lavish reprint of the scarce 1838 original. One of Lindley's major works, this is distinguished by the illustrations of Sarah Ann Drake (1803-1857), a prolific British artist who started her career as a governess for the Lindley family. Lindley trained her to draw plants from life and by the 1830s she was working not only on his publications but for the journal of Royal Horticultural Society, Edward's Botanical Register and writers such as Nathaniel Wallich and George Bentham. Lindley named the Australian orchid genus Drakaea in her honour, although none of ths genus appear in the present work.
