        Son of Dracula

Blackwood Music, 1974. First edition. Original wrappers. Music from the film bearing the same name. Signed and dated by Ringo Starr, "Love Ringo 05." In near fine condition. Son of Dracula was made during a period when Ringo Starr, in between occasional single releases and session work, was concentrating on film-making and acting. Two movies in which he had starred, 200 Motels and Blindman, had been released at the end of 1971, and before starting on this one, he had just finished work on his directional debut, the T.Rex documentary Born to Boogie. As well as producing Son of Dracula, Starr would appear as Merlin the Magician, who follows the birth and rise of young Count Downe, played by Harry Nilsson.

        Spencerian Bird [Spencerian Penmanship art]

1974 - Original art; a thoroughly stunning example of Spencerian Penmanship art. Crafted by Asao with pitch-black ink on paper. Originally a method of rules for teaching cursive writing to children, "Spencerian Penmanship" was created in the mid-1800's by Platt Rogers Spencer, who grew up admiring the graceful lines of the John Hancock signature on the Declaration of Independence, and his five sons. It stood in contrast to Italian calligraphy [which was developed for speed only] particularly in its capital letters, which were to be accomplished in artful flourishes unique to the writer's style. The writing form has occasionally been taken to its extremes as a beautiful form of graphic art, as in the case of this August, 1974 Spencerian Bird rendering by Shigeo Asao. The Spencerian Bird form is an expression in Spencerian cursive art of a bird-of-paradise-like creature or creatures (three are found in this example), a now famous device because elaborate tail plumage allows full expression of the complex flowing curves of the art form. Examining this opus by Asao, with its minutely tapering threadlines and deep black ink still glistening in places, one has to wonder how it's possible with a human hand. Signed and dated. 7.5" x 11" white paper, loosely matted 14.75" 18.5". Slight creasing, tiny faint brown spot, else fine for both the work and the matting. You'll want to see scans of this. - Jeff Harvey LBB-D

The second book by acclaimed female Japanese photographer Ruiko Yoshida, whose early seventies images of Harlem capture both the time and place with uncanny virtuosity. That this book has remained nearly completely unknown in the West is a testament to the great breadth of postwar Japanese photobooks. Despite numerous references and a torrent of free information online, it is still possible to find gems in the rough. The search continues.

This copy has been signed by the author Betty Grissom, and her two sons (Scott & Mark) on the front endpaper. Betty Grissom is the widow of Gus Grissom, who was scheduled to be the first man on the moon, and instead became a victim of a flash fire in the Apollo Command module. "In this compelling personal account, Betty Grissom and Henry Still chart the progress of the space program from a unique vantage point and take it from its first faltering steps to the successful Apollo moonshots, as seen through the eyes of those most intimately involved with it. Running parallel to this is Betty's progression from a small-town Indiana girl who married her high-school sweetheart to the plaintiff in a ten million damage suit against North American Rockwell , builders of the Apollo Spacecraft."; Signed by Author .

Feather Box. An original construction by Bishop, 17 ¾? wide x 9 15/16? high

Benton 49. ?A comb is a harp strummed by the glance / of a little girl / born dumb.? ? ?Objects and Apparitions.? Bishop?s translation of Octavio Paz?s homage to Joseph Cornell, ?Objetos y Apariciones? appeared in The New Yorker on June 24, 1974, and was one of the last poems to be included in Geography III. Like Paz, Bishop was a great admirer of Joseph Cornell, whose name is now virtually synonymous with this art form. ?Cornell is superb. I first saw the Medici Slot Machine when I was in college. Oh, I loved it. To think one could have bought some of those things then. . . . When I looked at his show in New York two years ago I nearly fainted, because one of my favorite books is a book he liked and used. It?s a little book by an English scientist who wrote for children about soap bubbles [Soap Bubbles; their colours and the forces which mould them, by Sir C. V. Boys, 1889].? ?
