From matrix mechanics and wave mechanics to unified quantum mechanics. Autograph manuscript and typescript signed.

1972 - Van der Waerden, Bartel Leendert (1903-96). From matrix mechanics and wave mechanics to unified quantum mechanics. Autograph manuscript and typescript signed. 26, 10pp. 1972. Approx. 298 x 218 mm. Minor rust stains from paper clips, but very good. The Dutch mathematician B. L. van der Waerden, a colleague of Werner Heisenberg at the University of Leipzig, made important contributions to quantum mechanics, the most significant being his invention in 1929 of spinor calculus "to prove the relativistic invariance of the Dirac equation in the spirit of classic tensor analysis" (Zeidler, Quantum Field Theory III: A Bridge between Mathematicians and Physicists, p. 285). He was also the author of Moderne Algebra (1930), considered to be the most influential textbook on abstract algebra published in the twentieth century. In the above paper van der Waerden described the events in March and April 1926 that led to the merging of matrix mechanics and wave mechanics into a new unified quantum mechanics. Van der Waerden presented the above paper at the symposium on "The Development of the Physicist’s Conception of Nature in the Twentieth Century," held in 1972 in honor of Paul Dirac’s 70th birthday; the paper, along with the discussion that followed, was published the following year on pp. 278-289 of The Physicist’s Conception of Nature (1973), edited by Jagdish Mehra. The manuscript consists of 18 sheets in van der Waerden’s hand augmented with a reproduced typescript transcription of a letter from Wolfgang Pauli to Pascual Jordan written on April 12, 1926; at the end is a typed transcript of the discussion held at the end of van der Waerden’s presentation, heavily edited in Mehra’s hand. Second copy located of an early edition of a small and inexpensive medical guide intended for the poor and therefore both giving advice for a healthy life style and suggesting herbal and other medicines, including many they could prepare themselves, rather than paying a doctor or apothecary. The main text gives recipes for medicines to treat more than 100 ailments, ranging from bad breath to the plague. It is followed by a list about 100 household medicines one can prepare one's self to administer to sick friends and neighbours for various ailments named, and an alphabetical list of about 150 medicines one can buy from an apothecary for various ailments named. "One of the simplest and most popular ... health manuals" (Simon Schama, Embarassment of riches, p. 517). With the corner of 1 leaf cut off, and some even smaller marginal defects, one restored, but still in very good condition. Binding also very good. A remarkably well-preserved copy of an extremely rare edition of a medical handbook for the poor.

snurové projekty. schnurprojekte [string projects]. With text in Czech and German. WITH: Dalibor Chatrný. projekty 2. projects 2. AND: Dalibor Chatrný. fragmenty prostoru. raumfragmente [spatial fragments]

self-published 1972 - Three original printed tan and gray three-panel portfolios, with six, ten, and eleven signed plates on stiff boards, 21 × 15 cm each. Folders signed and numbered by Chatrný. Very good or better. Three portfolios with illustrations of Chatrný's conceptual string installation from the early 1970s, as well as drawings that playfully explore the relationship between line, plane, and space. Each illustration signed by the artist; one portfolio is accompanied by text by the concrete poet and artist Jirí Valoch, a key figure in unofficial and experimental Czech art and poetry of the 1960-70s. Chatrný (1925-2012) began as a graphic artist but turned to experimental materials and conceptual approaches in the 1950s. Surveys of the relationship between two- and three-dimensionality are typical of his work regardless of the medium. One of the most well-known Czech post-war artists of the unofficial scene, whose work is widely held in Czech galleries and abroad. The original string installation was shown at Dum umení (House of Art) in Brno, which was directed by Gerta Pospísilová, a leading figure in Brno independent art in the early 1970s, the first years of the Czechoslovak "Normalization" era. 25 and 50 copies each.         Ventana: Revista Poetica/Revista de Poesía. No. 1 (1972) through No. 13 (1975)

The first 13 issues of the irregularly published Puerto Rican poetry journal, founded by José Luis Vega and under the editorial direction of Vega, Robles Caballero, Pedro J. Domínguez, and Salvador Villanueva, containing poetry, reviews, and editorials from a number of mostly contemporary Puerto Rican writers, including the editors, Juan Antonio Ramos, Jose Antonio Rosado, Rafael Garcia Bidó, Manuel de la Puebla, José A. Encarnación Díaz, Juan Antonio Corretjer, Jose Antonio Rosado Espinosa, Hector Rafael Melendez Ramirez, Francisco Matos Paoli, Charles Rosario, Orlando J. Hernández, Angel Luis Curbelo, and others. Not illustrated. 8vo. Orig. pictorial stapled wrpps. Río Piedras, Puerto Rico 1972-1977. Ventana was highly influential in the literary sphere in 1970's Puerto Rico. According to an essay on Puerto Rican poetry by Emilio Bejel in A History of Literature in the Caribbean, the objectives of Ventana (and the source of its name) were to "open a window onto the world and to avoid the sterility of any one school. Ventana's editorial policy encourages a plurality of forms and themes" (232). The journal emphasized a balance between creative freedom and ideology. In his editor's note from the first issue, Vega writes that Ventana aspires to be a forum for a national poetic dialogue, and invites any Puerto Rican, especially the youth, to contribute. Very scarce; as of June 2017, WorldCat locates only two holdings worldwide and none in North America.

Gedenkwaerdige gesantschappen der Oost-Indische Maetschappy in 't Vereendigde Nederland, aen de Kaisaren van Japan ...Amsterdam, Jacob Meurs, 1669. Folio. With engraved frontispiece, title-page printed in red and black with woodcut decoration, 1 folding map with travel routes in Japan, 20 double-page and 4 larger folding engraved plates, 71 half-page engravings in the text. Contemporary vellum.

Cordier, Japonica, col. 383; Landwehr & V.d. Krogt, VOC 522. True first edition of Montanus's very detailed and thoroughly illustrated account of Japan, containing the first known printed images of the small island of Dejima, in Nagasaki harbour, the Japanese outpost of the VOC (Dutch East India Company), connected to the mainland by a bridge. The title-page notes that the book is based on the manuscripts and notes of the VOC delegations (to the Shogun), and that the illustrations were drawn in Japan. The folding map shows the sea route along the coast from Nagasaki to Osaka and the land route along the coast from Osaka to Yedo (Tokyo). The four folding views show profiles of the cities of Osaka, Miaco (Kyoto), Yedo and Kagoshima. Two views show erupting volcanoes and many show religious and other rituals, temples, torture and fighting, etc.The present first edition isn't mentioned by Tiele. As Isabella van Eeghen already pointed out in 1972, Tiele's entry 762 actually describes a reprint, published ca. 1681, some two years after Meurs's death. The quality of the plates of the reprint is generally rather poor in comparison with the present first edition. Some browning and a few faint waterstains, otherwise in very good condition. The binding also very well-preserved.

WOOD ENGRAVINGS OF ERIC RAVILIOUS [Introduction by J M Richards]

Kensington: The Lion and Unicorn Press, Royal College of Art, 1972. First edition, LIMITED, number 80 of the second issue, which was limited to 500 copies. With 113 leaves displaying over 400 of Eric Ravilious' engravings, each leaf printed one side only, with fold-out index leaves. The title-page, front free-fly and colophon page also decorated with Ravilious engravings. Tall folio, in the original binding by Henry Brooks Ltd. of course gray cloth with a large woodcut block on the upper cover in black, the spine lettered in gilt, decorated endpapers. 19pp., 113 ff., 4 ff. index, 2ff. pp. A fine copy, the boards very slightly bowed and with trivial aging, internally very fine and as new. FIRST EDITION AND AN IMPORTANT CATALOGUE RAISONNÉ OF ENGRAVER ERIC RAVILIOUS AND ARGUABLY THE MOST IMPORTANT WORK OF THE PRESS. Six of the over 420 engravings here were reproduced from Ravilious' original blocks, the others (for which the blocks likely no longer existed) were painstakingly reproduced from other sources, all are in their original size and the collection comprises all of his engraved works which could be found and should be considered as complete as could be made possible. The print work was beautifully done by the Curwen Press on Grosvenor Chater's Basingwerk parchment. Ravilious engraved most of these illustrations for books and other publications. His first commission, in 1926, was to illustrate a novel for Jonathan Cape. He went on to produce work both for large companies such as the Lanston Corporation and the smaller, less commercial "Fine Presses", such as the Golden Cockerel, the Curwen Press and the Cresset Press. A handful of the engravings included here were never previously published. Ravilious' career was cut tragically short when, while working as a War Artist, the RAF patrol he was flying on failed to return. After four days of searching, he and the plane's four crewmen were declared lost in action.
