Bradley, Pat (editor)
Washington DC: Literary Art[s] Program, 1971. Very good. Printed heavy cardboard sleeve containing four bifolia and one poster. Sleeve measures 12½" x 12½"; bifolia (each with four printed pages) slightly smaller; poster (printed both sides) measures 59¾" x 23 5/8".Sleeve good: moderate wear and dust soiling with a couple of heavy creases, four inch separation at foot. Bifolia generally very good with light creases and toning at extremities. Poster very good with light creasing and small separations at intersections. This is the art and literary journal for the District of Columbia Public Schools Literary Arts Program ("LAP") documenting its early efforts at teaching creative writing, graphic design, film making and photography to inner city high school students. Based on the image on the back of the sleeve, all but one of the students who worked on this creation were African American. We tracked down a former teacher in the LAP who told us the program started in 1968 when a teacher at Cardozo High School, David Aaronson, received a grant for an after school program he called "Cardozo Raps." Aaronson then received another grant to expand the program and moved into a rented house at 1310 Vermont Ave NW ("LAP1310" is on the spine of the sleeve), where this item was produced. The program initially taught high school juniors and seniors who traveled to the Vermont house in the afternoons to take creative arts classes for credit. In 1974 LAP was moved to the Lemuel A. Penn Career Development Center where it was combined with vocational classes, a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ackroyd, Peter
The sole UK printing published by The Curiously Strong, London in 1971. According to Ahearn, one of only 200 copies issued. The BOOK is in Fine condition. 15 unnumbered leaves mimeographed in blue ink from typescript printed on rectos only, stapled with black and plum stiff card covers. The author's rare first book, a collection of poetry, edited by Ian Patterson and issued as 'The Curiously Strong v. 4, no. 2, Oct. 31, 1971'. Some homoerotic content. Ackroyd of course would become the famous biographer of the City of London, and his early works are suffused with the lights of the city a remarkable work. He has also been very prolific, publishing poetry, fiction, and non-fiction, and has won many literary prizes. This first book so scarce that his second 'London Lickpenny', is sometimes erroneously cited as his first. The first copy that we have handled with only 4 copies located on COPAC. The book is protected in a transparent archival folder. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

MORRISON, James Douglas:
[1971]. An original Super 8 film, shot by Jim Morrison of his girlfriend, Pamela Courson, in a cemetery in Corsica. Filmed using his Braun Nizo S56 Super 8 Camera during a ten day holiday in May 1971. Archivally preserved, with the original spool retained. The film is 2 minutes and 37 seconds long and has never been shown publicly. It is referenced specifically in Patricia Butler's book Angels Dance and Angels Die: The Tragic Romance of Pamela and Jim Morrison: "The scene cuts to Pamela, slowly walking between an aisle of gravestones. Her head is bowed, and her long red hair shields her face from view for a moment, before she slowly looks up to stare pensively into the camera. A moment later, an extreme close-up of her face, again slightly out of focus, shows Pamela pouting in the direction of Jim, who is operating the camera. It is easy to make out the words she speaks as she tells him, "I don't want to move". So the camera pans away from the uncooperative subject, who changes her mind suddenly and runs back into the camera range, reclaiming the scene by dancing wildly among the gravestones, her hair flashing about her like a flaming banner. All at once, Pamela disappears behind a mausoleum, but Jim anticipates her moves and the camera catches her reappearance, running from behind the marble monument and continuing her wild dance." On the last night of his life, as recorded in 'The Last Days Of Jim Morrison: A rare look into the rock god's journals' in Rolling Stone magazine, 'Jim started threading Super-8 films of their travels in the projector. Pamela said they sang tog … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ruscha, Edward
Deventer, The Netherlands: Octopus Foundation within the Framework of Sonsbeek 71, 1971. First Edition. Near Fine. First edition. From an edition of three-thousand copies, of which approximately only 200 are extant, making this one of the most elusive titles in Ruscha's oeuvre. Bound in original wide rectangle white card covers printed in black, measuring approximately 15" x 4, with top-bound pages with lateral gatefolds opening to create pages 30" in length. Text in Dutch and English. Near Fine with title and author name handwritten on spine in ink, light toning, light soiling and light rubbing. Published in conjunction with the Sonsbeek 71 exhibition in The Netherlands, Ruscha took these images only from bridges, presenting them in a panoramic style reminiscent of his Every Building on the Sunset Strip. Although this book was supposed to have an open edition, available via mail-order, sales were slow and the printer removed and disposed of extra copies from its warehouse.[Attributes: First Edition]

Also laid-in are numerous newspaper clippings relating to O-Hara, with two clippings affixed to the second and third leaves. Charron's written information is on the front flyleaf and a brief note is written after Ashbery's introduction as well as his inscription. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1971. The unclipped jacket shows some light shelfwear and a small closed tear to front panel. Very scarce with Ashbery's inscription. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

MCCULLIN, Donald.
London: Open Gate Books, 1971. Square octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With the dust jacket. A little rubbing to tips, contents clean and unmarked. A near-fine copy in the jacket, with some minor creasing, a little chipping to spine ends, and a few short closed tears to extremities, not price-clipped. First edition, first impression, signed by the author on the title page. This is the uncommon hardback issue of McCullin's most important work. "The Destruction Business is, strictly speaking, a monograph, a retrospective of some of his best-known images and assignments, but his vision is so singular and the sequences so well constructed that it easily makes the grade as a coherent photobook. [and] it is the classic imagery of war in places such as Biafra and Vietnam to which we return. McCullin was one of the bravest of the war photographers covering these conflicts, and always heeded Robert Capa's dictum to get in close. The result, at some cost to himself, was a series of iconic images of war, and which still have a vital role to play in the condemnation of such madness" (Parr & Badger). Parr & Badger II, p. 249. Reinhard Gehlen
Germany: Hase Koeler Verlag, 1971. Der Dienst By Reinhard Gehlen 1st Edition Hardcover. German Language. Signed, Inscribed And Dated By Reinhard Gehlen to General Dean in 1971, The Year Of Publication. Also Includes Two Typed Sheets describing references to Colonel D Later General Dean(e) referred to in the text. Also Includes a typed Index Card with Gehlen's Address presumably in the event that general Dean(e) wished to correspond. Although the book has no dust jacket, it may well be that as an early issue author copy, it did not come with one--though this is speculation--quite often the earliest copies sent to the author don't have them because they haven't been printed up yet. The book is in excellent condition with very slight foxing and very very slight soiling to page blocks. Minutest pressing to bottom spine end. No bumps or tears. The two typed sheets and addressed index card have some tanning and light wear. Reinhard Gehlen and General Deane are the stuff of John Le Carre' Novels. The safe and sanitized history proffered by the likes of Wikipedia, barely begins to scratch the surface of a character like Gehlen, but it does provide a sort of Cliff Notes overview of the man so it is worth a gander. If you are at all interested in this book, then chances are you already know a great deal about Gehlen and possibly even General Deane, enough to know that all sorts of histories have been written about the man and his organization as well as his War and Cold War years. Separating fact from fiction is hard enough historically but is much more so when dealing with Intellige … [Click Below for Full Description]
