Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

New York: Random House 1971 - First edition, first printing. Illustrated by Ralph Steadman. Publisher's quarter-black cloth lettered in metallic silver, over dark gray paper-covered boards, blind-stamped with Steadman's illustration, in the original white pictorial dust jacket designed by Susan Schwaab. Near fine book with some sunning to extremities; dust jacket with a touch of rubbing and with a small crease at the bottom of the front flap, light crease to rear panel, else bright and free of any tears or chips. A near fine and very attractive copy. Originally published in Rolling Stone, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is the author's best known "failed but essentially noble experiment in Gonzo journalism," a literary genre that subjectively blends truth and fiction. The novel tells of the protagonist Raoul Duke and his attorney Dr. Gonzo as they travel on a drug-fueled, wild adventure "into the heart of the American Dream." The plot is loosely based on the author's actual adventures with American attorney and activist Oscar Zeta Acosta and is supplemented with Thompson's reflections on the 1960's counterculture movement. Ralph Steadman's iconic and grotesquely beautiful illustrations animate Thompson's bizarre journey, assisting the reader in picturing the novel's absurd events. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was adapted into a popular film of the same name, starring Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro, in 1998. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Canto y grito mi liberacion (y lloro mis desmadrazgos...)

El Paso, TX: Mictla Publications, 1971. First Edition. Hardcover Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 8-3/4 by 11-1/4 inches. Sánchez's first book, a key collection of poetry from the Chicano Movement. Sánchez spent most of the 1960s in prison where he earned his GED and began writing. He later went on to receive a doctorate and became one of the leading figures in Chicano poetry. Lomelí and Urioste call this book 'An excellent poetic manifesto.' It is also one of the key works of the Chicano Movement. Reprinted several times, this is the only edition in a large format that allows Sanchez's poems to spread out on the page as he intended. Illustrated by Manuel Acosta, with line drawings and two lovely color plates. Reportedly one of 2000 copies, but much scarcer than the print run would suggest. First edition (first printing). A near fine copy in a very good dust jacket. The jacket has some spotting, a common issue with this title. However, the thin paper of the jacket is virtually free of tears. A nice copy of a scarce book.

         Miles Davis at home 1971

New York 1971 - Gelatin silver print (9 x 13 in.). Minor wear. Vintage Barboza stamps on verso, further inscribed by the photographer on the verso: “Miles at home in West 70’s shot in the 70’s Photo by Barboza.” Signed and titled by Barboza beneath the image. In 1971 Barboza received an assignment from Essence to shoot photographs for a story on Miles Davis. The two became friends and frequently worked together. This photograph dates to that first meeting. “When I do a portrait, I’m doing a photograph of how that person feels to me; how I feel about the person, not how they look. I find that in order for the portraits to work, they have to make a mental connection as well as an emotional one. When they do that, I know I have it” (Anthony Barboza). Anthony Barboza (b. 1944) is most famous for photographs of jazz musicians in the 1970s and 1980s. His work has been exhibited in countless solo and group shows and is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Cornell University, the Brooklyn Museum, the Schomburg Center – NYPL, and the National Portrait Gallery, among others. This is a wonderful portrait of Miles Davis, perhaps the greatest figure in American music after World War II, taken at the height of his fame.
