ENGLISH : Prévert - Calder : FÊTES. The original book illustrated with 7 color aquatints, Maeght, Paris 1971. ALEXANDER, PAUL, ARTIST.
25 x 40 cm, signed "p.a. 71" in pencil in the lower left corner and on the verso also in pencil "Paul Alexander / Bolinas - 1971." ¶ A fine watercolor by artist Paul Alexander, who grew up in the East and migrated to Northern California in 1956 at the encouragement of fellow classmates at Black Mountain College who were involved in the emerging San Francisco Renaissance. Alexander's early years in California were peripatetic and classic starving artist. In a response to an inquiry about the painting, Alexander recently wrote: "At the time I was a guest of Joanne & was in the habit of drawing and painting, watercolors: all the time. This watercolor is not a portrait. Joanne sits at a desk/dining table writing - the view out the window is the Bolinas Mesa. It was the early 70's. We were happy to be alive & in good health. This painting is not my actual type. I guess I was drifting from abstraction into observed painting, which is where I am now." Joanne Kyger later wrote about Alexander as an artist: He was "one of the finest artistic energies comprising the culturally engaged painting and literary scene of the San Francisco Renaissance. Familiar to many are the skill of his watercolors - luminous, grounded, grand, classic . . ." From the library of Glenn Todd, who was acquainted with both artist and poet. Matted and framed; inspected out of the frame; fine condition.

Wilson, Bill
1971. Black and white photograph of Alcoholics Anonymous founder Bill Wilson, signed by him. Inscribed, "For __ In memory and thans for a great evening Devotedly Bill." Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 17 inches by 15 inches. William Griffith Wilson also known as Bill Wilson or Bill W., was the co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). AA is an international mutual aid fellowship with about 2 million members worldwide belonging to approximately 10,000 groups, associations, organizations, cooperatives, and fellowships of alcoholics helping other alcoholics achieve and maintain sobriety. Following AA's Twelfth Tradition of anonymity, Wilson is commonly known as "Bill W." or "Bill." In order to communicate among one another, members of "AA" will often ask those who appear to be suffering or having a relapse from alcoholism if they are "friends of Bill". Although this question can be confusing, because "Bill" is a common name, it does provide a means of establishing a rapport with those who are familiar with the saying and in need of help. After Wilson's death in 1971, and amidst much controversy within the fellowship, his full name was included in obituaries by journalists who were unaware of the significance of maintaining anonymity within the organization. Wilson's sobriety from alcohol, which he maintained until his passing, began December 11, 1934. In 1955 Wilson turned over control of AA to a board of trustees. Wilson died of emphysema complicated by pneumonia in 1971. In 1999 Time listed him as "Bill W.: The Healer" in the Time 100: The Most Important P … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Cuba]. Bunke, Tamara
Havana, 1971. Very good.. Five (of eight) issues. [13]-48, [73]-96pp. Lacks issues 1, 5, and 6. Illustrated, printed in red and black. Folio newspaper. Some light soiling and wear, three issues unopened. A special serial newspaper account of the life and Communist exploits of Tamara Bunke, known as "Tania the Guerrilla," who joined the Cuban Revolution and fought with Che Guevara in the jungles of Bolivia. Each issue features a large image of Tania's face from a famous photograph taken in 1962 after she joined the Cuban People's Defence Militia. The first issue here, dated November 22, 1970, is titled, "The First Watchwords," and includes numerous photographs of Tania from her time in Cuba. Issues two through four focus on Cuba, while issues seven and eight concern her time in Bolivia. The final issue, which is dated January 3, 1971, recounts her death, shot in the jungle of Bolivia and her body swept away down river. It closes with several paragraphs in praise of Tania and her efforts: "That graceful Argentine girl with the Buenos Aires accent, Russian first name and far-reaching and universal glance...that girl with the blue blouse of the Free German Youth and the uniform of the Revolutionary Militia in Cuba continued firmly down the road of a young revolutionary, a fighter from the new generation. She felt herself to be, above all, a daughter of Latin America, and she was absolutely determined to participate in the revolutionary struggle against U.S. imperialism and for the liberation of the oppressed peoples of Latin America. ... She fought together with CHE, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Powell, William
Lyle Stuart, Secaucus New Jersey. Lyle Stuart. Secaucus, New Jersey. 1979 (1971). 160 pages. First edition, 18th printing. $12.00 price intact on DJ flap however it has been covered with a Lyle Stuart price sticker that says $16.00. The $12.00 is still visible underneath the publisher's new price sticker. This is an early hardcover edition in original DJ of the HUGELY controversial book that has earned its own documentary on Netflix. The author ultimately denounced the book many years after writing it. The only publisher willing to publish the book in 1971 was controversial publisher Lyle Stuart; no stranger to controversy himself. Collectible hardcover copies from original publisher are not easy to come by; especially in DJ. As for this copy, Black panels are bright and clean; as is red title on backstrip. Binding and hinges are strong and sound. Pages lay tight. Endpapers are bright and clean with exception of some old tape residue on endpaper edge (from old DJ protector with scotch tape). Easily neutralized with paper conservator. That corner of endpaper sticks ever so slightly to mylar DJ protector when closed; but separates at will without incidence; but noted for condition report. Original DJ is bright and attractive. Tiny touch of shelf-rubbing to edges at foot and crown. Rear of DJ shows light, faint handling. All flaws are noted. A most collectible title and desirable Lyle Stuart printing. A notorious title for any rare book collectors of banned/challenged books. Also laid in is a large, lengthy original obituary from the LA Times of William Powell. Obituary is in … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sanchez, Ricardo
Mictla Publications, El Paso, TX, 1971. 8-3/4 by 11-1/4 inches. Sánchez's first book, a key collection of poetry from the Chicano Movement. Sánchez spent most of the 1960s in prison where he earned his GED and began writing. He later went on to receive a doctorate and became one of the leading figures in Chicano poetry. Lomelí and Urioste call this book "An excellent poetic manifesto." It is also one of the key works of the Chicano Movement. Reprinted several times, this is the only edition in a large format that allows Sanchez's poems to spread out on the page as he intended. Illustrated by Manuel Acosta, with line drawings and two lovely color plates. Reportedly one of 2000 copies, but much scarcer than the print run would suggest. First edition (first printing). A very good copy in a good dust jacket with a four-inch tear repaired with Japanese tissue. With a wonderful inscription to a radical poet of an earlier generation: "Para Walter Lowenfels--more than an equitable society, mon frere, is the need for a humanistic affirmation. Viva La Causa y que brote la hermandad. Ricardo Sanchez 5/23/72." A very nice association copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]
