John Baldessari, Dicembre 1971

Manuscript Document Signed, oblong 8vo, New York, April 4, 1972

      - This is a scarce check made out to Monk on the account of the Hometown Music Company, Jackson Heights, N.Y. for a "royalty advance" of $18.50. Signed on verso, "T. Monk." "T" is light but clear and vertical middle fold is prominent. The check is signed by the music company's owner, Sid Prosen. By the time Monk signed this check, he was nearing retirement and had limited his recordings and performances. Widely considered one of the most important musicians in jazz, Monk had a unique improvisational style and made numerous contributions to the standard jazz repertoire (including his classic works "Round Midnight" and "Blue Moon"). He is often regarded as a founder of bebop.
