        Watership Down

New York: Macmillan Publishing Co., Inc., 1972.. New York: Macmillan Publishing Co., Inc., 1972. First American edition of the author's first and most beloved work. Octavo, original half cloth. Signed by the author on the title page. Near fine in an excellent near fine dust jacket with light wear. Although Watership Down was rejected by 13 publishers before Collings accepted it, it has never been out of print, and is Penguin Books' best-selling novel of all time. It won both the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian Prize. The title refers to a hill in the north of Hampshire, England, near the area where Adams grew up. The story has its roots in the tales that Richard Adams made up for his young daughters during long car journeys. As he explained in 2007 in an interview with the BBC, he "began telling the story of the rabbits . . . improvised off the top of my head, as we were driving along." He based the struggles of the animals on the struggles he and his friends encountered during the Battle of Oosterbeek in 1944. The daughters insisted he write it down—"they were very, very persistent." After some delay he began writing in the evenings and completed it 18 months later.

        Femmes / Hombres

London: Douglas Cleverdon, [1972.]. London: Douglas Cleverdon,, [1972.]. Oblong folio. 15 numbered and signed loose etchings (408 x 281 mm) on white japon contained within green quarter morocco portfolio with green-grey boards and black card flaps, printed label to front board. A fine set of prints in an excellent portfolio with somewhat rubbed spine ends and board edges, a few small scuff marks and stains to front board, a light dampstain to rear board, and splits to head and tail of fore edge flap fold. Sole edition. These etchings by Ayrton (1921-1975) were intended to accompany the first English-language edition of Verlaine's (1844-1896) two companion volumes of erotic poetry, Femmes (1891) and Hombres (1903; posthumously). While originally published as separate works, by the two Paris-based publishers Vanier and A. Messein respectively, they should be seen as two parts of a larger whole, 'both unbridled in their appeal to the prurient' (Shapiro, One Hundred and One Poems by Paul Verlaine, p.147).

Gesigneerd 'Hugo Claus' en niet gedateerd. 12 regels tekst. Twee perforatiegaatjes. 6. 10,6 x 14,0 cm. Eén blad. Alleen recto.

        WATERSHIP DOWN

Collings , 1972. Collings , 1972. First edition. Original brown cloth with gilt titles and rabbit vignette to upper cover, in brown pictorial dustwrapper. A near fine copy in a fine (price clipped) dustwrapper. Unusually tight and crisp with very faint offsetting marks from tape to the endpapers. Colour folding map at rear. The author's first book, printed in an edition of only 2000 copies by an obscure publisher due to the fact that, rather like Wind in the Willows some 64 years before hand, the publishers approached by the author considered a long and complex anthropomorphic tale would appeal neither to children nor adults. Needless to say, like Kenneth Graham's earlier tale, the book has become a much loved book in both genres and is one of the classics of children's literature.

        Anne Carroll Moore. A Biography

New York: Atheneum, 1972. New York: Atheneum,, 1972. Octavo. Original white cloth backed red boards, titles gilt to spine, top edge dyed yellow, yellow endpapers. With the dust jacket. Plates illustrated with photographs. Slight tanning to spine ends, minor surface tear to front pastedown from removed bookplate, an excellent copy in the price-clipped jacket, somewhat spine tanned, small chips to ends and corners. First edition, first printing, of this biography of Anne Carroll Moore (1871-1961), American author, educator and advocate for Children's Libraries. This is a wonderful presentation copy inscribed to Julia Carter, the first full time children's librarian at the New York Public Library. Sayers's inscription, to the front free endpaper, is very fullsome: "This book is for Julia Carter, who gave most generously to its making - in "remembrance of things past" - with gratitude and warm affection, Frances Clarke Sayers, The Ojai - California, Summer 1972". Julia Carter (who is quoted at length in this book, regarding her debt to Sayers's teaching) was also the first national president of the Division of Library Work with Children and Young People of the American Library Association. She presented the first ever Caldecott Medal in 1938. The author Frances Clarke Sayers was also a significant children's librarian and children's book author. A magnificent tripartite association between passionately influential ladies in American 20th-century Children's Literature. This copy also includes a wonderful archive of friendship and correspondence, with twelve autograph letters signed (some running to numerous pages, one of which a beautifully illustrated card) from Moore to Carter, as well as a signed photograph of Moore in graduating robes of the University of California, and a small pamphlet of the "Children's Books of yesterday, an Exhibition from many Countries" exhibition at the New York Public Library, 1933, written and curated by Moore.

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1972 New York: Simon and Schuster, 1972. First Edition. First Edition. Association copy, inscribed by Houseman to legendary screenwriter Anita Loos: "For Anita Loos, who set me right about certain facts / Gratefully / John Houseman." Ms. Loos tiny red ownership stamp also appears at the bottom of the second blank. The first volume of the legendary producer-actor Houseman's memoirs, covering the years 1902-1942. Houseman began his career as a key member of Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre (his name used to appear on Mercury Theatre letterhead), and went on to produce some of the most significant films of the 1940s and 1950s, including "Citizen Kane" (1941), "The Blue Dahlia" (1946), "Letter from an Unknown Woman," (1948), "They Live by Night" (1948), "On Dangerous Ground" (1952), and "The Bad and the Beautiful" (1952). In 1973, Houseman made an unexpected switch to acting in "The Paper Chase," and would never return to producing, instead choosing to work as an actor for his remaining fifteen years. Anita Loos was one of Hollywood's most prolific and successful screenwriters, one of the founders of the art, whose many accomplishments include "Intolerance" (1916), "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" (1928 and 1953, both versions based on her novel), and "The Women" (1939). She also wrote, along with John Emerson, two of the earliest texts on the art of screenwriting, "How to Write Photo Plays" (1920) and "Breaking into Movies" (1921). A superb association between two of Hollywood's most significant contributors. Near Fine in a Very Good dust jacket.         A TECHNICAL CATALOG OF COMPUTER HALFTONES

Pasadena: Baxter Art Gallery, 1972. Pasadena: Baxter Art Gallery, 1972. First Edition. Wraps. Very good. Side-stapled 4to. Additionally tape-bound, as issued. Limited edition, one of 100 numbered copies SIGNED by Dewar, this #97. Very good with some rubbing to wraps. Small spot of soil front cover/ to front cover. Bit of splitting to tape binding, but otherwise entirely sound with staples firmly holding. [20], versos only, plus title page and covers. While experiments in computer art existed since the late 1950s, and only grew in influence throughout the 60s, our research strongly suggests that Dewar's A TECHNICAL CATALOG OF COMPUTER HALFTONES should almost certainly be termed the earliest digital artist's book. Though catalogues of computer art exhibitions (EAT, 1971's Computer and Arte) featuring multiple artists certainly predate, as does Max Bense's landmark periodical ROT and Beryl Korot and Phyllis Gershuny's RADICAL SOFTWARE, as well as the work of groups like Britain's Computer Arts Society, none engendered what could be properly termed an artists' book. Nelson Howe, Steve and Roger Hesterman's landmark JOB ART predates, but was a collaborative effort. And though this book was produced in conjunction with an exhibition held at the California Institute of Technology from April 27th-June 10th 1972, this is the first editioned publication we're aware of both generated by computer and produced by a single artist that also, as Joanna Drucker has described, "[is] created as an original work of art [...] [and] integrates the formal means of its realization and production with its thematic or aesthetic issues." Includes 20 reproductions of the nascent genre of computer assisted illustration (including one full-color digital photo), each accompanied by Dewar's carefully detailed description of techniques used -- lending the entire production a certain conceptual air. With its experiments in computer photography included as well, a pioneering digital photobook as well. Rare. OCLC locates just two holdings, one at MOMA and the other as part of the larger YLEM archive at Stanford. An important but largely undiscovered and almost completely undocumented book.

        Learning from Las Vegas

Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 1972.. Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 1972. First edition of this ground breaking work. Folio, original blue cloth with illustrated frontispiece. Fine in the glassine dust jacket with some light wear. Signed by both Robert Venturi (who has added a drawing of Venturi's Mother's House) and Denise Scott Brown. A very nice copy. Their insight and analysis, reasoned back through the history of style and symbolism and forward to the recognition of a new kind of building that responds directly to speed, mobility, the superhighway and changing life styles, is the kind of art history and theory that is rarely produced. The rapid evolution of modern architecture from Le Corbusier to Brazil to Miami to the roadside motel in a brief 40-year span, with all the behavioral esthetics involved, is something neither architect nor historian has deigned to notice" (The New York Times).

        Existential Errands

Boston: Little Brown, 1972. Boston: Little Brown, 1972. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine Condition/Very Good. First Edition. Hardcover. Surface marks to jacket and a slight paper adhesion on the rear panel, short tears to jacket at spine ends, still attractive and very good. Faint wear and discoloration to book edges.& & Inscribed by Mailer "To Buzz and Carol These were the years, hey gang? Love Norman May '72". Buzz and Carol Farbar were longtime friends of Mailer's from the publishing business - Buzz was involved in Mailer's three movies (Maidstone, Wild 90 and Beyond the Law), playing Buzz Cameo in the improvised gangster film "Wild 90" which is the subject of the essay "Some Dirt in the Talk" in this collection. Years later Buzz was arrested in a sting operation trying to buy a kilo of cocaine (actually a harmless white powder being shopped by an undercover agent). In return for a promise of a radically reduced sentence, Buzz was convinced to wear a wire to a lunch at Armando's in Brooklyn with Mailer where he would get Norman to admit that he was the money guy in an international hashish ring run by Mailer's onetime associate Richard Stratton. It didn't work out and Buzz was given no a harsh 6 year sentence. His wife Carol divorced him in 1985 and he ended up tragically committing suicide after being released from prison. Needless to say, rumors about Mailer's involvement in the drug smuggling and in Buzz's silence on the matter have made the rounds over the years. A terrific association with a close associate and one of the more puzzling episodes in one of the great literary lives of the 20th century. Size: Octavo (8vo). Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. Category: Essays & Literary Criticism; Signed by Author. Inventory No: 043587.

        Watership Down

London: Rex Collings, 1972.. London: Rex Collings, 1972. First edition of the author's first and most beloved work. Octavo, original brown cloth. Signed by the author "Yours sincerely Richard Adams" on the title page. Laid in is a letter from Richard Adams assistant. Near fine in an excellent near fine dust jacket with light shelf wear. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A very sharp copy. As he explained in 2007 in an interview with the BBC, he "began telling the story of the rabbits ... improvised off the top of my head, as we were driving along." He based the struggles of the animals on the struggles he and his friends encountered during the Battle of Oosterbeek in 1944. The daughters insisted he write it down—"they were very, very persistent." After some delay he began writing in the evenings and completed it 18 months later.
