        The Vision of Wat Tyler

Boughton Monchelsea: Ebenezer Press. 1972. Limited Edition. Hardcover. This private press book uses a large and unusual format, a specially designed half uncial letterform throughout and contains 16 original etchings, hand printed from 33 plates, with each etching signed in pencil by the artist. These are mounted on 16 loosely inserted text sheets of full imperial (31 x 22.5 inches) De Wint paper, handmade and specially hot-pressed by Barcham Greens of Hayle Mill. There is a booklet included which contains the poet's introduction and notes and also the texts of the 6 contemporary letters of John Ball 'Mad Priest of Kent' together with technical notes. This is printed on separate De Wint sheets and loosely inserted. The whole is preserved in in thick wooden boards bound by Bert Seth in full reverse hide with marbled endpapers by the artist. The title block is branded on the upper cover and the complete book is retained in a dark brown hessian wrapper (now slightly faded) with leather ties. This is No.4 of 75 copies signed by the author. Heavy item, may incur additional shipping costs for international delivery., Graham Clarke, artist, author, illustrator and humorist, is one of Britain's most popular and best-selling printmakers. He has created some five hundred images of English rural life and history and of the Englishman's view of Europe. The famous 'arched top' etchings, with which Graham Clarke established a widely successful reputation in Britain and overseas, came to public attention in 1973 when the first of these, Dance by the Light of the Moon, was exhibited in London at the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Show, and sold out. He was educated at Beckenham Art School, where he fell under the spell of Samuel Palmer's romantic and visionary view of the Shoreham countryside. At the Royal College of Art he specialised in illustration and printmaking, and pursued his interest in calligraphy. With encouragement from Edward Bawden, Clarke began refining an individual aesthetic, printing traditional landscapes marked by a sense of locality and genre. Examples of his work are held by Royal and public collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the British Museum, the Tate Gallery and the National Library of Scotland in the United Kingdom, as well as by Trinity College, Dublin, the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., the New York Public Library and the Hiroshima Peace Museum. , Elephant Folio 23" tall .

Power to the People. The Political Thoughts of John Lennon.

London: New English Library, 1972 - Quarto. Original green wrappers, titles to front cover in black. With the dust jacket. Book near fine, over-sized dust jacket lightly creased to edges. Many full page illustrations throughout. Proof of first edition, first impression. Publisher's stamp to the verso of the dust jacket states "Publication date 20 Apr 1972". This book was never published on that day or any subsequent day. The Emory University library, Atlanta, have a copy without the dust jacket and their website states "what we have is one of ca. 60 proof copies of a work that was never actually published. Why it was never published is not known for sure . it is possible that Lennon put a stop to it as he felt that the release of such a work would jeopardize his US green card application and did not give his permission for the final publication". In 1972, Lennon and Yoko Ono had been living in New York for a year, and they wanted to stay. But it happened also to be the year President Nixon was running for re-election. Opposition to the Vietnam War had reached a peak, and Lennon and Ono often showed up at antiwar rallies to sing "Give Peace a Chance" — and to tell their fans that the best way to give peace a chance was to vote against Nixon. The Nixon administration said Lennon had been admitted to the country improperly. He had pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of cannabis possession in London in 1968, and immigration law at the time banned the admission of anyone convicted of any drug offence. But unlike most migrants who have problems with their legal status, Lennon and Ono had powerful friends who petitioned the Immigration and Naturalization Service on their behalf. This copy comes with a note on Granada Publishing Limited notepaper "The compiler of this little opportunist book which was never published! Peter Haining Editorial Director NEL".         Shashin yo Sayonara / Bye, Bye Photography, Dear

Tokyo: Shashin Hyoron-sha (1972) - First Edition. Small quarto. SIGNED by Moriyama in Japanese and English. The photographer's third book: a masterpiece of Japanese photography, and the book that best illustrates the conceptual ideals and vision of the Provoke photographers. Here Moriyama pushes the boundaries of the medium: assembling images from a variety of sources, placing them in a tumultuous and discordant anti-sequence, and assaulting the viewer with full-page grainy, blurry, and sometimes indecipherable pictures. (Parr / Badger, v1, 298; Roth 218; Open Book 290; Auer 543). Light inevitable creases at the spine, faint hint of the endemic separation at the text block, a near fine copy in wrappers in a near fine jacket with a tiny stain barely visible at the head of the spine. Very nice copy overall. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Twelve Cards

London: Lorrimer,, [1972]. Twelve colour pictorial cards loosely inserted in the original printed card folder. Cards in excellent condition, folder rubbed and creased. First edition, first impression. Inscribed by the author to the novelist Alexander Trocchi on the front of the card folder, "For Alex from Christopher". The two writers met in Paris during the early 1950s, when Logue joined the staff of Trocchi's literary magazine Merlin, and Logue later wrote that, "Between 1952 and 1955 I saw Alex, as he was to me, several times a week; but in the twenty-eight years following his departure from Paris until his death in 1984 we met no more than fifteen times, seldom alone, and twice in police courts". He recalled how Trocchi "had befriended me, published me, persuaded others to publish me, had helped to curtail my suicidal urge, overseen the publication of my first book, and borne with my so-called love affairs" (A Life in Pieces: Reflections on Alexander Trocchi).

        Marine' (Lithograph from 'Poésies Antillaises')

Mourlot., Paris 1972 - (Duthuit, Catalogue Raisonne des Ouvrages Illustrés, 37.)An original lithograph drawn by Matisse for 'Poésies Antillaises'. The lithographs were drawn circa 1945 but posthumously printed and published in Paris in 1972 by Mourlot. Printed on Velin d'arches filigrane paper in a limited edition of 250 copies. (There was also a dulux edition of 50 copies with an extra suite of prints printed on japon.) As this lithograph was printed as part of a book, there is a line of text on the reverse of the sheet, this can not be seen from the front of the image. In excellent condition. Sheet size 383cm x 292mm (13 x 8.5 inches)In 1945, following the success of the series of lithographs that he had drawn, inspired by Reverdy’s poetry under the title 'Visages', Matisse began working with several exotic models for the illustrations of an ambitious suite of lithographs that he hoped to do in homage to his friend, the poet John-Antoine Nau.Nau’s poetry took its themes from voyages in the Antilles and in particular to Martinique where the facial sculpture of women from the Islands, with their exoticism and richness, was a great inspiration. Matisse first met him with Signac many years before in 1905, and had great admiration for his poetry.Matisse completed and proofed all the stones for the Poésies Antillaises series in 1945/46. However for some reason the actual edition of the album was never pulled at that time. The work was finally published 18 years later by Mourlot, who scrupulously followed both Matisse's maquettes and final corrected proofs. [Attributes: First Edition]
