The Baur Collection, Geneva, Chinese Ceramics Volume Three: Monochrome-Glazed Porcelains of the Ch'ing Dynasty

Collections Baur-Genève, Switzerland, 1972 Book. Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. English and French text; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket); 24 x 29.3 cm; 2.252 Kg; 22 pages of text plus black and white and colour illustrations each with caption; Limited edition of 1000 copies of which this is number 188..; Signs of wear in the dust jacket, with some yellowing on spine and some peeling of the laminated layer of the dust jacket on the top and bottom of the spine and also on the top of the front and back cover. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover. The outside text block shows some yellowing. The interior is in very good condition, apart from an old bookseller sticker glued to the front free endpaper and a tiny mark on the bottom right of one page (bent in the past).; When the Baur Collection museum opened in 1964, few people were aware that this private museum housed one of the most important collections of Chinese ceramics in Europe."In these last two volumes of the catalogue therefore our scope will be found limited almost entirely to wares produced during the reigns of K'ang Hsi (1662-1722), Yung Chêng (1723-1735), and Ch'in Lung (1736-1795). But few periods have been more prolific in invention: and to all lovers of Chinese porcelain these are familiar and evocative names calling to mind a succession of styles of unusual brilliance.(.) The present volume is devoted exclusively to the porcelains with monochrome glazes. (.) Their representation in the Baur Collection is one of quite exceptional richness and strengh. Shown here (with relatively few lacunae) is the full gamut of tones and colours that the 18th century potters of the Ching-tê-chên were able to devise, while some of the rarest and most prized effects are present in generous measure. Outstanding among the latter are the "peachbloom" pinks, pale "clair-de-lune" blues and muchfavoured soft celadon greens, the development of which seems to belong especially to the period about 1715-1745. This part of the collection may therefore be said to offer much of unusual value both to the student, and to the casual visitor." excerpt from the introduction by John Ayers, Keeper at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, 1972..

        G: A Novel.

London: Weidenfeld and Nicolson, 1972. First edition of the author's Booker Prize winning novel. Octavo, original cloth. Fine in an excellent near fine dust jacket with a few small closed tears. The dust jacket spine is bright and attractive. Signed by John Berger on the title page. John Berger relates the story of "G.," a young man forging an energetic sexual career in Europe during the early years of this century. With profound compassion, Berger explores the hearts and minds of both men and women, and what happens during sex, to reveal the conditions of the Don Juan's success: his essential loneliness, the quiet cumulation in each of his sexual experiences of all of those that precede it, the tenderness that infuses even the briefest of his encounters, and the way women experience their own extraordinariness through their moments with him. All of this Berger sets against the turbulent backdrop of Garibaldi and the failed revolution of Milanese workers in 1898, the Boer War, and the first flight across the Alps, making G. a brilliant novel about the search for intimacy in history's private moments.

Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator.

Alfred A. Knopf, New York 1972 - First edition. Octavo, original half cloth. Boldly signed by Roald Dahl on the front free endpaper. An excellent example with some of the usual fading to the cloth in a fine dust jacket. Picking right up where Charlie and the Chocolate Factory left off, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator continues the adventures of Charlie Bucket, his family, and Willy Wonka, the eccentric candy maker. As the book begins, our heroes are shooting into the sky in a glass elevator, headed for destinations unknown. What follows is exactly the kind of high-spirited magical madness and mayhem we've all come to expect from Willy Wonka and his creator Roald Dahl. The American space race gets a send-up, as does the President, and Charlie's family gets a second chance at childhood. Throw in the Vermicious Knids, Gnoolies, and Minusland and we once again witness pure genius. "A delightfuly marvelous story bound to enchant all Willy Wonka fans" (Telegraph).         Archive of photographs featuring Rock performers, circa 1967-1972

N.p.: N.p., 1972. Archive of 41 black and white, double weight photgraphs, taken at various concert in the late 1960s and early 1970s, most apparently unpublished, by noted photographer Michael Montfort, several with stamps of German magazine "Stern" and credit for Montfort on the verso. The archive primarily consists of images of rock acts, both on and off stage, but also includes a number of shots of concert crowds, street photographs, and other non-famous individuals. From the estate of Michael Montfort. Highlights from the archive include images of Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Joan Baez on stage. In addition, a number of more obscure bands are prominently featured in the archive, including Hardin and York, Rory Gallagher's debut band Taste, and Jerry Goodman and the Flock, making the archive overall a well rounded portrait of the late-1960s rock scene and not simply a survey of its best known acts. Giving further context to the archive are photographs of concert crowds, squatters, hippies on the street, and, most strikingly, a small series of photos of a young woman injecting herself with heroin. Born in Freiburg, Germany, Michael Montfort began his career working as a photojournalist for German magazines such as "Stern," "Quick," and "Bild am Sonntag." In addition to shooting numerous rock and jazz performances, he covered Queen Elizabeth's 1965 visit to Germany, the aftermath of the Six Day War in Israel and Egypt, and the May 1968 protests in Paris. Montfort emigrated to Los Angeles in 1973 and began working as a freelancer. Four years later, on assignment for the German literary magazine "Rogners," Montfort was sent to photograph Charles Bukowski. Aided by the case of wine he smartly brought with him to their first meeting, Montfort connected with the publicity-shy and splenetic poet. Over the next two decades, as both Bukowski's drinking buddy and personal photographer, he shot literary thousands of images of Bukowski and collaborated with him on titles such as "Horsemeat," "Shakespeare Never Did This," and "The Wedding." In addition to Bukowski, Montfort shot notable photographs of luminaries such as William S. Burroughs, Klaus Kinski, Brigitte Bardot, and a Jackson 5 era Michael Jackson. Photographs various sizes, with most being between roughly 11.5 x 8.5 inches (29.25 x 21.5 cm), and roughly 15.75 x 11.75 inches (40 x 30 cm). Near Fine or better overall.         Zone

Dublin / London: The Dolmen Press / Calder & Boyars, 1972. First edition. Hardbound. Folio. Original black morocco-backed cloth boards, title stamped in blind on front cover, gilt-lettered on spine; publisher's slipcase with title embossed in blind (light wear to slipcase). LIMITED EDITION, number 211 of 250 numbered copies SIGNED BY BECKETT. "'Zone,' the central poem in Apollinaire's career, prefaces his collection Alcools … The poet was thirty-three years old, the age of Dante embarking on his tour of the afterlife. The poem doesn't so much praise its objects of futurist desire-the Eiffel Tower, airplanes, a railway terminal-as treat them like pastoral motifs. The heart of the poem is not in the future at all but in a past recollected in anxiety and sadness" (David Lehman).

        Soundings no. 1 - 8

Danville 1972 - Ed. Peter Garland (and John Bischoff, first issue only). 4to. (two issues oblong quarto). Wrps., 80pp.-238pp. Staple bound (#1-2) and perfect bound (#3-8). Illustrated with scores, diagrams, manuscripts and photographs. The first eight issues of this important publication (two of them double), founded by composer Peter Garland after attending a publishing workshop with Dick Higgins at CalArts in November 1970: "Soundings arose from a feeling that the work of musicians needed a much wider circulation than that afforded by current publications part of the current lure of the music of other cultures lies in the static nature of the art; the example of a sarangi or rebab player who has devoted a lifetime to the interpretation of a very old music can be just as inspiring as the traditional image of the Western composer, forever pushing forward into unexplored territory.         Solaris (Original Russian poster for the 1972 film)

Moscow: Creative Unit of Writers, 1972. Original Russian poster for the seminal 1972 science fiction film. This is the export variant, with text in English. Often cited as one of the most important films in the history of cinematography, "Solaris" is a meditative psychological drama occurring mostly aboard a space station orbiting the fictional planet Solaris. The scientific mission has stalled out because the meager skeleton crew of three scientists have fallen into separate emotional crises, and the gaseous planet below them is beginning to look like the main suspect. An open ended and conceptually faithful adaptation of Lem's novel, concerning itself with the inability of the human species to communicate with other intelligent life forms, based simply on the fact that a more advanced life form would exist outside the sphere of human experience and understanding. 44.5 x 36 inches (113 x 91.5 cm). Rolled, on archival linen. Discreet restoration, else about Fine. Criterion Collection 164.
