        The Best and the Brightest

New York: Random House, 1972. First edition of the author's magnum opus. Octavo, original blue cloth. Signed by David Halberstam on the title page. Near fine in a very good price-clipped dust jacket. "The Best and the Brightest, Pulitzer Prize winner David Halberstam's most important and impressive book, sets out to discover why America got involved in the worst and messiest war in our history. ‘What was it about the men, their attitudes, the country, its institutions and above all the era which had allowed this tragedy to take place?' They were, after all, ‘the best and the brightest,' so why did it happen? It happened, Halberstam concludes, because, ‘they had, for all their brilliance and hubris and sense of themselves, been unwilling to look and learn from the past." In 1992, looking back over 20 years to this first publication of The Best and the Brightest, "Halberstam noted that the book's title had entered the language, but not quite as he had hoped. ‘It is often misused,' he wrote, ‘failing to carry the tone or irony that the original intended" (New York Times).

Teenage Styles and Trends. 1967-71. A Retrospect.

Privately published by the author 1972. First edition. Limited to 300 copies., Lucerne, Switzerland - Illustrated glossy boards, no dust jacket as issued. Unpaginated [82 pages]. 63 full-page b&w photographic plates. .7kg. English. Near fine; a slight crease to the top corner of the rear board, otherwise in excellent condition with original brown paper wrapping, which has a few tears. 'A person is only old when he has lost his interest in young people.' Teenage Styles and Trends was written, illustrated and published by Burton Yost Berry, a retired American diplomat and art collector, whilst he was living in Zurich. The book is filled with Berry's photographs of young people, mostly boys, taken on the streets of the World's cosmopolitan cities - New York, London, Zurich, Istanbul, Beirut, Amsterdam and Venice. In one respect it is an outstanding example of early street style photography. The aim of Berry's images and text is to capture the "in" crowd, at the "in" places, wearing the "in" trends. In another respect it is an ode to the beauty and freedom of youth; a homoerotic appreciation of the young boy, personified in the final (and only) image of a naked youth. Published in an edition of only 300 copies Berry's book is extremely rare and is highly collectable as both a fashion document and a gay photobook. [Parr & Badger. The Photobook: A History Volume III. p.77, 80] Beaux Books specialises in vintage, collectable and luxury books on art, design, fashion and style. All our books are in stock unless otherwise stated. The second story, part two, The Little Sand Crab starts on the last page of the first and cleverly the reader goes backwards through the book to complete the second story, which ends on the first page of the previous story. To quote the D'Ambrosio " In ANAKED, one, printed on the Adana press, I wrote two separate stories sandwiched between the beginning and the end of a third story. The word 'ANAKED is a composite of " ankh" and "naked," pronounced Ah-nah-ked. First, the reader finds the story of Anaked. The story is written in a manner which allows the reader to assume that it has ended. Then the second story. Emily and Oscar, appears. At the conclusion of Emily and Oscar, and the apparent end of the book, the reader finds on the very last page, the title page for yet another story, The Little Sand Crab. And since I bound the book in an accordion fashion, by continuing to turn the pages, the story unfolds." Readers had asked the author/artist for art to hand on their walls, all the serigraphs are tipped in with library tape for easy removal. Also included in this books one block print printed in orange ink. ANAKED one is one of Joe' most ambitious projects and is a must for D,Ambrosio collectors and collectors of very fine book art. The book is signed by D'Ambrosio and also inscribed to ...........
