Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

New York: Random House, 1971 First edition, first printing. Illustrated by Ralph Steadman. Publisher's quarter-black cloth lettered in metallic silver, over dark gray paper-covered boards, blind-stamped with Steadman's illustration, in the original white pictorial dust jacket designed by Susan Schwaab. Near fine book with some sunning to extremities; dust jacket with a touch of rubbing and with a small crease at the bottom of the front flap, light crease to rear panel, else bright and free of any tears or chips. A near fine and very attractive copy. Originally published in Rolling Stone, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is the author's best known "failed but essentially noble experiment in Gonzo journalism," a literary genre that subjectively blends truth and fiction. The novel tells of the protagonist Raoul Duke and his attorney Dr. Gonzo as they travel on a drug-fueled, wild adventure "into the heart of the American Dream." The plot is loosely based on the author's actual adventures with American attorney and activist Oscar Zeta Acosta and is supplemented with Thompson's reflections on the 1960's counterculture movement. Ralph Steadman's iconic and grotesquely beautiful illustrations animate Thompson's bizarre journey, assisting the reader in picturing the novel's absurd events. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was adapted into a popular film of the same name, starring Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro, in 1998. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

With 34 colour and line illustrations, 32 of which are full page. Slight fraying to spine, minor rubbing to extremities; a very good copy. First and sole edition, number 18 of 100 presentation copies of this facsimile manuscript, produced by Joni Mitchell as gifts for her friends. Inscribed by Mitchell on the first page, "For Judy - the lady with the red carnation - throw it to the Greek dancer - give it on Mother's day, plant it in a window box … I hope you are well and happy". The recipient was Judy Collins, with her signature in purple beneath Mitchell's inscription. Collins recorded the first commercially released version of Mitchell's song Both Sides Now in 1967. This book features poems, drawings, and watercolours by Mitchell, including the lyrics to her 1970 song Big Yellow Taxi, and 1971 song Carey, which was inspired by her time living in a cave-dwelling hippie community in the village of Matala, on the Greek island of Crete.

        Mercian Hymns.

London: Andre Deutsch, 1971 - Octavo. Original cream boards, titles to spine brown. With the dust jacket. Front board slightly bowed, slight bumps to extremities, traces of removed sticker to front pastedown, an excellent copy in the jacket with slight creasing to extremities. First edition, first impression, publishers' presentation copy, additionally inscribed by the author on the laid down presentation slip, "David Rokeah, with every good wish, Geoffrey Hill". Rokeah was a Polish born poet who emigrated to Israel in 1934. This is the uncommon and superior casebound issue of Mercian Hymns, a series of 30 poems (or as Hill termed them "versets") which juxtapose the history of Offa, the eighth-century ruler of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia, with Hill's own childhood. The dust jacket was designed by John Andrew using a medieval graffito from All Saints Church, Sutton, found in Pritchard's English Medieval Graffiti. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

        Howl for Carl Solomon.

San Francisco: Grabhorn-Hoyem,, 1971. Quarto. Original beige cloth, colour and gilt illustrated covers after drawing by Robert La Vigne. Fine. First deluxe edition, one of 275 copies signed by Ginsberg, printed by Robert & Grabhorn and Andrew Hoyem on handmade paper from Goudy Modern type, with illustrated cloth binding after a drawing by Robert La Vigne. Ginsberg's masterpiece was first published by City Lights in 1956, in a much-reproduced wrappers format, but this is the first fine press edition. It includes a new note by Ginsberg about the presentation here of Howl for the first time in tandem with the poetic continuation The Names (written 1957, published in the Paris Review 1966), his "autobiographical chronicle of Howl's same radiant persons living & dead adored to specify Names & deeds in extended eulogy - an embodyment of Howl's abstractions". The publisher's advertisement is laid in. This copy has the ownership inscription of Winston Leyland (b.1940), a leading figure in American LGBT publishing who won the Stonewall Book Award in 1980. He established the Gay Sunshine Press in 1975, and his Gay Sunshine Journal (1970-82) was particularly influential for its interviews with prominent gay writers of the era, including Ginsberg himself.

Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH

Atheneum 1971 - Stated First Edition in Fine/Near Fine unclipped ($5.95) dust jacket with narrow folds along front and rear flaps (see photos), else fine and lovely, with gold medal on the jacket cover. 1972 NEWBERY AWARD WINNING BOOK, extremely scarce, especially in this condition. This copy has been SIGNED, not personalized, by the author's daughter, Jane Leslie Conly, who finished her father's work (Z for Zachariah), expanded on it (writing two sequels to this book), and went on to win her own Newbery Honor book (Crazy Lady!). The story is that Robert Conly, a senior assistant editor at National Geographic Magazine, wrote under this pseudonym because the periodical forbade employees from publishing with another company. First editions of this award-winning book are rare and this one is extremely collectible, especially as it has been signed by the author's daughter, who penned the two sequels. This marvelous copy is protected in a Brodart cover. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
