Crow Wakes.

Woodford Green, Essex: printed by Alan Tarling for Poet & Printer,, 1971. Twelve Poems. Small octavo. Original vellum-backed patterned boards, titles to spine and front in black. Fine. First edition, first printing, signed and numbered by Hughes not once but twice, one of the scarce 100 copies retained by the poet. The title page verso is signed "No. 25 Ted Hughes" and the front free endpaper signed and numbered "Ted Hughes 43/88". The printer Alan Tarling informed the bibliographers Sagar and Tabor that "These poems were excluded for personal reasons from [Hughes's] Crow opus... There were 200, a hundred each going to poet and printer plus 30 review or academic copies. None of mine was signed and each cost £2.25, though I gave some to friends and relatives. All the 'academic' copies were gratis, and said as much in an extra colophon... I don't know how TH's copies were distributed or whether or not they were signed". Hughes had in fact numbered and signed his copies on the title page verso, but later apparently overlooked that he had done this and signed what were presumably his remaining copies from 1 to 88 on the front endpapers. The vice versa order of events is also possible

The Vantage Point Perspectives of the Presidency 1963-1969

Holt, Rinehart and Winston, New York 1971 - Octavo, 636pp. Original red cloth bindings, printed title on spine and cover. Original dust jacket in good condition. Light foxing to fore edge. Inscribed by President Johnson and Lady Bird Johnson to Senator Ralph Yarborough on dedication page: "To Richard Yarborough / from his friend through the years - Lyndon Johnson and Lady Bird Johnson / LBJ Library Dec 20, 1971." Provenance: Inscribed by Senator Yarborough opposite the inscription with the note: "20 Dec. 71 - Inscribed by President Johnson in my presence at LBJ Library. RWY." Senator Ralph Yarborough server in the Senate from 1957 through 1971. He was a Democratic Senator from Texas, with strong ties to former President Lyndon B. Johnson. He was with President Kennedy in Texas, during his November 1963 visit. He initially refused to ride with Vice President Johnson in the motorcade, forcing President Kennedy to have a "heated exchange" with Johnson, demanding that he get Yarborough in line. Johnson acquiesced and Yarborough was in the motorcade behind President Kennedy in Dallas on November 22, 1963. Yarborough would go on to call that day in Dallas "the most tragic day of my life." In the 1964 senatorial election, he ran against future President George H.W. Bush, prevailing in the election and setting Bush on a path that would eventually lead him to the Presidency. He lost his seat in 1970 Lloyd Bentsen, returning to private life. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Johnson" on LBJ's personal book plate affixed to half title page. Lady Bird joins me in best wishes for the coming season and always" 6" x 9.25", pp. xi 1-636 with 72 pages of black and white photographs in six, 6 page sections. Both the book and the DJ have been well kept by the previous owner, excellent condition throughout with only a miniscule crimp on bottom, center rear of jacket.Lyndon Baines Johnson (Aug 27, 1908 - Jan 22, 1973) was the 36th President of the United States from 1963 to 1969, assuming the office upon the death of President Kennedy, after serving as the 37th Vice President of the United States from 1961 to 1963. A Democrat from Texas, he also served as a United States Representative and as the Majority Leader in the United States Senate. Johnson won his first Congressional election to the House of Representatives in 1937. He won election to the Senate in 1948, and was appointed the position of Senate Majority Whip in 1951. He became the Senate Minority Leader in 1953 and the Senate Majority Leader in 1955. As a leader in the Senate, Johnson became known for his domineering personality and the "Johnson treatment", his aggressive coercion of powerful politicians to advance legislation. Johnson ran for the Democratic nomination in the 1960 presidential election. Although unsuccessful, he accepted the invitation of then-Senator John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts to be his running mate. Johnson designed the "Great Society" legislation by expanding civil rights, public broadcasting, Medicare, Medicaid, aid to education, the arts, urban and rural development, public services, and his "War on Poverty". However his legacy also includes the escalation of America's involvement in the Vietnam War, which blemished his otherwise progressive place in political history.Inscribees, Robert M. and Helen D. Jackson were neighbors of the Johnson's to their ranch in Stonewall, Texas. Robert was editor of the Caller Times in Corpus Christi, TX. Helen was the first woman reporter on the San Angelo Standard Times, and subsequently worked for the Associated Press in Washington D.C. The Robert M. Jackson Award for Scholarship in Journalism is available from the University of Texas, Austin. "I had used the power of the Presidency proudly, and I used every ounce of it I had. I used it to establish programs that gave thousands of youngsters a head start in school, that enabled thousands of old folks to live in clean nursing homes, that brought justice to the Negro and hope to the poor that forced the nation to face the growing problems of pollution. In this exercise of power, I knew a satisfaction that only a limited number of men have ever known and that I could have had in no other way." (p 433). Bright red cloth with titling blocked in blue on spine and a blue rectangle with LBJ's signature impressed on cover [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

New York: Random House, 1971 First edition, first printing. Illustrated by Ralph Steadman. Publisher's quarter-black cloth lettered in metallic silver, over dark gray paper-covered boards, blind-stamped with Steadman's illustration, in the original white pictorial dust jacket designed by Susan Schwaab. Near fine book with some sunning to extremities; dust jacket with a touch of rubbing and with a small crease at the bottom of the front flap, light crease to rear panel, else bright and free of any tears or chips. A near fine and very attractive copy.Originally published in Rolling Stone, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is the author's best known "failed but essentially noble experiment in Gonzo journalism," a literary genre that subjectively blends truth and fiction. The novel tells of the protagonist Raoul Duke and his attorney Dr. Gonzo as they travel on a drug-fueled, wild adventure "into the heart of the American Dream." The plot is loosely based on the author's actual adventures with American attorney and activist Oscar Zeta Acosta and is supplemented with Thompson's reflections on the 1960's counterculture movement. Ralph Steadman's iconic and grotesquely beautiful illustrations animate Thompson's bizarre journey, assisting the reader in picturing the novel's absurd events. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was adapted into a popular film of the same name, starring Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro, in 1998. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Dust Jacket Included.
