McKEE, David
London: Dennis Dobson, 1970. Spine very lightly sunned, lower cover with small residue from sticker to upper outer corner. 4to. Color illustrations throughout, including rear endpapers. Original glazed color-illustrated boards. A near-fine copy of a rare early printing of Elmer, in which David McKee's endearing multi-colored elephant makes his first appearance. First published in 1968, Elmer quickly went out of print and it was not until it was republished in 1989 thatit became the international success he is today. Although the 1989 edition appears in the market quite readily, we have not traced another copy of a Dennis Dobson issue at auction. COPAC lists only one copy of the first edition (British Library), and just four copies of this early reprint (Exeter University, Oxford University, Trinity College Dublin, and the V&A). Espousing inclusivity, the story is as relevant today as when it was first published. McKee wrote and illustrated at least another 40 books about Elmer, giving rise to merchandising and a a TV series, and Elmer is now published in more than 20 languages.

McFarland, James A
Archive of manuscript sermon material from 1930s-1970s of an influential Northern Ireland Presbyterian pastor, Rev. James A. McFarland (1904-1987), including over 150 sketches, outlines, and complete manuscripts. Meticulously organized chronologically in folders, and preserved in a large Hollinger box. MANUSCRIPT SERMONS WRITTEN DURING THE IRISH TROUBLES. James A. McFarland (1904-1987) pastored at Toberkeigh and Croaghmore from 1931-1945, Sinclair Seamen's in Belfast from 1945-1960, and at Castlerock from 1960-1976. Many of the sermons contain multiple drafts, note sheets, and annotations as McFarland recycled sermons for different congregations throughout his career. Written during a tumultuous time in Northern Ireland's history, many of the sermons touch on contemporary social and political issues, including Catholic-Protestant tensions and the Troubles, often particularly reflected in sermon revisions and additional annotations. McFarland also engaged in conflict resolution work with the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Northern Ireland, and his sermons from Counties Derry, Antrim, and others occasionally touch on those themes as well. Scattered throughout are church program slips and event advertisements, newspaper and magazine articles, church administration documents, and letters written to McFarland, all of which generally constitute the backs of his sermon notes. Materials are arranged chronologically in folders and reverse chronologically within folders. Materials are dated by the earliest date found in which the sermon was given. Many sermons have multiple … [Click Below for Full Description]

BECHER, Bernhard and Hilla.
1970. Düsseldorf and New York: Art-Press and Wittenborn and Co. 1970. 4to.(280 x 218 mm). Publisher's blue cloth and photo-illustrated dust Jacket; pp. 216, 194 black and white photographs; very light wear to the extremities of the dust jacket, otherwise a bright, fresh copy. First edition, American issue. Text in German, English and French. The Bechers aimed to present industrial buildings as sculpture, and in doing so made 'an aesthetic statement and [established] the artists' position in late twentieth-century art'. Although this work has value as industrial archaeology, it is far more concerned with the sculptural qualities of the buildings and with the presentation of them within the book as works of art, and has had an enormous impact on this account. Robert F. Wilson & B. K. Battersby. Foreword by John P. Glass.
British Colour Council 1970. Second revised and expanded edition. First published in 1949., London. 3 volumes, in burgundy buckram slipcase; 2 swatch volumes in a burgundy buckram binder, text volume bound in matching burgundy buckram. 23 fold-out sheets of colour swatches in volumes 1 and 2, with black card viewing strip loosely inserted in front of each volume; xxii, 38 pages of text in volume 3. 426 colours pictured in 1260 swatches. 4.5kg. English. Very good; buckram binding is brittle and has subsequently split along half of outer hinge of volume 1 and volume 3 is starting to crack at spine; light shelf wear and marks to slipcase, 6m split along one edge; the bindings remain solid, with all the sample sheets and their swatches present. A scarce colour sample book, with all samples present. These three volumes were produced by the British Colour Council with an intention to standardise colours across the interior decoration trade. A decorator could use their copy of the dictionary to specify to a manufacturer exactly which colour they wished to achieve. The books became an invaluable aid but few survive because they were used so extensively as working tools. This second edition has 372 of the original colours plus an additional 36 new colours. This new shades were partly selected from the Dictionary of Colour Standards for Wool (1968) and partly from colour palettes not adequately covered in the first edition. Each of these 408 colours are shown on three surfaces - matt, gloss and pile fabric (carpet). There is an additional page of 18 neutrals and pastels with matt swa … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Vietnam War Photographica]
[Biên Hòa, Nha Trang, Long Binh, and other locations in Vietnam, plus Luzon, Philippines and Osan, South Korea], 1970. 469 black-and-white or color photographs, measuring between 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches and 8 x 10 inches, either mounted or laid-in to acetate sleeves, almost all annotated in ink on the bottom margin or on the verso. Contemporary three-ring thick quarto-size binder, black cloth over boards. Joints partially split, some abrading and dust-soiling to covers. Slight fading to some of the color photos. Overall, very good. An exceptional vernacular photograph album by a talented but unknown amateur photographer recording a wide variety of experiences on American Air Force bases in South Vietnam and Asia during peak years of the Vietnam War. The photographer was likely a member of the motor pool or a mechanic, as the shots seem to center around truck, airplane, and helicopter maintenance. Most of the photographs capture scenes on or around the various bases, with shots both inside and outside of barracks, airplanes (including several shots of a U2 spy plane), bombed-out equipment, and numerous photos of the people and structures in the "Vietnamese Area." A few images capture distant shots of the aftermath of a "rocket attack" on December 12, 1969; shortly thereafter the photographer and his friends celebrate Christmas. Some of the more interesting photographs during the photographer's time in Vietnam include "VC Prisoners," "Group of Zips," "Papa-San Working His Rice Paddie," "Vietnamese Guard Tower," "Church on the West Side of Biên Hòa," "Refueling at Phan Rang R … [Click Below for Full Description]

Washington, DC: Federal Bureau of Investigation, 1970. Very good. Oirginal official "wanted" circular, 10.75 x 16 inches, issued by the FBI on watermarked paper. Old creases from folding for mailing, pinholes at corners, two-hold punched at top, with one small loss to top margin. Still an attractive, very good example -- not to be confused with the many reprints issued in poster form that quickly became popular dorm décor for Davis' supporters. On August 7, 1970, Jonathan Jackson, a heavily armed, 17-year-old African American high school student, gained control over a courtroom in Marin County, California. Once in the courtroom, Jackson armed the black defendants and took Judge Harold Haley, the prosecutor, and three female jurors as hostages. As Jackson transported the hostages and two black convicts away from the courtroom, the police began shooting at the vehicle. The judge, one of the jurors, the prosecutor, and the three black men were killed in the melee. Angela Davis had purchased the firearms used in the attack, including the shotgun used to kill Haley, which had been purchased two days prior and sawed off. She had also written numerous letters found in the prison cell of one of the murderers. California considers "all persons concerned in the commission of a crime, whether they directly commit the act constituting the offense... principals in any crime so committed." Thus San Marin County Superior Judge Peter Allen Smith charged Davis with aggravated kidnapping and first degree murder in the death of Judge Harold Haley and issued a warrant for her arrest. Gabriel Garcia Marquez PIRATED COPY 1970
1970. One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez | Gregory Rabassa (Translated from the Spanish by) Pirated copy, Taiwan. 1970. Stated First Edition. 8vo. 422pp. Bound in cloth boards. Soon after its original publication pirated editions of the lauded novel were proliferated throughout Taiwan and China, due both to censor and lack of legal authorization. After being told of the widespread piracy of his works during a visit to China in 1990, Marquez is purported to have angrily stated, "not even one hundred and fifty years after my death will my books be authorized in China." Even still, the first legal and authorized Chinese edition was published in 2011, after much publisher bidding, several years before his death in 2014. This particular copy is completely in English, inferring an early issue, and the text itself printed from the First U.S. Edition of Harper & Row. The half-title and title pages are identical save for the removal of all publisher mention and, curiously, the acute accents over the words Garcia and Marquez. The copyright page, also with all publisher mention removed, bears the First Edition statement in identical typeface and orientation, but now off-middle set on the page and above a printing statement in Taiwanese. Of the pertinent information noted in Taiwanese: sold by the Royal Family Book Co., printed by the Guangda Printing Co., and an additional statement of First Edition. The dust jacket, crudely reprinted, retains the original price of $7.95. VERY GOOD in Very Good dust jacket protected in a removable mylar cover. Garcia Marquez, Gabriel
Harper & Row, Publishers, New York, 1970. First American edition of the author's magnum opus. Octavo, original green cloth with gilt lettering to the spine. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the dedication page, "y para Martin, con todo el afecto, Gabriel Garcia Marquez 05." Additionally signed by the translator Gregory Rabassa on the title page. Fine in a near fine first issue dust jacket with the exclamation point at the end of the first paragraph on the front flap. Jacket design by Guy Fleming. Translated by Gregory Rabassa. An exceptional example. "One Hundred Years of Solitude chronicles the life of Macondo, a fictional town based in part of Garcia Marquez's hometown of Aracataca, Columbia, and seven generations of the founding family, the Buendias. He creates a complex world with characters and events that display the full range of human experience. For the reader, the pleasure of the novel derives from its fast-paced narrative, humor, vivid characters, and fantasy elements. In this 'magic realism', the author combines imaginative flights of fancy with social realism to give us images of levitating priests, flying carpets, a four-year-long rainstorm, and a young woman ascending to heaven while folding sheets" (NYPL Books of the Century 31). Dean Koontz
1970. Condition: Very Good. ANN GRIFFIN (DEAN KOONTZ penname) - FLESH WAGER, published by Cameo #8066, copyright 1970, First printing. This book is one of a number of 30 or so books that Dean Koontz wrote for Cameo books early in his career under various pennames (like Linda Mitchell or Leonard Chris), and one book he actually published under his own name (Bounce Girl). Dean Koontz has since disavowed and otherwise denied having ever written such books (besides Bounce Girl which was published under his own name and the Leonard Chris book "Hung"), but the evidence is undisputable: The Library of Congress confirms that Gerda Ann Koontz (Dean's wife) holds the copyrights to this book. "Gracie" is one of the five names listed in the dedication of the gothic romance "Demon Child" (which Koontz wrote under the penname of Deanna Dwyer). All five of the first names listed in the dedication of "Demon Child" have turned out to be pseudonyms that Dean had used for this particular "Adult" literature. In an article written by Dean Koontz entitled "Dean's Drive" in the sci-fi fanzine Energumen #8 (6/71), Dean Koontz admitted to writing 30 of these books in 1970 (including "Share The Warm Flesh" and "Flesh Wager" - this book), along with Pig Society and The Underground Lifestyles Handbook (both of which were also published by the same publisher, Cameo books in 1970). One of the titles that Dean Koontz admits to having written ("Thirteen and Ready") was written under the penname of Ann Griffin. 1970. There are fifty-three original photographs of people, places and things in Thailand, sent as Real Photo Postcards with typewritten notes on the back in this captivating collection made by Harry Everett Lyndes, Jr., during his time stationed in Thailand during the Vietnam War. The photos, most measuring 5" x 7" and some 5" x 8", were taken and captions written by one airforce squadron commander (and later "C of M") A.Y.H. (Harry) stationed at NKP (Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Navy Base, formerly Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Air Force Base), and later Korat and Chiang Mai, and sent back home to his wife and two kids, the Lyndeses, in Orono, Maine, mostly between early October 1970 and March 1971 (some are addressed to his own mother and his wife when they visit her in California, and one hand-written postcard appears to be dated March 1970). From his accounts it appears A.Y.H. spent his time there awaiting assignment as squadron commander at NKP and later transitioning to "C of M" - something maintenance related - in Korat, and working on some sort of paper or report of his own accord on the side (he refers several times to "my experiment" - I believe this is related to his duties, and the "writing project" is possibly not.) Photos range in subject from Thai schoolmates and Karen (ethnic minority in Thailand) children smoking pipes, to young Buddhist monks and temples, to umbrella and charcoal making, to fishermen and traditional life activities, and one shot of the landscape below from the back of a helicopter. Included in his descriptions are: details of many small interactio … [Click Below for Full Description]

Christie, Agatha
The Crime Club, London, UK, 1970. In celebration of Christie's 80th birthday, Passenger to Frankfurt was advertised as her 80th work, one of her last novels ever to be written. Passenger to Frankfurt differs from other Christie novels, because it is not another example of detective fiction or crime fiction rather a combination of thriller and dystopian fiction, exploring a hypothetical future for the entire world. 5.5"x8" 256 pp. Pictorial jacket, titles to spine, advertisement to rear, 1.25 price to front flap. Red cloth boards, gilt tile and publishers imprint to spine. Jacket now covered in mylar, not price clipped, spine faded, light scuffing to covers. Gilt bright and intact, tail of spine bumped, head of spine toned. Foxing to fore and bottom edges of pages but does not extend into the book. Inscribed by Christie on front free end paper "For John, Agatha Christie" [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]
