        The Totem Protectorates

Hermes Free Press 1972 - [12pp]; sewn in deckled letterpress Tweedweave card covers; 366 x 260 mm folio pamphlet. Anonymous collaboration between Allen Ginsberg & Gary Snyder, beautifully produced by Holbrook Teter at the Cranium Press, "on Bergstrom papers" in the spring of 1972. A 6pp ecological list-poem subtitled, "Being the Assignment of Same to the Honorable Senators, Lawmakers of the United States Government, toward the Preservation of Life and Spirit in these Lands". Subsequently published in PLACE V3 N1 (June 1973) & NOT MAN APART V4 N10/1 (August 1974) -- as described by John Sherlock in his Gary Snyder Bibliography [D287 & D319/20 respectively]; & Bill Morgan in The Works of Allen Ginsberg, 1941-1994: A Descriptive Bibliography [C616 & C678/9 respectively] -- however the poem's first discrete publication appears to have entirely eluded them both. The title-page concludes with, "This Investiture Proclaimed in Grace Cathedral at the Autumnal Equinox, 1971". As Snyder (in Nevada City) revealed in a letter to Ginsberg (in Berkeley), during the "week of September 20-27 I'll be in the Bay Area staying at Greensfelder's in Mill Valley & working with Zach Stewart on enclosed vigil at Grace Cathedral [17 September 1971 -- The Selected Letters of Allen Ginsberg & Gary Snyder 1956-1991, p135]." Architect Zach Stewart (together with his professional partner Daniel Osborne) had not only helped Snyder build his home on San Juan Ridge, Yuba River, but also did the staging for the legendary Trips Festival (21-3 January 1966), & produced the entirely anonymous 'Four Thousand Years' Sensorium at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco (24 January 1969). The original Sensorium, 'America Needs Indians', staged at Longshoreman's Hall by Stewart Brand & Zach Stewart as the opening act of the Trips Festival (21 January 1966), established a paradigm for future multi-media productions, which soon morphed into Brand's 'Mother of All Demos' (December 1968) before ultimately graduating to the hallowed confines of Grace Cathedral. Ginsberg joined Snyder & Stewart at the vigil, Thursday 23 September 1971, adding a chant accompaniment to the reading (which also involved Keith Lampe, Mahina Drees & Betsy Flack). Enlisted by Stewart (16.xii.71), Teter set the piece in Centaur & Cloister types, producing at least enough copies to send to every sitting senator. WorldCat locates 3 copies (San Diego; Utah State; & another in Australia), omitting the one cited in the Robert Creeley Archive at Stanford. Apart from John Sherlock (Snyder bibliographer) & Bill Morgan (Ginsberg bibliographer), both Gary Lepper (compiler of 75 Modern American Authors) & George Dowden (the earlier Ginsberg bibliographer) were also remarkably unaware of its existence. Presumably a copy of the pamphlet is included in the Archive of Holbrook Teter now at the University of Delaware, though I've been unable to trace it. Described by Alastair Johnston in his Zephyrus Image Bibliography (2003: Poltroon Press) as the "first major work" of the press (p26), the only indication of the size of the edition is Teter's estimate of costs ($750, which he absorbed), & the number of sitting senators (100). Johnston goes on to speculate that, in the absence of records, Zephyrus Image editions were likely limited to between 100 & 200 copies (p173). Both its folio size & anonymity have likely accelerated the attrition of this little-known guerrilla imprint (compounded by the transient period & spontaneous mode of its initial circulation). Not only rare in the sense that it remains extremely difficult to supply, but that it has largely eluded bibliographical authorities. And not merely significant as the first major work of one of the most infectious outsider presses of the day, but also as a prescient broadside of the developing 70s ecological offensive. A nice copy with a tiny bump at lower tip & very light fading about perimeter of covers. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Invitations.]

Ampersand Club, Minneapolis & Saint Paul 1972 - A collection of approximately 125 Ampersand Club invitations ranging in size from large folio to 16mo, all but a handful printed letterpress by such printers as: Jim Eckman, Norm Fritzberg, Phil Gallo, Allan Kornblum, Gerry Lange, Paul Maravelas, Russell Maret, Paulette Myers-Rich, Will Powers, Dave Rathman, Gaylord Schanilec, Wilbur "Chip" Schilling, Richard Stevens, Emily Mason Strayer, Michael Tarachow, Emerson Wulling, and certainly many others, inviting Ampersanders to talks, lectures, and/or hostings by: the Hon. Governor Elmer L. Andersen, Harriet Bart, Betty Bright, Clifford Burke, Greg Campbell, Steve Clay, Pat Coleman, Amanda Degener, Scott Helmes, Johathan E. Hill, Jerry Farrell, Maria Fredericks, Rosemary Furtak, Molly & John Harris, Michael Hancher, Bob Jackson, Gunnar Kaldewey, Daniel Kelm, Stuart Klipper, Abe Lerner, Harry Lerner, Austin McLean, Jack Parker, Robin Price, Maggie Ragnow, John & Rose Randle, Jeff Rathermel, Karen Runyon, Dale Schwie, Ken Storm, Jr., Claire Van Vliet, Jeff Weber, Jody Williams, as well as the aforementioned Gallo, Powers, Maravelas, Maret, Powers, Rathman, Schanilec, Schilling, and the rest of the gang. The Ampersand Club has a long tradition of providing letterpress invitations to its events which occur more or less monthly Spetember through April, and concluding with an annual dinner meeting in May. Tradition holds that printers print anonymously, so the names of presses and printers are not included in the invitation copy. Over the years Gallo has printed no fewer than 50 (a dozen or so are included here). In his notes for his own Hermetic Press archive Gallo notes: "The invitations tend toward the decorative, this most particularly with the early ones when there was a camraderie of competitiveness among the printers: Gerald Lange, Michael Tarachow, Norm Fritzberg, Allan Kornblum, and Gaylord Schanilec. Consequently these invitations display a wide range of handset foundry type faces, designed not only to be sparkling works, but to spark typographic conversations." While this collection is a long way from being complete, and many as yet undetermined as to printer or press, this offering of 125 is by far the largest group of such invitations ever to come on the market.

Privatdruck (privately printed), o. O. 1972. - 4°. OPb. unp. (82 p.) S. Auflage 300 Expl. Parr/Badger, The Photobook: A History Volume III, S. 80. Mint copy. Burton Y. Berry was an American diplomat and senior member of the American Numismatic Society, he was also an important textile collector and served as consul to Istanbul, Bucharest, Cairo and Beirut before becoming Ambassador to Iraq and then retiring to Zurich. It is in Zurich in the late 60's, and when he was in his early sixties, that he shot this book. Presented as a guide to youth fashions (which it is), the book is more a vehicle for Berry's lust, admiration and fascination for the young men he documents. He is partiularly interested in long hair, the feminisation of youth and the flambouyancy of dress at the time. The images are really what would be later called streetstyle shots, and Berry does an excellent job categorising and presenting them, and seems to have struck up a dialogue with his subjects to really get an understanding of what was going on at the time. The overall feeling though, is that of a tender love affair with youth itself, in a way only a man in his sixties could produce [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A Technical Catalog of Computer Halftones. Baxter Art Gallery, April 27 - June 10, 1972.

Pasadena. Baxter Art Gallery - California Institute of Technology. 1972 - First printing, 100 copies. Hierzu heißt es in der Winternummer 2015 der David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library: >With the acquisition of Robert Dewar's 1972 artist book, A Technical Catalog of Computer Halftones, the Rubenstein Library is now home to what is likely one of the earliest examples of a digitally printed image. Though diminutive in scale, measuring less than a half-inch wide, the image is perhaps one of many missing links in the largely undocumented recent history of photography. Dewar's work is prodigious as it simultaneously demonstrates the former limits of digital imaging while paving the way for future digital processes. For the book is not simply a portfolio showcasing digitally printed images. It actually chronicles Dewar's experiments to create the digital image using burgeoning computer technology, masterfully entwining the form and content. In so doing A Technical Catalog of Computer Halftones becomes a manual that is analogous to the Daguerre, Niépce, and Talbot pamphlets of the 1830s and foreshadows an aspect of digital photography that wouldn't come into existence for another thirty years.< [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

        documenta 5. Kassel 30. Juni bis 8. Oktober 1972.

Hans Haacke unterzeichnet und verordnet "Nicht zum Verkauf", Anatol [Herzfeld] konstatiert "Kunst ist Arbeit - Abeit ist Kunst", Ben Vautier gestattet einer im Mittelpunkt alleine stehenden Ameise besondere Aufmerksamkeit: "----this one all alone in the Miidle with a headache of art is Ben".

        Twelve Cards.

London: Lorrimer, [1972] - 12 colour pictorial cards loosely inserted in the original printed card folder. Cards in excellent condition, folder rubbed and creased. First edition, first impression, presentation copy to alexander trocchi, inscribed by the author on the front of the card folder, "For Alex from Christopher". The two writers met in Paris during the early 1950s, when Logue joined the staff of Trocchi's literary magazine Merlin. Logue later wrote: "Between 1952 and 1955 I saw Alex, as he was to me, several times a week; but in the 28 years following his departure from Paris until his death in 1984 we met no more than 15 times, seldom alone, and twice in police courts". He recalled how Trocchi "had befriended me, published me, persuaded others to publish me, had helped to curtail my suicidal urge, overseen the publication of my first book, and borne with my so-called love affairs" (A Life in Pieces: Reflections on Alexander Trocchi).
