Stanford, Frank
[N.P.]: [1957-1972]. Comprised of 7 loose and 19 stapled onionskin pages measuring 8.5 x 11" and including a total of 22 poems. Representing the final version almost in its entirety, the typescript lacks only three poems that appeared in the first edition; instead, it contains an additional six poems that were ultimately cut. Within the collection, five of the loose poems bear Stanford's annotations and corrections; the stapled portion is clean, bearing only a label to the footer of each poem "from Field Talk: Some Poems 1957-1972." Drawing from a rich and immense oeuvre as he compiled his chapbooks with publisher Irv Broughton, Frank Stanford had a unique opportunity to cut and add poems that changed the tone of each collection. Considered an example of his maturing voice, Field Talk "dealt with tension between the narrative and the lyric, between the allegorical and the personal...by the time he reached his peak with Field Talk, he combined the two impulses into a unified voice" (Howell). The present gathering of typescripts is a revealing look at Stanford's process in developing this unity -- as he selects and combines poems from various moments across twenty years in his life, considering how they communicate with each other and shape a reader's experience. On several annotated pages, Stanford even shows the process of revising and cutting existing poems, removing lines and stanzas that no longer work, and striking out title markers for collections he had previously planned to use the pieces. An exceptional moment in his career, preserved on onion skin.

Adams, Richard
Macmillan, New York, 1972. First American edition of the author's first and most beloved work. Octavo, original brown cloth. Signed by Richard Adams on the title page. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of shelfwear. Although Watership Down was rejected by 13 publishers before Collings accepted it, it has never been out of print, and is Penguin Books' best-selling novel of all time. It won both the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian Prize. The title refers to a hill in the north of Hampshire, England, near the area where Adams grew up. The story has its roots in the tales that Richard Adams made up for his young daughters during long car journeys. As he explained in 2007 in an interview with the BBC, he "began telling the story of the rabbits . . . improvised off the top of my head, as we were driving along." He based the struggles of the animals on the struggles he and his friends encountered during the Battle of Oosterbeek in 1944. The daughters insisted he write it down—"they were very, very persistent." After some delay he began writing in the evenings and completed it 18 months later. Stanford, Frank
[N.P.]: [c.1972]. 3 page Autograph Letter Signed on three sheets of yellow legal paper in black marker. Composed at the end of his trip along the East Coast with his publisher Irv Broughton, during which time they were gathering interviews for their project The Writer's Mind: Interviews with American Authors. Frank Stanford was a man who rarely traveled, being closely tied to the land and people of Arkansas. "But Stanford spent much of 1972 traveling through the South and New England with [Irv] Broughton, a communications teacher and filmmaker. Together, the two interviewed and filmed poets/writers Richard Eberhart, Malcolm Cowley, and John Crowe Ransom...Moreover he briefly lived in New York City, if perhaps for merely a few weeks...Returning to Arkansas from New York, he moved to the old spa town of Eureka Springs" (People). The present letter occurs at this time, as he and his publisher Irv Broughton parted ways and found their paths home. "Dear Irv, Tried to get in touch with you several times. Guess you've already left, but I'm sure this address is correct. Waited to hear if you were coming back with more film. In the other letter I mentioned I met a German camera man...he would have done any filming in or around the East Coast for a ride, food, to the west coast...Guess you ran out of money." At its opening and close, Stanford's letter deals with the practicalities of their collaborative project -- the financial struggles, the efforts to get manpower and equipment. But in the middle of the letter, Stanford shifts out of his project-driven business mindset and into the … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Cooper, Alice]; [Gordon, Shep]
Unknown: Unknown, 1972. Six black-and-white photographs, 8" x 10." Possible publicity photos but no identifying marks or information. Photos are in Good or better shape with faint creasing down the middle; the snake photo has a marginal stain, and the tophat publicity photo has a stain that intrudes into the picture somewhat; photo of London bobbie next to flatbed truck has slight corner crease. Two photos are of Alice and his mates cavorting with topless women in what appears to be a basement; these seem way, way too risque to be publicity photos. Another is of Alice in top hat with cane surrounded by garbage cans; this one looks like a publicity photo. Includes an alternate version of Richard Avedon's snake photo, as well as two shots of the chaos it unleashed on London's Piccadilly Circus in a publicity stunt masterminded by Shep Gordon, Alice's manager. In a 2014 Guardian interview with Cooper Simon Reynolds writes, "A flatbed truck carried a giant billboard of Cooper, nude except for his pet snake [Kachina], through London, only to mysteriously break down in Piccadilly Circus, where a group of reporters and photographers just happened to be waiting to document the ensuing traffic jam and police fracas." "No matter what they say, do not move the truck," Gordon had instructed the driver. Cooper had been an unknown in the UK up to that point, with a nearly empty arena awaiting him. Gordon's stunt filled that arena and quickly became one of the legends of his marketing prowess. All in all an unusual selection of photos from the Detroit rockstar's early days, about which we … [Click Below for Full Description]

Stanford, Frank
[Eureka Springs, Arkansas]: February 18, 1972. 7 page Autograph Letter Signed in blue marker, on rectos of white sheets measuring 8.5 x 11". Addressed to his publisher Irv Broughton, and composed after the poet's divorce and release from the Arkansas State Mental Hospital, the letter reveals a sense of clarity and a renewed drive to write. As with many of the letters between Stanford and Broughton, the poet opens with warmth and familiarity. "Dear Irv, Thanks for the call last night, Rather: Early This Morning, here...Sorry I was incoherent, if not suborbital. You sound good & clear & broke." Much of the first page is dedicated to reminding Broughton to check out the films of Cocteau -- especially La Belle et la Bete -- but after concluding his movie recommendations, he shifts to a more poignant topic and a notably more aggressive tone. His target: American poets and critics. "The same people who are admonishing we poets to forget Europe and god only knows where else in favor of America are the same people who turned their backs on Whitman years ago," he observes, "I feel that Americans are all paranoid and insecure now, and so they form these stupid little cliched ways of writing poetry...I refuse to listen to American neuroses -- just these anxious voices -- these other whisperings are voices from hell. My mind is clear: Artists of All persuasions and nations appeal to me." In a passive reference to his time in the institution he adds, "I may decend into hell occasionally, but no longer than Dante!" For Stanford, like the classical poet, a descent into hell could lead to … [Click Below for Full Description]

Stanford, Frank
Little Rock, Arkansas, 1972. Two page Autograph Letter Signed on an 8.5 x 11" lined sheet. Densely composed in pencil, on the recto is a letter that is an intimate and revealing look into Stanford's time at the state mental institution -- and it provides first-hand detail that lays to rest the debate about how and why he was there. On the verso, a long handwritten poem "Restlessness by DHL [D.H. Lawrence]" from the only book he had with him in the mental ward. In 1972, after his breakout publication The Singing Knives and shortly after the collapse of his first marriage, Stanford agreed "to have himself committed to the state mental hospital in Little Rock" (Ehrenreich). Those who surrounded him at the time had differing accounts of how and why he made this choice. While his soon-to-be ex wife "remembers Stanford being in a bad way," his mentor and favorite teacher Father Nicholas Fuhrmann "drove Stanford to and from the hospital" and reported that the poet "did it just for the sake of his mother...he was joking about it all the way. As far as he was concerned, it was just another experience" (Ehrenreich). Yet the present letter, written in Stanford's hand and in his own words to a close and trusted friend, shed new light on the experience. Though he begins the letter with an attempt at light-heartedness, Stanford cannot conceal his emotional turmoil from Broughton. "Sorry I haven't been in touch. I no longer live in Fayetteville, in the log cabin. My temporary address is Coury House, Subiaco Abbey, Subiaco. For awhile I worked there with the monks. I am not there no … [Click Below for Full Description]

Conroy was fired at the conclusion of his first year on the island for his unconventional teaching practices, including his refusal to use corporal punishment on students, and for his lack of respect for the school's administration. He later wrote The Water Is Wide based on his experiences as a teacher. The book won Conroy a humanitarian award from the National Education Association and an Anisfield-Wolf Book Award. Adams, Richard
Macmillan, New York, 1972. First American edition of the author's first and most beloved work. Octavo, original brown cloth. Signed by Richard Adams on the title page. Fine in a near fine dust jacket.
