New York City Transit Authority
Brooklyn: New York City Transit Authority, 1972. Massimo Vignelli. New York City subway guide published in 1972 by the New York City Transit Authority. Designed by Massimo Vignelli. Page unfolded measures 21" x 18" and folded 7" x 3 1/2". This 1972 subway map was the first of several iconic designs made by Massimo Vignelli of the New York subway system. Prioritizing readability and aesthetics over geographical accuracy, Vignelli's design provoked immediate criticism and even ire from the public, contrasted by critical acclaim for its ingenuity and utility. Set in the Swiss-designed Helvetica font often used by Modernist designers, the guide shows all the routes comprising the subway system, including lines run by the IRT, IND, and the BMT. The front side of the map lays out the lines in different colors, with water colored in a shade of beige common to 1970s design. A key at the top assigns colors and delineates symbols, providing short descriptions of each route and its hours. On the back is a list of every station on the map, each with its assigned color, line, and associated places of interest. When folded, the map's covers have a bold graphic design made from the lines' colors. The map is in excellent condition with very minimal wear along folds, slight abrasion on cover. Vignelli's subway design was revised by the MTA six times in the following years, until 1979 when the MTA finally caved to public pressure and produced a more geographically accurate subway map designed by Tauranac.

CLARKE, Arthur C.
Victor Gollancz, London, 1972. First edition. Ownership signature of Ian Macauley, fine in a slightly spine-faded, near fine dustwrapper. Receipt from the publisher laid in. Inscribed by Arthur C. Clarke to his protégé, one-time secretary, and longtime friend Macauley; "To Ian, who is welcome to steal any of it. Arthur. Lo. Aug 72." Macauley was the dedicatee of Clarke's first published hardcover novel, *Islands in the Sky*, and was an award-winning *New York Times* journalist. He also edited Clarke's book of collected essays, *Greetings, Carbon-Based Bipeds!* (2000). Clarke wrote the last chapter of *Childhood's End*, while visiting Macauley in Atlanta in 1952, where he was reportedly greatly influenced by their discussions. A nice association copy of this miscellany, mainly speculations on space, and some reprints of earlier essays. Macauley has made a pen emendation in the text, apparently while preparing the essays for the collected volume. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Used with wear and tear. Heinemann 1972. Signing events were rare in those days, not like today. These early signed copies were usually to friends and family, before they were even released into book stores. You can tell by the style of signature and handwriting what are early signed copies. Personal friends of Wilbur's per the inscription. I have no further information. We are selling a special Wilbur collection on behalf of a client. Wilbur will be releasing his memoirs this Spring so now it the time to invest again. From early 2000's until 2011 we were the world's largest dealer of Wilbur's early and signed books. It was our privilege to meet him privately, including at his home, to have him verify signed books and to line-sign books for me only (Niso would not allow the practice for long). He was concerned about the integrity of those dealers selling his signed books and it was a great honor to become friends with him for a time. Him and Niso also bought rarer copies as well as other memorabilia from me like film scripts. After the rarest titles, like this one, were sold into collections, I moved onward in my book dealing focus. One of the secrets of the trade I can share with you is that neither authors or publishers kept the old records of what was published how, when or why. No one thought to keep the written records of contemporary books and most information has been carried word of mouth, embellished on the way or frankly just made up. (that has certainly changed now). Certain information persist over the years among collectors and becomes fact, when it is really j … [Click Below for Full Description]

Alfred McCoy
Indochina Resource Center, Washington, D.C. The scarce August 1st, 1972 printing of Indochina Chronicle (No. 18). Most notable in this issue (and its centerpiece) is the June 1972 testimony before Congress of Alfred McCoy, a young doctoral student in Southeast Asian History at Yale, who was called in to discuss the growing problem of the "flourishing narcotics trade in South Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand". This testimony, along with other articles McCloy had written, would soon evolve into his seminal book "The Politics of Heroin in Southeast Asia". This issue of "Indochina Chronicle" has held up nicely: solid and VG to VG+ in its stapled wrappers, with a tiny bit of light staining to the front panel. Quarto, 24 pgs. Includes other articles such as "Premier Khiem's Family Mafia", "Heroin, Opium and the Little Man" and "Flowers of Evil" (also by Alfred McCoy). An important document in America's ever-deepening involvement in Southeast Asia and uncommon as such. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Dr Seuss
New York: Random House, 1972. This is an EXTREMELY rare opportunity for someone to own, what appears to be one of the RAREST Dr. Seuss books still in existence in top-notch condition! This is not JUST a FIRST EDITION, and not JUST a FIRST PRINTING......but something much more magical and unique. To start, even though the copyright of the book reads 1972, this book is in "Like New Condition" and appears to never have been read. There is NO dust jacket for this edition of this book....yes, that's right, there is NO dust jacket (which is one of the ways that the rarity has been confirmed. This book measures: 6.78 (w) x 9.14 (h) x (.3) dThis is a hardcover book, HOWEVER- on this copy of this book, there is a yellow and red "starburst" on the cover (as seen in the photos listed here). Additionally, the back of the book only contains the category of Dr. Seuss book, while all of the other copies on the market contain much more writing. Also, when you open the book, there are TEN pages (back and front) of "mail-in" cards to join the Bright and Early Book Club.Following those inserts are two different "TITLE PAGES"; one of which, includes the copyright information and the letters, " J K 6 7 8 (". These letters indicate that is a "special" edition- FURTHER, there is absolutely NO, that's right, NO ISBN Number!!Also, there are several notations in the book that state "illustrated by Dr. Seuss in 1968."You can search high and low, all over the internet, and this copy cannot be found. This is one of the rarest books of Dr. Seuss that I have ever heard about or came across. Not to mentio … [Click Below for Full Description]

Willeford, Charles
New York: Crown Publishers, 1972. First hardcover edition, preceded by a paperback original published by Chicago Paperback House in 1962. INSCRIBED by the author on the front endpaper, with typical dry wit: "To Palmer [and] Marge Carlson - / Your determination in getting this book almost -- almost -- matches Frank Mansfield's. My warmest personal regards. Yours, / Charles Willeford / 17 Feb 1973." Scarce signed. The "Frank Mansfield" to whom Willeford refers is the narrator of "Cockfighter," a disgraced gamecock trainer who has taken a vow of silence (which, at the start of the novel, has lasted over two years) until he wins the elusive Cockfighter of the Year Award. The author's uncommon second hardcover title. Basis for the 1972 Monte Hellman film, for which Willeford wrote the screenplay and played a key supporting role, starring Warren Oates in a little-known but brilliant performance as Mansfield. Fine and unread in a Very Good only dust jacket. Owner name matching the inscription to the front pastedown. Jacket is chipped and rubbed, with light toning to the spine, and a sticker shadow to the rear panel. [Attributes: Signed Copy; In Dust Jacket]

New York: Cannon Films, 1972. Draft script for the 1972 film, here under the working title "Zora". Something of an arthouse predecessor to what became a cavalcade of holiday slasher and horror films. The film's cult status was helped by featuring Warhol superstars Mary Woronov, Candy Darling, and Ondine, experimental film icon Jack Smith, and artist Susan Rothenberg, as well as its being in the public domain, which released it for frequent late night airings on local television. Set in Massachusetts, shot on location on Long Island. Blue titled Studio Duplicating Service wrappers. Title page present, with credit for screenwriters Theodore Gershuny, Jeffrey Konvitz, Ira Teller and Ami Artzi. 102 leaves, with last page of text numbered 101. Mimeograph duplication.
