        Look Back With Pleasure.

Combe Lodge, Beckley, Sussex: , [c. 1971]. [Presentation copy of the unpublished typescript of the autobiography of Major General Sir Alec Bishop.] 2 volumes, octavo (254 x 205 mm), collation: volume I: ff. [ii] + xiv + 146; volume II: [i] + 147-304. Original binders of red faux leather spines, dark red cloth sides, brass binding screws, lettered in gilt on front covers. Professionally typed on rectos only, with dedication, preface, epilogue, appendix, and twelve pages of synoptic contents of the twenty-nine chapters. Inscribed on the title page of volume I: "With love and best wishes from the author - 16th January, 1972". A few light marks to binders, touch of foxing to titles and prelims (also to fore-edge), dampstain to fore-edge of volume I (not affecting margin of leaves); overall in excellent condition. Detailed, brisk, discursive and entertaining unpublished memoir by Major General Sir Alec Bishop (1897-1984), KCMG, CB, CVO, OBE, one of the senior British commanders in post-war Germany, running the gamut of his extensive career. The Imperial War Museum neatly summarises his account: "recording his experiences as a junior officer with the Dorset Regiment in Mesopotamia and Palestine during the First World War and in India during the 1920s, service in the Colonial and War Offices in the 1930s and in the War Cabinet Secretariat during 1940-1941 (with anecdotes about Churchill and the London Blitz), briefly as Deputy Director of the Political Warfare Executive at the end of the war, then with the Control Commission for Germany as Chief of Information Services, Deputy Chief of Staff and Regional Commissioner for North Rhine-Westphalia, 1945-1950, senior appointments in the Commonwealth Relations Office, 1951-1957, Deputy High Commissioner in Calcutta, 1957-1962, and High Commissioner in Cyprus, 1964-1965". Bishop's Great War service began as a junior officer with the 2nd Battalion of the Dorsets and there is a fascinating (if brief) account of his life "in the line", including some amusing asides ("one amenity not often found in the desert was provided by Lieut Holland and his violin. This officer had before the war occupied the position of first violinist in the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, and fortunately had brought his violin to war with him"). India includes much on social aspects (functions, polo, big game shooting) but also a glimpse of the Moplah Rebellion (also known as the Malabar Uprising) of 1921 in which the Dorsets were engaged ("the Moplah bands fought with great bravery, often charging out of the forest at close quarters, many only armed with the traditional short Moplah sword"). A period in the Colonial Office is followed by extensive travel in Africa (South Africa, Sudan, Somalia, "southern Rhodesia"); he is in East Africa when war breaks out and then joins the War Cabinet Offices ("Service revolvers in London Clubs") and some wonderful snapshots of Churchill ("The Prime Minister enjoying being under fire", "Mr Churchill's courage and inspiration" and "Mr Churchill and Polish officers") including an unforgettable image of the Prime Minister "climbing onto the roof of 'The Annexe' [above the Central War Room] in the evenings wearing his blue siren suit and tin hat, and watching the current air raid and the efforts of our searchlights to pick up the enemy bombers. He claimed that this interlude stimulated and helped him when he returned to the work at his desk"; Martin Gilbert quotes Churchill's own account of witnessing the Blitz from the same position on a different night (The Second World War, II pp. 305-06). There is then an extensive and fascinating first-hand account of Germany immediately after the war and the situation in India. Historian Dr Christopher Knowles, author of the recently published Winning the Peace: The British in Occupied Germany, 1945-1948, considers Bishop's activities in post-war Germany to be the most significant part of his career: "General Bishop was posted to Germany in June 1945, one month after the end of the war, and left five and a half years later on New Year's Eve 1950, which makes him one of the longer serving senior officers. His first position was head of the 'Public Relations and Information Services Control' division of British Military Government, generally known by its acronym, PRISC. In 1946 he was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff to Sir Brian Robertson, then Deputy Military Governor, and from 1948-1950 he was Regional Commissioner for North Rhine-Westphalia, by far the largest Land, or region, in the British Zone of Occupation. His memoirs are easy to read with a wealth of interesting stories and anecdotes". The Imperial War Museum has a copy among Bishop's personal papers otherwise it is, by its very nature, rare. An entertaining and well-written memoir from an officer with over five decades "mostly spent in the service of the British Empire" (Preface).

Clairvaux, Jura, France: Published by the Trianon Press for the William Blake Trust, London, 1971 - Small folio. Original tan quarter morocco, marbled paper sides, titles gilt to spine. With the original marbled paper slipcase. Tiny splits at the mouth of the slipcase, otherwise fine. Colour and monochrome plates throughout. First edition thus, publisher Arnold Fawcus's copy, number 1 of 28 numbered copies with the following calligraphic limitation notice signed by Geofrey Keynes, "This special edition bound in quarter morocco with added material shewing progressive stages of the printing of the plates is signed by the author & is limited to 28 numbered copies. No. 1. Geoffrey Keynes". This deluxe copy derives from the publisher's archive held by the descendants of the Trianon Press's founder and publisher Arnold Fawcus. The reduced format 16-colour facsimile appeared one year before the larger format 8-colour facsimile of 1972 - although that three volume edition is a magnificent piece of book making, this smaller format version, as well as being somewhat more wieldy, shows the quality of the Trianon Press's colour facsimile printing at its best.         Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory Signed Photograph.

      - Large photograph of Willy Wonka, the five golden ticket winners and their parents and a trio of Oompa Loompas. Boldly signed in by Gene Wilder, Peter Ostrum, Julie Dawn Cole, Denise Nickerson, Paris Themmen, and Michael Bollner, with each but Wilder adding their respective character names from the 1971 film. The photograph measures 12 inches by 17 inches. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 17.75 inches by 22.75 inches. An attractive piece. Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory is a 1971 American musical fantasy film directed by Mel Stuart, and starring Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka. It is an adaptation of the 1964 novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl, who himself wrote the screenplay. The film tells the story of Charlie Bucket (Peter Ostrum) as he receives a Golden Ticket and visits Willy Wonka's chocolate factory with four other children from around the world. Filming took place in Munich in 1970, and the film was released by Paramount Pictures on June 30, 1971. In 1972, the film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Score, and Wilder was nominated for a Golden Globe as Best Actor in a Musical. The movie introduced the song "The Candy Man", which went on to become a popular hit when recorded by Sammy Davis Jr. In 2014, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".         Le Torchon Brule Nos. 0-6 with La Mere Supplement [All Published]

Paris: Le Torchon Brule, 1971. First edition. No. 0: 4to, 24 pages [including covers], offset printed on newsprint with two color cover. Numbers 1-5: Tabloid format, offset printed on newsprint in color. With supplement to No. 5: 4to, [8] pages, folded, unbound sheets offset printed in blue on newsprint. All issues published of one of the most important feminist periodicals published in France in the 1970's, which was an early and indispensable part of the second wave feminist movement in the country in the aftermath of the events of 1968. It includes the scarce debut issue zero, which was published as an insert in the Libertarian newspaper L'Idiote Liberte, and the special Mother's Day supplement, which was issued with no. 5 but is usually missing. The title of the periodical, which could be literally translated into English as "the dishcloth burns" is a French euphemism for domestic strife, with the connotation of an ongoing or running battle. Le Torchon Brule was a group project and radical with regards to content and format, with each issue being created by a different group of women. From a design perspective, Le Torchon Brule is remarkable for the extent to which the lack of a unified graphic design across the numbers seamlessly and successfully became the design itself, always provocative and involving the reader with each line and image - an achievement which has few parallels in the era. All issues in strong very good to near fine condition. Scarce complete, especially with the Mother's Day supplement and issue No. 0.

It was this experience which inspired his 1971 novel, centered on anunnamed assassin, codenamed the "Jackal," who ingeniously plots a further threat to de Gaulle's life?Winner of the Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Novel, Forsyth's first thriller won immediate acclaim as "a strikingly successful thriller? It makes such comparable books as The Manchurian Candidate and The Spy Who Came In From The Cold seem like Hardy Boy mysteries" (New York Times). Drawing on events such as a 1962 assassination attempt on De Gaulle, made by Alain de Bougrenet de la Tocnaye, Forsyth returned from years as a war correspondent in Africa to write his novel "in just 35 days, a feat he describes as something 'not quite so crazy when you think of twelve pages a day, times that by thirty-five and there you go, there's your novel" (BBC). Basis for the popular 1973 film by director Fred Zinneman, starring Edward Fox. Preceded the same year by the English edition. Yaakov & Greenfieldt, 231. A fine signed copy.       [London:] The Curiously Strong Press,, 1971. The Curiously Strong Vol IV No2 October 31st. Quarto, pp. 28. Original reverse-colour paper covers, wire-stitched, front cover lettered in black on purple, rear cover lettered in purple on black. Single pen annotation to p. 1, correcting "freaming" to "dreaming". Slight rubbing and a few nicks to extremities, some gentle creasing to front cover, light foxing to endpapers. First edition, first impression, signed by the author on the title page. A scarce copy of the author's first published work, and the first of only three volumes of poetry. Ackroyd dates his signature "London: November 25, 1990". The Curiously Strong was a poetry magazine established by the American poet Fred Buck in the late 1960s and later edited by Ian Patterson until its cessation a decade later. Its name was a nod to the Altoids mints catchphrase, and the single author pamphlets were sent, for free, to anyone who sent a stamp to the editor. It published early work by writers such as Peter Riley, John James, Barry MacSweeney, Anthony Barnett, and Nick Totton. Ouch, along with Ackroyd's second and third volumes of poetry, London Lickpenny (1973) and Country Life (1978), was later included in a collection entitled The Diversions of Purley and Other Poems (1987). This edition is extremely rare commercially and there are only four copies located in institutional holdings worldwide (WorldCat, Copac).
