Inscribed and dated by the author, "Joy Maya Angelou". Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. This testimony from a black sister marks the beginning of a new era in the minds and hearts of all black men and women... I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, liberates the reader into life simply because Maya Angelou confronts her own life with such a moving wonder, such a luminous dignity. I have no words for this achievement, but I know that not since the days of my childhood, when the people in books were more real than the people one saw every day, have I found myself so moved... Her portrait is a biblical study in life in the midst of death." (James Baldwin)

        Plaza Suite [Inscribed Association Copy]

NY: Random House. (1969). An early play by one of the most admired and successful playwrights and screenwriters of his time, who won two Tony Awards for Best Play and earned four Academy Award nominations, among numerous other awards. Plaza Suite was directed by Mike Nichols when it opened on Broadway, with George C. Scott and Maureen Stapleton starring. Nichols won a Tony Award for Best Director for his work on the play and Scott and Stapleton each received Tony nominations. Stapleton also starred in the 1971 film version, for which she received a Golden Globe nomination. The film was directed by Arthur Hiller. This copy is inscribed by Simon to film director Tony Harvey: "To Tony - I hope you do it - Neil." Harvey had directed The Lion in Winter in 1968, for which he received an Oscar nomination, and Simon's inscription indicates a desire at that time for Harvey to direct the film adaptation of the play. Page edges foxed; crown cloth sunned; indent to upper rear board; about near fine in a rubbed and spine-faded dust jacket. A nice association copy, and a small but notable bit of film history. .         Okinawa, Okinawa, Okinawa

Tokyo: Shaken, (1969). Light crease to the bottom edge of the front cover, a small internal crease near the spine heel, three small tape shadows on he inner front cover, still close to near fine in photo-illustrated wrappers.. First Edition. Oblong quarto. Tomatsu's most political book, with the famous, searing image of a missile launching sandwiched between graphic slogans demanding the end to American occupation of the island. Like most of Tomatsu's books, Okinawa is difficult to categorize. It borrows stylistically from the Provoke school while never losing its focus as a social documentary, yet it would be overly simplistic to lump it in with other Japanese protest books, even those about Okinawa.         Encounter for July 1969 [Signed by George Seferis and Signed by Nigel Dennis] Vol. XXXIII No. I

London: Encounter, 1969. First edition. Wrappers. Very Good +. A Very Good + copy of the July 1969 issue of Encounter magazine, a literary magazine founded by poet Stephen Spender and author Irving Kristol, SIGNED BY GEORGE SEFERIS (in Greek) AND SIGNED BY NIGEL DENNIS, each at his contribution. (But for a small scuff on the front cover, a Fine copy of this rather uncommon literary magazine). Though it received funding from America's Central Intelligence Agency which desired that the magazine counter leftist neutralism during the cold war, the publication's editors had considerable authority over the selections published. The magazine achieved considerable success and meaningful influence under the editorship of Melvin J. Lasky (who succeeded Kristol as editor in 1958 and remained at the helm until 1991 when the magazine ceased publishing), and published a wide range of poets, likely because the literary co-editors typically included a noted poet, such as Nigel Dennis. This issue includes never-before-published poetry by George Seferis and by Nigel Dennis. Each man has signed the magazine at his contribution, ("The Cats of St. Nicholas" by George Seferis; "A Desperate Measure" by Nigel Dennis). Nigel Dennis, the English Novelist Poet, Playwright, Critic, and Editor (whose uncle was husband to Novelist Phyllis Bottome and served as the MI6 Station Head with responsibility for Austria, Hungary and Yugoslavia) published only a few books, but each of them was noteworthy. A Greek Diplomat, Ambassador to the UK, and one of the Twentieth Century's most important Greek Poets, George Seferis won the 1963 Nobel Prize in Literature for "his eminent lyrical writing, inspired by a deep feeling for the Hellenic world of culture", making him the first Greek ever to have received the Prize. Copies of Nigel Dennis' work signed by him are quite uncommon and copies of George Seferis' work signed by the Nobel Laureate are (beyond our shelves) exceedingly scarce. Publications signed by both of these noteworthy authors are, of course, RARE. A Very Good + copy, SIGNED BY GEORGE SEFERIS and SIGNED BY NIGEL DENNIS. RARE.

Freshness, vitality, and brilliant color characterize his depiction of women, flowers, and animals, executed in a powerful and highly individualistic style throughout the book. Born in Shanghai in 1929, Ting studied briefly at the Shanghai Art Academy before leaving China in 1946 and traveling abroad to Hong Kong, Paris, and New York. Culling inspiration from the diverse forms of the CoBrA group, Abstract Expressionism, and Chinese calligraphy, Ting creates a seductively magical world of sensory pleasure, recalling a nineteenth-century focus on the beauty of the natural world.
