A complete run in 6 issues, each issue 32-48 pp., of the provocative satirical Czech journal under the editorial direction of Jan Jirasek, published during the brief period of political liberalization leading up to the Prague Spring of 1968, with political satire, erotic and literary humor, and innovative typographic layout influenced by the post-war surrealist and avant-garde movements, and including literary and artistic contributions from Václav Havel, Ji í Sýkora, Josef Škvorecky, Bohumil Hrabal, Bohumil Št pán, and Jan Ambrož. Illustrated throughout, including photomontages and full-page illustrations 4to. Orig. stapled pictorial wrpps. Brno (Ve erní Brno) 1966-1968. The Prague Spring was a brief period of political liberalization during the era of Czechoslovakia's domination by the Soviet Union after World War II, beginning on January 5, 1968 with the election of reformist Alexander Dubcek as First Secretary of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (KSC). It ended shortly thereafter, on August 21, 1968, when the Soviet Union and other members of the Warsaw Pact invaded the country to put a halt to the reforms and usher in a more repressive regime known as "Normalization". Provocative journals, including Trn, quickly ceased publication. Many of the contributors even emigrated or would not publish again until after 1989, when the Velvet Revolution peacefully ended Communist rule and ushered in a new age of democracy. A very scarce complete run of an important avant-garde journal; as of November 2017, WorldCat locates only one holding of a single issue in North America.

Parachute to Paradise (Original screenplay for the unreleased 1969 film)

New York: American Broadcasting Company [ABC], 1968. Revised draft script for the unreleased 1969 film, "Parachute to Paradise," with a single notation on the title page. Written for screen by Allan Gittler, the New York-based minimalist designer of electric guitars, and a virtuoso musician, who later changed his name to Avraham Bar Rashi. Gittler was a film editor in New York during the 1960s and 1970s, patented a photographic printer for motion pictures, wrote a novel called "The Rose-Colored View," and made an 18-minute short film called "New York, New York, New York," comprised of 700 photo stills, and a score that he and jazzman Elvin Jones composed. He died in 2003. Roger Davis, an actor in the film, notes that it was completed, but not shown until a broadcast on ABC in 1972. Davis: "[It was] written by the late guitar designer Allan Gittler (a.k.a. Avraham Bar Rashi,), directed by Floyd L. Petersen [sic], scored by [noted jazz arranger] Gil Evans, and also starred Natividad Abascal, Astrid Aanning, Martin J. Kelley, Bret Morrison, and the Boston garage band, The Bagatelle... was an avant-garde 'film fantasy' where Roger played the hero of a popular cigarette commercial campaign who happens to skydive. It was filmed in the summer of 1968 (beginning June 3) during Roger's short leave of absence from 'Dark Shadows'... ABC televised the movie in 1972, at the height of Roger's popularity on 'Alias Smith and Jones.' Since [the film] has gone ignored by IMDB and other web sources, here are some reflections provided by writer Gittler to 'Vintage Guitar' magazine in 2000: 'I had had enough of my career, and quit to ride my track bike through Central Park and write the script of my movie, 'Parachute to Paradise.' After the heartiness of 15 weeks of preproduction, casting the principal players and 200 extras, seven weeks of principal photography, writing the music, and seven months of editing and (doing) enormous publicity, a fallout with my producer relegated the production to a couple of cans in the laboratory vault.'" Gittler's only film credit: guitarist in "Hold for Gloria Christmas," an episode of "Naked City" (Season 4, Episode 1, 1962). Purple titled wrappers, with a credit for Gittler. Title page present, noted as "a film," with a credit for Gittler. 71 leaves, mimeograph, with white revision pages throughout, dated variously between 3/11/68 and 3/20/68. Pages Near Fine, wrapper Very Good plus, bound with two gold brads. www.dfwretroplex.com/rogerdavis3. OCLC locates no institutional holdings for the script.

The Double Helix: A Personal Account of the Discovery of the Structure of DNA.

Atheneum, New York 1968 - First edition, sixth printing, published a few months after the first of the Watson's ground-breaking work regarding the discovery of DNA for which the author, Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1962. Octavo, original blue cloth. Signed by James D. Watson on the title page. Near fine in a very good dust jacket with a few closed tears and wear. Jacket design by Jeanyee Wong. Foreword by Sir Lawrence Bragg. "Science seldom proceeds in the straightforward logical manner imagined by outsiders," writes James Watson in The Double Helix, his account of his codiscovery (along with Francis Crick) of the structure of DNA. Watson and Crick won Nobel Prizes for their work, and their names are memorized by biology students around the world. But as in all of history, the real story behind the deceptively simple outcome was messy, intense, and sometimes truly hilarious. To preserve the "real" story for the world, James Watson attempted to record his first impressions as soon after the events of 1951-1953 as possible, with all their unpleasant realities and "spirit of adventure" intact.          Historische print- en dicht-tafereelen, van Jan Baptist Girard, en juffrou Maria Catharina Cadiere. [The Netherlands?], 1735. Small 4to (24 x 18.5 cm). With 32 "scenes", each consisting of an engraved plate with a letterpress poem on the facing page. Gold-tooled red half goatskin morocco (2nd half of the 19th century), richly gold-tooled spine.

Gay & Lemmonyer II, col. 603 ("tres rares") & col. 551 (French ed.: "extrêmement rares"); Kearney, The private case 901-902 (2 incomplete copies); STCN (3 copies); WorldCat (3 copies, incl. 2 the same); for background information: R.H. Robbins, Encyclopedia of witchcraft and demonology (1968), pp. 69-74. Attractive copy of a very rare erotic print series concerning the notorious case of the Jesuit Jean-Baptiste Girard and Catherine Cadière, which inspired the 1748 French novel Thérèse philosophe : an icon of 18th-century libertinism. The series was issued (simultaneously?) in French with letterpress title: Histoire du pere Jean Baptiste Girard … et de la damoiselle Marie Caterine Cadière , but without the accompanying anti-Catholic verses and prose introduction of the present edition in Dutch. The occasionally very graphic prints show some of the accusations such as flagellation and kissing the "stigma" (ulcer) below her left breast. Most scenes include one or more demons or angels. At age 18 the beautiful young Catherine Cadière joined a group of devotees of the Third Order of St. Theresa, who lived in their own homes, but were dedicated to prayer and meditations. Their spiritual director was the highly respected Jesuit father Jean-Baptiste Girard (1680-1733). Catherine told him that she had saintly visions in which God recommended Girard to guide her. After a year of spiritual guidance he decided her signs of holiness were questionable. Catherine was disappointed by Girard's rejection and retreated to a convent, where she started acting possessed. Exorcism was attempted and she accused father Girard of bewitchment and sexual abuse. The case was then taken to court and soon attracted a lot of attention, which resulted in dozens of publications. The notoriety of course came from the scandal of a priest sexually abusing a young girl, who herself used crude deceptions to pass herself off as a saint. The case marked the end of formal trials for witchcraft in France.Five of the plates in the present copy have some very minor additions in ink. With some occasional minor thumbing, four tiny wormholes in the last four leaves, and some offsetting of the plates onto the facing pages of letterpress text, otherwise in very good condition with crisp impressions of the plates. The binding with some minor restorations, otherwise also very good.

Warren E. Burger Supreme Court Signed Photograph.

, 1968. 1968. Large photograph from the 1970's of the Burger Court, signed by each justice. The justices are Warren Burger, William Rehnquist, William J. Brennan, Thurgood Marshall, Sandra Day O'Connor, Lewis Franklin Powell, Jr., John Paul Stevens, Harry Blackmun and Byron White. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 18 inches by 20 inches. Rare and desirable. The Warren Court is best known for its landmark decisions, which outlawed segregation in public schools and transformed many areas of American law, especially regarding the rights of the accused, ending public school-sponsored prayers, and requiring "one man-one vote" rules of apportionment of election districts. He made the Supreme Court a power center on a more even basis with Congress and the Presidency, especially through four landmark decisions: Brown v. Board of Education (1954), Gideon v. Wainwright (1963), Reynolds v. Sims (1964), and Miranda v. Arizona (1966).

Warren E. Burger Supreme Court Signed Photograph.
