A Catalan Cookery Book. A Collection of Impossible Recipes

Lucien Scheler, Paris 1969 - Quarto, portfolio of loose uncut sheets (as issued), including eleven engravings; protected in original printed paper wrappers and the publisher's green cloth folder within matching slipcase; an excellent copy, numbered and signed by Lucien Scheler and Nicole Fenosa. French food and French bibliophiles. Privately printed book of Catalan recipes printed in an edition limited to 150 copies with fine engravings by Nicole Fenosa. The book is a token of affection between two bibliophiles; it was printed for Lucien Scheler in Paris. Scheler was a founding partner of Librairie Thomas-Scheler, still a magnet for book-collectors in the rue de Tournon in Paris. A friend of many artists and writers, he had a sensible love of food and the exotic. The author, Irving Davis, was also a dealer in rare books and manuscripts, and is described in the preface as 'a connoisseur of priceless manuscripts and early printed books, he was a gourmet and a marvellous cook.' The text was edited with a foreword by the influential food writer Patience Gray, resulting in a lucid and attractive cookery book of some sixty recipes, from soups to sweets, including discrete chapters on omelettes, pasta, snails, seafood, meat, salads and sweets. The book concludes with a small section of reflections on the life of the author, by most accounts a charming renegade who insisted upon fidelity in the pursuit of culinary excellence.         Once In Golconda: A True Story of Wall Street 1920-1938

Harper & Row, New York 1969 - Inscribed by John Brooks. Once In Golconda is a Wall Street classic that vividly depics the stock market boom of the twenties, the crash of 1929, the Depression, and the coming of the New Deal. "As Mr. Brooks tells this tale of dishonor, desperation, and the fall of the mighty, it takes on overtones of Greek tragedy, a king brought down by pride. Whitney's sordid history has been told before. But in Mr. Brooks's hands, the drama becomes freshly shocking" (Wall Street Journal). Bill Gates and Warren Buffet singled Brooks as their favorite business author of all time. Near fine with dust jacket that is showing tiny closed tears and a small chip to the top back, and a small stain to the bottom of the spine. Inscribed by the author to Richard Salomon. A very nice, scarce copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

ARCHIVE OF LETTERS, TO HIS BIOGRAPHER WITH RELATED EPHEMERA AND SIGNED PHOTOGRAPH

Near fine. . The forty-four letters, signed by Rex Stout were written between 1969 and 1975, while John McAleer (1923-1903) researched Stout's life and writings. The biography was published by Little Brown in 1977. In the course of their work, Stout and McAleer became close personal friends, as did their wives. Most of the letters are typed and signed in ink on Stout's small stationery, from High Meadow, in Brewster, New York, one signed as Archie Goodwin (Stout's fictional narrator from his Nero Wolfe series), the majority of letters include their original envelopes, a few letters of introduction are written on behalf of McAleer, also a few very short notes all in Stout's hand. Included in this archive are other Nero Wolfe-related ephemera, and a framed black-and-white photograph of Stout trimming a begonia, (9 3/4 x 11 in.) inscribed to McAleer, 12 April 1969 John McAleer wrote the Edgar Award for his biography of Rex Stout published by Little Brown in 1977. He was also nominated for the Pulitzer Prize .

High-Energy Inelastic e-p Scattering at 6(deg) and 10(deg)" WITH: "Observed Behavior of Highly Inelastic Electron-Proton Scattering" in Physical Review Letters 23 Issue 16 pp. 930-939, October 20, 1969

1969 FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS of an enormously influential paper that provided the first empirical evidence of the existence of quarks within the atomic nucleus. In demonstrating that quarks are real particles, Friedman, Kendall, and Taylor confirmed Murray Gell-Mann's hypothesis on their existence; for their discovery, the trio were awarded the 1990 Nobel Prize in Physics. Gell-Mann's landmark work positing the 'idea' of quarks was based on the assumption that strongly interacting particles he classified (called hadrons) were all "built up from more elementary constituents" - that he famously called 'quarks' (Levinovitz, The Nobel Prize, 44). Few people, however, "believed that quarks were real particles. Despite many searches in accelerators and in cosmic rays, no one had found an isolated quark… As Gell-Mann himself said: 'Such particles [quarks] presumably are not real but we may use them in our field theory anyway'" (Alan Lightman, The Discoveries, pp. 457-). Friedman, Kendall, and Taylor proved the existence of quarts by using "high-energy electrons from the then new accelerator, and [showing] that they bounced back in an unexpected way from the protons and neutrons in a gas target" (Quinn, The Mystery of the Missing Antimatter, 97). "Friedman's group was startled… to observe that the scattering pattern suggested not that the positive charge of the proton was uniformly spread out, but rather that charges were confined to point-like centers within the protons. Further experiments determined that the source of these point charges existing within the protons (and neutrons) were indeed evidence of the recently proposed elementary particle, the quark" (Manhattan Rare Books). "The electrons ricocheted off hard point-like objects inside the proton. These were soon shown to be identical with the quarks, thus simplifying the physicist's picture of the world; but the results could not be entirely explained by quarks alone. The Nobel Prize-winning experiment indicated that the proton also contained electrically neutral constituents. These were soon found to be "gluons," particles glueing the quarks together in protons and other particles. A new rung on the ladder of creation had revealed itself and a new epoch in the history of physics had begun" (Nobel Prize Award Ceremony, 1990). CONDITION & DETAILS: Lancaster: The American Physical Society. (10.5 x 9 inches; 263 x 225mm). Physical Review Letters, 23, 16, October 20, 1969. Fine condition inside and out.

        Andy Warhol (Stockholm Catalogue)

Stockholm: Moderna Museet (1969) - Second Edition. Quarto. The deluxe edition, gilt-edged, housed in a black plexiglass slipcase with clear sides to highlight the gilt edges. SIGNED by Andy Warhol. Limited to approximately 50-100 copies, but exact bibliographic details are unknown. Warhol's famous 'Stockholm Catalogue', published on the occasion of his first European museum show at the Moderna Museet, Stockholm, February - March, 1968. The concept for the catalogue was developed by Kasper König, who commissioned Factory stalwart Billy Name, and a teenage Stephen Store, to photograph how Warhol and his coconspirators lived and worked. But it was König's use of the xerox machine to reproduce Warhol's own work that gives this catalogue its signature feel. By some estimates over 200,000 copies were printed in three editions. (Parr / Badger, v2, 144-145; Open Book 238-239). Tiny production crease to the top of the spine, else fine in gilt-edged wrappers; plexiglass slipcase is split at the top of the spine, a few light scratches, otherwise near fine. Rare early bilingual edition of the "Mother Goose" fairy tales of Charles Perrault, with parallel texts in English and French on facing pages. It includes "Little Red Riding Hood", "Blue Beard", Sleeping Beauty", "Puss in Boots", "Cinderilla"[!], "Little Thumb" (Tom Thumb) and two other Perrault tales. The present book is the only English edition of Perrault's tales before 1785 for which the ESTC records more than one copy: it records only 3 copies of the present issue and 3 copies of what may be another issue of the same edition. The frontispiece and 8 plates (one illustrating each Perrault story) are skilfully executed in a lively style, primarily by etching. They are more artistic than the earlier illustrations we have seen. There is a water stain at the head of quire N and the last 2 leaves. The book is otherwise in very good condition and the text and plates are well printed. The binding is slightly scuffed and rebacked, and has later endpapers. A rare early English and French Mother Goose, with 9 lovely plates.

Random House 1969-2002., New York - First editions, first printings of each volume in the author's acclaimed autobiography series. Octavo, 6 volumes. Each are signed and inscribed by Maya Angelou. An excellent set in dust jackets. "This testimony from a black sister marks the beginning of a new era in the minds and hearts of all black men and women. I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, liberates the reader into life simply because Maya Angelou confronts her own life with such a moving wonder, such a luminous dignity. I have no words for this achievement, but I know that not since the days of my childhood, when the people in books were more real than the people one saw every day, have I found myself so moved. Her portrait is a biblical study in life in the midst of death" (James Baldwin).

Portnoy's Complaint Signed Limited Edition, #179 of 600 copies

New York: Random House. F/F. 1969. 1st Edition. Hardcover; 1st Printing. 6916414 . Signed and numbered by the author on the limitation page. Fine, clean, straight book that is very tight and apparently unread, bound in ivory colored rough weave cloth with gold gilt printing on the front and spine and publisher's red upper page edges, in a Fine, clean and undamaged dustjacket (no flap data and unpriced at publisher's wish) of a yellowish-tan color with small decorative threads woven throughout the paper. The book is housed in publisher's light red paper-covered boards slipcase that is in Very Good+ condition with the limitation number written small in ink at the lower spine end, a shadow from a (probably) very small price sticker at the upper right corner, and some small nicks in the paper at the opening of the slipcase. It is structurally very sound; just has a few small cosmetic problems. The classic tale of a repressed and imaginative young man who has vivid sexual fantasies and adventures, all ruined by feelings of shame and fear of retribution instilled in him by his parents. Made into a memorable movie in 1972, with Richard Benjamin playing the part of Alexander Portnoy. Similar themes to Roth's 'Goodbye, Columbus' - but perhaps that's partially because Richard Benjamin also starred in that movie and left an indelible impression of an angst-ridden young man. .

        Portnoy's Complaint

New York: Random House 1969 - . Limited numbered edition. Signed by Roth on the limitation page. One of 6000 copies, this copy #319. Publisher's coarse light beige cloth, lettered in gilt, red topstain; in the original light beige dust jacket, lettered in gray, housed in the publisher's red slipcase, with the limitation number handwritten to the spine in black. An excellent copy, with a hint of light wear to the extremities, else fine; unclipped dust jacket, with just a touch of toning to the spine, bright and fresh panels, slipcase with some light wear to extremities and a few spots of light soiling, else fine. Overall, a fine copy in a fine dust jacket and excellent slipcase. Portnoy's Complaint is the novel that is credited with transforming Roth from a promising young author into a major literary celebrity. The novel features the protagonist Alexander Portnoy, a young bachelor whose strong sexual desires and inability to achieve satisfaction results in his simultaneous self-loving and self-loathing. The text is structured as Portnoy's extended, continuous monologue in a singular therapy session with his psychoanalyst Dr. Spielvogel, to whom Portnoy divulges confessions of libido in scathing detail. A semi-autobiographical text, Portnoy's Complaint is infused with aspects of Roth's own life, including the protagonist's Jewish heritage and many of the New Jersey locations, such as Roth's alma mater Weequahic High School in Newark. Despite its controversial reception for its explicit descriptions of the protagonist's sexuality, Portnoy's Complaint is a widely acclaimed novel that served as the basis for the 1972 film of the same name written and directed by Ernest Lehman. Indeed, in his 1969 review for The New York Times, Josh Greenfeld proclaimed, "Don't feel the least bit guilty about enjoying it thoroughly: I know not since Catcher in the Rye have I read an American novel with such pleasure."
