        Mirrors Messages Manifestations.

New York: Aperture Inc. - First Edition, 1969. The true first edition, not the reprint. A beautiful Fine copy in off-white canvas cloth stamped in glowing blue gilt at spine and on front cover, in a Fine dark blue laminated glossy dustwrapper, not price-clipped, complete w ith pamphlet of reviews inside pocket of rear pastedown, as issued. This dustwrapper is notoriously prone to fading, and curling and tearing along the edges of the lamination; this one is completely unfaded, with one minute tear to lower front spinefold. Probably stored away from the light, and never handled. 242pp. This is Minor's own comprehensive integral statement, combining his special penetrating sense of visual abstraction, filled with tantalizing mystery, and his sequential ordering of pictures which build to crescendos of feeling. Exquisitely reproduced black and white plates on coated text stock. Leavened with quotations from his writings. A brilliant summary of his work and aesthetic. One of a handful of crucial monographs of 20th Century creative photography. Scarce in this condition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        America house wrapped 1969. Siebdruck.

Heidelberg, Edition Tangente, - 90 x 62,5 cm, Tadell. 1100 gr. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

The Shocking Truth (1920's UFO Contactee Account)

Beverly, NJ: The Book Fund, 1969 Beverly, NJ: The Book Fund, 1969. First Edition. Signed and inscribed by Coe on ffep verso. Illustrations by Thomas Lulevitch. Octavo, 112 pp. Teal cloth, unimprinted; white pictorial jacket. Book is in handsome shape but for some page-edge dust, some endpaper tape residue and very lightly bumped corners; very good plus. Jacket is complete, but soiled and with tape at top and bottom which was at one time used to affix it to the book; about VG. The two are separate now, and none the worse for it. Light musty scent. One of the rarest and most sought-after accounts in all of UFOlogy and abduction lore. It's extremely difficult find a copy of this book at all, let alone in a jacket and inscribed. In that sense, possibly unique. [H.] Albert Coe is one of a handful of widely-celebrated contactee claimants whose contacts were of the "Space Brother" (benevolent human-looking alien) form, and as such he's the subject of numerous internet sites, including wiki. His contention that his first contact occurred in the 1920's would make him the first modern contactee by several decades. Regardless of how one feels about his story and the subject matter, this is one captivating tale. Extraordinarily rare. L100

        The Lord of the Rings

London: George Allen and Unwin, Ltd., 1969 Deluxe one volume edition, first printing. Publisher's black cloth, with Tolkien's illustration of the Numenorean throne with "Elendil" in Tengwar in gilt, silver and green to the front board, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, light blue speckled edges, black and white marble endpapers, with both of Tolkien's fold-out pictorial maps bound in, printed on India paper. About near fine, with light wear to the extremities, bright gilt, minor nick to the spine tail, light rubbing to the board edges, bright interior. A clean and pleasing copy. Housed in the publisher's black slipcase; with some light wear to the extremities, else fine. Originally published 1954-1955, The Lord of the Rings is a fantasy trilogy, written as the sequel to Tolkien's 1937 novel The Hobbit. It tells the story of the second attempt of the men, elves, and dwarves of Middle Earth to destroy the Dark Lord Sauron, the "Lord of the Rings." In The Hobbit, set almost 2,000 years after Sauron was initially vanquished, Hobbit Bilbo Baggins discovers Sauron's lost ring, which he used to control the inhabitants of Middle Earth vis-à-vis corrupt leaders whom he gave lesser rings to in order to gain power over them. In The Fellowship of the Ring, Bilbo leaves the ring to his nephew Frodo, who joins with a group of men, hobbits, dwarves, and elves on a quest to destroy it. In The Two Towers, Frodo and Sam continue alone on their increasingly perilous journey to destroy the ring while the remaining members of the Fellowship try to protect the realms of Middle Earth from the troops of Sauron, who continues to gain strength as Frodo brings the Ring closer. The Return of the King concludes the trilogy with the final destruction of Sauron and the reestablishment of proper order in the worlds of men and hobbits. Each volume is divided into two books and contains chapters narrated by different characters. This deluxe edition includes all three of the Lord of the Rings novels in a single, compact volume; the text is printed on India paper, a thin, dense paper most commonly used for printing bibles. Subsequent to the second printing, which was also in a slipcase, this deluxe edition was issued in a clamshell box.. Hard Cover. Fine.

        The Dance of the Solids

[NY]: (Scientific American). (1969). The first separate edition of this physics-themed poem. One of 6200 copies printed as Christmas cards to be issued with W.H. Auden's A New Year Greeting (not present). 24 pages, illustrated. Fine in stapled wrappers. Lacking the cardboard sleeve that combined the two booklets, but in a custom three quarter leather clamshell case from the Praxis Bindery. This copy is inscribed by the author: "For ___/ Merry Christmas 1995/ John Updike [with a drawing of holly leaves and berries]." While the print run of this item was not particularly small, especially when compared with the many limited editions Updike has done, the nature of its distribution -- as a freebie to Scientific American subscribers -- suggests that most copies would have been lost or discarded.         TLS (Typed Letter Signed) to musical director, Martin Rubinstein with fantastic content.

Champaign, Illinois [1969] - Original thin typing paper, 9 1/2 by 11 sheet, typed letter signed in blue ink by John Cage, dated April 25, 1969 and with pencil correction in Cage's hand. Wonderful two paragraph letter from this pioneer composer of avant garde music, considered the most influential American composers of the 20th century. With great content, written just a few weeks before his first performance of HPSCHD. Details arrangements for borrowing of one of the harpsichords he used for the musical piece, and guest arrangements for the event. Describes the HPSCHD event and party afterwards, including references to Ronald Nameth, Calvin Sumsion, and NASA. The end of the second paragraph reads, "After the event, which will start at 7:30 and go until midnight or thereabouts, there will be a party at Ben and Betty Johnston's. 1003 W. Church, in Champaign. Besides the music, there will be films and slide projections. The music is microtonal (microscope), so the visual work designed by Ronald Nameth and Calvin Sumsion is telescope (stars, planets, etc.) NASA is sending some 40 films, and 5000 slides. We'll also have The Trip to the Moon by Melies, one of the first moving pictures. And Nonesuch is now in the process of publishing the record of HPSCHD which hopefully will be ready by the time of the concert." Has some creasing at the top but otherwise Very Good.         Leaflets: Poems 1965-1968

New York: Norton (1969) - First Edition. The simultaneous issue in wrappers. An exceptional association copy, INSCRIBED by Rich to John Berryman: "For John, in love & gratitude / Adrienne." With five pencil emendations to the text in an unknown hand, the page numbers of which are noted on the rear pastedown. Also included with the book, and likely given to Berryman at the same time, is a small framed illustration [likely] from Mirza Ghahib's Ghazal XVIII. On the rear of the frame, Rich has written out her 10 line translation of the Ghazal, and INSCRIBED it: "For John, 25 October 1968 / in love and celebration / from Adrienne / [ten line transcription in her hand] / translated from the Urdu by Aijaz Ahmad & Adrienne Rich." A section of translated Ghazals appears at the rear of this volume, but Rich's personal translation for Berryman is not among them. Faint dampstaining along the bottom and fore edges of the back cover, else a very good copy in wrappers. The framed illustration is fine. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        LEAFLETS. POEMS 1965-1968

      W. W. Norton & Company (1969), New York - INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper to Robert Lowell, Elizabeth Hardwick, and their only child Harriet: "For Elizabeth + Cal + Harriet-/with always more love-/Adrienne." Lowell appropriated the book and the margins are filled with his ticks and slashes and a few words, especially in the section "Ghazals, Homage to Ghalib," a series of meditations on contemporary life modeled on Ghalib; the similarity to the poems Lowell was then working on for NOTEBOOKS and HISTORY is remarkable as is the association value of this copy. Three years later Lowell would publish THE DOLPHIN which Rich called "a cruel and shallow book" and "one of the most vindictive and mean-spirited acts in the history of poetry." Writing in AMERICAN POETRY REVIEW, she said: "what does one say about a poet who, having left his wife and daughter for another marriage, then titles a book with their names [FOR LIZZIE AND HARRIET] and goes on to appropriate his ex-wife’s letters written under the stress and pain of desertion, into a book of poems nominally addressed to the new wife?"         Fat Man's Agony

Geoffrey Bles, London 1969 - London: Geoffrey Bles, 1969. First Edition. Jacket art by Gareth Floyd. 7.5" x 5". 224 pp. Light sunning to lower front cover; some endpaper discoloration; previous owner's library red ink stamp on ffep (H.M.S. Blake); better than Very Good overall, with an exceptionally matching spine with bright gilt. Jacket has small nicks and creases at edges (see scan), a solid Very Good which has not been clipped and does bear the "21s net" price. A true first with jacket of Fat Man's Agony, one of the rarest of first editions from Glyn Carr, master of mountaineering murder mysteries in which his lead character, the redoubtable Sir Abercrombie Lewker, "professes age and decay, but doesn't display them much" and quotes Shakespeare on every occasion whether requested to or not. In Fat Man's Agony, Lewker is invited to spend a weekend at the farmhouse of Bertrand Awdrey in North Wales to climb local crags with such names as Fat Man's Agony and Suicide Wall. Lewker - and all the other invitees - are still members of a climbing club from which Mr. Awdrey had been expelled some years before, so. Glyn Carr is the pen name of Lt. Commander Showell Styles, a climber himself, of course, and the author under one name or the other of more than eighty books in various genres. Other Glyn Car mountaineering murder mysteries include: Lewker in Tirol; A Corpse at Camp Two; Swing Away, Climber; The Youth Hostel Murders; The Ice Axe Murders; Murder on the Matterhorn; Death on Milestone Buttress; Death of a Weirdy; Death Under Snowdon. As Showell Styles, some of his more recent titles have been Midshipman Quinn, Mallory of Everest, and Welsh Lakes and Legends. A very handsome example of a scarce book; please see scans.
