You've Had It, Charlie Brown: A New Peanuts Book

New York: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, (1969). First Edition. Trade Paperback Trade Paperback. Very Good. Unpaginated. A collection of daily cartoons from 1968 and 1969. First edition (first printing). Very good in wrappers (paperback), beginning to fade at the spine. A nicely inscribed copy with a full-page drawing of Snoopy. The inscription on the half-title reads, 'For __, with every best wish--Sparky. Come & see us again. You're always welcome.' Opposite the inscription is a drawing of Snoopy, signed 'Schulz.' The drawing measures 4 by 5-1/2 inches. The recipient was the long-time partner of Rod McKuen, a hugely popular poet and songwriter at the time. He composed the title song for the 1969 feature film, A Boy Named Charlie Brown. The Schulz inscription likely dates from that time. Schulz inscriptions aren't rare, but he only signed his name Sparky with people he knew, and truly friendly inscriptions do not surface very often.

        The Godfather

New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1969. First edition. Octavo, original half black cloth. Inscribed by the author, "For Nancy With my very best wishes Mario Puzo." Erasure mark on the half title page, very good in a very good price-clipped dust jacket. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A searing novel of the Mafia underworld, The Godfather introduced readers to the first family of American crime fiction, the Corleones, and the powerful legacy of tradition, blood, and honor that was passed on from father to son. "A voyeur's dream, a skillful fantasy of violent personal power" (New York Times).

Slaughterhouse Five, Or The Children?s Crusade.

New York: Delacorte Press, 1969. First edition. Octavo, bound in full blue morocco, titles to the spine, gilt tooling to the front and rear panels, raised bands, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Boldly signed by Kurt Vonnegut on the half title page. "Slaughterhouse-Five, perhaps Vonnegut's most powerful novel, presents two characters who can see beneath the surface to the tragic realities of human history but make no attempt to bring about change The central event is the destruction of Dresden by bombs and fire storm—a catastrophe that Vonnegut himself witnessed as a prisoner of war" (Vinson, 1414-15). "Kurt Vonnegut knows all the tricks of the writing game. So he has not even tried to describe the bombing. Instead he has written around it in a highly imaginative, often funny, nearly psychedelic story. The story is sandwiched between an autobiographical introduction and epilogue" (The New York Times).

L¿Encyclopédie, ou Dictionnaire Raisonné Des Sciences, Des Arts et des Métiers, . (Compact Edition, 5 volumes set)

Readex/Pergammon Press 1969 - 5 volumes, illustrated, 1969. A facsimile reprint, photographically reduced to about half original size, of the first Paris edition of this famous encyclopaedia produced between 1751 and 1772. Four reduced facsimile pages of the original appear on one folio-sized page (39.5 x 25 cm) of this printing. The printing quality is excellent and all text and diagrams are very legible. The encyclopaedia contains a wealth of information; over 75,000 entries and over 2,500 plates. A fine copy with a few minor marks to the covers. [French language] This book weighs over 30 kg when packed so additional shipping will be required. The original work consisted of: 17 text volumes produced between 1751and 1765 (in compact edition volumes 1, 2 & 3) 11 plate volumes produced between 1762 and 1772 (in compact edition volume 4) And the Supplement: 4 text volumes produced between 1776 and 1777 (in compact edition volume 5) 1 plate volume produced in 1777 (in compact edition at the end of volume 4) And the Tables: 2 volumes produced in 1780 (in compact edition volume 5) The Tables are an invaluable reference to the articles and plates contained in all 28 volumes of the Encyclopaedia and the 5 volumes of the Supplement, making 35 volumes in all (including the 2 volumes of Tables). The writers of the encyclopaedia saw it as a vehicle to access human knowledge and to guide opinion. It was a summary of thought and belief of the Enlightenment period and also a vast compendium of the technologies of the period, describing the traditional craft tools and processes. The encyclopaedia had a major impact on French society at the time and played an important role in the intellectual ferment leading to the French Revolution. The work is still much studied today, especially for its wealth of information on the tools and technologies of the period. Many clock enthusiasts will be aware of the 64 plates on horology; there are also plates on astronomy, astronomical instruments, dialling, mechanics, hydraulics, optics, turning, surveying, hydraulics, medical instruments and many other subjects. This is the striking Pop Art tableware that Roy Lichtenstein produced at the height of his powers for the groovy sixties shop, On First. A brand new, most handsome example of this charming ephemeral multiple - as bright and fresh as the day it was printed - beautifully presented in a 12 x 12 x 4" archival Artservices sixties-style Plexiglas display box / frame that can be hung on a wall or laid flat on a table.         Archive of letters, postcards, photographs, and notes from Crosby to songwriter Jimmy Van Heusen

v.p., chiefly Hollywood and Palm Desert, California 1969 - Includes 3 page Autograph Manuscript of Crosby's biographical notes for Rotary Club luncheon honoring Van Heusen and material relating to the luncheon, 1 page Autograph lyrics, 3 Typed Letters Signed ("Bing") to Van Heusen, Western Union telegram, 2 Autograph Postcards Signed ("Bing"), 3 photographs of Crosby, Bob Hope and others, and other material, detailed below, including copy of 2 page Typed Letter from Van Heusen to Crosby detailing wild night out with Sinatra and 1 page fragment of Typed Letter from Crosby congratulating Van Heusen on his marriage. Various formats. On Friendship, Clam Bakes, Sinatra, and Boozin'. Composer Jimmy Van Heusen (1913-1990) won four Academy Awards and one Emmy in a long career that included such hits as "High Hopes" and "Love and Marriage." Teamed with lyricists Sammy Cahn and Johnny Burke, Van Heusen wrote more than 70 songs performed by Sinatra or Crosby. Van Heusen also composed the title song to THE BING CROSBY SHOW, and worked with Crosby in HIGH TIME, ROAD TO MOROCCO and ROAD TO HONG KONG. As this correspondence demonstrates, Crosby and Van Heusen remained close over many decades of working together.1. 3 pg. MS on spiral-bound ruled notepaper: Crosby's handwritten notes for a speech given at a Rotary Club luncheon honoring Van Heusen, May 2, 1958. Crosby details Van Heusen's many achievements and awards, and supplies some personal commentary: "A visit to his home is an experience. It's a combination of the early days of the Wild West and the last days of Pompeii." And, "His best friends [are] Sinatra and Crosby. One as a stimulant, the other a depressant. We won't tell you which is which." 2. 1 pg. carbon: Van Heusen's Rotary Club luncheon acceptance speech, in which he excuses his voice: "If you think I speak badly . .Wait until you hear me sing . "3. 1 pg. TN on Van Heusen stationery: "Parody sung at the Rotary Club Luncheon." Includes such lines as "May I say Van Heusen enjoys his noontime boozin'." And concludes, "I'm glad Crosby made me move here / my thanks I must convey / The Rotary Club's a killer / And the luncheon's been a thriller / All the way, all the way"4. 1 pg. AN in blue pen on Crosby stationery: Lyrics, in Crosby's hand, titled "Added Patter." Humorous lines about drinking and clam digging: "We burrow for the bivalve down in Plumper Bay / Scratch and Claw and sift the silt the Kwatna way / At Nimkish we don't seek fish but the juicy clam / If all we get is empty shells - who gives a damn". With some pencil corrections and notes. Very likely lyrics to the "official song" mentioned in item 6 below.5. 1 pg. TLS (April 26, 1957) on Crosby stationery with 1 pg. TL draft (April 19, 1957) on Capitol Records stationery with Crosby's corrections in pencil: Crosby thanks Van Heusen for playing his latest, "Seven Nights a Week" and "Man on Fire," and adds this bittersweet note: "In the waning years of what has been an enormously lucky and gratifying career it's nice to know I can still capture some audience interest." The draft is a form letter, most likely written by a secretary at Capitol Records. Crosby cuts most of the letter's generic sentiments and fills the bottom margin with his pencilled substitutions. "Seven Nights a Week" was Crosby's attempt to appeal to a younger, rock-and-roll audience.6. 1 pg. TLS (December 12, 1960) on Crosby stationery: letter concerning "the official Clam organization," a list of members ("There's you and I, Crowley and Morrow, Fiorini and Rosenberg, Harris and Collier, Sindeman, and Max Bell.") and progress on the club's "official song." Undoubtedly a reference to the "Crosby Clambake" held at Pebble Beach, the first pro-am golf tournament.7. 1 pg. TLS (January 26, 1967) on Crosby stationery: Crosby acknowledges receipt of "the cast album," possibly to Van Heusen's musical WALKING HAPPY.8. 1 pg. Western Union telegram (December 7, 1953): Crosby informs Van Heusen that he is leaving his house, "Your place is free now in case of any of your pals o [Attributes: Signed Copy]

The Red Tent (Working script for the 1969 film, with original reference photograph)

Soviet Union: Mosfilm, 1969. Working post-production script for the 1969 film. Combination of typescript and carbon typescript, with notations in red holograph ink throughout. Laid in is a vintage single weight borderless reference photograph from the film. An unusual internal script from the production of the Soviet-Italian co-production that was ultimately distributed worldwide by Paramount Pictures. Not a post-production script in the typical sense, meaning a script that reflects the finished, edited film. Rather, a script that was produced in the midst of editing, with numerous notations regarding editing changes that still need to be made. The text is in English, but the wrapper is Italian, meaning that it was likely issued by the Italian arm of the production. The commander of a failed 1928 Arctic airship expedition remembers the events of the "Italia" airship flight, crash and subsequent rescue efforts. The "ghosts" of people involved in the events appear in his memories to assist him in determining his guilt in the affair. The reminiscences are mixed with the real action: the flight of the "Italia", the air rescue operation from Kings Bay airfield, the expedition of the "Krassin" ice-breaker. A sort of human touch is added by the ever beautiful C.C. playing Malmgren's girlfriend. Green studio wrappers. Noting 12 reels. Carbon typescript on onionskin stock. Very Good. Photograph 8 x 10 inches (20 x 25 cm), some residue from an old snipe label on the verso, else Near Fine.

Archive of letters, postcards, photographs, and notes from Crosby to songwriter Jimmy Van Heusen

v.p., chiefly Hollywood and Palm Desert, California, 1969. Includes 3 page Autograph Manuscript of Crosby's biographical notes for Rotary Club luncheon honoring Van Heusen and material relating to the luncheon, 1 page Autograph lyrics, 3 Typed Letters Signed ("Bing") to Van Heusen, Western Union telegram, 2 Autograph Postcards Signed ("Bing"), 3 photographs of Crosby, Bob Hope and others, and other material, detailed below, including copy of 2 page Typed Letter from Van Heusen to Crosby detailing wild night out with Sinatra and 1 page fragment of Typed Letter from Crosby congratulating Van Heusen on his marriage. Various formats. All in near fine condition. As this correspondence demonstrates, Crosby and Van Heusen remained close over many decades of working together. 1. We won't tell you which is which." 2. 1 pg. carbon: Van Heusen's Rotary Club luncheon acceptance speech, in which he excuses his voice: "If you think I speak badly ... .Wait until you hear me sing ... " 3. 1 pg. TN on Van Heusen stationery: "Parody sung at the Rotary Club Luncheon." Includes such lines as "May I say Van Heusen enjoys his noontime boozin'." And concludes, "I'm glad Crosby made me move here / my thanks I must convey / The Rotary Club's a killer / And the luncheon's been a thriller / All the way, all the way" 4. Very likely lyrics to the "official song" mentioned in item 6 below. 5. "Seven Nights a Week" was Crosby's attempt to appeal to a younger, rock-and-roll audience. 6. 1 pg. TLS (December 12, 1960) on Crosby stationery: letter concerning "the official Clam organization," a list of members ("There's you and I, Crowley and Morrow, Fiorini and Rosenberg, Harris and Collier, Sindeman, and Max Bell.") and progress on the club's "official song." Undoubtedly a reference to the "Crosby Clambake" held at Pebble Beach, the first pro-am golf tournament. 7. 1 pg. TLS (January 26, 1967) on Crosby stationery: Crosby acknowledges receipt of "the cast album," possibly to Van Heusen's musical WALKING HAPPY. 8. 1 pg. Western Union telegram (December 7, 1953): Crosby informs Van Heusen that he is leaving his house, "Your place is free now in case of any of your pals out here want to use it thanks very much." 9. Autograph Postcard Signed (April 15, 1961): Photo postcard from San Jose, Mexico. Crosby hopes Van Heusen's trip to England was a success and gives a short update on his trip to Mexico: "Been here about a week, flying down on the Richfield DC. 3. Nice weather, but the group is sometimes a bit gay." 10. Autograph Postcard Signed (December 28, 1962): Postcard from the Hotel Camino Real, Guadalajara, Mexico. Crosby is in Mexico to buy tile and porch furniture for the house he's building in Las Cruces, or "Casa Crosby." "The house at Las Cruces is going to be quite nice ... " Ends with an obscure reference to skydiving and songwriter Sammy Cahn: "See the Slim One 'hit the silk.' Cahn's price was right." 11. 3 b/w photographs: a) Gelatin silver print (9 x 7-1/8 inch) of Crosby in hat and pipe with Bob Hope and Sammy Cahn, reviewing lyrics at Capitol Records. Docketed on rear, "NBC Photo by Gerald Smith." Likely from recording of THE ROAD TO HONG KONG (1962). b) Crosby in straw hat and pipe with wife Kathryn. c) Crosby and Cahn relaxed and smoking. 12. 1 pg. fragment of TL (December 22, 1969) on Crosby stationery: Crosby belatedly congratulates Van Heusen on his marriage to Bobbie Brock, "I wanted you to know that I'm certainly happy that two of my dearest friends are now united." Crosby jokes at his wife's expense, "Kathryn says that she wants you to write her a Broadway musical, but it should be within a three note range" and goes on to worry that he isn't working (or earning) enough. Small stain at top margin 13. 1 pg. TLS (December 28, 1964) on Kathryn Crosby stationery: Letter thanking Van Heusen for gifts given to their children, signed "Kathryn & Bing" 14. 2 page retained copy of TL (August 23, 1966) from Van Heusen to Crosby: Van Heusen is nervous about the opening of his musical WALKING HAPPY, "[it's] in rehearsal now, and the feces has hit the fan. The panic is on." Goes on to recount a riotous night in New York with Sinatra ("the Dago") and Mia Farrow: "On his way to London the Dago stopped in New York long enough for Bennett Cerf and Leland Hayward to party him and his bride at '21'." They have a run-in with the paparazzi: "Negotiating the twenty or thirty paces between the two restaurants encompassed three fights with photographers and newsmen ... Frank pushed me into the oncoming traffic when I stepped in between." Van Heusen's opinion of Farrow and Sinatra's marriage: "I was only mildly surprised by the wedding. I had rooted for Mia (whom I adore) to grab him for SO long, that I was jumping with glee when they both called from Vegas shortly after the ceremony" and his opinion of Sinatra's behavior: "As for his reforming,--I doubt he'll ever drop his dukes in the presence of the press ... As for drinking,--you and I used to spill more than he consumes,--but I look for some reduction in the drunk days in the 'September of His Years', as Sam [Cahn] and I once described the aging Dago." The letter finishes with more talk of WALKING HAPPY, and commiseration over health concerns 15. 1-page TLS (July 24, 1957): from agent George Rosenberg to Van Heusen concerning screenplay of TUNNEL OF LOVE, with copy of typed Crosby letter to Rosenberg declining to work on the film, "There are so many sequences which are just basically salacious, I don't care how innocently you do them or how wholesome the people who are involved in these sequences, they just have to be bad for me"

"Published in 1969 but using collages dating from many years before, an therefore essentially a modernist book - show[s] him at his best....a surreal, erotic travel tale based on the Michelin Guide...ostensibly a journal and photo-album of a trip along the Brittany coast...Hugnet's photomontages are both complex and witty....This volume could be regarded as the last great romp of a 1930s surrealist, but Hugnet reminds us that the surrealists took their play seriously.         Lettres à Lou

Gallimard, Paris 1969 - [Correspondance]. (9035)] Plein chagrin vermillon, dos à quatre nerfs, couverture crème et dos conservés [Attributes: First Edition]

Autograph Letter Signed with Illustration on a picture postcard of Family Dog Productions, Sept. 8, 1969

Ginsberg writes to Magdalene (Leni) Sinclair regarding John Sinclair's imprisonment for marijuana use. He writes on the address side of the green and purple Family Dog postcard promoting the " Love Congress of Wonders concert, March 1969 at the Avalon Ballroom. Here, Ginsberg offers to "do what I can to publicize John's usefulness to life and the bum rap he's in...I'll send out the appeals...." He asks whether the Sinclair's phone was shut off due to non -payment of the bills then offers advise. "You should prepare weekly short news clips... Let me know what P.E.N. says...." He signs in full, "Allen Ginsberg." In pencil he adds the date and return address of Cherry Valley, NY. Above his corespondent's name, Ginsberg made a whimsical drawing in an oval shape, two wings on each side of the oval, eyes and the word, "airmail" drawn as if to be the mouth. Minor marginal tears to lower right edges. Arrested for possession of marijuana in 1969, Sinclair was given ten years in prison. The sentence was criticized by many as unduly harsh, and it galvanized a noisy protest movement led by prominent figures of the 1960s counterculture. Sinclair was eventually freed in December 1971, but he remained in litigation - his case against the government for illegal domestic surveillance was successfully pled to the US Supreme Court in United States v. U.S. District Court (1972).
