        A Domestic Animal.

London: Longmans, Green and Co., 1969 - Octavo. Original orange boards, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Spine slightly rolled, small mark to foot of rear board; an excellent copy in the bright jacket. First edition, first printing, the so-called "suppressed" edition. This edition was withdrawn before publication, rewritten, and reissued in 1970, as a result of a libel case involving the former Labour MP, and King's erstwhile friend, Tom Skeffington-Lodge. With a TLS from the author to Tom Driberg, journalist and MP, sending him the book and flippantly mentioning the libel action threatened by Skeffington-Lodge, who is referred to here as T.C. Radcliffe-Hall. He laments the unpleasantness but admits, "I suppose it was naughty of me." King had put into the book a scene based on Skeffington-Lodge's bid for a peerage. After writing to senior figures in the Labour Party, urging them to intercede on his behalf, Skeffington-Lodge received a one-line reply from Lord Attlee, expressing the hope that he would "get what he deserved"; Skeffington-Lodge took this at face value and read it aloud at a dinner party at which King was present. King then put this verbatim into A Domestic Animal, taking the precaution of disguising his original source as a female character named Dame Winifred Harcourt. Also present is a subsequent signed note from King imploring Driberg and other owners of advance copies to destroy them "without fail or return to me for destruction". The request has an unrelated but entertaining jotting by Driberg on the back. [Attributes: First Edition]

CALDER: FOUNDATION MAEGHT

Saint-Paul, France: Foundation Maeght, 1969. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Inscribed with enormous wit and affection to satiric artist and close friend Robert Osborn by Calder using a Calder quote excerpted from the book that is printed on ffe verso. The quote reads "One of the problems/ confronting me is to get enough/ free time to work/ and not to go around talking about it." Calder has taken the first line and inserted in bold blue ink a different completion of the line (in italics here) so that it reads "One of the problems is Bob Osborn('s) a very nice guy in the long run. Sandy"." With a postcard picturing three of Calder's sculptures in the outdoor collection of the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebaek, from Calder to Robert and Elodie dated by him July 13, 1987, postmarked from Denmark, in which Calder reports on how touring is like a tiring "campaign" ("oh to be 60 again!") and proclaims "the glorious Calders are by far the best at this fine museum." Alexander Calder, known to his friends since childhood as 'Sandy', was an American artist best known for his mobile sculptures. Championed by the Museum of Modern Art, his distinctive mobiles hang permanently there as well as premier institutions like the DC National Gallery. Commissioned to build sculptures and paint murals in several of Marcel Breuer's houses built in Litchfield County, CT. Calder, who lived in Roxbury in that county, Calder had many friends in the artistic community there, Robert Osborn and his wife Eloise being among the closest.

[1969] 1969 - January 4, 1968[1969]. A note addressed to legendary Random House editor Bertha Krantz, as "Dear Bert," thanking her for a card and then quickly adding that he has found two errors in the text of "PC" (Portnoy's Complaint), despite not having read the book through yet. He describes the errors (on pages 9 and 64) and asks if they can be corrected in the second printing and whether Bantam will print from the second printing. Signed: "Make love, not typos,/ Yrs, Philip." Roth's dating of this letter is itself likely a typo: the book's official publication was in February of 1969; the letter was likely written in January of 1969. A bibliographically significant letter, pertaining to Roth's best-known work. Folded for mailing; recipient's marginal mark; author's name on verso; near fine. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Portnoy’s Complaint.

New York: Random House, 1969. Signed limited first edition. Octavo, original cloth. One of 600 numbered copies signed by Philip Roth. Fine in a fine dust jacket. The slipcase is in fine condition. Along with Saul Bellow's Herzog, Philip Roth's Portnoy's Complaint defined Jewish American literature in the 1960s. Roth's masterpiece takes place on the couch of a psychoanalyst, an appropriate jumping-off place for an insanely comical novel about the Jewish American experience. Roth has written several great books--Goodbye, Columbus and When She Was Good among them, but it is perhaps Portnoy's Complaint for which he is best known. "Philip Roth has the fineset eye for the details of American life since Sinclair Lewis" (Stanley Edgar Hyman).

        Oberbaum Linkeck Almanach 1965-1968

Berlin: RKL Presse EUPS, 1969. First edition. 4to, [105] pp., photographically illustrated wraps. The Oberbaum Press was one of the earliest and most important independent presses in West Germany. It was founded by Hartmut Sander and Martin Dürschlag and operated out of a former shoemaker's shop at Oberbaumstrasse 5 in Kreuzberg, on the beautiful Oberbaum Bridge itself, famous for being used for spie exchanges. The press was initially devoted to new literature - "Pop- Und Provo-Poems", as termed in an early advertisment - and was associated with Rolf-Dieter Brinkmann (who appears in this volume) and Peter Handke, before becoming more explicitly political, and laying the groundwork for some of the most important underground magazines, such as Linkeck, which the press produced, and which was co-edited by Sander as well. The volume includes Provo content, as well as pieces by Rudi Dutschke, Rolf Dieter Brinkmann, Peter Handke, Kommune 1, Malcolm X et al. Displayed throughout is a radical and sophisticated approach to typography and layout, especially with regard to the use of superimposed photographs and the layering of typeset and holographic texts - a palimpsest that in its shifts seems to become a seismic document of the late 60's. A key document of the era. [Brown pp. 130-31] A clean, near fine copy showing some light rubbing to extremities and a couple of faint pencil notations along upper margin; a bright and better than usual example.

Buzz Aldrin's gold plated sun visor reflects the Lunar Module reflected in his gold-plated visor, Apollo 11.

20 July 1969 - Large-format vintage chromogenic print, 20.2 x 25.3 cm, on "A Kodak", [NASA negative number AS11-40-5903]. The most iconic picture taken on the Apollo 11 Mission. Astronaut Buzz Aldrin, lunar module pilot, stands in a crater as Neil Armstrong takes his photograph using a camera strapped to his chest. We see not only Apollo 11 reflected in Aldrin's visor, but also Neil Armstrong himself. This makes this photograph especially interesting - Neil Armstrong took all the photos thus Aldrin is invariably the subject, not Armstrong, the mission commander and the first man to step onto the moon. "Apollo 11 on the Moon - Astronaut Edwin E. Aldrin Jr., lunarmodule pilot, walks on the surface of the Moon near the leg of the Lunar Module during the Apollo 11 extravehicular activity. Astronaut Neil A. Armstrong, commander, took this photograph with a 70 mm lunar surface camera" (Text on the reverse).
