         The Hand Of The Enemy

Manila, Philippines: Regal Books/Erewhon Bookshop Distributors(1962). First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 120 pages. The author's breakthrough debut novel. One of the best Asian novels of the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a one-time-only print run as a hardcover original only. There is no ISBN. The First Edition is now rare. Presents Kerima Polotan's "The Hand of The Enemy". Her finest achievement. From a culture that is derivative at best, productive rather than creative, how is Polotan's masterpiece possible? It is important to keep in mind that at the time of its publication, the Philippines was one of the most prosperous nations in Asia, a vibrant, if fragile, democracy that enjoyed unprecedented economic growth (however limited, to this very day, to a tiny elite), American financial largesse to its only colony and World War II ally, and a culture that supported Philippine writing in English. The external factors that help make a masterpiece possible cannot be overestimated precisely because the latter comes into being to challenge a modernizing nation's intrinsic soul. Once compared to Sartre (wrongly) and Heinrich Boll (rightly), Polotan is an original: Going against the normative "naive-sentimental" grain, Polotan is an original: She writes un-sentimentally and scathingly about love, the impossible demands it makes on human beings, and its fundamental incompatibility not just with personal ambition, but with the harsh realities of life. For Polotan's memorably depicted protagonist Emma - she has the same name as Madame Bovary - and probably, for the Romantic-feminist writer herself, love is the sole reason for being. It's what we're here for. Its enemy, whose hand prevails in the end, is life itself. By all means, one should seize whatever saving grace life has to offer, be it the glory of literature, the pleasures of art, the consolation of religious faith, and most tangible of all, worldly success. Life is essentially a trade-off, and one must never ever have any illusions about the trade-offs one makes. Polotan saves her most withering words, in passages of great descriptive power, for those who think they can have it all. The bleakness of Polotan's vision is only somewhat relieved by the generosity of her soul. She cares about her characters, mourning rather than condemning their failings. Whereas almost everyone else writes in the "Creole" style (the flowery Philippine language infused with Spanish Baroque), her lean and elegant prose makes Polotan the greatest stylist in English the Philippines has ever produced. Polotan's tough-minded yet generous writing exposes the mediocrity of contemporary writing for what it is: Sterile prose, undergraduate philosophizing, Marvel Comics fantasy-narratives. "A man follows something more urgent than himself" (Kerima Polotan). Kerima Polotan died on August 19, 2011. She will not be replaced. An absolute "must-have" title for Kerima Polotan collectors. This title is a great book. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and despite its imperfection (closed and open tears on DJ; slight fading on DJ spine) is still in fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. A rare copy thus. The greatest Philippine writer in English of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER KERIMA POLOTAN TITLE IN OUR CATALOG).

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

London: Methuen & Co, 1962. First British edition of Kesey's classic first book. Octavo, original cloth. Lengthily inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For Joe: As I think I said on March 7, 1984, 'You got a nice daughter, Joe.' Ken Kesey, Sept. 1985." The recipient, became friends with Kesey after his daughter, who was a nurse treated Kesey's son in a fatal accident. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of rubbing. Jacket design by Kenneth Farnhill. Published in February 1962, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was a great critical and commercial success. Over the subsequent decades the book's reputation and readership swelled as millions recognized Kesey's psychiatric ward as a not-so-fantastic metaphor for a modern world in which bureaucracy and technology combine to diminish humanity, individuality and diversity. Adapted to the stage in 1963, with Kirk Douglas in the lead, and was the basis for the highly successful 1975 film directed by Milos Forman and starring Jack Nicholson. Considered to be one of the greatest films ever made, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest ranks number 33 on the American Film Institute's 100 Years, 100 Movies list. It was the second to win all five major Academy Awards (Best Picture, Actor in Lead Role, Actress in Lead Role, Director, and Screenplay) following It Happened One Night in 1934, an accomplishment not repeated until 1991 by The Silence of the Lambs. It also won numerous Golden Globe and BAFTA Awards.

         A Wrinkle In Time.

New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1962. Fourth printing of the author's Newbery award-winning novel. Octavo, original cloth. Warmly inscribed by Madeleine L'Engle on the title page. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Ellen Ruskin. At once a science fiction story, a philosophical meditation on the nature of Evil and Love and a coming-of-age novel, Wrinkle broke new ground in what was considered appropriate for young readers. Rejected by several publishers for being too complex, this title has amply proven L'Engle's belief that 'children are excited by new ideas' and has been credited with bringing science fiction into the mainstream of children's literature. This is L'Engle's best work" (Silvey, 401). A Wrinkle in Time is one of the most significant novels of our time. "A book that every person should read, a book that provides a road map for seeking knowledge and compassion even at the worst of times, a book to make the world a better place" (Cory Doctorow). It went on to win a Newbery Medal, Sequoyah Book Award, and Lewis Carroll Shelf Award, and was runner-up for the Hans Christian Andersen Award. It is the basis for the film directed by Ava DuVernay, starring Storm Reid, Reese Witherspoon, Zach Galifianakis, and Oprah Winfrey.

         Typed Letter Signed [TLS]

Oxford: np, 1962. First edition. framed. Very Good. SIGNED LETTER BY J.R.R. TOLKIEN REFERRING TO A POSSIBLE SEQUEL TO THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Written from Tolkien's Sandfield Road (Oxford) residence and addressed to Miss Miriam P. Hirsch of 677 West End Avenue, New York, NY, the letter, dated 16th April, 1962, reads in full: Dear Miss Hirsch, I am very sorry that my answer to your letter has been so long delayed. Thank you very much for writing to me. I am very pleased to hear that my works have given pleasure but I hope you will excuse me from writing more now. I am very busy and have little time to spare if I am ever to put ready for publication the sequel to The Lord of the Rings which I am being pressed to produce. Yours sincerely, [signed]J.R.R. Tolkien After the success of The Hobbit (1937), Tolkien's publishers (Allen and Unwin) requested he work on a sequel, which would, of course become the epic Lord of the Rings (1954-55). It was no wonder, then, that after the immense popularity of the Lord of the Rings Tolkien was implored to continue the saga of Middle Earth in the form of another sequel. In 1962, at the time of this letter, he was contemplating the direction of his new work and in this letter is most likely referring to what was to become known as "The New Shadow", a story, unfortunately, that would remain unfinished. Tolkien explained the fate of "The New Shadow" in a letter from 1964 to Colin Bailey: I did begin a story placed about 100 years after the Downfall [of Mordor], but it proved both sinister and depressing. Since we are dealing with Men it is inevitable that we should be concerned with the most regrettable feature of their nature: their quick satiety with good. So that the people of Gondor in times of peace, justice and prosperity, would become discontented and restless-while the dynasts descended from Aragorn would become just kings and governors-like Denethor or worse. I found that even so early there was an outcrop of revolutionary plots, about a centre of secret Satanistic religion; while Gondorian boys were playing at being Orcs and going round doing damage. I could have written a 'thriller' about the blog and its discovery and overthrow-but it would be just that. Not worth doing. (Carpenter, ed. Letters, 344). One page (8x10 inches). Headington, Oxford: April 16, 1962. Archivally matted and framed with a photo of Tolkien in the woods to an overall size of 13.75 x 21. Usual mailing folds, otherwise fine.

BV'.

         A Clockwork Orange

London: Heinemann, 1962. First edition. Original cloth, original dust jacket. Fine/Very Good. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE of one of the classics of the 20th century. "Like 1984, this is a book in which an entire social order is implied through language. And what language! To hint at the vile universe of the 15-year-old delinquent Alex and his murderous buddies, Burgess created 'nadsat,' a rich futuristic patois. 'Sinny' for 'cinema.' 'Viddy' for 'see,' 'horrorshow' for 'good' - from the Russian, khorosho, which gives you some idea of which political system has prevailed. The words locate him in a world of corrupted values, violence and boundless infantile indulgence. (His drug is 'milk plus.') When Alex is apprehended by the authorities and subjected to psychological conditioning to make him nauseated at any impulse towards violence, Burgess's book becomes a meditation on whether a world in which evil can be freely chosen might still be preferable to one in which goodness is compelled. Stanley Kubrick's coldly magnificent 'sinny' adaptation has sometimes threatened to overshadow this great novel. Don't let it happen" (Richard Lacayo, All-Time 100 Novels). The basis for the classic 1971 Stanley Kubrick film and with a final chapter that was omitted from US editions until 1986. First Issue: with black cloth binding and dust jacket with "16S NET" sticker and wider flaps. London: Heinemann, 1962. Octavo, original black cloth, original pictorial dust jacket by Barry Trengrove. Small ownership signature on front free endpaper. Book fine; dust jacket with mild fading to spine (as often), nearly invisible repaired closed tear near base of spine. An excellent copy of one of the most influential novels of the century.

A shade of fading on the spine edge, rubbed on the back panel (seemingly where a retangular sticker once was), and with four ghost marks from tape on the flaps. A square and sound copy with the black boards free of wear and still with bright gold lettering. No foxing to the pages. The ghost marks from the tape appear on the end papes as well. There is also some heavy erasing to the back end page the lead to some rubbing -- possibly from a restoration. Putting it all together this may have been a library copy, although there aren't any stamps that indicate it as such. I've done my best to photograph all of the wear so you'll see that if this were a library copy, it's one that (1) was poorly marked, and (2) hardly circulated.

Place of Negligence in the Law of Torts. (SIGNED BY ABRAHAM HARARI TO THE DEDICATEE, D. D. RAPHAEL.)

Sydney: Law Book Co. of Australasia, 1962. - FIRST EDITION. Original cloth. Inscribed: 'D. D. Raphael/with best wishes/A. Harari'. 'To D. D.' (printed on p. iii). The tortured academic career of Harari, who died of a brain tumor in 1972, is perhaps best understood in the context of the much more famous legal philosopher H. L. A. [Herbert Lionel Adolphus] Hart (1907-1992), the longtime focus of Harari's intense rage described in detail in Nicola Lacey, A Life of H. L. A. Hart: The Nightmare and the Noble Dream (Oxford, 2005). In the mid-1960s, Hart 'had been one of the examiners of an Israeli student, Abraham Harari's, doctoral thesis. Harari's work was on the place of negligence in the law of torts (the law of civil wrongs leading to compensation). It included some criticisms of Herbert's and Tony Honoré's arguments in Causation and the Law. It was referred back for substantial revision and resubmission. When finally resubmitted, the thesis was not awarded the doctoral degree. Harari, who had in any event been reluctant to modify a thesis to which he was strongly committed, felt that the decision was unjust. He blamed it on Herbert, and attributed it to Herbert's intolerance of criticism and of views different from his own. . . . [Harari] secured a post at the University of Tasmania, and in 1962 he published a book arising from his doctoral thesis: The Place of Negligence in the Law of Torts. He then moved to a post at Dundee. But the sense of injustice continued to rankle, and Harari worked out his resentment in several ways. He wrote Herbert a series of increasingly accusing and hostile letters. These letters have not survived, but they must have been extreme: Herbert confided to Brian Simpson that he feared Harari might try to kill him. Harari also began to write an essay, 'H. L. A. Hart and his Concept of Law (1961): An Open Letter to a Teacher of Jurisprudence'. The 'Open Letter' evolved in a number of stages: the original part was 15 pages long, but by the time Harari had finished it in 1972 it had reached 96 pages. It is made up of a coruscating and minute critique not only of Herbert's book but also of Herbert himself, interspersed with illustrative poems, biblical quotations, references to a wide range of philosophical sources from Aristotle to Wittgenstein via Hobbes, Hume, Mill, and Russell, asides to fellow teachers of jurisprudence, and quotations from reviews critical of The Concept of Law. . . . It would not have taken any special insight on the reader's part to recognize that there was a personal dimension to the attack: Are my strictures harsh, dear colleague? Do you detect something 'personal' in these lines? Would you rebuke me for the use of immoderate terms? You are perceptive. Would that you were just a little more perceptive! It is possible to criticise or attack a man's work without by implication criticising or attacking the man? Surely it is better to be conscious of and honest about what one is doing . . . Nor would it have taken a psychiatrist to realize that there was something obsessive about Harari's critique. By page 6 of his letter, he was still labouring over page 2 of The Concept of Law; by page 11, he had reached page 3. Herbert, however, was seldom a person to take adversity lightly, and he agonized miserably over how to respond to Harari's missives. . . . In the end, he followed friends' advice not to get further involved. What upset him was not so much any real concern about damage to his intellectual reputation as to the personal nature of the attack. Harari's story is a tragic one: not only because he devoted his considerable intellectual gifts to such bitter and unconstructive ends, but also because he turned out to be suffering from a brain tumour. He died shortly after the completion of the Open Letter. The Letter was never published, but remains in the possession of several recipients and has been deposited in a small number of university libraries' (Lacey, pp. 274-7).          The Lord of the Rings, 1962/63 Allen & Unwin UK 1st Editions in Custom Leather Slipcase

Allen & Unwin, London 1962 - 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. Comprised of The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. Published by George Allen & Unwin, 1962 & 1963, 1st Editions, 12th imp/10th imp/10th imp. An exceptionally nice set of first editions of this classic of fantasy literature. The set is housed in a custom full leather slipcase to show and protect. The set is in Near Fine condition, with small previous owners initials to the top corner of the front free endpaper, no other writing in the books. There are tape ghosts from the old style dustjacket protectors that have kept the dustjackets in beautiful condition, and also a mark to the flap of The Fellowship and The Two Towers, that may have been caused by the same tape, at least the position makes it appear that way. There is no foxing or offsetting in any of the books or to the endpapers as is common. The exterior cloth is clean and unmarked, with the gilt untarnished and bright. The books are clean and tight, and the maps are attached in each volume, and show no extra folds, but the first two have a minor tear at the mounting flap, now neatly repaired. The red topstain is not faded, and relatively uniform across all three volumes. The dustjackets are complete and the correct impression for the books. The dj's are in Near Fine condition with only minor rubbing and edgewear, mainly to the tips of the flap folds. The dustjackets show almost no tanning to the spines, much less than the norm. A lovely Near Fine set of this classic of fantasy literature. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Near Fine / Near Fine.          A Clockwork Orange

Heinemann, London 1962 - FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE of one of the classics of the 20th century. Original cloth, original dust jacket [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

Methuen & Co, London 1962 - First British edition of Kesey's classic first book. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
