         Confessions of an Advertising Man

New York: Atheneum, 1963. Scarce presentation copy in the folding jacket, inscribed by legendary Madison Avenue ad-man David Ogilvy. The dust jacket flaps advise the reader to "see inside... for samples of David Ogilvy's wizardry," and it unfolds to reveal six classic advertisements he created. Born in 1911 in England, David Ogilvy emigrated to America to become Associate Director of Dr. George Gallup's Audience Research Institute at Princeton. During the war, he was on Sir William Stephenson's staff in British Security Co-Ordination and served as Second Secretary at the British Embassy. After the war he founded the advertising agency Ogilvy, Benson and Mather. It continues today as Ogilvy & Mather. Known as "the father of advertising", Ogilvy attributed the success of his campaigns to meticulous research of consumer habits, a skill gained during his years at Gallup. 'Confessions of an Advertising Man' was a best seller, and is considered required reading in many modern advertising classes. This first edition consisted of 5,000 copies, most of which were heavily read and worn, and few of which are found inscribed. Some have suggested that Ogilvy served as the model for Don Draper in the series 'Mad Men.'. Jacket toned, a few small chips at ends of spine panel, short separation along upper joint where folded; cloth fresh and bright.

         Harry, the Rat with Women

New York: McGraw-Hill, 1963. 1 vols. 8vo. Dual cloth. Fine in chipped dust jacket. 1 vols. 8vo. Inscribed with a Cartoon. Feiffer's witty and touching inscription to the famed New York columnist, Leonard Lyons, extends over the first four preliminary pages, with an accompanying cartoon: "For -> Leonard -> Lyons -> -never a rat with a woman or anyone else." The running cartoon at the bottom of each page culminates in a drawing of a woman smiling contentedly before a large flower. Leonard Lyons was for many years one of New York's most prominent journalists. His column in the New York Post, "The Lyons' Den" was widely read and immensely popular during the many years since its commencement in 1934. Unlike many of his colleagues, however, Lyons was highly respected for his fairness and highmindedness. According to Ralph Blumenthal in STORK CLUB (Boston, 2000), "Lyons didn't believe in writing about romances and divorces. Nor, it was said, did he ever violate a confidence ... He corresponded with world leaders and literary giants ..." (p. 131).

         The Natural

London: Eyre & Spottiswoode, 1963. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine-/Fine-. First Impression of Malamud's first novel, a classic of baseball literature. 8vo: 248pp, including the addendum, "Some notes on the game of baseball," for British readers. Publisher's royal blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt with red baseball device; beautifully illustrated dust jacket, priced 21s, lettered in black and yellow. Moderate spotting to page edges and (lightly) rear panel of jacket, otherwise Fine. Yet another example of the value to be found in the graphically superior designs of most UK editions of American authors' works. First published in New York, in 1952, this is the story of Roy Hobbs, "modelled on Babe Ruth and Shoeless Joe Jackson. It tells of a hero's remarkable come-back after years of lost promise, and then the terrible self-ruining of his second chance." Hobbs is a prodigy whose career is sidetracked when he is shot by a woman whose motivation remains mysterious. "Towards the end of his painstaking revisions, at the last moment in the galley proofs, Malamud hit upon the sentence that clinched the meaning both of the book and of much of Malamud's own struggling career: 'We have two lives, Roy, the life we learn with and the life we have after that.' Writing was Malamud's second life." (Literary Encyclopedia) Filmed in 1984 with Robert Redford. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

Il y a" - INSCRIBED SCREENPRINT TRIAL PROOF

Gaston Puel, Veilhes 1963 - "Il y a by Jacques Berne." Unique screenprint, signed with a personal note and identified "epreuve d'essai"  upper left, 17 November 1978. 13 5/8" x 20".  From the collection of Patrick J. Eddington, a friend of the artist. Archivally framed under UV-plexi. The work was conceived and later printed for the book of poetry by Jacques Berne illustrated by Jean Dubuffet. There was an edition of 80 signed and numbered books, as well as another 99 that were not signed or numbered. The present screenprint was prepared in advance of the official publication. This is a later work by the French painter, sculptor, and writer whose idealistic approach to aesthetics embraced so called "Art Brut" ("Raw Art" or "Low Art") and eschewed traditional standards of beauty in favor of what he believed to be a more authentic and humanistic approach to image-making.  Purportedly inspired by a doodle he made while on the telephone in 1962, Dubuffet began creating new work in the style he called Hourloupe. He would fill entire pages or canvases with fluid scribble-like lines in densely packed, all-over compositions. Dubuffet explained that these forms evoked the manner in which objects appear in the mind; a crowded jumble of images and emotions. As he continued to experiment, Dubuffet did not limit himself to two-dimensional surfaces, but extended his running lines to three-dimensional sculptures and entire environments. This style would preoccupy Dubuffet for decades.
