         Portfolio One The Seasons

San Francisco: Sierra Club,, 1963. Folio. 12 original dye-transfer prints, dry-mounted as issued. With two copies of the title and limitation page (as usual). Housed in a linen portfolio with ties, gilt titles to front panel. A fine copy. First edition, first printing, of this fine suite of colour nature photographs. "As its name implies, the dye transfer process literally involves transferring dyes (cyan, magenta, and yellow) in succession and in careful registration onto a sheet of gelatin-coated paper. Porter remained committed to the dye-transfer process, both before and after the invention of simpler and more commonly used color papers, because it delivered richly colored prints and allowed him to control the exact hues and contrast of each final print" (Eliot Porter Collection Guide, Amon Carter Museum of American Art website). Having pursued colour photography since the 1930s, Porter found his first real publishing success with the Sierra Club, who published his Thoreau-inspired photoessay, In Wildness is the Preservation of the World, in 1962. Porter served as director of the Sierra Club, an early leader in the American conservationist movement, from 1965 to 1971.

Comments. Original Manuscript by George Seferis.

      - Two page autographed handwritten poem completely in the hand of George Seferis. Translated from the Greek: "The porch had darkened, by our side there was a rush in the two hearts had sheltered a confession. And the voice was entrapped in our lips, and we made mistakes and only from the depths of the body, Oh my God, we were waiting for a blessing. Darkness was blowing in the house and from the light of the star oh, your hair's magnet remember the inaccessible angel. With the fast rings on the floor suddenly like an air blowing in the thought that we were reading the Bible with a prayer. Woman, my soul's stranger, your delight was left to me, nice beloved woman tonight this foolish today. And the black rings of your eyes, and the nights horror. Bend to get into the case again, blade of my silence, chimera. George Seferis." Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 16 inches by 19 inches. In 1963, George Seferis was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature "for his eminent lyrical writing, inspired by a deep feeling for the Hellenic world of culture." Seferis was the first Greek to receive the prize. While Seferis has sometimes been considered a nationalist poet, his 'Hellenism' had more to do with his identifying a unifying strand of humanism in the continuity of Greek culture and literature. Warmly inscribed by the author in the year of publication on the front free endpaper, "Willis Shank from David Ogilvy with gratitude and admiration November 1963." Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of rubbing. On the verso of the dust jacket there are "samples of David Ogilvy's wizardry," and it unfolds to reveal six advertisements he created. It also became an international bestseller, translated into 14 languages.          Koekblik [cookie tin]

Amsterdam, NV de Vereenigde Blikfabrieken (Verblifa), 1963. Tin icosahedron box with cardboard bottom inserted. Diameter 17 cm. l This uniquely shaped box was designed by the Dutch graphic artist Maurits Escher (1898-1972) on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of Verblifa, then one of the largest producers of tin objects in the Netherlands. It has been embossed with a typical "Escherian" regular pattern of seashells and starfish; a pattern Esscher used only here. This is the so-called regular convex, or Platonic icosahedron, which is the most regular one. Few of these 20-faced cookie tins have survived. Apart from some spots to top part, this tin is in good condition, with a pentagonal cardboard bottom that is seldom seen, but probably original. Bool, p. 151.
