DIDEROT, Denis.
Adams, Bibliographie des oeuvres de Denis Diderot A6 (pp. 98-109); CCfr 3 copies); Diderot, Contes (1963), item 12 (p. 206); Johansson, Études de Denis Diderot (1927), p. 197 (cf. p. 30). First edition of the works of Denis Diderot (1713-1784), published fourteen years after his death. Diderot, one of the widest ranging and most creative minds of the Enlightenment, is best known as the motive force behind and author of many articles in his 28-volume Encyclopédie (1764-1772), which occupied him for more than twenty years, but he published works on a wide range of subjects before and after the Encyclopédie. The present 15 volumes, published from Diderot's manuscripts (including correspondence) and totalling about 7500 pages, therefore covers plays, novels and poetry as well as essays on philosophy, mathematics (including music), literature, art and religion, and includes correspondence with numerous men and women, including Voltaire. Although his Encyclopédie articles are not included, many were based on or carried further in publications included here, and 220 pages of vol. III are devoted to the Encyclopédia. Diderot's Encyclopédie, though enormously influential, left him in financial straits. The French government banned it and the French establishment shunned him as a radical, but from 1773 to his death he worked under the patronage of Catharine the Great of Russia, who bought his library and paid him to oversee it in Paris, giving him the freedom to pursue his literary and scholarly interests. In very good condition, with only some minor foxing, an occasional quire very s … [Click Below for Full Description]

1963. Eduard Pernkopf (November 24, 1888 - April 17, 1955) was an Austrian professor of anatomy who later served as rector of the University of Vienna, his alma mater. He is best known for his seven-volume anatomical atlas, Topographische Anatomie des Menschen (translated as Atlas of Topographical and Applied Human Anatomy; often colloquially known as the Pernkopf atlas or just Pernkopf), prepared by Pernkopf and four artists over a 20-year period.[1] While it is considered a scientific and artistic masterpiece,[2] with many of its color plates reprinted in other publications and textbooks, it has been in recent years found that Pernkopf and the artists working for him, all of them ardent Nazis, used executed political prisoners as their subjects.

João Cabral de Melo Neto (Dir)
Madrid. Embajada del Brasil, 1963. In-8. #1 June 1962 - #52 1981 (Laks 1-5, 7, 8, 10) 44 Isues. Wrappers. In the month of June 1962, the first issue of a magazine that, little by little, would gain prestige among those interested in Ibero-American culture and, especially, the Brazilian one, took to the streets. It was the Brazilian Culture Magazine, whose shadow promoter was the poet João Cabral de Melo Neto, then on a consular mission in Spain, and whose first director was also the poet Ángel Crespo, one of the greatest Brazilian who has had our country. It was affirmed that it was necessary ‘to create a publication that, exceeding the scope of the merely informative or news, made available to Spanish scholars a compendium, or perhaps a reflection, of the Brazilian cultural event’. Confirming these expectations, in that first issue of June 1962 you could find works signed by Gilberto Freyre, João Cabral de Melo Neto, José Guilherme Merquior or Otto Lara Resende, as well as translations of its director Ángel Crespo and Dámaso Alonso, who poured to Castilian a selection of poems by Murilo Mendes. And this was, since then, the tonic of the magazine, which promptly informed interested readers the reality, in the past and present, of the cultural production of Brazil. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

E.E. Cummings
New York: Harcourt, Brace & World, 1963. Some pages mildly creased, slight wear to some edges, smudged publisher's label. To be published by Harcourt, Brace & World (New York 1963), these are the bound galleys (here called Advance Uncorrected Proofs) in red wrappers decorated with the publisher's logo, comb-bound in white plastic, printed on rectos only. Some pages mildly creased, slight wear to some edges, smudged publisher's label, else about fine, though in ebay terms probably Very Good. Letter laid in from New York Herald Tribune Book Editor to poet John Ciardi thanking him for agreeing to review the book. According to the book dealer from whom I bought this copy, the few ink notes in text are in all likelihood Ciardi's. Harcourt proofs in this format are quite scarce, suggesting a very small print run. Rare. [Attributes: First Edition]

BRACCELLI, [Giovanni Battista]. Tristan Tzara, intr.
Alain Brieux, Editeur, Paris, 1963. Two volumes chemised in a slipcase with printed label on front board. Vol 1: perfect-bound printed wrappers. 40 pp. "Propos sur Braccelli," by Tristan Tzara. Fold out artist's alphabet, with note by Andre Jammes. "L'Avenure d'un Livre" by Alain Brieux. Notes and bibliography. Vol 2: imitation limp vellum wrappers with ties, a full facsimile of the etchings, reproduced from the only known complete copy, owned by Lessing Rosenwald. One of 500 numbered copies printed (of a total edition of 525 copies). Braccelli's Bizzarie di varie figure was originally printed in 1624 in Livorno. The depiction of a variety of human forms constructed from objects, shapes or landscapes (racquets, compasses, brooms, diamonds, etc) anticipates the Surrealists, hence Tzara's introduction. Chemise fragile at joints; two ties on the vellum volume broken, else fine. From the collection of Alvin Eisenman, graphic designer and Yale professor, with a brief handwritten note laid in presenting the book to him.

Despite the initial worry that she might not have "political appeal", she proved popular among international dignitaries. In addition to these well-publicized trips during the three years of the Kennedy administration, she traveled to countries including Afghanistan, Austria, Canada, Colombia, United Kingdom, Greece, Italy, Mexico, Morocco, Turkey, and Venezuela. In 1975, six months after the death of her second husband Aristotle Onassis, Jacqueline Kennedy returned to work as a consulting editor for Viking Press, earning a salary of $200 per week. Sendak, Maurice
Harper & Row, [New York], 1963. A page proof of the first edition (lacking Library of Congress number, as one had not yet been assigned). With faint scattered creases to the edges, else fine - quite a lovely and rare thing. The entirety of the book was printed on a single sheet, recto and verso, about 58" x 42". These proofs were a late-stage juncture at which to correct or to change any aspect of the book. Printers' marks along the edges indicate the registration of the various ink runs (CMYK). There were registration problems through the whole of the first printing; the book was not properly printed until April 1964. The present copy exhibits no such problems of registration. We know of two other copies: one that had been at the Rosenbach but is now back with the Maurice Sendak Foundation, and the other on the market. Where the Wild Things Are would go on to win the Caldecott Medal in 1964. Purchased from the Riverrun Bookshop in Hastings-on-Hudson, which was then owned by Frank Scioscia, sales executive for junior books at Harper. Sendak has described this as the middle in a trilogy of child development, preceded by In the Night Kitchen and followed by Outside Over There. Hanrahan A58 (although she does not mention this state). Surpassingly rare, and therefore not in any bibliographies or catalogues. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

John F. KENNEDY]
No Publisher Amherst 1963. Set of Original Black & White snapshots of President John F. Kennedy. Amherst College, Frost Library Groundbreaking. 33 original glossy (3 x 4) black and white snapshots of the event featuring President John F. Kennedy. attending the groundbreaking ceremony for the Robert Frost Memorial Library at Amherst College on Saturday, October 26, 1963. Several photos of Kennedy in the crowd, and at the podium. Several photos of the press corps, television cameras, and numerous photos of the crowd. Earlier in the day, President Kennedy and poet Archibald MacLeish received Honorary Doctor of Laws degrees at the Convocation ceremony and both gave speeches honoring the memory of the poet, Robert Frost. Kennedy also spoke later in the day at the groundbreaking. On both occasions, the President's remarks were addressed to the significance of Robert Frost and of art and artists generally for the United States and for the world. The event turned out to be one of President Kennedy's last public appearances before he was assassinated in November 1963. An estimated 10,000 people were on campus that day to witness the events. President Kennedy's speech at the Groundbreaking was approximately four minutes long. In it he told the crowd that Frost had warned him "not to let the Harvard in me get to be too important."

KENMOCHI, Kazuo
Tokyo: Inoue Shoten, 1963. First Edition. Quarto. The first book by photojournalist Kazuo Kenmochi, SIGNED by him, that details drug culture in Japan in the early 60s: from production, to distribution, addiction and finally incarceration. The images are crisp, stark, frightening and intimate, all traits one might associate with Larry Clark or Nan Goldin, yet Kenmochi's intention was purely documentary. Predating Araki and Moriyama, this arresting work remained under the radar until recently. (Parr / Badger, v3, 82.) Fine in a near fine jacket, very good publisher's card slipcase, age-toned and rubbed at the extremities; lacking the scarce obi. The first signed copy I have handled. 1963. A complete run of the avant-garde journal, under the editorial direction of Riewart Tode and Hartmut Konig, offering cutting-edge poetry, prose, and criticism, some of which was informed by radical politics, presented in a rough-hewn, experimental manner, with some of the writings in typescript, some in the hand of the author, and some in various other formats including abstract concrete poems, accompanied by numerous original graphic works (some in color), many of which are signed by the artists. Various sizes and formats: 4to., oblong 4to., 8vo. Stapled wrpps. and perfect bound. Last couple of pages of issue no. 0 separated from staples but present, some minor foxing to cover. Wanderup, Germany 1963-1968. Each issue published in a very limited edition, ranging up to 200 copies. A very rare and ambitious journal reflecting the tumultuous mood of the mid-1960's, influenced by the Beat movement in the United States. Literary contributors include U. Raschke, Tim Ulrichs, K. D. Goerdeler, P. G. Hübsch, V. Scherliess, V. Braun, and Ingo Cesaro; graphics are by Jochen-Harro Bierzunski, K.-O. Kahrman, Tim Ulrichs, Jane Balsgaard, Norbert Richter, et al. Presented in various formats, mostly on rough paper printed recto only; the exception is issue #7/8, which is perfect bound, printed recto and verso, and presents an anthology of writings by 39 authors, all against the war in Vietnam. Very scarce; as of May 2019, WorldCat locates only three complete runs in North America. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Jim Mahan; Derek Bayes; John F Kennedy; Harold Wilson; Life Magazine
New York & Washington DC: Life Magazine, 1963 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 26x34cm. Commemorative presentation folder of LIFE photographs of Harold Wilson's visit to President Kennedy's White House in April 1963. The 30 vintage photographs were taken by two LIFE photographers, Jim Mahan in Washington and Derek Bayes back in the United Kingdom and presented by the magazine to Harold Wilson in the summer of 1963. The 12 American images are 10x13 inches, the 18 British images slightly smaller; all are loosely housed in plastic pockets with a printed title page presenting the large red spiral bound volume to Wilson: 'From The Editors and Photographers of Life'. The photographs by Jim Mahan record Harold Wilson's inaugural April 1963 visit to Washington including two fine images of the future Prime Minister meeting the American President. John F Kennedy and Harold Wilson are pictured together in the West Wing Colonnade on April 2: a landscape format image shows the two men standing silently, credited to 'Mahan' in pencil on the verso, with the date of printing given as 'Jun 27 1963' and a LIFE copyright stamp. A second landscape format photograph shows the much taller US President looking pensively at the British politician. The remaining 10 images of Wilson from his Washington visit show him with UN Ambassador Adlai Stevenson and other politicians in the White House and then addressing the National Press Club on 4 April. Additionally there is a more reflective solo image of Wilson refilling his trademark pipe in Washington. There are 18 further LIFE photographs of W … [Click Below for Full Description]

Though some are candid, many of the photographs are well-composed. Included in this album are real photograph postcards of the author's family. The latter photographs are still candid shots of different family members around the home. The second album is from 1916 through 1924 and features various shots of student and teacher life at St. Margaret's Boarding School. The author takes several pictures of the different cast members in drama shows throughout the years at St. Margaret's, often featuring l … [Click Below for Full Description]
