Fine copy in Very Good plus dust jacket (light wear to extremities, tiny bit of soil to back panel else very nice with a fully red spine panel, rare thus). Inscribed in 1986 both by Stephen Sondheim & actor/cult film director Paul Bartel. The third signature is that of Critt Davis, actor and acting coach. J.R.R. Tolkien
Great Britain: Houghton Mifflin, 1963. Shipped with USPS Priority Mail. Beautiful copy of the Hobbit in the overall 13th printing, of which only 2,500 copies were made. These early editions are becoming more collectible and valuable as the popularity has grown even further with blockbuster cinema. The book is tight and has nice covers, as shown. The inside maps are clean. This is a US edition by Houghton Mifflin. Up through the end of the second edition, Houghton Mifflin bought their pages from Allen Unwin in Great Britain, and bound them in their own binding. The dust jacket is original and 13th impression is stated. The book is identified by the color of the covers which differentiated with each printing, this being a lovely blue. Also, since the pages were purchased from great Britain by Houghton Mifflin, this is stated in the book "printed in great Britain." I have attached a picture of that page. When the third edition came about and was mass produced, these boards completely changed. This is the US 13th printing. 2,500 copies only. I have recently sold a very special eighth overall printing of The Hobbit. I have a few more additional copies of the hobbit, from early second editions that I have listed now! I ship within three business days of receiving payment. Thank you for looking! Gator!

Miller, Henry
Grove Press, 1963. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine / Very Good. A fine first US printing inscribed and dated by the author, Henry Miller, in a very good dust jacket. First printing of Grove Press hardcover edition. Black quarter-cloth, gray/green marbled paper boards, gilt spine lettering, gilt front cover facsimile author signature, black top-stain, cream endpapers. Dust jacket price 5.00. INSCRIBED by MILLER on the half-title page. Housed in a custom-made collectors slipcase. "Written during the same period as "Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn", and banned in the English-speaking world upon its publication in Paris in 1936, "Black Spring" is one of Miller's finest achievements, and arguably his most distinguished book from a stylistic point of view. It consists of a number of linked episodes describing some of the crucial years in his personal saga, from recollections of his childhood in Brooklyn to his time in Paris. Imbued with the spirit of Miller's life experience, "Black Spring" is a linguistic tour de force which brings together the American author's greatest merits." "In the second book of Miller's first trilogy, 'Black Spring', Miller abandons the novelistic pretense of telling any single story and instead creates a kind of collage of sketches, portraits, vignettes, essays, and poems-in-prose that once again combine to reveal the author in all his prodigious originality. This is the book, if the uninitiated reader can suspend the desire for conventional narrative and surrender to the spell of Miller's voice, that may be the best one-volume introduction to the … [Click Below for Full Description]

1963 March on Washington + 1968 Poor People's Campaign
1963. This is certainly one of the largest -- if not the largest -- archives of contemporary documentation of both the 1963 March on Washington and the Poor People's Campaign in private ownership; furthermore, the archive provides key information about the development of American Civil Rights before, during, and after these pivotal moments in American history. The archive -- as a repository of raw data -- allows researchers to contextualize the two Marches in within the White American psyche at that time. Page after page is filled with "news features" that in general seem laughably unimportant now in comparison to the nascent Civil Rights movement. In many instances, the reader's attention is drawn not to the articles concerning Civil Rights, but to the ubiquitous advertisements for consumer goods and merchandise such as expensives clothing, cars, food, and furniture: arguably the real preoccupation of White America in the 1960s.This archive came to us from one of the original protesters at the March on Washington, Louis Ryan (1913-2011). At the time of the March, Ryan was a Dominican priest; he separated from the Order in 1965, married in 1972, and together with his wife established L.J. Ryan Books of Columbus, Ohio. Lou undertook an in-depth study of the events before, during, and after the March, and in doing so assembled this extraordinary collection of contemporary newspaper accounts and related ephemera, all carefully stored and organized. Higgins, Dick
np, 1963. np: nd [c. 1963-64]. Carbon from typescript, denoted with a "b' in red ink at upper margin of first leaf, with numerous changes, deletions, additions, and other changes throughout in red ink in Higgins' hand. Provenance; from the archive of the artist and musician Dan Lauffer, who was a correspondent of Higgins. Pagination; 1-9, 10a, 10b, 11-15, 16a, 16b, 17-45, 46, 46b, 47-56, 56b, 57-60, 61a, 61b, 62, 62b, 62c, 62d, 63-67, 68a, 68b, 69-71, 71b, 72-76, 76b [despite errors in consecutive numbering, the text is in all cases complete and consecutive]. With a flattened example of the dust jacket from the book. Carbon typescript, with extensive corrections and emendations in Higgins' hand, of the book that launched the Something Else Press, and a key, early exposition of the birth of Fluxus and the New Arts. Higgins originally intended this book to be publishe by George Maciunas, but delays finally inspired Higgins to start his own press, the Something Else Press, and make this the first book, bound dos-a-dos with Jefferson's Birthday. The corrections, additions, and strike-throughs are a valuable insight into the development of the manuscript and Higgins' writing practice, documenting numerous passages which were changed in the published version. In one case, on p. 73, a full 21 lines are struck out, and do not appear in the published edition, though they completely legible here (and are partially about the Holiday Season) A cursory examination of other changes show most, but not all, to have been reflected in the published work. A rare and revealing state of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pasadena CA: Pasadena Art Museum. Near Fine in Near Fine dj. 1963. First Edition. Stapled wraps. [beautiful condition, with just a few traces of wear at the corners; in the original clear acetate dust jacket, similarly nice]. A beautiful, near-pristine copy of the original catalogue for one of the most notable West Coast art exhibitions of its day, the first U.S. retrospective of the work of French-born artist Marcel Duchamp, presented in 1963 by the Pasadena Art Museum under its legendary then-acting director Walter Hopps. Duchamp, despite his enormous and continuing influence on the development of what came to be called conceptual art, had "ceased to perform as an artist" circa 1923, and had subsequently devoted himself largely to writing and to studying and playing chess. His work was "rediscovered" in the late 1950s by the new generation of American abstract artists, among them Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg and others, including some of the artists that Hopps had championed, first at his Ferus Gallery in L.A. (co-founded with Ed Kienholz in 1957) and then at Pasadena. Duchamp, then in his 70s, had never been the subject of a comprehensive retrospective, and proved to be an enthusiastic participant in the enterprise, which ultimately gathered 114 pieces from two dozen collectors and institutions, with several items loaned by Duchamp himself. Duchamp attended the show's invitational preview on October 7 (with Ed Ruscha, Billy Al Bengston, and Andy Warhol also in the room), which was summed up by an L.A. Times headline: "They Came, They Saw -- D … [Click Below for Full Description]

1963. Quite scarce copy of this early work from the late, futurist concept artist of Bladerunner, Aliens, and Tron fame, Syd Mead. Early in his career, he worked in industrial design for Ford, US Steel, Allis Chalmers, and others. This work was done for Allis Chalmers in 1963 and contains 11, 2-page illustrations with descriptions of the company's many developed uses of power. This copy is very good with slight age toning along bottom edges of boards, and bumping to spine ends, corners, and edges. The scarce jacket is very good and housed in a protective cover. It shows some wear to edges and corners and a couple small tears to front and rear panels. Overall a nice copy of this beautiful and hard to find work from Syd Mead. Tzara, Tristan
Alain Brieux, Paris, 1963. Oblong 4to. A limited first edition of 500 copies, this being number 243. Slipcase holds a matching hardcover chemise, which includes two booklets. The first is Tristan Tzara's text "Propos sur Bracelli", with a fold out artist's alphabet. The second is a facsimile of the Bizzarie etchings by 17th-century Florentine artist Giovanni Battista Braccelli, reproduced from the only known complete copy, of American bibliophile Lessing Rosenwald. In Very Good condition with slipcase fairly clean and unmarked, except for some extremely light handling marks to the lower left corner and a small tear near the opening. Matching chemise is clean and square, with some minor foxing to the interior white lining. Booklet containing Tzara's text shows some light surface wear to the wraps with interior pages crisp and clean. Fold out with alphabet shows some very light tearing near one of the creases from being unfolded. Booklet containing the suite of etchings shows significant foxing to the imitation limp vellum wrappers, which are slightly bent to the fore-edge on both sides. Interior pages are clean with just a bit of creasing to the first page from the ties in the binding. Overall, still a solid example of this scarce item. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
