         Rivista studi tradizionali

, - Rivista studi tradizionali. , , AA. VV. Recipient of the Nobel Prize (1913) for literature, Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) was born in an affluent Bengali family. He was a versatile genius and developed an acute sensibility towards various art forms, literature, poetry, dance and music. Tagore’s journey as a painter began in his late sixties as an extension to his poetry. Though he had hardly any formal training in art, he developed a highly imaginative and spontaneous visual vocabulary, enhanced by a sound understanding of the visual practices of modern western art and primitivism. His first images emerged from revision marks on his manuscripts that he distorted into animal shapes - slightly crude renderings of fantastical animals. On his birth centenary of in 1961, the Indian government—at the personal initiative of its prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, who had known and revered Tagore in the 1930s commissioned a portfolio of collotype reproductions of some of Tagore’s more than 2,000 paintings and drawings. They were printed by the renowned Ganymed Press. So fine was the quality that when the collotype reproductions were exhibited at the Commonwealth Institute in London, some visitors took them for the original works. Tagore said his paintings did not contain “any interpretation of an idea or representation of fact”. This might be true for the animal images and the landscapes, but can hardly be said to be true for his studies of veiled women. The Ganymed Press were Collotype printers, in London between 1947 and 1963. The firm owed its origins to Ganymed Graphische Anstalt of Berlin, founded in the early years of the 20th century by Bruno Deja, a printer, and the art historian Julius Meier-Graefe. The Berlin works was re-established after wartime bombing with the help of the British publishing firm Lund Humphries and the New Statesman newspaper; Deja, in turn, advised the London firm set up by Lund Humphries and the New Statesman and provided trained craftsmen. The firm was run by Bernhard Baer (1905-83) and his wife Anne. Baer presented a set of these collotypes to the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1961. A fine set with a couple of spots to the margins on one or two of the collotypes.

I don't wanna miss Mississippi - autograph manuscript score from the collection of Jack Teagarden.

New York: , 1961. Large oblong folio (440 × 180 mm), red ownership stamps of Jack Teagarden on front and rear covers, along with the ink-stamped title and additional small stamp "Arr. by Sid Feller", dated May 25, 1961 in pencil. 10-page manuscript in graphite and red pencil, scored for trumpet, clarinet, trombone, drums, piano and bass. Staples rusted and with some associated discolouration, folded at the centre, else very good. Autograph manuscript musical arrangement of the popular song by Seger Ellis in the hand of Sid Feller. Teagarden's wife, Addie, gave this copy to a friend, explaining that it was apparently was used by Teagarden for his 1961 recording of this song, which appeared on his Misery and the Blues LP of that year. The American musician, conductor and arranger Sid Feller worked with Teagarden in the 30s, and again after the Second World War, before becoming a record producer, arranger and conductor for first Capitol Records and then ABC, working with such artists as Peggy Lee, Mel Torme, Jackie Gleason, Nancy Wilson, Dean Martin, Edye Gorme and Paul Anka. In 1960, he began a long collaboration with Ray Charles following Charles' departure from Atlantic Records. Charles' style changed considerably with his move to ABC. To die-hard R & B fans, the shift to a more mainstream repertoire and the introduction of string and vocal choir arrangements was criticised, and Feller took much of the blame. Charles, however, not only made a conscious choice to broaden his approach but gave Feller much of the credit for making it possible. On the breakthrough album, Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music, Charles said, "Sid researched the hell out of it and came up with 250 tunes. I picked the ones I liked, and of the ones I picked, they were all new to me except 'Bye Bye, Love'". The album produced Charles' biggest career hit, 'I can't stop loving you'. Charles was later to remark, "If they call me a genius, Sid Feller is Albert Einstein".

This elusive Book By someone I don't recognize. Best, Larry McMurtry." Moskowitz is a long-time book dealer who was a partner with Joseph the Provider for many years. Included with the book is an unrelated handwritten letter (in its original envelope) on McMurtry's business ("Booked Up") letterhead, which reads as follows: "14 Oct 03. Dear Mr. Loblolly (i.e., Moskowitz) Next Time you're in A C (i.e., Archer City) remind me to show you the 1st issue of item 145 in cat 21 -- one of which luckily I have. Best, L.". Signed by Author. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good.

[Photo Albums]: Two Albums of a Colonial Police Officer serving in Northern Rhodesia

Africa, 1961. Fine. Two string-tied oblong albums measuring 12" x 14" and 10" x 14". A collection of 295 black and white or color photographs affixed to stiff black paper measuring 2.25" x 3.5" to 6.5" x 8.5", with captions. Both albums are fine with fine photographs. Two photo albums from a colonial police officer with squad 39/60 while serving in Northern Rhodesia from 1961, before independence, to 1965 when Zambia was formed. Both albums are extensively captioned with hand drawn maps as well as ephemera tipped-in and kept as documents detailing his time in Africa. The first album begins, "on the afternoon of 4 February 1961 I flew out over the coast of Sussex in a Vickers Viscount of British United Airways bound for Northern Rhodesia." It shows photos of the barracks and recruitment offices as well as squadrons of officers including some native Africans used as constables who had historically been allowed reluctantly to participate in the police force by the British. The album shows the leisure time at the barracks as well. Here officers are shown playing Karamoja, an African version of Rugby, with native Rhodesians, playing guitars and singing at the mess hall. At the Ndola location police can be seen participating in riot drills and parades. The "main location," as it's captioned, included a mosque, market, and a Catholic church. The second album starts in 1962 with a trip to "visit friends in Fort Rosebery" which includes a hand drawn map of the territory. The photos show men standing around the officers club before returning to their posts. One page shows a "day of peace" which resulted in a football (soccer) match between the Police Reserve and the Regulars. In February of 1963 the officer took a trip to Mombasa, Kenya, marked here with a small map. He took in some sightseeing, drinking, hiked in the jungle with friends, and visited a Giriama village. The country and natural beauty can be seen here with photos of the jungle, Indian Ocean, and various rivers. Later in the album the officer's "annual pistol shoot" is documented, which included women (as participants, not targets). One photo of an African prisoner is captioned, "Our adulterer. He was beaten up by a crowd after fornicating with somebody's wife." The political unrest of the region is shown through pictures of protests with African's holding signs decrying the British government, stating the terrible unemployment rate, and telling them to "quit Africa." The album ends in 1965 with a final group shot of the company which followed a page captioned, "thank God we're still British."A large accumulation of photographs and firsthand accounts of the waning days of British involvement in Africa.

Typed letter signed "Moshe Dayan", in Hebrew, as Minister of Defense, on official letterhead, 1969, responding to a series of questions from Knesset member Avraham Werdinger (a photocopy of Werdinger's letter is present). According to these items foreign citizens are already present in the terrorist bases. I will thank His Honor if he replies:[ 1. Did the security forces capture terrorists whose citizenship is not of a Arabic country? 2. If so - from what countries? 3. Did the interrogation of the terrorists captured reveal they trained together with citizens of other countries? 4. According to our information - Do terrorists from Algiers and Sudan reside in Sounthern Lebanon? Dayan's replies: "In accordance with paragraph 41 of Kenesset regulations I refuse to reply to questions 3-4 in your question 8629, because I think the answers might harm the country's interests.".[ 2.)          Thunderball.

London: Jonathan Cape, 1961 - Octavo. Original dark brown boards, titles to spine gilt, skeletal hand design on front board in blind. With the pictorial dust jacket. A little foxing to top edge, faint tape residue to endpapers. An excellent copy in the bright jacket, with small mark and nick to head of spine, tiny tape repair to verso. First edition, first impression. Ian Fleming's novel Thunderball incorporated material from an unproduced screenplay he had worked on in 1958 in collaboration with Kevin McClory, Jack Whittingham, and Ivar Bryce, with the result that Fleming found himself in a well-publicised case in the High Court defending himself against McClory's accusations of plagiarism, though Fleming and McClory eventually settled out of court.          Three typed letters signed

three pages (approximately 200 words) 28 December 1961 - 31 May 1962, New York - To the writer, editor and publisher Neville Braybrooke. The first thanking him for an inscribed copy of his novel The Idler and wishing him success. The second thanks him for a copy of The Wind and the Rain, and regrets that she let her contribution: "Galerie Religieuse get by with errors, spelling for one, fourfold. And I have `With long sheaved wings' when it should be `In'" and sends a corrected copy (no longer present) in case there should be a second printing. The third letter thanks Braybrooke for a kind review: "particularly gratifying to have The Antiphon remarked, as the mental resistance to, as the Swedish name it, `a play for the rich in spirit' is phenomenal. Some not only do not study it, they do not read it with attention. One critic thinks Titus the violater (sic) of Miranda. I do wish Dylan Thomas could have recorded parts of Nightwood: the very best sort of voice for certain kinds of writing, entranced and rolling." Paper-clip mark to last letter, light creasing, folded for mailing and in very good condition.
