Dylan, Bob
Gerdes Folk City, 1961. Broadside, 11" x 8½", previous folds, a slight wrinkle or two, very good. Rare Gerdes Folk City advertising broadside for a series of Dylan performances in the autumn of 1961. This is the second earliest known printed advertisement for a Dylan performance. Dylan arrived in New York City from Saint Paul, via Madison and Chicago, on January 24, 1961. As soon as February he started playing informally in clubs, befriending musicians, and paying visits to his idol, Woody Guthrie, who was hospitalized with Huntington's disease at the Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital in New Jersey. "In less than three months he secured a support slot to John Lee Hooker for a two-week residency at Gerdes Folk City ... Dylan spent the week before he began support duties, from the fourth to the tenth of April, watching Hooker work his charm on a packed-out Gerdes, and honing his own set down to the five-song maximum afforded support acts" (Heylin, Behind the Shades, p. 64). For this gig with Hooker, Gerdes produced a similar, but less effusive flyer, known by at least one copy, in the Ron Cohen collection at the Woody Guthrie Center in Tulsa. Dylan had no more formal engagements until returning to Gerdes September 26, opening for the Greenbriar Boys. John Shelton, the New York Times critic, saw him at one of his first two performances, and famously reviewed the show in the September 29 issue of the Times. And Dylan, in Shelton's words "resembling a cross between a choir boy and a beatnik," never looked back. This copy comes from the estate of Dylan's friend and music critic … [Click Below for Full Description]

Shirley Clarke
London, England, UK: Contemporary Films, 1961. Contemporary Films. No binding. Just About Fine. [London]: Contemporary Films, [1961]. Set of eight (8) 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm.) double weight photos, two with stamp of Contemporary Films on verso, JUST ABOUT FINE. Director Shirley Clarke's first feature. Clarke was in so many ways an artist who disregarded and broke through all kinds of societal and artistic barriers. As a woman, she was a unique presence, especially in the 1960s when she had so few other female colleagues among American film directors. In her work, she straddled between documentary, fiction, and experimental cinema. THE CONNECTION was Clarke's first film, adapted from a play by Jack Gelber. A group of junkies await their heroin connection (played by Black actor Carl Lee, who was for a period of time Clarke's life partner), as a group of Black musicians play and rehearse. Photos from this film are extremely scarce, and these are definitely the only ones I have ever encountered.

Simon, Claude
George Braziller, New York, 1961. First edition in English of the Nobel Prize-winning author's classic work. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Claude Simon on the title page. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of shelfwear. Jacket design by Sydney Butchkes. Translated from the French by Richard Howard. During the German advance through Belgium into France in 1940, Captain de Reixach is shot dead by a sniper. Three witnesses, involved with him during his lifetime in different capacities - a distant relative, an orderly and a jockey who had an affair with his wife - remember him and help the reader piece together the realities behind the man and his death. A groundbreaking work, for which Claude Simon devised a prose technique mimicking the mind's flexible thought processes, "The Flanders Road" is not only a masterpiece of stylistic innovation, but also a haunting portrayal - based on a real-life incident - of the chaos and savagery of war. Martin Luther King
1961. Martin Luther King Jr. King discusses color discrimination, segregation, equality, police brutality, Montgomery, and his struggles in this pre-publication original typescript. Martin Luther King's interview with John Freeman was broadcast on 29 October 1961 in the BBC series 'Face to Face'. The present typescript of the interview is from the papers of the program's producer Hugh Burnett, and is edited for publication as the section on 'The Rev LUTHER KING' in the book 'Face to Face | Edited and introduced by Hugh Burnett' (London: Jonathan Cape, 1964). On two leaves stapled together. Published by Undated but prepared for publication in 1964. In this remarkable typescript, King talks about his mother's influence on King's beliefs: "I first became conscious of color discrimination at a very early age. I think the first time I was about six years old..." King states, relating how the white children next door never wanted to play. "Finally I went to my mother with this problem, and she tried to explain to me in the best way she could explain to a child of six years old [...] She tried to explain to me the meaning of the system of segregation, but the thing I will always remember is that in the midst of her explanation she always said to me, "You must never feel that you are less than anybody else. You must always feel that you are somebody, and you must always fee that you are as good as anybody else." King continues, "On the one hand my mother taught me that should feel a sense of somebodiness, on the other hand, I had to go out and face the system, which stared me in … [Click Below for Full Description]

GREENE, Graham; [GREENE, W. Herbert]
London: William Heinemann, 1961. First British edition, first printing. Inscribed by the author to his eldest brother. Publisher's original black cloth with silver titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm with a little bumping at the spine tips, the contents are clean throughout and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the lightly rubbed dustwrapper which has a few foxing spots to the rear panel. Not price-clipped (16s net to the front flap). Family association copies of Graham Greene's novels are scarce in commerce. Inscribed by the author in blue ink on the front endpaper "For Herbert / with love from / Graham". [William] Herbert Greene was the eldest of the four Greene brothers and it could be said he suffered from being an average person in a brilliant family. Throughout his life, the impoverished "black sheep" displayed a deep moral turpitude and opportunism, consorting with remittance men and confidence-tricksters. A regular source of family anxiety and dismay, in the 1930s he flitted around the fringes of the intelligence world, spying ineffectively for the Imperial Japanese Navy and for the fascists in Spain. No doubt Herbert's misadventures contributed to Graham's obsession with seedy, broken down men and dodgy dealers; first appearing, thinly disguised, as the conman Anthony Farrant in his 1935 novel "England Made Me". Despite their difficulties it is clear Graham kept in touch with Herbert (a tranche of correspondence between the two, spanning four decades, the tone generally friendly and warm, i … [Click Below for Full Description]

Moore, Robin
Coward McCann, New York. Coward McCann. New York. 1961. 320 pages. First edition; first printing. Book is about fine; with slight toning along panel edges. $4.50 price intact on DJ flap with 5 open chips. This is a signed association copy of author Robin Moore. Moore ever the flamboyant author who was the son of the man who founded the Sheraton Hotel chain, was Harvard-educated where he became close pals with Robert F. Kennedy, and then he went on to pen the best sellers the Green Berets and The French Connection among others, the former of which translated incredibly well to the silver screen. Moore's inscription on FFEP reads: For ___, As we sit (so often and in a bittersweet mood we seem to do this) at Idlewild waiting for a plane to take me away. Love, Robin. Idlewild, March 30, 1961. All things point to this being an intimate association copy as the dated inscription coincides with the publishing of this new title; and Mr. Moore's inscription reads as though the two of them are waiting together at the airport for him to leave; again. (Idlewild being the former name of NYC's JFK airport; changed in tribute to Moore's close pal's brother's assassination.) Ironically this story tells the story of a hired American mercenary tangled-up in Castro's revolution; and this inscription is dated only 17 days before Moore's Harvard pals would order the failed Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba. Almost makes you wonder where Mr. Moore was headed to with his intelligence after penning this inscription for this book chronicling the firsthand secret exploits of an American soldier of fortune … [Click Below for Full Description]

The dust jacket is soiled, rubbed, has shallow chips and a few short tears. A still presentable example which presents well behind the new archival dust jacket protector. This title was the first time Bond had uttered the trade mark catchphrase "My name's Bond, James Bond" (p. 114). This title is also the first installment in the Blofeld trilogy which is completed by On Her Majesty's Secret Service and You Only Live Twice. Adapted in 1965 into what is likely the most memorable of the Bond films to star Connery. Increasingly uncommon. All books are offered with a full 30 day postage paid return policy. All books which are in dust jackets will be mailed with a clear archival dust jacket protector fitted. Shipping costs can be combined if multiple purchases are made. Items will be packaged and shipped within one business day unless otherwise noted. Please always feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]

Fleming, Ian
Jonathan Cape, London, 1961. First edition of the ninth novel in Ian Fleming's James Bond series. Octavo, original black cloth. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of shelfwear. Jacket art by Richard Chopping. A very sharp example. "Thunderball represented a new departure [for the Bond series], with the introduction of SPECTRE and of Ernst Blofeld, a commanding villain who was to reappear. This gave a measure of continuity to the later Bond novels Thunderball worked well as an adventure story the theme of the theft of atom bombs seemed pertinent and modern" (Black, 49, 55). "A thriller, a chiller and a pleasure to read" (New York Times). It was adapted twice to the screen: under the present title in 1965 and as Never Say Never Again in 1983—each time starring Sean Connery. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

FLEMING, Ian Lancaster, (1908-1964).
London: Jonathan Cape. 1961. [Spy novel] INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR. First edition, first Issue, Binding A, octavo (20 x 14cm), pp.254. With characteristic ballpoint inscription to the flyleaf; To/ Peter Werner/ from/ the Author. The recipient Peter Werner later became a prolific American film director. This is one of a few titles from the Werner collection that were inscribed by Fleming. A lightly used copy in mildly rubbed jacket. Very good. 'Thunderball' is one of the most pivotal works of the series. It was in 'Thunderball' that Fleming first introduces the world to the ultimate Bond villian- Ernest Stavro Blofeld. Though Bond and Blofeld never actually meet here, it is in this book that Bond first battles the schemes of SPECTRE, Blofeld's criminal organisation. Is the first part of the so-called 'Blofeld' trilogy, and was followed by 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' (1963) and 'You Only Live Twice' (1964). The title was filmed in 1965, starring Sean Connery as 007, Claudine Auger as Domino and Adolfo Celi as Emilio Largo- SPECTRE's No.2. The later film 'Never Say Never Again', with Connery again as 007, was loosely based on this story. Noted in the bibliography p.300. Previously sold by this firm [inventory no.35980, August 2010]. Bukowski, Charles (et al)
Loujon Press, New Orleans, 1961. Five volumes in four, 8vos, 101, 112, 138, [198]pp; wrappers; with a second copy of the final double number in cloth. The complete run of this unique and important magazine, best known for publishing the early work of Charles Bukowski. Each issue was hand set and printed by letterpress and reflected publishers Jon and Louise "Gypsy Lou" Webb's distinctive sense of quirkiness in design, using multiple stocks and colors of paper, as well as a variety of fonts and type-sizes. In addition to Bukowski, "The Outsider" also published a who's who of Beats and key figures of early '60s literature and poetry, including: Russell Edson, Gregory Corso, Gary Snyder, Allen Ginsberg, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Robert Creeley, William S. Burroughs, Diane Di Prima, Michael McClure, Jack Kerouac, and many many others. The final issue incorporates "Homage to Kenneth Patchen" featuring tributes from numerous poets and acolytes. Laid into this number is the separate insert of pressed, dried flowers picked from "inside a mile of Geronimo's grave. . ." included as a good luck charm with this volume and with an explanatory leaf affixed with a paper clip. The cloth issue was limited to 500 copies. A truly complete set, in excellent condition, and scarce thus. Fine copies with just the slightest rubbing to extremities; delicate and scarce dust jacket on the clothbound volume with tears and chips to spine and folds
