Salamanca, J.R.
New York: Simon and Schuster, 1961. First Edition. First Edition. Robert Rossen's annotated copy of the novel, with his name in holograph ink on a label affixed to the front board. Rossen would go on to adapt to the novel to the screen and direct in 1964. The film, a psychological drama that was very much an antecedent for the New Hollywood era, starred an array of actors that would go on to great heights: Warren Beatty, Jean Seberg, Peter Fonda, and Kim Hunter.Rossen's paper clips, all along the top page edges, are still in place, and the book's profuse annotations are mainly in the form of text that is bracketed in holograph pencil at the margins, indicating Rossen's decision process for pulling the content he would need to write the screenplay.Rossen's career began as a playwright in New York, and like Odets, Rossen had a tremendous passion for literature, the theatre, and radical politics. His intuitive understanding of the working class informed his first three screenplays after moving to Hollywood, all for director Raoul Walsh: "The Roaring Twenties" (1939), "They Drive By Night" (1940), and "High Sierra" (1941).During this period he also wrote the screenplays for a number of seminal films noir, including "Out of the Fog" (1941), "Blues in the Night" (1941), "The Strange Love of Martha Ivers" (1941), and many others.Rossen's work in what became known as classic film noir culminated in three of his most powerful endeavors, which he would also direct: "Johnny O'Clock" (1947), "Desert Fury" (1947), and "Body and Soul" (1947). He ended the 1940s with "All the King's Men" … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hitler, Adolf; Taylor, Telford [Introduction]; Attanasio, Salvator [Translator]; Pollack, Jack Harrison [Magazine Article]
Grove Press, Inc, 1961. xxv, [1], 230 pages. Index. "Now published for the first time: The long-suppressed sequel to Mein Kampf. In May, 1945, an American officer in Germany confiscated the manuscript of an unpublished book ascribed to Adolf Hitler and sent it to the United States. In the summer of 1958 it was identified beyond any question as a second book by Hitler. Nowhere else did he set forth his foreign policy so frankly and fully. What emerges is an eleborate rationalization for a war policy on Germany's part, and an intensive sketch of an alliance policy in preparation for war. The book closes with an exposition of 'the Jewish question', as Hitler saw it." - dust jacket. Book clean and unmarked with average wear. Binding intact. Somewhat above-average wear to dust jacket now preserved in archival-grade Brodart. A sound copy. Laska 216, Rees G 914, Singerman 1056. London: Macmillan & Co Ltd, 1961. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. Octavo, 170 pages; VG/VG; in pictorial dust jacket, blue/green spine with black and red titling; mild rubbing and wear, particularly to head and tail of spine; dust jacket protected with a mylar covering, price uncut '13s 6d net'; Inscribed on the ffep by Muriel Spark, "For Rachel MacKenzie / with love / from Muriel" JM consignment; shelved case 3. Rachel MacKenzie was a fiction editor at The New Yorker from 1956 through 1979. Known for nurturing the careers of such literary giants as Isaac Bashevis Singer and Saul Bellow, she also had a correspondence with Muriel Spark and encouraged her to submit to the New Yorker as early as 1957. In August of 1961 Spark sent MacKenzie her sixth novel, and MacKenzie promptly telegrammed her, "I love this book." The entirety of the October issue was devoted to The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, similar to what had been done in 1946 for John Hersey's Hiroshima. Spark moved to New York at the request of the New Yorker, and her relationship with MacKenzie soon soured. It is unknown exactly why, but reasons put forward have included MacKenzie's overbearing attitude and a romantic element, but the true cause is unknown. Spark did continue publishing with the New Yorker through 2003, though under different editors. The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie was listed on the Modern Library's list of the 100 greatest novels of the 20th century, as well as having been adapted for stage, film and television. Uris, Leon
Doubleday & Company, Garden City, NY, 1961. First edition of Uris' classic novel about the Warsaw Uprising. Octavo, original cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper to Harry Saltzman, co-producer of the James Bond film series, "For Harry with affection Shalom Leon Uris." Near fine in a very good price-clipped dust jacket. Jacket drawing by Harlan Krakowitz. Jacket design by Al Nagy. Mila 18 is a novel by Leon Uris set in German-occupied Warsaw, Poland, before and during World War II. Mila 18 debuted at #7 on The New York Times Best Seller List (the second-highest debut of any Uris novel ever, bested only by the #6 debut of Trinity in 1976) and peaked at #2 in August 1961.[1] Leon Uris's work, based on real events, covers the Nazi occupation of Poland and the atrocities of systematically dehumanising and eliminating the Jewish people of Poland. The name "Mila 18" is taken from the headquarters bunker of Jewish resistance fighters underneath the building at ulica Mila 18 (18 Mila Street, in English, 18 Pleasant Street). (See Mila 18.) The term ghetto takes on a clearer meaning as the courageous Jewish leaders fight a losing battle against not only the Nazis and their henchmen, but also profiteers and collaborators among themselves. Eventually, as the ghetto is reduced to rubble, a few courageous individuals with few weapons and no outside help assume command of ghetto defense, form a makeshift army and make a stand. MAC Low Jackson, Yoko Ono, La Monte Young, Diane Wakoski, Simone Morris, Joseph Byrd, Robert Dunn, Shimon Tamari, C.V.J. Anderson, Spencer Holst, Joan and Robert Kelly, Iris Lezak, and John Perreault)
New York, 1961. Mimeographed typescript sheet. Quarto. Overall very good with old folds and some rubbing. A program featuring Jackson Mac Low's performance as part of the historic concerts and performance series organized by La Monte Young and held at Yoko Ono's Chamber Street apartment. The series featured many of the top artists of the New York avant-garde scene including John Cage, Dick Higgins, Walter DeMaria, Terry Riley, Robert Morris, Toshi Ichiyanagi, Jim Dine, and Ono. The series closely paralleled the European shows being produced by George Maciunas and his newly developing Fluxus movement, which itself was inspired by the Dadaist. The Chambers Street shows led Maciunas to invite Ono to join his fledgling group and helped coalesce the various artists that would become the core members of Fluxus. This program focused on Mac Low's two-night performance of his poetry, music, and theater works held on Saturday April 8 and Sunday April 9, 1961. The 20-part performance features works written by Mac Low between January 1955 and March 1961 and with performance contributions from Young, Ichiyanagi, Diane Wakoski, Simone Morris, Joseph Byrd, Robert Dunn, Shimon Tamari, C.V.J. Anderson, Spencer Holst, Joan and Robert Kelly, Iris Lezak, and John Perreault. A wonderful piece of ephemera from this concert series that contributed to the emergence of the Fluxus movement. London: Macmillan & Co Ltd, 1961. First Edition, First Printing. Vanessa Redgrave stared in the original 1966 London stage version, Zoe Caldwell won the Tony … [Click Below for Full Description]

The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ condition with a colour design by Tennant, reproducing the frontispiece. Some light wear to the rear wrapper with a 3cm closed tear to the lower front spine fold. The wrapper artwork remains very striking in the removable Brodart archival cover.
