Fondo de Cultura Económica, Mexico 1962 - First Printing. The correct First in Spanish, preceding both the American and British editions by a period of two years. A Near Fine copy in illustrated wrappers. Faint lean and gentle sunning to the spine, else a remarkably sharp, clean copy, inscribed by Fuentes to another bookseller after a chance meeting in a Mexico City bookshop. While the colophon states an initial printing of 15,000 copies, the book was cheaply made and now scarce, particularly so in collectable condition. An early novel of the boom in Latin American literature, the author's most important work, and the only inscribed copy of this title we have seen or handled. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

        King Rat (First Edition)

Little, Brown & Company, Boston 1962 - First Printing. Clavell's first and most collectible work. The book is very good+, with just some slight pushing at the spine ends, very light soiling to the text block edges, a tiny dampstain to the top edge of the text block, and a barely visible erased pencil inscription to the front endpaper. The price-clipped dust jacket - which is protected by a removable Brodart archival cover - is in very good condition. There is some light wear/soiling and a few tiny professionally repaired edge tears, a small professionally repaired 1/2" closed tear near the top of the front panel, and some slight wear/very light chipping at the corners and spine ends. This of course is a very delicate paper wrapper - accounting for its scarcity - and has held up rather well. Overall a very nice collectible copy of Clavell's most difficult to find work. I ship all of my books bubble-wrapped in sturdy, very well-padded boxes, so they are guaranteed to arrive in the exact same condition as when they left.         Design for the mural at the entrance to the Detroit Public Library.

Detroit, Mich. 1962 - Gouache painting. 24 x 63.5 inches. (61 x 160 cm.). On illustration board mounted on a larger board with pencil notations relative to the future mural on the margins of the mount. Undulating due to past moisture. Literature: Millard Sheets. One-Man Renaissance by Janice Lovoos and Edmund Penney, pp. 73-74. Mural reproduced on p. 73. The commission resulted from Sheets winning the 1962 New York National Academy of Design's Edward Austin Abbey Competition. Some of the text beneath the images is different than in the final mural. For example, in the painting, a text by Nietzsche is at the far right and this is replaced by a text from Whitman in the actual mural. From the estate of Millard Sheets. Authenticated by Tony Sheets, the artist's son, on the verso. Better image available. Exhibited at: A Tapestry of Life. The World of Millard Sheets. The Millard Sheets Center for the Arts at Fairplex, Pomona, California. September 2007.
