Carson, a nature writer and Editor-in-Chief for the Fish & Wildlife service, had long been concerned about the widespread use of DDT and other pesticides, but lack of interest from magazine publishers led her to put aside her idea for expose. When the book finally appeared in 1962, only a year before her death, its great strength was not in presenting new information ?- most of the data she included was already known to the scientific community ?- but in making the information accessible to non-scientists and instilling a sense of fear and urgency in the public. Not only an indictment of DDT, her book challenged the very foundations of post-war modernity and western capitalism, and forced humans to reconsider their relationship to the world around them.

First edition, first issue of the author's first book. Octavo (7 15/16 x 5 3/8 inches (202 x 137 mm.). [viii], 311, [1, blank] pp. Original bright green cloth lettered in yellow on spine. A very fine copy of this highly acclaimed novel in its original very good and unclipped dust jacket. Housed in a quarter black morocco clamshell case. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was written in 1959 and published in 1962 in the midst of the Civil Rights Movement and deep changes to the way psychology and psychiatry were being approached in America. Set in an Oregon psychiatric hospital, the narrative serves as a study of the institutional processes and the human mind as well as a critique of behaviorism and a celebration of humanistic principles. The 1960s began the controversial movement towards deinstitutionalization, an act that would have affected the characters in Kesey's novel. The novel is a direct product of Kesey's time working the graveyard shift as an orderly at a mental health facility in Menlo Park, California. Not only did he speak to the patients and witness the workings of the institution, but he voluntarily took psychoactive drugs, including Mescaline and LSD, as part of Project MKUltra. The novel was adapted into a Broadway play by Dale Wasserman in 1963. Bo Goldman adapted the novel for the 1975 film directed by Milos Forman starring Jack Nicholson, which won five Academy Awards.Time Magazine included the novel in its "100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005"

Elegy for Young Lovers [opera]. Autograph musical sketches in full score, 8 pp., signed by the composer in full and dated March 3, 1962

. Small folio, 333 x 226 mm. Unbound. One signature (4 bifolia) of 26-staff "Sünova Nr. 11" music paper; all leaves are left blank to the inside (1v., 2v., 3v., 4v., 5r., 6r., 7r., 8r.). Notated in pencil, with annotations in red ball-point pen and blue pencil to f. 4r. Titling to first page: "VIII. Toni and Elizabeth." Tempo: "Andante solenne"; metronome mark: "[quarter note]=80." Text underlay in English. Various additional annotations in Henze's hand, partly in English, partly in German. Manuscript dedication to foot of final page in green ink (ball- point): "Skizzen zum Schluss der 'Elegy' Teli [=Schachteli] zur Erinnerung an den Winter [19]60-61 in Berlin und mit unendlichem Dank. Hans Werner Henze 3 März 1962" [Sketches for the conclusion of the "Elegy" for Schachteli in memory of Winter 1960-61 in Berlin and with infinite thanks. Hans Werner Henze, March 3, 1962]. Enclosed with the autograph is a fragment (ca. 76 x 37 mm.) of similar music manuscript paper with a brief, texted musical quotation from the opera ("Gregor, it's time" - from act 2, scene XII, measure 960, slightly altered) to recto, signed Werner Schachteli, all in metallic gold ink. Small stain to final page. In very good condition overall.. The present manuscript includes sketches for the final three scenes of the opera, i.e., no. 7 ("Man and wife"), no. 8 ("Toni and Elizabeth"), and no. 9 ("Elegy for young lovers") of the third act; all sketches seem to represent the same stage of the work's genesis. The bifolia are actually folded incorrectly, most probably by Henze himself (as suggested by the placement of the inscription). In terms of musical continuity, the correct sequence of pages would be: 8v. (end of no. 7), 1r. (beginning of no. 8), 7v., 2r., 5v., 4r., 6v. (beginning of no. 9, without title), 3r. The music is continuous within each bifolium. The manuscript was previously owned by the noted set designer Werner Schachteli, to whom Henze inscribed it. Schachteli is best-known for his exquisite work for elaborate productions of ballets and operas performed at the Bayerische Staatsoper, the Staatsoper Wien, the Prinzregenten-Theatre München, and the Deutsche Oper Berlin. This opera was Henze's first collaboration with W.H. Auden (1907- 73) and Chester Kallman (1921-75). Henze composed it between 1959 and 1961. It was first performed in Schwetzingen, Germany, on May 20, 1961, in a German version by Ludwig Landgraf (pseudonym of Prince Ludwig von Hessen, 1908-68), Werner Schachteli, and the composer, under the title "Elegie für junge Liebende." The premiere of the original English version followed at Glyndebourne on July 13, 1961, albeit with scenes 7 and 8 from the third act omitted. The score was published by Schott in Mainz in the same year. Henze revised the opera in 1987. "Separating himself from the avant-garde, [Henze] devoted himself to genres many of his colleagues regarded as outmoded: opera, song, the symphony. By the early 1960s... Henze was an international figure with enthusiastic admirers in the United States... 'Elegy for Young Lovers,' to a libretto by W.H. Auden and Chester Kallman, [was] about a poet's use of his family and acquaintances in his art. The story's alpine setting offered Mr. Henze the opportunity for glistening, radiant music, scored for a chamber orchestra. The work...has been more widely seen than any of the composer's other operas." Paul Griffiths in his obituary on Henze, The New York Times, October 29, 2012, p. D8. "Auden's and Kallman's words inspired [Henze] to produce moments of hauntingly beautiful and complex music... One of the opera's most interesting features is its identification of individual characters with their own solo instrument. Almost half a century after its premiere, the music of Elegy still sounds modern." Hugh Canning, Opera, July 2010, p. 88.

BV'.

        The Historical Novel

Merlin Press, London 1962 - First edition. Inscribed. In original dust-jacket. 361, (1) p. George (György, Georg) Lukács (1885-1971) was a Marxists political thinker, aesthete, university teacher, politician, literary critic, member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Lukács was among the most important and most influential philosophers of the era, the founder of the tradition of Western Marxism. He studied in Budapest, Berlin where he made acquaintance with Georg Simmel, in Heidelberg where he became friends with Max Weber, Ernst Bloch and Stefan George. He was actively involved in the Communist movement and became People's Commissar for Education and Culture (deputy to the Commissar for Education) and the political commissar of the Hungarian Red Army during the Hungarian Soviet Republic in 1919. After the fall of the régime he was arrested in Vienna and only the intervene of Western writers saved him from extradition. Among these authors were Heinrich and Thomas Mann who later based Naphta's character in "The Magic Mountain" on Lukács. In 1923, during the exile in Vienna his first major work "Geschichte und Klassen-bewusstsein" (History of Class Consciousness) was published by Malik Verlag. Lukács lived in Berlin in the early 1930's than he moved to the Soviet Union in 1933 and stayed there until the end of Second World War when he moved back to Budapest, to establish the new Hungarian government as member of the Hungarian Communist Party. He had major role in the removal of independent and non-communist intellectuals from all positions. During the Revolution in 1956 he served as minister in the revolutionary government of Imre Nagy which opposed the Soviet Union. After the revolution he was not allowed to publish in Hungary until 1964. Lukács's major works are History and Class Consciousness which is considered as the base of Western Marxism, and The Historical Novel in which he defines the genre of historical fiction and traces its development. In fine condition. Chipped at edges. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Inscribed by the author: "For Frank Heller, H. Beam Piper". Something of a young adult cult classic, and nominated for a Hugo Award for best novel. USA, 1962. 4°. approximately 120 pages. Softcover. Unique manuscript-document - the poems in ballpen or pencil. One typed and signed two-page-letter by Snodgrass and one handwritten letter with attachement by Snodgrass. W.D. Snodgrass helps Wolff to decide which poems to translate etc. etc. The letter also warns Wolff that the german Insel Verlag will try to stop Wolff from publishing the translations in order to retain "their version by Eitzen". William De Witt Snodgrass (January 5, 1926 ?- January 13, 2009) was an American poet under the pseudonym S. S. Gardons. He won the 1960 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. William De Witt Snodgrass was born in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh and was educated at Geneva College. His studies were interrupted when, during WWII, he was drafted into the Navy. After demobilization, Snodgrass resumed his studies, but transferred from Geneva College to the University of Iowa, eventually enrolling in the Iowa Writers' Workshop, which had been established in 1937, and was attracting as teachers some of the finest poetic talents of the day, among them John Berryman, Randall Jarrell and Robert Lowell. He was known to friends throughout his life as "De", pronounced "dee". Snodgrass's first poems appeared in 1951, and throughout the 1950s he published in some of the most prestigious magazines: Botteghe Oscure, Partisan Review, The New Yorker, The Paris Review and The Hudson Review. However, in 1957, five sections from a sequence entitled 'Heart's Needle' were included in Hall, Pack and Simpson's anthology, New Poets of England and America, and these were to mark a turning-point. When Lowell had been shown early versions of these poems, in 1953, he had disliked them, but now he was full of admiration. By the time Heart's Needle was published, in 1959, Snodgrass had already won the The Hudson Review Fellowship in Poetry and an Ingram Merrill Foundation Poetry Prize. However, his first book brought him more: a citation from the Poetry Society of America, a grant from the National Institute of Arts, and, most important of all, 1960's Pulitzer Prize in Poetry. It is often said that Heart's Needle inaugurated confessional poetry. Snodgrass disliked the term. Still, it should be pointed out that the genre he was reviving here seemed revolutionary to most of his contemporaries, reared as they had been on the anti-expressionistic principles of the New Critics. Snodgrass's confessional work was to have a profound effect on many of his contemporaries, amongst them, most importantly, Robert Lowell. Snodgrass had a long and distinguished academic career, having taught at Cornell, Rochester, Wayne State, Syracuse (1968?-1977), Old Dominion, and the University of Delaware. He retired from teaching in 1994 to devote himself full-time to his writing. He lived with his fourth wife, writer Kathleen Snodgrass (née Brown). Snodgrass created a truly modern work with De/Compositions by taking 101 classic poems and reconstructing them to prove to readers exactly how important the tiniest elements in poems can be.
