        Profiles of the Future

New York: Harper & Row. (1962). First. First American edition. Stain at the base of the spine else very good in poor dustwrapper with the stain visible on rear panel, and some tape repairs. Inscribed by Arthur C. Clarke to his protege, one-time secretary, and longtime friend Ian Macauley, who was the dedicatee of his first hardcover novel (Islands in the Sky): "To Ian with my very best wishes. Arthur, New York 3 May '64." Macauley was an award-winning New York Times journalist, who also edited Clarke's book of collected essays, Greetings, Carbon-Based Bipeds! (2000). Clarke wrote the last chapter of Childhood's End while visiting Macauley in Atlanta in 1952, where he was reportedly greatly influenced by their discussions. A splendid association copy, and not a book one usually finds signed by Clarke. .

THE HAND OF THE ENEMY - Rare Fine Copy of The First Hardcover Edition/First Printing - ONLY COPY ONLINE

Manila, Philippines: Regal Books/Erewhon Bookshop Distributors, 1962 - 1st Printing. 120 pages. Published in 1962. The author's debut novel. One of the greatest novels of the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a very small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. There is no ISBN. The First Edition is now rare. Presents Kerima Polotan's first and only novel, and her greatest achievement. From a culture that is derivative at best and imitative at worst, how is Polotan's masterpiece possible? Well, it is important to keep in mind that at the time of its publication, the Philippines was one of the most prosperous nations in Asia, a vibrant (if fragile) democracy that enjoyed unprecedented economic growth, American financial largesse to its former colony and World War II ally, and a culture (however elitist) that supported Philippine writing in English. The external factors that help make a masterpiece possible cannot be overestimated precisely because the latter comes into being to challenge a modernizing nation's intrinsic soul. Once compared to Sartre (wrongly) and Heinrich Boll (rightly), Polotan is an original: Going against the Philippine Romantic grain, she wrote un-sentimentally, scathingly, and pitilessly about love, the impossible demands it makes on human beings, and its fundamental incompatibility not just with personal ambition but with the harsh realities of life. For Polotan, love is the sole reason for being. It's what we're here for. Its enemy, whose hand prevails in the end, is life itself. By all means, one should seize whatever saving grace life has to offer, be it the glory of literature, the pleasures of art, the consolation of religious faith, and most tangible of all, worldly success. Life is essentially a trade-off, and one must never ever have any illusions about the trade-offs one makes. Polotan saves her most withering words (in passages of great descriptive power) for those who think they can have it all. The bleakness of Polotan's vision is only somewhat relieved by the generosity of her soul. She cares about her characters, mourning rather than condemning their failings. Whereas almost everyone else writes in the "Creole" style (the flowery Philippine language infused with Spanish Baroque), her lean and elegant prose makes Polotan the greatest stylist in English the Philippines has ever produced. Polotan's tough-minded yet generous writing exposes the mediocrity of contemporary writing for what it is: Sterile prose, undergraduate philosophizing, Marvel Comics fantasy-narratives. "A man follows something more urgent than himself" (Kerima Polotan). Kerima Polotan died on August 19, 2011. She will not be replaced. An absolute "must-have" title for Kerima Polotan collectors. This title is a great book. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and despite its imperfection (closed and open tears on DJ; slight fading on DJ spine) is still in fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. A rare copy thus. The greatest Philippine writer of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER KERIMA POLOTAN TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Alderney: Privately Printed for the author,, 1962. Octavo. Original japon-backed red boards, titles to spine gilt, top edge gilt others untrimmed, marbled endpapers. With the unprinted acetate dust jacket. Frontis portrait of the author. An excellent copy in the battered acetate. First edition, sole printing. One of just 100 numbered copies signed by the author. This copy additionally has the author's signed presentation inscription to the verso of the title page, "Harry Griffiths [heart and arrow device] Tim White". White has also written out an unpublished 16-line poem on a rear blank, the title a reflection of Blake "Did He Who Made the Lamb Make Thee? (Yes.)", the poem itself liberal in sentiment though viscous in tone, a scarifying meditation on the craven injustice of societies based on a punitive religious code, in which, for "tiger-convict, crooked hangman, / frigging judge and fiery bish[op]", "each of you procures the other. / Tiger bite and bishop bless. / In the jungle, twin to brother, / Howl your hymns of happiness." Rare and appealing thus.

Collins, London, 1962, Hardcover, Book Condition: Very Good Condition, Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good, First Edition, Illustrated By: Jules Feiffer?Readers of all ages will find much wit and wisdom in Norton Juster's beguiling contemporary fantasy about a little boy named Milo who didn't know what to do with himself. Through the Phantom Tollbooth lies a strange land and a series of even stranger adventures in which Milo meets King Azaz the Unabridged, the unhappy ruler of Dictionopolis; the Mathemagician, the ruler of Digitopolis ; Faintly Macabre, the not-so-wicked Which; Alec Bings who sees through things; and the watchdog Tock, who ticks, among a collection of the most logically illogical characters ever met this side or that of reality. In his quest for the Princesses Rhyme and Reason Milo helps to settle the war between words and numbers, visits the Island of Conclusions (which can be reached only by jumping), and ventures into the Mountains of Ignorance whose all too familiar demons menace his every step. The Phantom Tollbooth leads to a world which is a child's by right, an adult's through long-cherished memories, and a complete delight to both. It is a remarkable story whose humour, irony, sense and nonsense (illustrated with nearly one hundred superb Jules Feiffer drawings) make it one of the most unusual and appealing books to appear for many years.? Book - in Very Good blue boards with silver lettering - just a touch bumped to the extreme top of the spine. Contents, clean, bright and tightly bound. Dust Jacket - Very Good - small tear and some wear to the top of the spine and a couple of small closed to the edges all repaired to verso so now nice and tidy, slight rubbing to the extreme corners, some browning and some marking to the white background of the back of the jacket, slight browning to the edges of the jacket.         Welensky's view seems to be that two blacks don't make a Whitehead.

[?1962] - Sheet size: 192 × 140 mm. Undated, pencil reproduction instructions recto. Pen and black ink on wove paper. Perhaps relates to the talks between "Rab" Butler, minister responsible for central African affairs, Roy Welensky and Edgar Whitehead over the future of Rhodesia. The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley's work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. Between 1958 and 1962 he drew topical cartoons for the Daily Mail under the title "Watch My Line." He also drew many portraits, in black and white line, of famous people, for various papers, including over sixty for the Sunday Telegraph, which began publication in February 1961.

[High School Yearbook]: Old Gold Book

Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas: Hot Springs High School. 1962-1964. First. First and only editions. Three volumes. Folios. Some modest wear, student inscriptions, and dampstain to two page of one volume (1963), mostly fine in custom cloth clamshell case. All three of Bill Clinton's High School yearbooks (he attended a junior high school which went through 9th grade). As one might imagine, "Billy" Clinton (as he is called) is all over the books. In his first year there are about half a dozen photos. The next year about ten and by Senior year there are nearly 20 different photographs of him, including the famous photo of him shaking hands with J.F.K. at Boys' Nation, as well as first chair saxophone in the All-State band, and in various other clubs and honor societies. Mercifully, these yearbooks have an index to students, but we have found some instances where they have failed to note his appearance in the index. Although a relatively large school -- approximately 350 students in Clinton's class, it would be difficult to assemble another set today. .

Rigt illustr. Heftet i de orig. dekorerede omslag.<br>No 1 - 11 in 5 parts. [All published]. Richly illustr. In publisher's pictorial covers. [Gyldendals abne encycklopaedi]. <br>With original ink drawing and inscribed by Jörgen Nash. The first Situationist International was a naive organisation that always regarded the revolutionaries at Drakabygget with suspicion, for those at Drakabygget were the most radical. They wanted to realise that which others had only talked about. Grounding the international situationist movement in an experimental centre was the subject of much discussion. But when the Danish writer, sculptor and farmer, Jorgen Nash made his farmhouse at Hallandsasen available to the situationists as a Bauhaus, the Parisian situationists were gripped by a certain panic. On their own initiative the French decided to break-off all connections with Drakabygget: Group Spur in Munich; Jacqueline de Jong, editor of The Situationist Times, in Holland; Ansger Elde and Hardy Strid from Sweeden; Patric O'Brien from Ireland; Gorden Fazakerley from London and Ambrosius Fjord from Norway. Pinot Gallizio from Italy was also condemned as his 'centro sperimentale' in Alba was given the brush-off. In protest Asger Jorn resigned..

        DRAKABYGGET 1 - 11 i 5 hefter. 1962 - 1984.

Rigt illustr. Heftet i de orig. dekorerede omslag. No 1 - 11 in 5 parts. [All published]. Richly illustr. In publisher's pictorial covers.. With original ink drawing and inscribed by Jørgen Nash. King Rat (Advance Uncorrected Proofs, Books Into Film)

Boston: Little, Brown and Company, (1962). Advance Uncorrected Proofs. Paperback. At Least Very Good. Comb bound blue wrappers, title stamped in black onto upper cover, proof copy (11 inches tall), pp. (iv), 272, "FIRST EDITION" stated on copyright page. Volume with fading, a few splashes and light soil to the wrapper, one tiny chip from upper wrapper at foot of spine within the comb binding and some mild toning to page edges. Basis for the successful 1965 film directed by Bryan Forbes starring George Segal, Tom Courtenay and James Fox. The "UNREVISED, UNCORRECTED, PROOFS" and as such the earliest state of Clavell's first novel printed from his original manuscript. The story (based on the author's real life experiences of spending the last 3 years of the war in the Changi Camp in Singapore, where only 10,000 of the 150,000 prisoners survived) tells how an American corporal "King" positions himself as the unofficial ruler over POWs in a rat-infested Japanese prison camp in Singapore during World War II. "The natives consider them to be a great delicacy. Rusa tikas translated means 'mouse deer.' That's it, then. We're in the rusa tikas business." from the movie script of "King Rat" (1965). Precedes the first UK edition by a year and a relative rarity thus.

        Paradise Reclaimed [Signed] [Paradisarheimt; Undirritaðu]

New York: Thomas Y. Crowell Company, 1962. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/fine. A Fine copy of the first American edition, first printing (slight pushing to the spine ends, slight loss to publisher's name on the spine, small sticker shadow to the rear free endpaper), in a Fine dust jacket (spine lightly toned), SIGNED BY HALLDOR LAXNESS on the title page; a novel centered on the Mormon missionary involvement in Iceland. During the 19th Century, Mormon missionaries came to Iceland and converted a small number of Icelanders to Mormonism. These converts then founded the first Icelandic community outside of Iceland when, in 1855, they emigrated to America and founded the community of Spanish Fork, Utah. [The Mormon missionary endeavor to Iceland did not succeed and, as of 2013's end, only 185 Mormons lived in Iceland.] Halldor Laxness won the 1955 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his vivid epic power which has renewed the great narrative art of Iceland", making him the first (and, as of the day of this listing, the only) Icelander ever to win the Prize. In our experience, signed copies of trade editions of Laxness' work (as opposed to Limited Editions which are called to be signed) are not terribly common to the market, and signed copies of this work by Halldor Laxness are quite uncommon. A Fine copy, SIGNED BY HALLDOR LAXNESS. QUITE SCARCE.
