        Dialogo entre Venus y Priapo

Buenos Aires , LA ARBOLEDA PERDIDA, 1962 - Un disegno originale dell'Autore in copertina (ogni volume reca un disegno diverso). Stampato in occasione del sessantesimo compleanno del poeta. 8vo. pp. 14. . Ottimo (Fine). . (Oh luz! El mundo canta. / Cae la luna. El viento.)» [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The Jerusalem Windows.

      - New York: George Braziller / Andre Sauret, 1962. Large 4to, 210 pp. with 104 plates, including 64 in full color and two original color lithographs done expressly for this edition. Original red cloth in unclipped dustjacket. Occasional minor offsetting of color plates as usual, dustjacket shows slightest of wear to edges with no nicks or tears, a near fine copy. A beautifully illustrated chronicle of the creation of twelve stained glass windows, designed by Chagall for the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center Synagogue in Jerusalem. With text and notes by Jean Leymarie, who writes in the introduction: ÒGreat works of art defy limitations of time and place, but sometimes strange combinations are required to produce such art. This is true of the Jerusalem Windows, They seem to belong to the distant past but were actually conceived in our own atomic age. ChagallÕs magic has made this unusual temporal paradox possible, and Zion, where stained glass was unknown, at long last has received the well-deserved mystic raiment for which it was waited since time immemorial.Ó [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The entire issue offered of The Physical Review Second Series, Vol 125 No. 3 pp. 1067-1084, February 1, 1962. Creasing to the corners, head of spine panel bumped (with clean repair to spine panel). Small ding to front wrappers affecting first few pages. Notwithstanding the wear externally, the relevant article internally is bright and clean. Wraps. This issue of The Physical Review contains the article "Symmetries of Baryons and Mesons" by Murray Gell-Mann, found on pages 1067-1084. This paper demonstrates the "introduction of SU(3) single-octet structure of the known mesons and octet-decuplet structure for the baryons [and] predicts the Omega- Hyperon" Aside from a rare privately printed institutional paper (CTSL-20 printed in 1961), the present paper is the earliest obtainable and best work directly related to Gell-Mann's Nobel Prize, awarded for Physics in 1969 "for his contributions and discoveries concerning the classification of elementary particles and their interactions". The original printed wrappers are more difficult to find than the usual bound instititional copies. See Ezhela, et al, pgs 181 and 186-7.

        The Tin Drum

London: Secker and Warburg, 1962. First British edition of the author's first novel. Octavo. Signed by Gunter Grass on the title page. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of shelfwear. A very nice example of this highspot of post-World War II literature. When Günter Grass published "The Tin Drum" in 1959 it was as if German literature had been granted a new beginning after decades of linguistic and moral destruction. Within the pages of this, his first novel, Grass recreated the lost world from which his creativity sprang, Danzig, his home town, as he remembered it from the years of his infancy before the catastrophe of war. Here he comes to grips with the enormous task of reviewing contemporary history by recalling the disavowed and the forgotten: the victims, losers and lies that people wanted to forget because they had once believed in them. At the same time the novel breaks the bounds of realism by having as its protagonist and narrator an infernal intelligence in the body of a three-year-old, a monster who overpowers the fellow human beings he approaches with the help of a toy drum. The unforgettable Oskar Matzerath is an intellectual whose critical approach is childishness, a one-man carnival, dadaism in action in everyday German provincial life just when this small world becomes involved in the insanity of the great world surrounding it. It is not too audacious to assume that "The Tin Drum" will become one of the enduring literary works of the 20th century" (The Swedish Academy).

        Le Déjeuner sur l'Herbe

Paris: Galerie Louise Leiris,, 1962. Linocut in brown, tan, black and white on Arches paper. Image size 35 x 27 cm. Uneven toning to verso otherwise in excellent condition. Presented in a handmade white goldleaf frame with UV protective glass. A proof aside from the edition of 50. Dedicated and signed lower left by Picasso "Pour mes jeunes mariés, le 3.9.66" ("For my newlyweds"). This linocut is one of a series of Picasso's radical reinterpretations of Manet's famous painting, begun in June 1954 and continued over the next decade. By this late stage, the "Conversationalist" has lost his hair, has clearly aged, and now resembles Picasso himself, in conversation with a Victorine who could be said to resemble his wife, Jacqueline.

      - L'ENGLE,MADELEINE. A WRINKLE IN TIME. (NY): Ariel Books Farrar Strauss & Cudahy (1962). 8vo (6 x 8 1/4"), 1/4 cloth, 211p., extremely faint soil on rear cover else FINE IN DUST WRAPPER. The dust wrapper (illustrated by Ellen Raskin), is in beautiful condition with the price intact (a small amount of soil on the rear panel and a touch of rubbing at base of spine but no fraying or tears). 1st edition 1st printing of this fantasy that has become a modern classic. THIS COPY IS INSCRIBED ON THE ENDPAPER BY L'ENGLE. In the stranger than fiction category, A Wrinkle In Time had a difficult time getting published. According to "A Special Message from Madeline L'Engle" on the Random House web site: "After trying forty-odd" publishers (L'Engle later said "twenty-six rejections"), L'Engle's agent returned the manuscript to her. Then at Christmas, L'Engle threw a tea party for her mother. One of the guests happened to know John Farrar of Farrar, Straus & Giroux, and insisted that L'Engle should meet with him. Although the publisher did not at the time publish a line of children's books, Farrar met L'Engle, liked the novel and ultimately published it. A Wrinkle In Time is the winner of the NEWBERY AWARD and the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award. This is an exceptionally nice copy, rare with inscription. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

With the clear plastic dust jacket. 15 tipped in colour along with black and white plates and drawings. An excellent copy. First edition, first printing, one of 2000 copies. A terrific look at Bellmer's work as a surrealist photographer. Bellmer is more widely known for his life-sized pubescent female dolls he produced in the mid-1930s. Bellmer's first book, The Doll (Die Puppe) printed anonymously in 1934 featured photographs of his first doll arranged in a series of living pictures. Bellmer's work was declared "degenerate" by the Nazi Party, forcing him to flee to France, where is work became admired and gathered attention from the likes of André Breton's inner circle.

NAKED LUNCH - TOGETHER WITH THE RARE PROSPECTUS

New York: Grove Press, 1962. First American Edition. First Printing, one of 3,500 copies. Octavo; black cloth and paper-covered boards, with titles stamped in gilt on spine; black topstain; dustjacket; 255pp, [1]. Fine in a very Near Fine dustjacket, unclipped, with a single tiny tear at base of spine. Together with a Fine example of the publisher's 16pp prospectus. In 1962, Grove Press issued a promotional booklet to accompany the November 20, 1962 American publication of 'Naked Lunch,' a scarce and desirable piece of ephemera. Publisher Barney Rosset printed the prospectus with an obscenity trial in mind, with the entire document reading like a legal argument to establish 'Naked Lunch?'s' literary merit before a courtroom. The pamphlet opens with a short essay by Terry Southern, followed by a critical piece by E.S. Seldon. The remainder of the pamphlet contains an eight page selection from the novel. A terrific piece of ephemera that is rarely offered together with the novel, and one that is essential to understanding the early publication history of 'Naked Lunch,' the establishment of the book?'s critical reception, and the novel?'s many court battles over the years. To the best of our knowledge, the two essays contained within have not been printed in any other format. A superior copy of this Beat Generation cornerstone, and basis for the bizarre 1991 David Cronenberg film starring Peter Weller, Judy Davis, and Ian Holm. Maynard & Miles A2.b.

LA MUERTE DE ARTEMIO CRUZ (THE DEATH OF ARTEMIO CRUZ) - INSCRIBED

Mexico: Fondo de Cultura Económica, 1962. First Edition. First Printing. The correct First in Spanish, preceding both the American and British editions by a period of two years. A Near Fine copy in illustrated wrappers. Faint lean and gentle sunning to the spine, else a remarkably sharp, clean copy, inscribed by Fuentes to another bookseller after a chance meeting in a Mexico City bookshop. While the colophon states an initial printing of 15,000 copies, the book was cheaply made and now scarce, particularly so in collectable condition.         The Tin Drum.

Pantheon, New York 1962 - First American edition of the author's first novel. Octavo, original red cloth. Signed by Gunter Grass on the half title page. Fine in an excellent dust jacket that shows light wear. A very nice example. "When Günter Grass published "The Tin Drum" in 1959 it was as if German literature had been granted a new beginning after decades of linguistic and moral destruction. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

3 eigenh. Briefe mit U. ("Boni").

      O. O. u. D. bzw. wohl Zürich, 25. I. 1962.. (o. D.). [...]
