        THE ZEBRA-STRIPED HEARSE

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1962., 1962. First edition. Fine bright, tight, copy in a fine, unfaded dust jacket. When Isobel Blackwell comes calling unexpectedly on Lew Archer just minutes before her husband is scheduled to meet with the detective, she expresses concern for her stepdaughter, Harriet. The young woman is about to come into a large trust fund, and she wants to marry a handsome, penniless artist named Burke Damis. Isobel has no objection to the marriage, but Harriet's father, Colonel Blackwell, is staunchly opposed. He asks Archer to investigate Damis, and Archer agrees, partly because he's attracted to Mrs. Blackwell. Murders past and present crowd the investigation as various leads take Archer to Mexico, Lake Tahoe, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Los Angeles. The Zebra-Striped Hearse is indeed colored black and white, but the intertwining relationships of the characters range across many shades of gray. An exceptional copy.

        Silent Spring

Boston, Houghton Mifflin Company; Cambridge, The Riverside Press,, 1962. Drawings by Lois and Louis Darling. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine and upper board gilt, patterned endpapers, top edge yellow. With the dust jacket. Very light wear to ends of spine and corners in the dust jacket with shallow chipping to ends of spine, moderate wear to front panel edges. A very good copy. First edition, first impression, and a signed copy of the book that ignited the environmental movement. Signed by the author on the half title page. Carson, a nature writer and Editor-in-Chief for the Fish & Wildlife service, had long been concerned about the widespread use of DDT and other pesticides, but lack of interest from magazine publishers led her to put aside her idea for expose. When the book finally appeared in 1962, only a year before her death, its great strength was not in presenting new information ?- most of the data she included was already known to the scientific community ?- but in making the information accessible to non-scientists and instilling a sense of fear and urgency in the public. Not only an indictment of DDT, her book challenged the very foundations of post-war modernity and western capitalism, and forced humans to reconsider their relationship to the world around them.

        Catch-22

London: Jonathan Cape, 1962 First English edition, first printing. Publisher's bright red cloth, lettered in gilt; in the original first issue green dust jacket designed by Germano Facetti, lettered in black, gray and white. Fine book; unclipped dust jacket, with a hint of rubbing to the spine head, else fine. A bright and attractive copy of the author's best-known novel. Considered one of the greatest novels of the 21st century, Catch-22 is a satirical text that tells the story of United States Air Force Captain John Yossarian during World War II. Heller coined the term "Catch-22," or a paradoxical situation in which a problematic situation's solution is inherently denied by the nature of the problem. In this novel, the Catch-22 is Yossarian's enrollment in the Army; in order to be discharged, a soldier must be proven insane, but, by completing the discharge application, one essentially proves his or her own sanity. Based on Heller's own experience in the Air Corps, Catch-22 combines realistic depictions of war scenes with satirical paradoxes that border on the unreal. As Orville Prescott agrees in his 1961 review for The New York Times, "Catch-22 is realistic in its powerful accounts of bombing missions with men screaming and dying and planes crashing. But most of Mr. Heller's story rises above mere realism and soars into the stratosphere of satire, grotesque exaggeration, fantasy, farce and sheer lunacy.". 1st English Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

The Old Man's Boy Grows Older

London: Hamish Hamilton. (1962). First. Stated second impression (of the English edition). Bottom corners a little bumped else near fine in a bit tired, good plus dustwrapper with a modest external tape repair, some soiling, nicks and tears. Nicely Inscribed by the author on the half-title: "For Beth who has made the old man's boy grow younger -- Love, Bob." A book which, along with the first book in the series (The Old Man and the Boy), has assumed something like cult status for its nostalgic reminiscences of a North Carolina boyhood and the influence of a gruff old grandfather. Ruark's inscriptions are very uncommon. .
