[The] Day Mars Invaded Earth (Original screenplay for the 1963 film)

Los Angeles: Twentieth Century-Fox / API, 1962. First Draft script for the 1963 film. A nuanced "invasion from Mars" film that borrows cleverly from both "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" (aliens use human beings as physical hosts) and Val Lewton (threat of a creature, but creature is only implied, not shown). An unusually heavy emphasis on dread, atmosphere, and characterization makes this one of the most overlooked "adult" science fiction films of the 1960s. Black three-ring binder, noted as "DAY MARS INVADED EARTH" on the front wrapper, with a credit for screenwriter Spalding (as "Spaulding"). Title page present, with the title "SPACERAID 63," with a credit for screenwriter Spalding, production No. 6277, dated June 22, 1962. 96 leaves, mimeograph, with blue revision pages throughout, dated 6/28/62. Pages Near Fine, with a few small creases, binder wrapper Near Fine, with a bit of wrinkling to the front title label.

Claudia Cardinale on the set of "Il Gattopardo" [The Leopard]

N.p.: N.p., 1962. Original double weight, borderless photograph of Claudia Cardinale on the set of director Luchino Visconti's 1963 film, "Il Gattopardo," taken in 1962 during shooting. With the blue rubber stamp of an Italian press agency, Publifoto, on the verso. In the photograph, Ms. Cardinale studies an Italian version of the script while having her hair done for a scene. Visconti's classic, spacious homage to the quiet death of the Sicilian aristocracy of the mid-nineteenth century, one of the great films of the Italian cinema. Perhaps the apex of Ms. Cardinale's career, and one of a handful of examples of Burt Lancaster's willingness to take on literate, complex roles. Nominated for an Academy Award. In a custom museum-quality frame, archivally mounted, with UV glass. 9.5 x 12 inches. Tiny closed tear at the top edge, else easily Near Fine.

Zeichen im Sand. Die szenischen Dichtungen der Nelly Sachs [Unterzeichnet / Signiert / Signed] [Signs in the Sand. The Scenic Poetic Impressions of Nelly Sachs; Signed]

Suhrkamp, 1962, Hardcover, Book Condition: Fine, Dust Jacket Condition: fine, First edition. A Fine copy of the first edition, first printing, in a Fine dust jacket (light discoloration to the spine panel head, minor edge wear -- Publisher's embossment to the front panel's lower right corner), SIGNED BY NELLY SACHS on the title page; comprised of a Long Poem With Dialogues and a prose appendix, all by Nelly Sachs. Born in Berlin (1891), Nelly Sachs became an unofficial spokeswoman expressing the plight and grief of the Jews. Increasingly frightened by the Nazi's rise, she and her elderly mother fled Germany in 1940, one day before Nelly Sachs was scheduled to report to a concentration camp. Her flight was made possible by her friend and frequent correspondent Selma Lagerlof (herself the winner of the 1909 Nobel Prize in Literature) who persuaded the Swedish Royal family to intervene and arrange her release from Germany. Nelly Sachs won the 1966 Nobel Prize in Literature "for her outstanding lyrical and dramatic writing, which interprets Israel's destiny with touching strength" (sharing the prize with Shmuel Yosef Agnon). In presenting the Prize to Nelly Sachs, Anders Österling, Member of the Swedish Academy, stated "Nelly Sachs's writing is today the most intense artistic expression of the reaction of the Jewish spirit to suffering, and thus it can indeed be said to fulfill the humane purpose underlying Alfred Nobel's will." Of the work herein described, Österling stated: "Identifying herself totally with the faith and ritual mysticism of her people, Miss Sachs has created a world of imagery which does not shun the terrible truth of the extermination camps and the corpse factories, but which, at the same time, rises above all hatred of the persecutors, merely revealing a genuine sorrow at man's debasement. Her purely lyrical production is now collected under the title Fahrtins Staublose, 1961 (Journey to the Beyond), which comprises six interconnected works written during a twenty-year creative period of increasing concentration. There is also a series of dramatic poems, equally remarkable in their way, under the joint title Zeichen im Sand, 1961 (Signs in the Sand), the themes of which might have been taken from the dark treasure house of Hassidic mysticism, but which, here, have taken on new vigour and vital meaning." Signed copies of Nelly Sachs's works are not common to the market and copies of the book herein described are difficult to find. A Fine copy, SIGNED BY NELLY SACHS. QUITE SCARCE INDEED.

"Woodcock Shooting". The original corrected typescript for this article (11 pp.), carbon of retyped fair copy (13 pp.), and covering correspondence

South Orange, NJ, n.d.. 1 vols. 11 x 8-1/2 inches. Fine condition. 1 vols. 11 x 8-1/2 inches. Connett's Corrected Typescript of "Woodcock Shooting". An informative, anecdotal article on the nuances of woodcock shooting, drawn from Connett's extensive experience, with numerous corrections and deletions by the author. Included is a note from Connett, presumably to an agent, conveying his original typescript for retyping: "Here's an old one I dug up. Might try Sports Illustrated or Field & Stream with it when you have given it the business". Upon receipt of the fair copy, Connett himself sent out the article to Field & Stream (his carbon, dated April 5, 1962, is included) offering the article, suggesting that it might be illustrated by the late Dr. Edward Burke and the English artist Roland Greene, and announcing that "This coming fall I am publishing a fine collection of grouse shooting stories by Burton Spiller, originally appearing in Field & Stream." From the Estate of Eugene V. Connett III, and evidently unpublished.

        The Spy Who Loved Me

London: Jonathan Cape, 1962. First edition. Octavo, original black cloth. Signed by "Best Wishes Roger Moore" on the title page. Small erasure mark to the front free endpaper, near fine in a near fine dust jacket with light wear to the spine crown. A very bright example of the tenth novel in the James Bond series. In light of the novel's immense presence as a classic thriller, it's amusing to learn that it was at first poorly received. The novel was banned in several countries due to its heightened sexual writing. The reception was so bad that Fleming wrote to Michael Howard of the Jonathan Cape publishing company to explain why he wrote the book: "I had become increasingly surprised to find my thrillers, which were designed for an adult audience, being read in schools, and that young people were making a hero out of James Bond ... So it crossed my mind to write a cautionary tale about Bond, to put the record straight in the minds particularly of younger readers ... the experiment has obviously gone very much awry" (Chancellor 2005). Upon Fleming's request, no reprints were made until after his death in 1964.

Le Fantome de L'Opera [The Phantom of the Opera] (Original French Film Poster)

Gentilly, FR: Ateliers Lalande, 1962. Original French poster for the 1962 British film. The early 1960s take on Gaston Laroux's novel, done in Hammer horror fashion. A very accessible version and probably the least ponderous, little seen today but considered second only to the 1925 Lon Chaney version by cinephiles. The film was originally written for Cary Grant, who had a strange urge to do a horror film at the time, but eventually went to the great Herbert Lom.         Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (Collection of 14 stills from the 1962 Broadway play)

New York: Billy Rose Theatre, 1962. Collection of 14 vintage black-and-white single weight still photographs from the original Broadway production of the 1962 play at the Billy Rose Theatre. "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" debuted on Oct. 13, 1962 and ran until May 16, 1964, for a total of 664 performances. The play swept the Tony awards that year, winning Best Play, Best Director, Best Producer, and Best Actor and Actress for Arthur Hill and Uta Hagen. Due to the play's over three hour run time, a second company, featuring Kate Reid, Shepherd Strudwick, Avril Petrides, and Bill Berger, was hired to perform the matinee shows beginning Oct. 27th, 1962, a first for a Broadway production. Photos from both casts are included in this collection, along with one of Uta Hagen with Rochelle Oliver, who took over the role of Honey in May of 1963. 8 x 10 inches (20 x 25 cm). Near Fine, most with stamps from the theater, press representative Howard Atlee, or photographer Alix Jeffry, with holograph notations identifying the actors to the verso. Also included is a single sheet of paper with cast and credits for the play, 8.5 x 11 inches, Very Good plus. Complete collation details available on request.
