Ich hatte schon so eine Ahnung, daß es passieren würde, in meinen letzten Briefen. Möglich, daß Du auch noch mit ihm schlafen wirst. Wenn Du es mußt, gut, - der Zauber ist vorbei u. er kann doch wohl kaum in eine ‚follie' hineinjagen, - eher in eine trostlose Enttäuschung.       London: Faber and Faber, 1962. First edition of the author's first book. Octavo, original green cloth. Light shelfwear to the bottom cloth, near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Signed by the author on the title page with the added words, "And when that happened the right words would be found." The inscription is the final line of this novel. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A superior example with a nice inscription from the author. "Cover Her Face was, James has said, written simply to try out her powers in fiction as a preliminary to attempting the novel proper. Its immediate success, however-snapped up at once by the prestigious British publishers Faber and Faber, and well reviewed on publication-caused her to try her hand again at the detective story, putting even more of the novel?'s concern with the workings of the human mind, and indeed of the soul, into its pages. Already present in that first attempt were many of the hallmarks of her subsequent writing.         The Tin Drum.

      New York: Pantheon, 1962. First American edition of the author's first novel. Octavo, original red cloth. Signed by Gunter Grass on the half title page. Fine in an excellent dust jacket that shows light wear. A very nice example. When Günter Grass published "The Tin Drum" in 1959 it was as if German literature had been granted a new beginning after decades of linguistic and moral destruction. Within the pages of this, his first novel, Grass recreated the lost world from which his creativity sprang, Danzig, his home town, as he remembered it from the years of his infancy before the catastrophe of war. Here he comes to grips with the enormous task of reviewing contemporary history by recalling the disavowed and the forgotten: the victims, losers and lies that people wanted to forget because they had once believed in them. At the same time the novel breaks the bounds of realism by having as its protagonist and narrator an infernal intelligence in the body of a three-year-old, a monster who overpowers the fellow human beings he approaches with the help of a toy drum. The unforgettable Oskar Matzerath is an intellectual whose critical approach is childishness, a one-man carnival, dadaism in action in everyday German provincial life just when this small world becomes involved in the insanity of the great world surrounding it. It is not too audacious to assume that "The Tin Drum" will become one of the enduring literary works of the 20th century" (The Swedish Academy).

      (New York: Banfer Gallery. 1962-1965). Three volumes. Oblong quartos. Full calf gilt with blank ruled leaves. Modest rubbing at the extremities, a few loose leaves, else near fine. Guestbooks from the Banfer Gallery located at 23 E. 67th St. in Manhattan, a prominent gallery for many rising young artists of the time. The three volumes cover three seasons: 1962-63, 1963-64, and 1964-65. Their openings were well attended as evidenced by these guestbooks. Each section is designated according to the artist who was being exhibited. The early Sixties were a particularly fecund time in New York for all of the arts, and that cross-pollination is very evident here.Among the thousand or more signatures (most not noted here) are hundreds of easily identified artists, curators, journalists, diplomats, and socialites.       Galerie Der Spiegel, Köln 1962 - [77] Bl. : 76 Ill. ; 46 cm, eins von 150 vom Autor einfach signierten Exemplaren mit der Nummer 108. Mit einem Vorwort von Albrecht Fabri. Umschlag von Joseph Faßbender. Die Drucke einfarbig schwarz auf dünnem, matt gestrichenem Kupferdruckbütten. Offsetgravüren = mit Diamant, Stahlwolle, Stahlbürsten, Salzsäure etc. auf Offsetplatten hergestellte und auf der Offsetmaschine gedruckte Radierungen. Die Offsettechnik in den 60er Jahren einzusetzen, kam gegenüber dem Publikum einer "Kriegserklärung" gleich, wurde diese Technik doch vor allem für Reproduktionen genutzt. Die Erschütterung war damals greifbar und an verschiedenen Stellen deutlich zu hören. Dennoch setzte sich Antes damit durch und begründete darauf sein Werk. Wer den frühen Antes sucht, ist hiermit bestens bedient. Die Serie "Parken verboten" beschließt zugleich die offene, präfigurative Phase der frühen Graphik von Horst Antes, der sich nun der Einzelfigur zuwandte. Vgl. Lutze Nr. 72-146, vgl. Roh.

Mai 1962). – „Auf Ihre Anfrage teile ich Ihnen mit, daß Polzenhagen nie mein Schüler gewesen ist. Ich lernte ihn erst kennen, als seine Kunstschulzeit schon hinter ihm lag. Durch den Verkehr mit ihm hat er gewisse Einflüsse empfangen. Meine Frau war mit ihm lange befreundet, sie weiß um P. Bescheid [.]" (Karte v. 10. Oktober 1962). – „Ich empfing Ihren Brief u. auch einen meiner Frau. Sie kann Ihnen nicht selber schreiben, weil sie krank ist. Sie teilte mit, daß sie mit P[olzenhagen] an den Abend-Akt-Kursen teilnahm, an der Akademie Hardenbergstraße in Charlottenburg, die Peter Fischer leitete. Dort hat sie ihn wohl auch kennengelernt. Fischer hat sich auch später für Polzenhagen interessiert [.]" (Karte v. 8. November 1962). – Ludwig Meidner studierte in Breslau und Paris, wo er u. a. Amedeo Modigliani begegnete, und lebte seit 1908 zumeist in Berlin, wo ihm als Mitglied der Malergruppe „Die Pathetiker" 1912 der künstlerische Durchbruch gelang. „Seine Selbstbildnisse und Portraits von Zeitgenossen (u. a. für Kurt Pinthus’ Anthologie ‚Die Menschheitsdämmerung’) sowie seine visionären Landschafts- und Städtebilder (‚Apokalyptische Landschaften’, 1912–16) weisen ihn als bedeutenden expressionistischen Zeichner und Maler aus. In seinen Dichtungen wird die Sprache hymnisch gesteigert [.] Mit der Hinwendung zu biblischen Themen setzte um 1922 eine neue Phase im künstlerischen Schaffen Meidners ein. Als Jude und ‚entarteter Künstler’ im ‚Dritten Reich’ verfolgt, unterrichtete er seit 1935 an einer jüdischen Schule in Köln und emigrierte 1939 nach Großbritannien" (DBE). 1962 kehrte Meidner nach Deutschland zurück, seine Gattin Else hingegen blieb bis zu ihrem Tod in London, wo sie an die 140 Gemälde und über tausend Zeichnungen schuf, die zeitlebens aber ohne Anerkennung blieben. – Ralf Busch veröffentlichte i. J. 2000 eine Monographie über den Maler Walter Polzenhagen (Unterlüß, Albert-König-Museum). – Beiliegend zwei Kuverts d. Adressaten.

      London: Jonathan Cape 1962 - First edition, first printing of the tenth novel in the James Bond series. Publisher's dark gray cloth, spine lettered in silver, dagger illustration stamped to the front board in blind and silver; in the original pictorial dust jacket designed by Richard Chopping, with an illustration to the front panel of a charred paper being pinned to a desk with a dagger and with a carnation resting on top, lettered in black. A fine copy; unclipped dust jacket, with a hint of wear to the spine head, faint soiling to the folds, else bright and clean. A beautiful copy. Gilbert A10a (1.1). The Spy Who Loved Me is a unique Bond novel, written from the point of view of the main character, Vivienne Michel. Michel narrates the text, beginning with her troubled childhood, and, interestingly, Bond does not appear until well into the second half of the novel. The Spy Who Loved Me was an experiment for Fleming, who was "interested in this view of James Bond, through the wrong end of a telescope, so to speak." The novel was commercially unsuccessful, and, in response, Fleming asked Jonathan Cape to suppress any paperback editions, a request which the publisher honored during the author's lifetime. The subsequent 007 novel, On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1963), returned to the classic Bond story format, as it was set in the Picardy resort where readers had first encountered 007 in Casino Royale. The 1977 film adaptation of The Spy Who Loved Me bears almost no resemblance to this text other than the title. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Original black cloth with blind-stamped dagger, the blade in silver to upper board, titles in silver to the spine, in dustwrapper. A very good copy, the binding clean, with a small spine lean and some spotting to the top edge of the text block. The contents are entirely complete, with the ownership signature of Academy Award winning actor Anthony Hopkins in pencil to the red front free endpaper. There is the occasional light mark to the margin throughout. Complete with the rubbed, nicked and darkened original dustwrapper which has several short closed tears to the extremities. It has not been price-clipped (the correct price of 15s net present to the front flap) and the blank rear flap has pencil notations (an appointment) in Anthony Hopkins' hand. Housed in a blue cloth collectors case. (29,738 copies printed. [Gilbert A10a (1.1).]) A very interesting provenance. Anthony Hopkins was in his own words ?"briefly in the running to play James Bond?" following his turn as a British agent in the spy film When Eight Bells Toll. Of the 1971 meeting with producers Hopkins states ?"I met Cubby Broccoli and I didn't think I was the right material for Bond but it was flattering to be offered it?".       Art in America 1962 - Very good. few minor markings to title plate on front cover, light wear to exterior and edges, book bowed slightly due to its enormous size, o/w a quite nice copy signed by Wyeth on the title page and hand-numbered 244 out of 500 12 p. cloth over boards folding cover containing 12 beautiful color plates inside the title page folder w/ Wyeth's signature, lacking the original box, but not the standard ex-library copy of this scarce book. In 1962 the editors of Art in America proposed to Wyeth a portfolio of reproductions of his recent dry-bush drawings. The artist and his wife suggested the theme, "The Four Seasons, " because of the essential role played in his work by the cycle of the seasons. The drawings were selected by Andrew and Betsy Wyeth from works in the house and studio at Chadds Ford, supplemented by some owned by friends. Young, 2-28-66, from the author, and kissed by the author on the front cover.?" And indeed: SIGNED by Heliczer at his printed name to rear cover (Young was mistaken about this) and KISSED three times by him with red lipstick impressions to same. Young was a central figure throughout the 1960s NYC music and literary scenes. He founded the Folklore Center, produced Dylan's first concert in 1961 (Dylan even wrote a song for/about him, "Talking Folklore Center"), and was close to Sanders, helping to print several titles from from his Fuck You Press on the mimeo machine at the Center. Heliczer was one of the geniuses of the Mimeo Revolution, whose Dead Language Press produced some of the most beautiful objects of the movement. Young was a central figure throughout the 1960s NYC music and literary scenes. He founded the Folklore Center, produced Dylan?'s first concert in 1961 (Dylan even wrote a song for/about him, ?"Talking Folklore Center?"), and helped Ed Sanders to print several items from from his Fuck You Press on the mimeo machine at the Center. A decidedly uncommon book with a unique and unusual association.

Hardcover. Very Good in a Good dust jacket. Light evidence of dampstaining along the edges of the cloth; spotting to endpapers; corners bumped; a few small spots to the boards. Unmarked, clean text, although there is a hint of waving throughout. Slim areas along the top and bottom edge of the jacket have been filled-in with green marker to match the original hue; spine lightly sunned; minor edgewear. The blank side of the jacket is abraded at the inner flaps where it appears that they were once glued to the pastedowns; the pastedowns with matching vertical abrasions. C classic of '60s literature, published years before Flower Power and the Hippies took over. Signed by Kesey. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with light wear. A very nice example of this highspot of post-World War II literature. "When Günter Grass published "The Tin Drum" in 1959 it was as if German literature had been granted a new beginning after decades of linguistic and moral destruction. Within the pages of this, his first novel, Grass recreated the lost world from which his creativity sprang, Danzig, his home town, as he remembered it from the years of his infancy before the catastrophe of war. Here he comes to grips with the enormous task of reviewing contemporary history by recalling the disavowed and the forgotten: the victims, losers and lies that people wanted to forget because they had once believed in them. At the same time the novel breaks the bounds of realism by having as its protagonist and narrator an infernal intelligence in the body of a three-year-old, a monster who overpowers the fellow human beings he approaches with the help of a toy drum.
