        Reinhart in Love

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons. (1962). First. First edition. Stains along the edges of the boards, thus a sound but good only copy in a good but presentable dustwrapper with a corresponding stain visible only on the rear panel. The Dedication Copy Inscribed by the author to his parents: "Love, Tom II. This book has already been dedicated to you by Thomas Berger." The printed dedication reads: "To my father and mother." Berger was a fine, if now ridiculously underappreciated author. He wrote successfully in several genres, but is best known for his picaresque western Little Big Man, the basis for the film of the same name. Indeed it was his success at so many genres (literary fiction, mysteries, epics, westerns, comedies, etc.) that might have contributed to the failure of critics to properly value him. This is the author's second book, and the second in his series featuring Carlo Reinhart, with a wonderful association. .

        Typed Letter Signed

Remsenburg, New York: np. First Edition. letter. IMPORTANT SIGNED LETTER ON THE ORIGIN OF THE NAMES WOOSTER AND JEEVES. Wodehouse's letter, dated May 20, 1962, is in response to a letter from G.L.C. "Bertie" Wooster, asking Wodehouse if he had known his father at Clifton College and perhaps gotten the name "Wooster" from him. Wodehouse writes in full: Dear Mr Wooster. I was very interested to get a letter signed by your honoured name! But I wasn't at Clifton. I was at Dulwich. I can't remember how I got the name Wooster.  I think it may have been from a serial in the old Captain, where one of the characters was called Worcester.  The odd thing is that the Bertie W. character started out as Reggie Pepper, and I don't know why I changed the name. Jeeves I got from watching a Warwickshire v Gloucestershire match. One of the Warwickshire bowlers was called Jeeves, and it seemed just the name I wanted. I have just shipped off a new Jeeves novel to the Jenkins people. It is a sequel to The Code of the Woosters, and has come out very well. It won't be published till next year, as I have a Blandings Castle story coming out in June and they never like to publish more than one a year. Yours sincerely, [signed] P.G. Wodehouse The sequel Wodehouse refers to is almost certainly Stiff Upper Lip, Jeeves, published in 1963. With original typed envelope and a note from G. L. C. Wooster (signed "Bertie") explaining the context of the letter to Wodehouse. Also with a photograph (5x7 in) of Wodehouse. Remsenburg, New York: May 20, 1962. One page (6x7 inches), on Wodehouse's Remsenburg, New York letterhead. Horizontal fold, some light browning and foxing. A fascinating insight into the origins of the names of two of the most iconic characters in English literature.

A Kind of Loving (Original screenplay for the 1960 film)

London: Vic Films / Governor Films, 1962. Final British Script for the 1962 film, based on the 1960 novel. Along with "Billy Liar" (1963), which he would make the following year, John Schlesinger's first feature film is perhaps the quintessential document of middle-class life in Northern England during the early 1960s. Bates plays a young and somewhat ambitious factory worker who becomes carelessly involved with a young woman and gets her pregnant, resulting in suffocating consequences for both parties. Chartreuse, die-cut titled wrappers. Title page present, with credits for novelist Barstow and screenwriters Waterhouse and Hal. 161 leaves, mechanically reproduced, rectos only.       London: Hodder & Stoughton,, 1962. Octavo. Original orange boards, spine lettered in gilt. With the dust jacket. Small spot to top edge, head of spine very lightly bumped, margins of free endpapers tanned. An exceptionally bright copy in the dust jacket with very gentle toning along the spine. First edition, first impression of Deighton's first book, one of 4,000 copies printed. Raymond Hawkey's striking dust jacket, much admired by Deighton himself, "went against the prejudice of the book trade at the time in that it was monochromatic, used discreet typography and a photographic rather than a drawn illustration". Jackets carrying no reviews such as the present example are often referred to as being in the first state, though Milward-Oliver makes no mention of this.

        KING RAT

Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1962. First Edition, preceding the UK issue by one year. 8vo, publisher's original cream boards lettered on the spine in dark green, in the original dustjacket. 406 pp. A very nice copy of this scarce debut novel, with only a bit of mellowing to the boards as can be expected due to their colour, a bit of spotting to the fore-edge and top edge, the jacket in a very pleasing state of preservation, bright and clean with only very minimal evidence of shelving. THE AUTHOR'S DEBUT NOVEL, HIS MOST COLLECTABLE AND ALSO CONSIDERED BY MANY HIS BEST. KING RAT is his semi-fictional account based on his own experiences in a Japanese prison camp near Singapore during the final days of the war. The initial printing was only 7500 copies, but it soon would be an international bestseller and would in less then three years be turned into a motion picture by Bryan Forbes and starring George Segal. KING RAT is also the first in what would become the author's epic decades-spanning "Asian Saga" that would include TAI-PAN, SHOGUN, NOBLE HOUSE and GAI-JIN.

Signed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama on the title page with the added words "with prayers." Near fine in a excellent dust jacket that is lightly rubbed. In 1959, following the Chinese suppression of the Tibetan national uprising, he was forced to seek asylum in India. As Tibet's leader-in-exile, he has worked tirelessly not only on behalf of the Tibetan people but as a voice for human rights worldwide.
