Vivre sa vie (Candid still photograph of Anna Karina on the set)

Les Fils de la Pléiade, Paris 1962 - Vintage oversize black-and-white borderless still press photograph, shot on location during the filming of the 1962 French film, featuring Anna Karina and two unknown extras in a brothel scene.Based on the novel "Où en est la prostitution" by Marcel Sacotte, who also contributed to the screenplay. Godard's least "intellectual" film is also one of his finest, a touching drama about a college-educated woman who drifts into prostitution out of boredom with the working world. The Criterion Collection: "Vivre sa vie" was a turning point for Godard and remains one of his most dynamic films, combining brilliant visual design with a tragic character study. The lovely Anna Karina, Godard's greatest muse, plays Nana, a young Parisian who aspires to be an actress but instead ends up a prostitute, her downward spiral depicted in a series of discrete tableaux of daydreams and dances. Featuring some of Karina and Godard's most iconic moment, from Karina's movie theater vigil with "The Passion of Joan of Arc" to her seductive pool-hall strut. A landmark of the French New Wave that still surprises at every turn. Set and shot in Paris. In a custom museum-quality frame, archivally mounted, with UV glass. 9.25 x 12 inches. Near Fine. Criterion Collection 512.

Beatles SIGNED by fab four with Roy Young and Bernard Boyle

1962 - Beatles Rare Early Signatures with Roy Young and Bernard Boyle in Matted Display (Hamburg, 1962). Also signed by the founder of the first-ever Beatles Fan Club (and a sometime Beatles roadie) Bernard Boyle. A 5.75" x 4" deckle-edged B&W glossy photo of the group with instruments in their black leather outfits. On the back is printed "With Best Wishes from Paul Pete John George. The Beatles. April 5th 1962". Around the text are clear blue ballpoint signatures: "für Christa von George Harrison", "für Christa von Paul McCartney", "Roy Young" (signed twice), "für Christa von John Lennon", "Best Wishes from Pete Best", and "Best Wishes from Bernard Boyle". These photos were given out at a Cavern Club concert honoring the Official Fan Club on the above date. Double matted with an 8.75" x 6" B&W photo of the Beatles on stage with Roy Young at the Star Club to an overall 11.75" x 15.75". These autographs are of German origin. Minor wear and some light fingerprints at the bottom edge, overall Fine. From the Uwe Blaschke Beatles Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions. Roy Young was a British Rock singer and pianist who had some success in the late fifties on various Pop music TV shows and touring with Cliff Richard and the Shadows. His records on Fontana and Ember during this period had only modest sales. In 1961, he decided to move to Hamburg with its burgeoning music scene and took up residence in the Top Ten Club, performing with Tony Sheridan, Ringo Starr, and others. When the Star-Club opened in April 1962, he moved to the new venue where he regularly played piano and sang background vocals for the Beatles. According to various interviews, Young claims that he had an offer to become a member of the group: "I remember coming off stage one night and Brian Epstein, the Beatles' manager, was standing at the side of the stage," he recalls. "Brian said, 'may I have a word? The lads asked me to ask if you would be interested in going back to England and join them to get a record contract'. "I told him it was an incredible offer but I would have to think about it. If I had been smart enough there is no doubt what I would have done." Instead, Roy says, he took the decision to stay in Hamburg. "I went back to Brian and said 'I'm going to decline your offer because I'm under contract with the Star-Club'. I could have got out of it. But I'd walked out of the Top Ten Club (another Hamburg club in the Beatles story) and I thought 'I just can't do it again'." (The Oxford Times UK interview, April 12, 2012). According to the Mersey Beat (Issue 5, August 31, 1961) it was Bernard Boyle who formed the first-ever Fan Club for the Beatles. He was a huge admirer of the group from the early days, even to the point of losing his job for spending too much time at lunchtime sessions at the Cavern. "I talked to Bob Wooler and kept saying to him, 'This group's the f**king greatest ever!'-so he introduced me to them. I was over the moon. I looked up to all of them: I was young, naive, wide-eyed, and I thought these guys were the greatest in the world. My one-hour lunch breaks from the office got longer and longer until eventually I went back to find I'd been fired. So I started doing occasional jobs for the Beatles, to help Neil. I'd carry the gear and go to gigs with them in the van. I was just a kid but I wormed my way in and they didn't mind." (Tune In: The Beatles: All These Years by Mark Lewisohn, page 464). Overall, a fabulous early photograph with early authentic signatures by the Beatles. Offers and trades considered. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Dialogo entre Venus y Priapo

La Arboleda Perdida, 1962. Brossura (wrappers) Un disegno originale dell'Autore in copertina (ogni volume reca un disegno diverso). Stampato in occasione del sessantesimo compleanno del poeta. 8vo. pp. 14. Ottimo (Fine). (Oh luz!. El mundo canta. / Cae la luna.. El viento..)»

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1962. Octavo. Original dark grey boards, titles to spine in silver, dagger design to front board in silver and blind, red endpapers. With the dust jacket. A little spotting to edge of text block, faint tape marks to endpapers. A very good copy in the bright jacket with tape marks to verso. First edition, first impression. In many ways this is one of the most ambitious of Fleming's Bond books. It purports to be the first hand testimony of a 23 year old Canadian woman with whom Bond has an ill-fated affair. In time-honoured literary tradition Fleming claims to have been sent Michel's manuscript account of which he is merely the editor. Michel therefore gets a spurious credit as co-author on the title page. This novel is the only Bond book to be written in the first person.

Luis Bunuel (FIrst Edition, signed by Bunuel)

CInema d'Aujourd'hui no. 4 / Editions Seghers, Paris 1962 - First Edition, a trade softcover original. SIGNED by director Luis Bunuel on the half title page. An early critical study of the pioneering and influential Spanish director, who made films in nearly every genre over his 50 year career, including experimental films, musicals, comedies, crime, documentary, and even Westerns, six of which were included in "Sight and Sounds" recent 2012 list of the 250 best films, tied with Howard Hawks, Jean-Luc Godard, and Powell / Pressburger, and second only to Robert Bresson. Despite his broad range of subject matter, Bunuel's poetic visual style made his films uniquely his own, with Ingmar Bergman stating "Bunuel nearly always made Bunuel films." A scarce signature, and the first we have seen in a book related to the director's own work. From the collection of noted cinephile and collector Pierre Goulliard, who spent decades in the latter half of the twentieth century obtaining inscriptions from the giants of European cinema.Very Good plus in wrappers. Lightly soiled, with a reader's crease and some light rubbing to the edges, but square and tight overall. Text in French, illustrated with numerous photos throughout.         Frederick Sommer: 1939-1962 Photographs

N.p.: Aperture, Inc., 1962. Very light foxing to the thin top edge of the text block, slight pulling at the head of the spine (a problem endemic to this title); near fine in white boards.. First Edition. Small square quarto. Frederick Sommer's first book, entirely designed by him. The scarce cloth edition of the first hardcover book ever published by Aperture, more commonly encountered in wrappers as issue 10:4 of Aperture Magazine. By some reputable accounts as few as 50 copies of the cloth edition were printed, although I think the number is closer to 200. (Roth 162-163).
