Epizod iz sovremennoi bor'by idei [i.e. An Episode from the Contemporary Fight of Ideas] // Novy Mir. №9. 1964. Pp. 231-239. 25x16 cm. In owner's contemporary cloth binding. Slightly rubbed, damp stain on the top side of the last page, a few owner's markings (number and year of issue). Otherwise a clean very good or better copy. Extremely rare. This is a remarkable collection of five first Solzhenitsyn's publications including his first ever publication of the famous One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. Writer's publications accompanied by two reviews in the end of the convolute. The short period when Solzhenitsyn was allowed to print his works in Russia came after chief editor of Novy Mir Alexander Tvardovsky (1910-1971) showed a novel by him to Khruchev and suprisingly it met his approval. Everything that was printed in Novy Mir by Solzhenitsyn is bound in this book. By March of 1963 Alexander Solzhenitsyn lost Khrushchev's favor and after Brezhnev came to power he completely lost an ability to publish his works legally. Soviet press started anti-Solzhenitsyn campaign after In the First Circle and Cancer Ward were published in the West in 1968. KGB created a special unit working against the writer. In 1974 authorities ordered to remove all issues of Novy Mir with Solzhenitsyn's publications: №11 from 1963 (One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich), №1 from 1963 (Matryona's Place), №7 from 1963 (For the Good of the Cause), №1 from 1966 (Zakhar-Kalita). Magazines were destroyed by cutting into little pieces which was confirmed by a special report signed by librarians who were actually destroying them. WorldCat locates Novy Mir. №7 from 1963 (For the Good of the Cause) in one library (California State Library) and Novy Mir. №11 from 1962 (One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich) in five Northern American libraries. Other issues were not found.

Il Gattopardo [The Leopard] (Two original photographs from the set of the 1963 film)

Rome, Italy: Titanus, 1962. Two vintage single weight, borderless photographs of Claudia Cardinale and Alain Delon on the set of director Luchino Visconti's 1963 film, "Il Gattopardo" (noted as "The Ghepard" on the verso). Shot in 1962 during production. The first photograph pictures Cardinale and Delon in a heated moment, while the second shows the same shot, but with Visconti making adjustments to Cardinale's hair while the actors fall charmingly out of character. First photograph with the rubber stamp of Italian photographer G.B. Poletto on the the verso, along with some press notations. Second photograph with the blue rubber stamp of an Italian press agency, Keystone, and a mimeo in ditto style, on the verso. Visconti's classic, spacious homage to the quiet death of the Sicilian aristocracy of the mid-nineteenth century, one of the great films of the Italian cinema. Perhaps the apex of Ms. Cardinale's career, and one of a handful of examples of Burt Lancaster's willingness to take on literate, complex roles. Nominated for an Academy Award. Both photographs 9.5 x 7.25 inches. Near Fine.

        Big Sur

New York: Farrar, Straus & Cudahy, 1962. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of wear. "Big Sur has a swing and a concern with living, a feeling for nature, a self-doubting humour and an awareness of posture which puts it squarely in the powerful tradition of American folk writing. Stunning and vivid" (Sunday Times). "In Big Sur, the mirror of the Beat way of life is hammered at and it shatters. The Kerouac hero "cracks up" while doing the things he has always liked best to do" (New York Times).

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1962. Book. Fine. Hardcover. First Edition. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1962. First American Edition. With this startling, exhilarating book of poems, Sylvia Plath (1932-63) burst into literature with spectacular force. In such classics as "The Beekeeper's Daughter," "The Disquieting Muses," "I Want, I Want," and "Full Fathom Five," she writes about sows and skeletons, fathers and suicides, about the noisy imperatives of life and the chilly hunger for death. This copy belonged to Anne Wilder, the confidant and lover of poet Anne Sexton, with Wilder's signature to the front flyleaf. The two engaged in a passionate affair and a prolific correspondence (Wilder is identified as "Anne Clarke" in Anne Sexton: A Self-Portrait in Letters), which reveals much about Sexton's work and her psychological struggles during the mid- to late 1960s. Like Plath, with whom she shared a brief but intense friendship while attending Robert Lowell's graduate writing seminar at Boston University, Sexton was among the finest confessional poets of her generation. The two remained inextricably linked by their work, which explores the darker, feminine aspects of the American experience, and by the nature of their untimely deaths. Octavo. Original green cloth binding. A very fine copy in a fine dust jacket..

        Travels With Charley

New York: The Viking Press, 1962 First edition, first printing. Presentation copy, inscribed by Steinbeck on the half-title: "For / William L. White, Jr. / with best wishes and / Ffft! / from / John and Charley Steinbeck" along with Steinbeck's Miyagus stamp and ink impressions of both Charley's paw print and Steinbeck's right big toe. Publisher's coarse light beige cloth, with an illustration of Charley to the front board in brown, lettered in brown; in the original pictorial cream dust jacket designed by Don Freeman, with an illustration of Steinbeck and Charley to the front panel in brown and black, lettered in brown and black. Book fine, with a minor bump to the top right corner of the front board; unclipped dust jacket, with some minor fading and a few faint spots to the spine, light soiling to the otherwise fresh panels. Overall, a handsome and near fine copy, with and exceptional presentation inscription. While Steinbeck inscriptions are not uncommon in the rare book market, seldom does one find such an elaborate multi-faceted presentation indicative of the author's strong affinity for the recipient. In addition to his inscription, Steinbeck stamps his Miyagus Pigasus flying pig stamp - a symbol Steinbeck used as a symbol for himself, "earthbound but aspiring." Given its personal nature, Steinbeck inscriptions with this stamp are exceedingly scarce, with less than 15 copies offered at auction since 1992. Even scarcer, however, is Charley's paw print, as there are no other copies recorded with such. In addition to including his name in the salutation, Steinbeck had Charley figuratively inscribe this book by using the dog's personal mode of communication; in the text, Charley uses "ftt" to alert Steinbeck that he needed to "salute a bush or a tree" and "ftt ftt ftt" to indicate his hunger, because, as Steinbeck writes on page 23, "He is the only dog I ever knew who could pronounce the consonant F." Charley's paw print is affixed to the half-title next to a print of Steinbeck's big toe (labelled "R.F.P." for right front paw and "R.T." for right toe, respectively). Altogether, this presentation copy would have taken a substantial amount of time to inscribe, unlike the usual hasty signature at a book signing or similar event, and is incomparably unique. [Elaine Steinbeck, Pigasus, 1983]. Travels with Charley is a travelogue in which Steinbeck chronicles his cross-country journey with his poodle Charley. Specifically, the text follows Steinbeck's "one-man, one-dog" journey in which Steinbeck sought to reconnect with "this monster country? its speech, the smell of its grass and trees, its color and quality of life, the pulse of its people." An endearing story, Travels with Charley remains an inspiration for literary travelers. [Edward Weeks, The Atlantic, 1962].. Inscribed by Author. 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

Le doulos (Original French poster for the 1962 film noir)

Paris: Pathé Contemporary Films, 1962. Vintage French grande poster (affiche) for the 1962 French film noir. One of two styles issued, with no priority. Director Melville's seventh film, and narratively perhaps his most complex, a major cinematic entry in the birth of the modern anti-hero. The story unfolds by way of two characters, Maurice and Silien, and consistently switches back and forth between them, leading the audience to grasp randomly for a distinct protagonist (despite the fact that both are criminals). As the story unfolds, themes of loyalty and friendship subtly and devastatingly emerge. 47 x 63 inches (119 x 160 cm). Rolled, on archival linen. Near Fine. Criterion Collection 407. Buss, p. 176. Grant, p. 199. Selby Masterwork, p. 215. Spicer, p. 454.

Vivre sa vie (Candid still photograph of Anna Karina on the set)

Paris: Les Fils de la Pléiade, 1962. Vintage oversize black-and-white borderless single weight still press photograph, shot on location during the filming of the 1962 French film, featuring Anna Karina and two unknown extras in a brothel scene. Based on the novel "Où en est la prostitution" by Marcel Sacotte, who also contributed to the screenplay. Godard's least "intellectual" film is also one of his finest, a touching drama about a college-educated woman who drifts into prostitution out of boredom with the working world. The Criterion Collection: "Vivre sa vie" was a turning point for Godard and remains one of his most dynamic films, combining brilliant visual design with a tragic character study. The lovely Anna Karina, Godard's greatest muse, plays Nana, a young Parisian who aspires to be an actress but instead ends up a prostitute, her downward spiral depicted in a series of discrete tableaux of daydreams and dances. Featuring some of Karina and Godard's most iconic moment, from Karina's movie theater vigil with "The Passion of Joan of Arc" to her seductive pool-hall strut. A landmark of the French New Wave that still surprises at every turn. Set and shot in Paris. In a custom museum-quality frame, archivally mounted, with UV glass. 9.25 x 12 inches. Near Fine. Criterion Collection 512.
