        Expositions and Developments

1962 - STRAVINSKY, Igor. CRAFT, Robert. Expositions and Developments. Garden City, New York: Doubleday, 1962. Octavo, original black cloth, original dust jacket. $2500.First edition, warmly inscribed on the half title to neighbor and longtime friend Miranda Levy, "To my dear Miranda, with love and kisses from I Stravinsky, Nov /63."Few 20th-century composers enjoyed international influence and importance equal to that of Stravinsky. This influence exists in the materials of his music and in his rigorous search for an individual sound". For many years he was, with Schoenberg, one of the two unofficial poles of Western music" (ANB). In these conversations with his protégé, conductor Robert Craft (who coauthored seven books with him), Stravinsky discusses his childhood in St. Petersburg, Russia; recalls such musical luminaries as Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov; reflects on the intersection of music and modern recording technology; and discusses scores including The Firebird, The Rite of Spring and his then-new work, The Flood. Illustrated with eight pages of black-and-white photographs. Inscribed to Miranda Levy, a founding member of the Santa Fe Opera and wife of pioneering television director Ralph Levy (whose credits include directing the original I Love Lucy pilot episode). Miranda "met Stravinsky at the Aspen, Colorado Music Festival in 1950, then hosted him on a New Mexico visit". [When] the composer let it be known he was interested in D.H. Lawrence". [Miranda] introduced Stravinsky to Lawrence's widow". [Miranda and Ralph Levy] moved to Los Angeles and bought a house less than a block from Stravinsky's". Just as she had once kept Santa Feans up to date on the latest news and gossip, she now regaled Igor and Vera Stravinsky with daily updates on movie studio gossip" (Albquerque Journal).Dust jacket with light rubbing to spine ends and edges. A very nearly fine inscribed presentation/association copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

gedanken und farbe. erzählt / geformt. [Manuskript].

Kurt W. Streubel., [Gotha]. 1962 - [Gotha]. Kurt W. Streubel. [1962]. 16 x 15 cm. 45 unpaginierte Blatt. Kurt W. Streubel, geboren 1921 in Starkstadt / Böhmen, gestorben 2002 in Weimar.

        3 eigenh. Briefe mit U. ("Boni"). O. O. u. D. bzw. wohl Zürich, 25. I. 1962.

(o. D.). [...]

Liber Amoris or The New Pygmalion.

London: George Routledge & Son, Ltd., - Small octavo. Original green cloth titles gilt to spine. Spine rolled, ends and corners rubbed, very good condition. E. M. Forster's copy, inscribed to him on the front free endpaper "Morgan Forster, from Christopher Morris, May 1962 with affection and esteem", with the "This book belongs to E. M. Forster". Morris was a History fellow at King's College, Cambridge, from 1930-93. He and his wife Helen, likewise a Cambridge don, but teaching English literature, frequently hosted Forster on his return visits to his alma mater. The Liber Amoris was described by Thomas de Quincey as Hazlitt's "explosion of frenzy. to empty his overburdened spirit" after an ill fated infatuation with his landlord's daughter. The tragic tale of frustrated love would no doubt have appealed to Forster's sensibility. This New Universal Library edition is a verbatim reprint of the 1823 first edition.         The Tin Drum.

London: Secker and Warburg, 1962. First British edition of the author's first novel. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed and dated in 1986 by Gunter Grass on the half title page. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. With a signed letter from Gunter Grass' secretary. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. "When Günter Grass published "The Tin Drum" in 1959 it was as if German literature had been granted a new beginning after decades of linguistic and moral destruction. Within the pages of this, his first novel, Grass recreated the lost world from which his creativity sprang, Danzig, his home town, as he remembered it from the years of his infancy before the catastrophe of war. Here he comes to grips with the enormous task of reviewing contemporary history by recalling the disavowed and the forgotten: the victims, losers and lies that people wanted to forget because they had once believed in them. At the same time the novel breaks the bounds of realism by having as its protagonist and narrator an infernal intelligence in the body of a three-year-old, a monster who overpowers the fellow human beings he approaches with the help of a toy drum. The unforgettable Oskar Matzerath is an intellectual whose critical approach is childishness, a one-man carnival, dadaism in action in everyday German provincial life just when this small world becomes involved in the insanity of the great world surrounding it. It is not too audacious to assume that "The Tin Drum" will become one of the enduring literary works of the 20th century" (The Swedish Academy).

Slightly rubbed, damp stain on the top side of the last page, a few owner's markings (number and year of issue). Otherwise a clean very good or better copy. Extremely rare. This is a remarkable collection of five first Solzhenitsyn's publications including his first ever publication of the famous One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. Writer's publications accompanied by two reviews in the end of the convolute. The short period when Solzhenitsyn was allowed to print his works in Russia came after chief editor of Novy Mir Alexander Tvardovsky (1910-1971) showed a novel by him to Khruchev and suprisingly it met his approval. Everything that was printed in Novy Mir by Solzhenitsyn is bound in this book. By March of 1963 Alexander Solzhenitsyn lost Khrushchev's favor and after Brezhnev came to power he completely lost an ability to publish his works legally. Soviet press started anti-Solzhenitsyn campaign after In the First Circle and Cancer Ward were published in the West in 1968. KGB created a special unit working against the writer. In 1974 authorities ordered to remove all issues of Novy Mir with Solzhenitsyn's publications: ?11 from 1963 (One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich), ?1 from 1963 (Matryona's Place), ?7 from 1963 (For the Good of the Cause), ?1 from 1966 (Zakhar-Kalita). Magazines were destroyed by cutting into little pieces which was confirmed by a special report signed by librarians who were actually destroying them. WorldCat locates Novy Mir. ?7 from 1963 (For the Good of the Cause) in one library (California State Library) and Novy Mir. ?11 from 1962 (One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich) in five Northern American libraries. Other issues were not found. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Tin Drum.

Secker and Warburg, London 1962 - First British edition of the author's first novel. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
