[Photographs]: John F. Kennedy in Western Pennsylvania, 1962

An archive of 48 gelatin silver photographs. 45 of the photographs are 8" x 10" inches, and are slightly curled and very near fine. Two are 7.5" x 9.5" and are mounted on board, and are fine. One is 14" x 11", printed on cardstock, and has a short tear, very good. There are a few duplicates, or more likely near duplicates taken with a fast shutter speed.Photographs by Dudley L. Stouch, a staff photographer for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, each with his stamp on the verso, many also with Stouch's holograph notations. The images are of President John F. Kennedy's visit to Central Pennsylvania to stump for the Democrats during the 1962 midterm elections. All but a few of the images are of Kennedy, a handful are of the press or of the crowd. The photographs detail Kennedy's entire trip, from his arrival at Capital City Airport by helicopter, delivering speeches there and in nearby New Cumberland, his motorcade to Harrisburg, and his speech at a Democratic fundraiser held in the state fairgrounds' Farm Show building. In addition to numerous photographs of Kennedy, the archive contains images of several important figures in Pennsylvania politics, both interacting and observing Kennedy, including US Senator Joseph S. Clark and Governor David Lawrence, whose reelection campaign was a focus of Kennedy's visit. Presumably Stouch took these in his capacity working for the Turnpike, but as near as we can determine, they constitute an unpublished and previously unknown collection of Kennedy photographs taken at the midpoint of his short lived presidency. .

DEAD CERT [ Autographed First Edition ]

Michael Joseph, London 1962 - Autograph; AUTOGRAPHED on titlepage "Hi, XXXX, Dick Francis." The true First Edition (published in London) of Dick Francis' first thriller in what became a landmark series of horse racing mysteries. Burgundy cloth binding in pictorial dust wrapper. Binding has a very slightly lean, corners sharp, light offsetting to free endpapers where exposed beyond dustwrapper flaps (as usual), a very few faint spots of foxing to preliminary leaves, (the half title leaf and the last blank leaf and the rear free-endpaper). Dustwrapper design by Trevor Denning; price-clipped, some very modest edgewear with minor loss at spine ends and lower corners, mild toning to white background and some faint superficial staining to rear panel (see images). Entirely without any restoration or sophistication - a satisfying copy of one of the major high spots of twentieth century modern first editions, inscribed and signed at the center of the title page. Quite scarce, especially autographed.; Signed by Author; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. It has its own physical history that imbues it with a character lacking in ephemeral electronic renderings. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Vitraux pour Jérusalem.

Monte Carlo Andre Sauret 1962 - First edition. Folio ( 36 x 27 cm), limited to 270 numbered copies. With an original double page (46.1 x 30 cm) crayon and watercolor drawing to the verso of the justification page, signed and dated "Marc Chagall 1973" (lower right) and dedicated "pour ami Gustav Zumsteg" (lower left). Comprising title page, text in French by Jean Leymarie, justification, table of contents and the complete set of seven lithographs (including three in colors), on Arches paper, signed in pencil by the artist and the publisher on the justification page, unbound as issued. Contained in a Bristol-lined Arches wove cover. The box covered with grey-green cloth, printed in gold on the front, faint offprint on text pages, an excellent example. Autograph presentation copy from Chagall to his friend Gustav Zumsteg, with an original watercolour. In 1960, Marc Chagall was asked by the Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem to realise twelve designs in stained glass for its new synagogue. To Chagall this work was a "modest gift to the Jewish people". Inspired by his life-long study of the Bible, Chagall realised these designs on the theme of Moses' blessing of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. Following Judaism's injunction against depicting human images, the artworks are composed of animals, flowers, trees and Jewish symbols. Each window design, dominated by a specific colour, contains a quotation from the individual blessings. Many considered these windows as Chagall's crowning achievement, and the artist himself confessed his emotions in regards to this work: "they have completely transformed my vision, they gave me a great shock, made me reflect. I don't know how I shall paint from now on, but I believe something is taking place." In 1961, prior to their installation in the synagogue, the twelve windows were exhibited in the Louvre and the New York's MoMA, where they had the greatest success. "Peter Salz, Curator of the Museum's department of painting and sculpture exhibitions and director of the exhibition, believes that the Chagall windows are among the finest work done in stained glass since medieval times." (MoMA) On February 6, 1962, the newly decorated synagogue was dedicated in presence of the artist. "This is my modest gift to the Jewish people who have always dreamt of biblical love, friendship and of peace among all peoples. This is my gift to that people which lived here thousands of years ago among the other Semitic people." (Marc Chagall, February 6, 1962) This work contains Chagall's sketches and studies for the windows. The lithographs, highly colourful, show an insight into the making of these exceptional art works, along with the Biblical quotations they illustrate. Gustav Zumsteg, who died in 2013 at the age of almost 90, studied and worked as a young man in Paris, where he met and befriended Picasso, Matisse and Chagall. He started as an apprentice at the silk maker Abraham, a supplier of fabrics for fashion houses such as Yves Saint Laurent, and later bought the company. Zumsteg was one of the most important patrons of Zurich's modern-art museum Kunsthaus and assembled an important collection of modern works of art including paintings as well as illustrated books, often dedicated to him, such as the present work.         Dreyer (Inscribed by Carl Theodor Dreyer)

Classiques du Cinema no. 10 / Editions Universitaires, Paris 1962 - Later printing, trade softcover. INSCRIBED by Carl Theodor Dreyer, in a slightly shaky hand, on the title page: "To Pierre Goulliard / Carl Th. Dreyer."Danish director Dreyer began in the cinema as a creator of intertitle cards for silent films, and after moving to France met Jean Cocteau, Jean Hugo, and other members of the French artists' scene. His first film, "The Passion of Joan of Arc" (1928) is almost entirely visual and ironically with very few intertitles, and is considered one of the greatest films of all time. His subsequent films include several works that are in the same category, masterpieces of paranoia, personal torment, and relentless indictment of organized religion. A truly rare signature, the only one we have ever encountered. From the collection of noted cinephile and collector Pierre Goulliard, who spent decades in the latter half of the twentieth century obtaining inscriptions from the giants of European cinema.Near Fine in wrappers. Square and tight, with a faint reader's crease and some light rubbing to the edges. Text in French, profusely photo illustrated throughout.Criterion Collection 62, 125, 126, 127, 128, 437.
